The Marco Rubio Speech on Immigration That Everyone’s Talking About

Rising GOP star Sen. Marco Rubio (FL) gave an impressive speech on immigration Friday to the Hispanic Leadership Network conference, an event led by former Florida Governor Jeb Bush.
The Miami Herald reports that Sen. Rubio’s “sweeping” immigration speech took swipes at both Republicans and Democrats for playing politics with an issue so crucial to hispanics, calling for a compassionate approach for dealing with the issue of illegal immigration.
The presumptive top pick for running mate to any of the remaining Republican presidential candidates conquered an early challenge during his remarks, addressing a group of protesters at the event who stood and interrupted Sen. Rubio’s speech.
“Let me tell you guys something; these young men and women raise a very legitimate issue,” Sen. Rubio said. “They came here to a crowd that they know might not be kind to their point of view on issues. And they had the bravery and the courage to raise their voices. I thank God I’m in a country where I can do that and I want them to hear what I have to say.”
CBS Miami notes that in his speech, Sen. Rubio spoke of the main problem in immigration being how to balance and honor “our legacy of immigrants“ with ”our legacy as a nation of laws.”
“It’s impossible to walk a block in Miami, in Los Angeles, San Antonio without running into someone who is being deeply impacted by a broken legal immigration system,” Sen. Rubio told the conference.
Sen. Rubio had a message to fellow conservatives similar to comments he made earlier in the week when he denounced the language used an ad attacking Mitt Romney produced by the campaign of Newt Gingrich.
“For those of us who come from the conservative movement, we must admit that there are those among us who have used rhetoric that is harsh and intolerable, inexcusable, and we must admit, myself included, that sometimes we’ve been too slow in condemning that language for what it is,” Sen.Rubio sad.
“But at the same time, on the left there are those that are using this issue for pure politics creating unrealistic and unreasonable expectations among those in the Latino community across this country.”
Sen. Rubio did not directly address the DREAM Act, but said that “there is broad support in America for the notion that for those children that were brought here at a very young age, by their parents through no fault of their own, who have grown up here their entire lives, and now want to serve in the military or are high academic achievers and want to go to school and contribute to America’s future, I think there is broad bipartisan support for the notion that we should somehow figure out a way to accommodate them.
“Figure out a way to accommodate them in a way that does not encourage illegal immigration in the future.”
Sen. Rubio’s remarks Friday have received acclaim from several media commentators.
“GOP Golden Boy Marco Rubio revealed the magnitude of his star power today,” writes the Business Insider’s Grace Wyler. “Delivering an impassioned speech on immigration that showed exactly why he is the true heir apparent of the Republican Party.”
“Senator Rubio did little to disappoint the party’s faithful,” FIU Professor Ediberto Roman writes in the Huffington Post. “He was indeed impressive. Whether his impressive approach elevates the conversation and results in change that benefits this country is, however, still an open question. Nevertheless, his poise was remarkable.”
Fox News reports that even as Sen.Rubio called for a softer tone on immigration, he reiterated his emphasis for bi-partisan support for the need for a modernized system, a new Visa program, E-Verify, tougher border security and a functional guest worker program.
“I challenge the Republican nominees and all Republicans to not just be the anti-illegal immigration party,” he said. “That’s not who we are and that’s not who we should be, we should be the pro-legal immigration party.”
Here’s a transcript and video of Sen. Rubio’s speech:

Posted on January 28, 2012 at 11:46pmWe will never fix the immigration problem until we revert back to our founding principles and values. What was the immigration policy of the Founders?
Progressive taxing system on income creates a need for Government to know it’s subjects and ID them.
Socialized policies, SS Medicare/caid, creates the need for Government to know it’s subjects and ID them.
Limiting immigration creates more complication of immigration and creates a need for Government to ID it’s subjects.
In today’s society I can relate to those calling for a wall, deportation, and stricter immigration laws but I am not sure its the right thing to do. Some even call for a national ID and even go as far as bio-metric ID and I’m out on both of those ideas.
If we are honest, in today’s society Government demands your ID directly because of Progressive policies and the solution cannot be to create more Progressive policies bringing Government down even more into Americans lives.
Remember, Progressives first limited immigration and then used (encouraged) illegal immigration to over whelm the system (bankrupting debt) as well as getting YOU (bottom up) to beg the top to come down (ID/Wall).
It’s called herding……

What’s good my friend!
I’m not sure there is a solution to this Progressive problem and believe Progressives caused it on purpose to help breakdown the system.
As a believer in Christ, I feel empathy for those wanting and willing to give their lives to come to the beacon of light on top of the hill and believe we should help them and allow them to come here. If we read the Statue of Liberty’s feet, and obtained that attitude our immigration policy would be different.
As an American in today’s society, I can see the problems illegal immigration causes on a socialist entitlement society as well as limiting immigration.
So honestly I’m not sure what will fix this problem and I think that was the goal. I would like to hear your thoughts.
Hope you are doing well. Thanks for dropping me a line! @Okiemuskogee33 if you ever get on the twitter….

I agree there is a spirit of destruction to it that is demonic (and those that listen to it, progressive or not) and we must be careful not to listen to the demonic solution which will be ID cards and more control to US.
We should shut down the borders, this solves the continued influx of people. It also deals with terrorists and the out of control drug problem, and guns going south.
Then you need to deal with those who are already here in a fair but forceful manner. I would give every illegal 1 year to report to a manager in which they would have to go through a class learn some history and the English language to be able to communicate on a basic level ( children to) this would help deal with some of the problems in our schools due to kids not understanding the language. They would have to prove a history of employment and not being on welfare. They would be required to pay a fee and then be given a temporary citizenship and after 2 years and having a clean record become a citizen. If they do not report and are found out they are immediatly sent back and not allowed to return for 5 years. Anyone here within a year must return and go through the process, which should be made as easy as possible in order to function as an American.
It‘s like you’re own children … you enforce the laws/ you keep you’re word on them, but you also show them great kindness … there is a time where mercy is of no help “ there is a time for everything” Ecc.3:1…peace

Good critique my friend. I agree with most of what you say but I ask, should we limit the amount of immigrants we bring here? Is there only so much room at God’s table or is there room for anyone wanting to sit down?
I’m not confident a wall will secure our border. I’d like to think it would but I also understand the will of people yearning to be free and to come here.
Why would the beacon on the hill and a country believing in God limit immigration and prevent those seeking to come partake in freedom?
As for terrorists, 100% of terrorists were here legally on visas.
Social Security is an National ID isn’t it for socialist entitlements?
So basically, the only reasons Government wants and needs to know who is here is progressive policies of entitlements, selfishness, and prejudices. It is all just a Progressive mess…

I would get out of the boat and float to allow that one in the lifeboat for that is what love is. 1 John 3:16-24
The bad thing about sending out is we must send it to the leaders of the countries those are fleeing which usually ends up squandered.
Basically we limit immigration to “preserve” our entitlements which could be argued as non-Christian (collectivism) and selfishness.
Why does the USA limit immigration? Why would a “Christian” Nation limit the number of people it will accept and share the God given blessing of freedom with? I cannot get a straight good Biblical answer for these….
There are two solutions: end entitlements and progressive taxing system or ID every subject and require citizens to carry papers for the police state. Until we choose one or the other we will be were we are now, a mess. I choose the first for the second violates every value and principle our country was founded upon.

Posted on January 28, 2012 at 9:30pm“If we wanted to secure the border, we could have done it by now.” True!. I think the real problem is that the politicians know that SOMEONE is getting into office. That person needs us to put him there but collects money from some very powerful special interest groups who want the “cheap labor”.
Report Post »From an economic standpoint it seems to make sense for businesses to use illegal labor, it can help keep the profits high enough to avoid moving production to China. It can help construction projects win bids or stay within budget. This helps keep the tax base higher.Cheap labor was what helped make America strong. We had child labor, no safety standards, no workers comp/ disability to make a productive manufacturing environment.
Gee it seems Illegal labor is great for America except for the little bitty fact that they cost the rest of us money and resources. American taxpayers subsidize the cost of this ghost work force through the “free education”, Social services, and “free emergency health care”. American workers are being displaces more and more by a growing ghost work force.
I can speak through experience that everybody is using crews of illegal Mexican labor on construction sites. They do not care about safety standards so they are willing to work under very dangerous situations without complaint. They are cheaper. The tasks are kept as simple as possible so workers can be replaced quickly. Workers know they will be replaced so they work reasonably

I think that the sins of the fathers should be made apparent to their children as an object lesson.
These children should not rewarded by citizenship and all the entitlements it offers based solely on their fathers law-breaking. Let these people go back to their legal country and apply for citizenship in the proper manner. Do we really offer more cookies to a child who has been caught stealing from the cookie jar? I believe you are reacting way too heatedly. As Rubio pointed out, part of the reason for illegal immigration is that the legal immigration system is broken and way too many politicians want to not fix the legal immigration system, because either they want to appeal to your emotions on the right, or create a bigger more hostile underclass on the left. You acting this way plays right into the Progressives’ hands. Rubio is offering an approach that is our only way out for a united stronger people that lives by our American principles. He gave no details how this should be done, but strengthening the border and following our laws wre two items he did include’ Please remember, nothing good ever happens when you act out of anger.

Posted on January 29, 2012 at 1:54am@aconstitutionalistlivesinbrooklyn I understand what you mean here, but they come here because of the incentives provided and lack of legal enforcement. Our legal immigration policies are not bad or lacking. We allow more immigrants into this country, from all over the world, than any other country, or even a few nations combined. And we offer them the best opportunities and services. Like I said, the incentives is what drives the illegal aliens here the most. Healthcare, education, jobs, rent, houses, bank accounts, ETC. ETC. ETC. whether for them or their kids. This is due to the Big Government welfare system and progressive Government that is corrupt and traitorous to the AMERICAN people.
