‘The Onion’ Posts Controversial Image of Plane Flying Into Building

CHICAGO (AP) — The satirical newspaper The Onion is attracting some public ire for an image that shows an airliner about to crash into Chicago’s Willis Tower, the tallest building in the country.

The Onion Posts Controversial Image of Plane Hitting Chicagos Willis Tower

The image, in a video on The Onion’s website showcasing its stories, shows an airplane emblazoned with the company name Sears flying toward the iconic black skyscraper, which for decades was named Sears Tower and headquarters to the retail chain. A narrator intones, “Sears extremists fly a plane into Willis Tower.”

The image generated more than 3,200 responses on The Onion’s Facebook page by Friday evening, many denouncing the use of an image reminiscent of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City.

In response to questions about the criticism and using such an image, The Onion marketing director Grant Jones stuck with the newspaper’s tone. He wrote in an email that, “9-11 must never be the fodder for jokes. Perhaps you didn’t see the news that humor died after 9-11.”

Jones called the blurb “a very important story,” then added: “We’re surprised other major news sources are not giving it the coverage it deserves.”

People in New York weren’t taking the image as lightly.

“That’s not funny,” said Christina Lopez, 36, who was living on New York’s Long Island on Sept. 11, 2001. She said she can’t foresee a time when such a gag would be appropriate, adding: “It’s not OK. Ever.”

Bill Hylen, a Philadelphian who was visiting lower Manhattan on Friday, also didn’t find the image amusing. The 45-year-old said there may be a time when a lighthearted allusion to 9/11 won’t hit such a nerve in the nation, but “it’s not coming up any time soon.”

It isn’t the first time The Onion has generated angst with its satire.

Last September, Washington Capitol Police released a statement refuting tweets and an article claiming members of Congress had taken a group of school children hostage. It included a doctored picture of Republican House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner holding a gun to a child’s head.

The story came a day after the FBI arrested a man accused of planning to bomb the Pentagon and the Capitol with explosive-filled model airplanes.

The Chicago-based publication was founded in 1988 by two students in Madison from the University of Wisconsin. Starting as a local college newspaper, it became a national comedy institution and went online in 1996, and has since developed a television news parody. The publication is distributed weekly in cities, but it has also embraced Twitter and on has an app for the iPad and other tablets.

The Onion’s editorial staff has been based in New York City with other offices in Madison, Wis., but is relocating to Chicago.

The Onion is a pathetic waste of time. They try so hard to be edgey and funny but they are neither.
Hopefully this disturbing image that the Onion is so defiantly standing by, will send a landslide of negative feedback right back at them. No one with any sensitivity would post that picture, you just feel it in your gut, it’s not funny, it’s disturbing and painful and makes me really angry.

It is not way too soon, It has been almost 12 years. It is distasteful, but not too soon. If things like this aren’t done then people will forget and it will happen all over again, and we will be back in this same conversation of “too soon”. It is satire, and a joke; A horribly not funny joke. Just be glad that something like this still causes outrage, When it doesn’t, that is when it becomes an issue

its not controversial, the controversial thing is the goverment crime against the people in the event because they were the accessory before the fact. Onion is better than Faux News and the other tv news outlets, cause its somewhat more real and a bit of humor why not, although its still a mess.

      Walkabout ;

“NIST researchers now support the working hypothesis that WTC 7 was far more compromised by falling debris than the FEMA report indicated. “The most important thing we found was that there was, in fact, physical damage to the south face of building 7,”

If the south face was ‘scooped out,’ why did it not fall to the south? How did it collapse in the center, then fall into its footprint? Remember, there were numerous reports about the validity of the Gulf of Tonkin incident, all of which were really little more than lies. Be skeptical, they’ve been caught in lies in WWI, WWII, Vietnam and Iraq.

“NIST investigators believe a combination of intense fire and severe structural damage contributed to the collapse, though assigning the exact proportion requires more research. But NIST’s analysis suggests the fall of WTC 7 was an example of “progressive collapse,” a process in which the failure of parts of a structure ultimately creates strains that cause the entire building to come down.”

If this were really true the building would have come down randomly, at differing centers of failure. It did not. You’re being mislead.

There is an incredible amount of evidence to support the FACT that 9/11 was a false flag / inside job, without even getting into the obvious controlled demolition of both towers and building 7. I’m not going to debate and argue with anyone…people will just have to study for themselves( while we still can).

Have any of you crazies bothered to even study the architecture of building 7 in your “research”? Building 7 was designed to have a wide open area for a lobby that was 3 stories high. As a result, there were only THREE major support structures holding up the upper floors. The damage to the building could have easily destroyed one at which point the failure of even one of the remaining supports would have lead to the immediate and near simultaneous collapse of the entire building. All this false flag BS is just that. Between our embassies being bombed and the attack on the Cole we had more than enough reason to go after Al Qaeda as it was. Add in the fact that Bin Laden practically bragged about it..

Then, we are to believe that the UNITED STATES FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, or it’s subcontractors, FLAWLESSLY executed said conspiracy, under a rediculously tight timetable…

Then, we are to believe that not one single soul, overcome by guilt, or pride, or stupidity, has spilled his or her guts and revealed details of their role in the deaths of 3300 innocent people, from many different nations in the WORLD TRADE CENTER.

AND, we are to assume that it was a pretext for a war in Iraq, which NO ONE i know of thinks was fought properly.

AND that members of the Democrat party and the press, with the ability to destroy the Republican Party once and for all simply by exposing this crime, failed to even attempt to do so.

AND finally, that having been called out by you and your fellow 9-11 truthers, they have not yet arranged a luxury vacation for you at a labor camp, or an.unpleasant field hockey accident.

Possible? Maybe. But if it went down that way, then we stand no chance whatsoever of defending ourselves, or even of surviving. We are at their mercy. Not even Ron Paul can do anything about it.

I believe the real issue here is that humor is subjective. The average Onion reader would not be offended by this joke, but the average Blaze reader would be. So, knowing this, don’t you think that it is more offensive that The Blaze chooses to offend its own readers by posting this image here?

Furthermore, the butt of this joke is the extremists, not the victims. It’s not the World Trade Center, it’s the Sears Tower… or Willis Tower.

My point is that if you are offended by this image, shouldn‘t you be at least as angry at The Blaze’s decision to post it here as you are at The Onion for posting it on their site, where you never would have had to look at it? You should be moreso, in my opinion. The Onion’s brand of satire has been irreverent for 24 years, and they make no bones about it. They do it for laughs. What is The Blaze’s excuse?

In case you missed it, he was shot in the head and shoulders in Mogadishu after joking about a Jihad group. Yes, they killed him over humor.
As far as I know, British Corporal Craig Harrison strikes at the heart (and perhaps the head) of Jihad the MOST effectively (2 killed and 1 wounded at 8210 feet), but I will take him or any of his fellow brothers instead of a joke any day. What part of they want to kill, convert or enslave you do you not understand? Yes, humor is subject, but as Marshale found out, a bullet in the brain isn’t.

      Trying a third time…

Orion, it sounds like you’re suggesting that we should all refrain from laughing at lunatics out of respect for said lunacy. By that logic, American citizens should have cowered in fear of Hitler during WWII, instead of making fun of him on the homefront.

I agree that a bullet to the brain is the best medicine for Jihadists. That is why we have sent our best and bravest abroad to hunt them down and kill them. I am CERTAINLY all for that. But the rest of us here on the homefront should not resign ourselves to granting those lunatics ONE IOTA of respect. They don’t deserve it, and they will NEVER get it from me, even if they threaten to put a bullet in my brain. Why do you wish to appease evil murderers? Fear of death? That is giving the murderers exactly what they want!

FDR was wrong about a lot of things, but he was DEAD-ON when he said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”

They are called “terrorists” for a reason. Their tools are IED’s, car-bombs, and sniper rifles; but make no mistake, their WEAPON is FEAR. I deny them the use of that weapon in MY homefront, and I wish all Americans would do the same. I will laugh in their faces with my dying breath, if it comes to that.

In all of recorded history, the life:death ratio remains 1:1. Even my Savior, Jesus Christ, acknowledged that debt and paid it. We all owe a death, so why fear it? I only hope when my time comes, it comes as swiftly as a bullet to the brain.

If we really went to war over 9/11, we would have directed our aggression, money, and blood towards Saudi Arabia instead of Iraq. 9/11 was used to further an interventionist foreign policy in an attempt to spread democracy in the middle east in order to stabilize the region. It failed.

The attempt at democratizing Islamic nations was based on a belief that democracies (in general) do not go to war with each other. The problem is that Islam and democracy are not compatible. It was an attempt worth making to moderate Islam.

Invading Saudi Arabia would not have solved the problem we have with Al Qaeda or the renewal of an aggressive Islam against the West.

Islam considers the West Dar al Harb.

I cannot think of a peaceful solution to the problem between aggressive Islam and the West. We are either going to surrender or go to war to stop them. I would rather go to war over there than here.
This problem will not just fade away as time goes by. There have been ebbs and flows in the war between Islam and the West over the past 1400 years. What we have been experiencing is the latest round in this clash between civilizations.

Perhaps if you were in one of the World Trade Center buildings on 9/11 and saw the carnage, the dead etc. you would feel differently about a “joke” of a plane crashing into a skyscraper. May you never have such an experience.

      Si vis pacem, para bellum.

“It was an attempt worth making to moderate Islam”

Perhaps if you were one of the 5,000 dead US soldiers you would think otherwise.
If, by your own admission, Islam is not compatable with democracy, how was the attempt “worth making?”
And for the record, Saudi Arabia had a much bigger connection to the 9/11 attacks than Iraq had. So, by your logic that we went to war because of the 9/11 attacks, wouldn’t it make sense to attack the people who actually attacked us in the first place?
The truth is that the build up, the hype, the propaganda, the lies, and the eventual war in Iraq was nothing more than an experimental foreign policy plan to stablilize the middle east and our troops were pawns in that experiment. And the useful idiots at home cheered it on.
So, yes, that offends me far more than the onion does.

      My plan:
For starters, stop our bi-polar foreign policy of interventionism and entangling alliances.
Stop pushing for free and fair elections in the middle east.
Ask congress for a letter of marque and reprisal against al-Qaeda and then start killing them quickly and violently.
End the wars and bring our troops home.
      Defend OUR borders.
Stop relying on foreign oil and start drilling our own. Drill baby drill.

You didn’t read my posts did you. I haven no solution to a 1400 year old problem. The problem will not go away because you wish it away or do not deal with the problem. This is a clash of civilizations, there is no simplistic solution.

All that can be said right now is that you stay engaged and deal with it on a case by case basis unless you want to surrender or go to total war.

That is what was done in defeating communism, containment and stay engaged. We did not surrender and we avoided nuclear war.

Withdrawing from the world opens the door to more trouble than if you stay engaged. This was one of the lessons learned from WWII.

Last comment to you, I am disgusted that you think this is funny. I am damn proud of the 5,000 men and women who died defending this nation. They died ensuring that such a tragedy will not occur on American soil again. To this day, thank God, their efforts have been successful. I will pass your sense of humor on to the survivors and the family members of those who died on 9/11. I am sure everyone will be rolling on the floor laughing.

#1) I NEVER said anything about withdrawing from the world. Don’t put words in my mouth. Non-interventionism is NOT isolationism.
#2) Withdrawing from the world had NOTHING to do with WWII. Interventionism directly lead to the conditions that gave rise to Hitler. You should study Wilson and learn exactly why he wanted the treaty of Versailles. The treaty of Versailles lead to the chain of events that gave us WWII.
#3) How do we pay for all of these wars? Print more money? Borrow more from China? If you haven’t noticed, we’re broke.
#4) If you love war so much, go enlist and fight it yourself.
#5) i NEVER said that i thought that the “joke” was funny. I said that i thought that using troops as pawns in a foreign policy experiment was more offensive than the onion and i still stand by that thought. Again, don’t put words in my mouth.
#6) Take your “disgust” and go elsewhere.

1.Same as isolationism. Disengaging causes more problems.

2.You really need to know history. Read about U.S. isolationism prior WWII. There was a huge anti-war and isolationist and non-interventionist movement in the U.S. You are showing total ignorance here. Have you never heard of the Neutrality Acts in the 1930’s? It only encouraged evil.

3.Then surrender. I will eat dirt before I surrender.

4.Don’t’ love war, yes I have, also was there for 1st and 2nd WTC attacks.

5.They are not pawns. You are thinking weird.

6.No, I will continue to express my disgust with thinking such as yours.

Glad to see other news organizations are reporting that the majority of people are outraged with Onion over this,

“The image, reminiscent of the planes hitting the World Trade Center on 9/11, has drawn more than 4,000 comments on Facebook–many of them critical.

“This was done in very, very poor taste and should be taken down,” Cher Monroe wrote on The Onion’s Facebook wall. “It will take many years to heal from 9/11 and this is not one of the ways that healing will happen. And for those who say it’s time to forget and just get over it tell that to the families who lost loved ones that day, I dare you.”

“This would have been funny if 9/11 never happened,” Douglas Groetzinger wrote. “But there will never be a day where it’s funny to laugh at the deaths of 3,000 people.”

      1) Non-interventionism is NOT disengagement. Disengagement suggests a total withdrawal from the world stage. Non-interventionism means not getting involved in the tangling alliances that keep us in a state of perpetual conflict. Our current foreign policy is the problem; not non-interventionism. We support, arm, fund, and radicalize militant islamic rebels who, as history has shown us, will eventually attack us and/or our foreign interests at a great expense to the American people in blood and money.

      2) Are you suggesting that Woodrow Wilson and the progressives prior to WWII were isolationists? The neutrality acts had NOTHING to do with the rise of Hitler and Euro-facism.

      3) Surrender? I asked you about paying for all of these wars that you support. You didn’t answer my question, which is rather convenient. Again, should we print more money or just borrow it from China?

      4) Please enlist…….pretty please!

      5) What else do you call people that are being sent off to war, not to defend our freemdoms but, rather, to further a foreign policy experiment? Also, add to the fact that they have rules of engagement that make it almost impossible to win. Medals for restraint in a time of war? Tell me again that they aren’t pawns…..

      6. Thinking like mine? You mean that ending the wars, bringing our troops home, defending our borders, and drilling our own oil disgusts you?

You still haven’t shown me where i said that i thought that the joke was “funny”

I could not agree more, Mr. Tanagra. Though this image is in poor taste, add the accompanying headline and I laughed out loud in real life. I have laughed at The Onion for many, many years. Poor taste is what they do best.

My all-time favorite Onion blurb was arguably just as tasteless as this one: It featured that moving photo of the Chinese student stopping a column of ChiComm tanks in Tiannenmen Square in the 80′s, accompanied by the words “Stirring Symbol Of Human Spirit Difficult To Clean Out Of Tank Treads Page 6A.”

Well, I have yet to see in any of the stories the Onion making jokes about islam and mahammad. SO whats your point? The 3rd story was not joking or making fun of mahammad, so whats the point? The oniion ran three stories? Not one mad jokes or laughed, not even a cartoon with him wearing a bomb. Yet you seem to believe that it makes up for the senseless humor portrayed by the onion? So lets see the onion make fun of mahammad like I said! No, they won’t because their spineless! Yet at the same time they make fun of 9/11 victims? Maybe it wasn’t meant that way, but use your F-ing Brains and think about how much that day effected everyone of US, except the onion staff! So instead they wait a few years and then decide they should use this? If you ask me I say, we take those people “onion” put them in a building to be demolished by explosives, and then let them feel what it felt like to die! Oh and I forgot, make sure the flames and jet fuel made it hot enough for the! Then lets see how their families would react to jokes and cartoons about planes flying into buildings!
@happystretchedthing, maybe instead you should say something to all the other people out there that watched their family members die that day!
