‘The PC Left is Just Hysterically Deranged’: John Derbyshire Speaks Out After Leaving National Review

Say this for John Derbyshire – he thinks what he thinks and doesn’t care who knows it. In fact, he’s willing to give an interview to arguably one of the most likely sites to be hostile on the internet. To that end, Derbyshire has given his first interview after being let go by National Review for writing a racially controversial article to the hipster-focused website Gawker, on the condition that they not censor any of his answers. As it turns out, that’s not a problem for them. Here are some of Derb’s most interesting observations:
- I liked working with NR. (”With,“ not ”for”—I was never a salaried employee, just a freelancer with an “understanding” that they’d use my stuff when suitable. It follows, by the way, that I was not “fired.” I don‘t think you can fire someone who’s not an employee.)
- A lot of the PC left is just hysterically deranged. Why read stuff by deranged people? I’d rather play FreeCell.
- I’m more at ease in a room full of Chinese people than I would be in a room full of black American rap artists. And my personal predilections aside, I think the big division in our society is always black-nonblack. The other stuff—Hispanics, Asians—is a bagatelle by comparison. This makes sense paleoanthropologically, too: Homo sap. first left Africa, then differentiated into other races.
- I may even just give up writing and work as a butler or something. I sometimes feel I’ve said everything I want to say.

Sounds to me like the National Review made a perfectly rational decision. They asked, “Do we want our magazine associated with this guy?“ The answer was ”no.”
It’s becoming a common decision, given the over-the-top rhetoric of the right. More and more, companies are saying the don’t want to be associated with the ideas these guys are expressing. It’s bad for business and bad for their image.
Sooner or later, these guys will all end of on FOX.

Or maybe there are more blacks in prison because they can’t afford good lawyers, and most people actually brought to trial are convicted. Maybe more blacks are ‘prone to crime’ because they can‘t get out of the ghetto’s endless cycle of poverty brought on by cultural problems such as unwed pregnancies/fatherless homes. Put those same illiterate ghetto kids into a private school and watch them change overnight. Education matters; being stuck in second-rate inner city government run schools is destroying the black community. When those kids get to go to a real school with real textbooks and teachers who are better educated themselves, those kids do much better. It’s not genetic, it’s socio-economic and cultural and a lack of opportunity. And as long as there are racists who won’t hire blacks, won’t give them opportunities because they perceive them as less, then they will continue to have fewer options

I have to agree. It‘s really a utopian view that’s very naive. The fact is, most people who are in jail over assault or theft charges deserve to be there. Can we walk back through their life and say they might not have taken up a life of crime if they’d had a better home life? Sure, but I can’t save every child.
Moreover, I think we‘ve conclusively proven that the federal government can’t save every child, either. Human beings are individuals, and you can’t create a federal one-size-all program that will work for everyone. Trying to create a program that works for individuals is fantasy. It always fails. It has to be SO open, it becomes rife with corruption, as does everything else the government does.
I will continue to say the problem is a matter of philosopy. Progressive Socialism is eating away at our country, especially poor blacks and poor whites, like a cancer. It infects the minds of those in its grasp with a kind of non-logic under which basic human nature can be moulded and reshaped to the whim of the applicant. Take a single step back and see just how elitist and nonsensical that position is people.
Try, just try, to avoid the hypocrisy of blaming skin pigment for the problems in the country.

IMO I think if you get away from the absolutist position: government has to fix the problem completely or get completely out of the way, then the idea that government programs can address social problems becomes more appealing. Granted: the government can’t solve any of our problems, but does that mean they can’t assist people in solving their own problems? Obviously, I think the answer is yes.
I think I understand your POV about the fact that government programs always lead to corruption, and I agree that corruption is an endemic part of the federal government (GSA being only the most recent example). The question is whether private enterprise is any less corrupt, and I think the answer is that often it is no better and can in fact be a lot worse the government. The efficacy and corruption of government programs needs to be measured against plausible alternatives, not against an absolute standard.

Thank you! I really appreciate your honesty, as well as your insight into my own thinking. I think we both understand each other very well.
Yes, we will probably not agree with each other. I have accepted that human beings are the same as human beings from 10,000 years ago. Humanity has learned a lot, but human beings are still just as flawed and petty as ever. I present this entire blog and its comment thread as proof.
As to your point about private endeavors – you’re right! You will have corruption, but that’s also part of the “free market”. When you experience corruption in a private company, you refuse to do business with them, and hopefully you also spread the word about their corruption to others. Eventually, they will correct their flaws or the private company will go away. The owner will end up working for someone else, or he’ll starve to death.
I think that’s the fundamental difference between “Conservatives” and “Liberals” – Conservatives accept humanity the way it is, and choose to work with what we have. Liberals have an idealized view of how humanity “could be”, and try to enforce that vision on the rest of us. It’s really the dividing mark of freedom Conservatives are always complaining about.

One last thought – I often feel as though my Liberal friends assume too much about my mindset. They think that I’m “all or nothing”. They think I can’t see the distinction between the “nuanced differences” that they feel they can see.
They’re wrong. I see the same nuances and distinctions. I simply choose to go ahead and categorize things as right or wrong. This allows me to avoid the impression of a vacilating, indecisive fail-meister, and instead project the aura of a strong leader.
Your continued mistake would be to assume that decisiveness = chiseled in stone. It’s just an aura. I’m still open-minded to new thoughts and ideas, but they must work. If they can’t be tested and proven, then they are of no use. If they are tested and proven to fail, then no matter how much you wish they wouldn’t fail, you can’t wish them into successes. It’s really that simple.
Any new ideas that are proven to work are immediately adopted and implemented. Another key difference between Conservatives and Liberals – in my estimation.

Once men in general stopped self-governance and restraint then the clock was ticking on the republic they developed. Hence, we have the breakdown of the family which I humbly believe is the number ONE problem our country has faced for years. Children born with no father’s around. Big government loves it because they are more than happy to fulfill the role of the “father” supplying your needs and telling you what to do. Big government is never the answer because ultimately, unlike in the free private market, government is never scaled back or held accountable. It only grows larger and institutes more and more regulations, laws, and taxes. Of course, our benevolent “father” always does so with the excuse that he is just looking after our best interests. Funny how abusive it feels at times. Big government is responsible for more death, suffering and oppression in the history of man than all wars and plagues combined. Many socialists and communists deny this vehemently, and for good reason. Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot and countless other tyrrants, marxists, communists, socialists have always justified their heinous actions with good intentions, ALWAYS. Today is no different. It is a war against individuals and their liberty all in the name of the collective. It is their Eutopia as unrealistic as it is……..they think they are our god creating us in their image…

I have worked in a pretty much “ghetto” area of north St. Louis, MO. If you think that his list is a bunch of bull, come on down. I have been shot at, windows broke out of the car, car broke into, and the best, when stopping at a local Long John Silvers for a bite to eat with my wife and 2 year old daughter, I was spit on by 2 black teens that were leaning on our table leering at my wife. All with my 2 year old sitting next to her. Hang out for a while, see if maybe you change your mind. I did, I got my CCW and carry a gun at all times.

The only item on the list I disagreed with was the NOT stopping to help a black stranded motorist. Of course if you are in DeTroit or St. Louis that is a different story. The sheriff in DeTroit actually says not to even stop if you are in a wreck let alone for a stranded black motorist there. Unfortunate, and the only people to blame for that is the indigenous people of Detroit. But, in the normal world where I live now I have no problem helping stranded black people.

You argue like my 17 yr old daughter. I label “everyone” a racist? No, I label racists. It’s a pretty easy distinction to make. Folks who comment based solely on skin color are racists.

From the early ‘90’s through the early 2000′s when I finally had had enough and left, there were 3 bond referenda totally 3/4 of a BILLION dollars earmarked to construct or repair all sorts of projects without which “the city was going to crumble”. Oddly enough when the first bond referendum failed to correct the glaring hazards, as did the second and third referenda, an audit was called for by the few Republican members of the city council and county commission. It will come as no surprise that those very reasonable requests to see where hundreds of millions of dollars went were dismissed as racially motivated attempts to smear the black Democrat mayor and his city hall cohorts.
The knee-jerk cries of racism were enthusiastically echoed by the major daily newspaper and given only superficial scrutiny by the local broadcast media. The “now it’s our turn to get some” attitude often ascribed to BHO and cronies was, and still is, in evidence daily in Atlanta and made the behind-the-scenes Good Ol’ Boy shenanigans of the previous city hall crowd seem like small change by comparison.

There was an entire fleet from West Africa that sailed towarrd the new world for commerce decades before Columbus; even Columbus writes in his journals that he saw the remnants of ships on some of the American beaches that resembled African-type sailing vessels. Egypt, Ethiopia, Mali, etc. had thriving civilizations. By your standards, the Babylonians did nothing, nor the Sumerians, nor the Phoenicians. Try looking at history sometime.

It’s good to finally find another voice of reason on The Blaze. I’m a big fan of PJ Media and Bill Whittle, I’ll have to check out those others. I’m also a big fan of mises.org – mostly the articles by Ben O’Neil. It’s amazing to read comments from people on one story saying we need to put the principles of christianity back into our society who then go on to the next story saying black people – fellow Americans – are ignorant animals who should be caged up. It’s truly disturbing.
I, for one, choose to judge people one by one – as individuals – on the content of their character. Unfortunately, there seem to be very few people of great character on this website. America will never be great again until it’s citizens are great.

I receive Mises Daily, and I read almost every article. I purchased “The Principles of Economics” by Carl Menger and I’m most of the way through. It’s part of my effort to self-educate regarding history, politics, and economics.
I’m not a Christian, though I am a believer in God, but I have no problem with Christianity in general. Any philosophy that says “be good to other human beings” is Right On in my mind.
It is nice to see another logical, reasonable human being on The Blaze. There are more, but there’s a ton of very immature folks, too. It’s the internet. I just keep plugging away at trying to wake people up.

He was only freelancing for the National Review, and his articles were a great read, and they ran them every publication. The website is another matter, but still just because you haven‘t read his works and don’t know who he is or about the website doesn’t mean it squat. And speaking to exactly what he wrote…all stats he listed in this article can be proven, and resourced, and his opinions about blacks and mobs, etc., that he wrote about are things we all know to be true because we’ve lived it or experienced those things and know them to be true. He was just brave enough to put it all in writing so others could play sanctimonious twits and judge what he said as something they know they believe but won’t admit to. Being aware of my surroundings and judging people by their appearance and behavior in certain situations does not make one a racist any more than standing in a garage makes one a car. It could, however, save their life or the lives of their loved ones.

Here is a true story. One day, a white lady was driving down the road, when she happened upon a car crashed in a ditch on the side of the road. She pulled over to help, and found an injured black lady in the car. She called 911 for her, since she didn’t have a phone.
When the police showed up, the black lady told them that the white lady had run her off the road. She then pressed charges and sued, both successfully. This is the thanks the good samaritan got.
That is why John Derbyshire says don’t help black people in distress.

Blacks will remain without wealth because they choose to be thugs even when they do well in sports or music. I remember the black kids in Spanish class refusing to believe that Hispanics would be the largest growing segment of the population. This was 1993!! They acted like they were above Hispanics and argued the fact constanly with the teacher. “They always said they were here first because of slavery, so they DESERVED more!” They didn’t work very hard to learn any Spanish, but then they didn’t really speak English well for that matter. At least the Anglo kids tried and had fun with learning some Spanish and some became very proficient because they knew it could be an asset. Common sense.

Much of leftist thought came from the Industial Age. Collectivism (socialism, communism, fascism, progressivism) all were reactions to early Industrial Age economic abuses. Feminism has its roots in the Victorian Age. But the Industrial Age died in 1968, giving way to the Information Age.
The Information Age will have new forms. One aspect is that we are seeing the 1st Century Church alive in the 21st. That is all of the power manifested that we have read in the Bible. This includes less religious legalism that was the hallmark of the Industrial Age. Rather people adapting to the needs of those around them. Even Judaism is shifting from the secularism of the 20th century (Haloni) back to a more religious (observant, frum) worldview (thus the rise of the Dati and Haredi).
Look for a period where people are free in G-D rather than limited by rules. And less secularism.

Just within the universities 70% of the Ph.D candidates are foreign born, primarily from India or China. This means that in a very few years most of the progressives will be gone, replaced by Asians who will not have much use for feminism nor progressivism. That will be a huge shift. It will effect journalism, public education, even Hollywood.
Plus most Baby Boomers are facing death. At some point they will “cram for their finals”. We are already seeing a huge influx of aging Boomers into the Evangelical churches. Once a critical mass has been reached, the numbers will go up exponentially. Plus the evangelicals are making huge gains in Asia, Africa and South America. While Europe is dying, the evangelical church is growing in other regions.
The hardest regions in the US to reach is the corridor from Washington DC to Boston which has a third of the US population and a third of the universities. After that, it is the West Coast. But those areas are being sent missionaries so in time you will see growth there as well.

I found the Implicit Association Test the full interview mentioned to be very interesting and educational. I highly recommend that everyone take it. I had a strong automatic preference like Derbyshire.

Just ask all of those wonderfully safe students at Penn or Drexel universities about their wonderfully safe campus.. Tell them how wonderfully safe their neighborhood is. Tell them how there aren’t any crimes in the area. Then go talk to the police in the precinct that covers the area. They’ll show you the incident reports for the previous 24 hours. In 1990 that was a double sided single spaced sheet. It hasn’t gotten any better since.

Is that a true statement or racist statement. Until the blacks clean up their acts and listen to the blacks of good character, there will be no success or peace in their neighborhoods. Someone needs to educate the blacks that they are being used for evil purposes, and it can’t come from white people. It is a shame that the Wrights, Jacksons, Sharptons etc, see themselves as tribal leaders wanting to overpower, and in some of their cases, (the Panthers, Farrakhan, etc) even kill their white neighbors. They use the umbrella of a false faith to do it. Time to expose, ridicule and shame them. They have benefited from “tolerance” but have not given back anything but heartache to our country.

Just look at the myths that they create about who they are. Same with the myths that they use to describe conservatives. They are myths and these myths are being busted. Without the myths, the left has no control. The myths are their reality.
The ’60s were a period of change, especially as we went from the Industrial Age to the Information Age. Much of the left’s beliefs are out of the Industrial Age. The Evangelicals are going, adapting, meeting people’s needs. Even in Judaism it is the religious (Dati, Haredi) who are growing, not the secular (Haloni). Yes, the protestant church is dying. It is a product of the Industrial Age as well. But the Evangelical Church is growing as they are a new wave of christianity that is closer to the 1st century church. Look the church lost its power over the first 500 years then went into a 1000 years of darkness under the Catholic/Orthodox churches. For the last 500 years it is has been a reversal. We have had three cultural revolutions which included a religious element within each. Thus we had the Renaissance/Reformation, the Industrial Age/Great Awakings and now the Information Age/Spiritual Renaissance.
Just look at the Assemblies of G-D. This group was founded by a black man and is the most racially intergrated denomination in America. It is one of the largest churches worldwide. Why are they growing yet the Mainstream and fundamentalist Protestant churches are dying? Mostly because they adapt to people’s needs and they live a more 1st century belief system.
The shifts are already happening. You are just blind.
