The Pro-Infidelity Super Bowl Commercial That Got Banned by Fox

The Super Bowl is known for its funny, smart, and even racy commercials. But there‘s one steamy spot viewers won’t be seeing next month: a “discreet” dating service’s lingerie-clad add encouraging partners to cheat.

The commercial is for AshleyMadison.com, which calls itself “the world’s premiere discreet dating service.” Translation: it’s a dating service for married people. “Life is short. Have an affair,” the site says. It even offers an “affair guarantee.”

In order to raise its profile, the company produced a 30-second commercial for next month’s Super Bowl. But Fox, which will air this year’s game, banned it. SportsGrid describes the ad:

The ad features adult film star Savanna Sampson, who walks into a corporate boardroom and announces that her executive husband has been cheating on her. Cue a montage of everybody hooking up with everybody (yes, there’s even dude-on-mascot smooching). The ad ends with her in a bra, and the tag line “Isn’t it time for AshleyMadison.com?”

“Standards & Practices has deemed the Ashley Madison spot is not acceptable to air on FOX,” the website said in a press release.

As SportsGrid suggests, the rejection might not be as much about the content but the idea — although depicting people having sex in a car is extreme. Now, the site just has to figure out how to recoup the expenses of producing a failed Super Bowl commercial

It’s good to know that there are still standards when it comes to network TV.

UPDATE:

According to the Huffington Post this is the second year in a row that Ashley Madison has had a Super Bowl ad rejected.

To all those pretending like this company is nothing but a good thing:

Taking the stigma or humiliation or social unacceptability or what-have-you out of the equation is what leads to these sorts of companies proudly showing their faces in the light of day (it doesn’t get any brighter than the Super Bowl, I’d think). It‘s the same thing as people on welfare programs thinking it’s their God-given right to buy beer and pork rinds with their food stamps…and no one should give them a dirty look because, well, it’s socially acceptable now to depend on someone else (read: taxpayers via government) to take care of our basic needs (which some might claim beer and pork rinds are).

(Note: This is not to denigrate those who have a true NEED for certain welfare programs–needs which could be taken care of by the community instead, but that’s another issue. I can only imagine that if I had no other alternative–the magic phrase–I would be embarrassed to lay out the food stamps or hand over a medicaid card. I can‘t say that I wouldn’t do it, but I would certainly do it as little as possible to avoid feeling the humiliation, no matter what circumstances had put me there. And I’d try like Hell to get out of the situation…because of the stigma I would feel. As it is now, we can‘t put any pressure on someone’s self-esteem…they are entitled to whatever makes them feel good. And making them uncomfortable in their poverty–sorry Ben Franklin–is not in any way allowed.)

A sign of decline? Well, I don’t know, I hear ads for strip clubs all the time on the radio when I’m flipping through, and those are little more than lightly disguised brothels that married men go to (most of the time). Burlesque shows used to advertise openly as well, even in the 19th century, as well as open brothels in many places. In fact, as far as I can remember, the only time the West ever tried to pretend to be moral sexually was during the later half of the 19th century, and that caused no end of problems later in the 20th and now 21st centuries due to the severity and methods they used where were, shall we say, less than admirable.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not defending it, but it’s not as if we, or any nation, started out chaste and pure. Sex is a sure sell, and has been for thousands of years, and infidelity, even rampant infidelity, has always been a component of human society. Not to be condoned of course, it‘s a horrible betrayal of another person’s love, trust and commitment. I‘m just saying it’s not “decline” so much as “business as usual” in regards to this topic.

The best insurance against infidelity, in any cultural atmosphere, is a happy marriage that is happy according to *both* people in it. If the belly is full at home then nobody looks for snacks outside the house, as the saying goes. Achieve that and commercials like this become almost comically pathetic.

They don’t encourage anything. Either someone‘s going to have an affair or they aren’t. This site mearly sees a market in building a site where customers can be honest about the affair with each other. It’s a matter of personal character, they’ll have decided to cheat before they ever hear of this business.

This is no different than claiming violent news encourages violence of providing birth control encourages sex.

You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink it – it‘s the cheater that’s at fault, not the temptation. It’s no different than women who blame other women for sleeping with their man – why isn’t the man at fault? Put the blame and shame where it belongs – on the do’er of the deed. “They don’t encourage anything.”

Actually, the commercial actually actively encourages you to have an affair. It says so up front “Life is short. Have an affair.” That’s encouragement. Now encouragement doesn’t make anybody do anything, but let‘s not deny that encouragement doesn’t happen here. It does.

“Either someone‘s going to have an affair or they aren’t. ”

Depends. I think generally you’re correct though. The few weak willed milquatoasts who can’t make up their mind without others telling them to, are probably a small minority in this instance.

“This site mearly sees a market in building a site where customers can be honest about the affair with each other. It’s a matter of personal character, they’ll have decided to cheat before they ever hear of this business.”

True, but technically speaking, an affair involves at least *three* people, not just two.

“This is no different than claiming violent news encourages violence of providing birth control encourages sex.”"

Well, it is different. If newspapers said “Life is short, go out and kill somebody”, then they would be encouraging violence. Last check, I don’t know of any newspapers that do this. This site, however, and the ad, are pretty straight forward in encouragement.

For the record, I do not and have never believed that “encouraging” means that anybody is forced to do something. I can encourage somebody to smoke, tell them about how great it is, all that, but I can’t force them to smoke, that’s their choice. But nevertheless, I would still be encouraging them to do it.

Here we’re in total agreement. I don’t mind violence, it’s part of our culture, and so is sex (which I also do not mind, being the one in charge of the television and not my children). The dichotomy on how we approach the two is rather strange isn’t it?

I warned him before we married not to run around on me; I would not put up with it. I forgave him the first time.

The second time? I called him and told him that it was our 21st wedding anniversary. He hasked me what I wanted. I told him a divorce. I wrote the divorce papers, served them on him, and filed them. And, they worked! He said he never thought I’d divorce him. I told him he thought wrong.

The Blaze is a news site and not being aired on public airways. I do not want a cheating site for married people being shown during the super bowl but still think it is news worthy to see the standards that Fox has shown in rejecting this commercial and giving us an opportunity to see the content. There is nobody forcing anyone to look at it and I do not think there are many children who are site regulars.

God never said for Christians to bury their heads in the sand and be like the ostrich. I believe he said to be as wise as a serpents and as harmless as doves and to be in the world but not of the world and the Blaze by informing us and making us aware, I for one believe is in keeping with that spirit.

I don’t think the argument for applauding pulling the ad is that the ad itself will encourage people to go out and cheat on a spouse. (Some people will find any excuse to do what they want without regard for others.) Instead, showing this ad on national tv is just another way to erode the Christian values that most of us share.

Of course, the company does have a right to create the ad and try to get it on tv just as Fox has the right to not put the ad on. And each person has free will to determine whether or not he or she will cheat on a spouse, commercial or no commercial, company blatantly pushing infidelity or none. The fact that this company exists is a testament to the depths to which we, as a society, have fallen. The only way up is by taking care of our own houses. (And that‘s not to say that we won’t make mistakes or bad choices…and, I’m sure, the road will be a long one.)

It’s not about “trickle down” anything. A vast, overwhelming “authority” (whatever it is at any given time) will not solve problems that are so personal and individualized. It’s about “trickle up”. Morality begins at home. If we want to change things, we start at home with our own children. When we do the best for them in terms of instilling a sense of moral fortitude and a strong character, we’re able to share our success with our communities and more.

Thank you Fox for using sound judgment. This dating service needs to be shamed and embarrassed for even thinking this is acceptable. Society is not a free for all. Your private life may be, but as a society, we have boundaries. Without boundaries it is shear chaos and no security.

Yes, this is a loooooong way from an eight year-old kid giving his Pepsi (or was it Coke?) to Mean Joe Greene!

The Super Bowl is still family entertainment, and impressionable children watch, though this makes the Janet Jackson bare-breast incident seem tame!

Like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, (paraphrased), “an immoral man-made rule that is not in harmony with God’s law should not be obeyed..” Kudos to FOX and Standards & Practices.

I watched the commercial and whats wrong with it, I have no problem watching it, it is not worse than anything else on TV, but I have morals and do not cheat, so this commercial is no different than a beer commercial I watch it but still do not buy into it.

Now I wonder why the same standards be here on the Blaze as on Fox. I am disappointed in the producers and writers of the Blaze. This is not news worthy and just exposure for that company. Blaze where are your morals, what do you believe in , and what are your standards. I am very disapointed that you just don’t get it either.

      @101

“let the audience decide what’s fit…I would bring Savanna home and introduce her to my old lady”

Well, technically, the company is private property. They are allowed to decide all by themselves what to run or not run. That’s their right. Your right knowing that is to choose whether to continue patronizing that company or not. Fox, nor any other news business, is going to air any ol’ thing in the world with nary a care and “let the viewer decide” when it comes to advertisements. They have a cadre of sponsors and if viewers are turned off by one particular ad and stop watching, then the viewers also stop watching the cadre of other sponsors. Business considerations are built on things like that, as they should be.

Thank you Fox and The Blaze and Standards & Practices for watch dogging and standing up for common decency.

I can imagine some football widow that would, (on top of whatever else), have to put up with an advertisement that incourages her husband to cheat on her……..Great!

The Bible says not to give place to the devil. If he gets a foothold from something like this ad, it very well could become a stronghold. Darn shame that adultry has become so mainstream and “pop culture”, that we see ads like this.
In rebuking Israel, God once said of them that, ” you don’t even know how to“ blush” anymore”.
I think most of America is in that condition. Some people are little more than butt sniffing dogs.

This organization has placed ads on Fox before – about two years ago I saw this commercial during Glenn’s show and I wrote in to tell them how disappointed I was that they accepted the ad. Kudos to Fox for banning it! This kind of ad – and for that matter, this kind of company – is a disgrace. I know it won’t keep cheating spouses from cheating if the ad is banned, but it’s about time someone – i.e., all of us! – stands up for common decency and morality again. God help us – literally.

@LIBERTYGODDESS What’s the difference between someones private life and someones private relationships? How does someone who wants to have an affair effect you or your rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?

@jgeezy, I think you are. MANY married people are dissatisfied with their spouse but are trying desperately to hold it together. It is very hard for a married person to have an affair, with all the sticky details and lies to consider, but if they now know there is a site dedicated to married people who only wanna “get some”, and they KNOW the other person is married and ALSO only wants to get some, then it will be so much easier for them to cheat.
This post made me think of the song “If You Like Pina Coladas”. Youtube it and watch the lyrics. It’ll make you laugh too that this could happen from this site, as I’m sure it will eventually.

@ AMERICANSOLDIER….um, I meant about marketing strategy, not about “conservative hypocracy”….although I believe the Republicans should get out of the business of legislating morals (i.e. gay rights0 I think that Fox, a private company has the right to ban what they see as an immoral advertisement. And whose “life, liberty and pursuit of happiness” does this site affect? The spouse of the one using this site. And their possible children And their friends. AND their families.
      Just to name a few.

It all has to do with breaking down morals. You must destroy the family unit as to pit one against the otherand turn every one to the gov’t for support. The socalist way. Destroy faith, family and morals and the only one left to turn to is the gov’t. Makes it so much easier to control people. Look at 1930 Germany and the USSR.

It’s being banned now.. but the fact that it’s being introduced, is just another step towards desentization.
Just like in the early 90s when a gay person or 2 would pop up in a movie or on a TV show. It was a slow introduction and then 10 years later it’s fully accepted and no one even realizes how we got from there to here.
      Our culture is deteriorating.
