The Real Deal on the U.S.-Israel Joint Mega-Drill Sending Military Message to Iranians

A planned American-Israeli missile defense exercise is receiving special attention on the heels of a 10-day Iranian naval exercise and Iranian threats of closing the Strait of Hormuz through which a sixth of the world’s oil passes.
Before the weekend, the AP and other news outlets provided more details on the plans for the largest ever joint exercise between the countries that Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta announced last month. In a statement e-mailed to the press, the Israel Defense Forces tried to play down the timing of the announcement, calling such periodic exercises “routine:”
“These exercises, which are part of a long-standing strategic partnership, are planned in advance and part of a routine training cycle designed to improve the interoperability of our defense systems. Like other bi-lateral exercises, Austere Challenge 12 represents another milestone in the strategic relationship between the US and Israel, as well as a step forward in promoting regional stability.”
Trying to temper speculation the drill is in response to Iranian moves, the statement added:
“The exercise scenario involves notional, simulated events as well as some field training – and is not in response to any real-world event.”
Driving home the point, an IDF source tells The Blaze, “The exercise has been planned for at least two years and therefore has no relevance to any world events.”
The AP quoted a senior military official:
He said it would be the biggest missile defense drill ever held. He was speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue. The Israeli official said thousands of American and Israeli soldiers from different units would take part. He said the drill would test multiple Israeli and U.S. air defense systems against incoming missiles and rockets. Israel has deployed the “Arrow” system, jointly developed and funded with the U.S., designed to intercept Iranian missiles in the stratosphere, far from Israel.
In a speech last month, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta previewed the exercise, citing it as an example of what he called the administration’s “unprecedented levels of defense cooperation with Israel to back up our unshakable commitment to Israel’s security.”
On Sunday’s Face the Nation, Panetta stated two red lines for the U.S.:
“…our red line to Iran is do not develop a nuclear weapon. That’s a red line for us…I think they need to know that — that if they take that step — that they’re going to get stopped…We made very clear that the United States will not tolerate the blocking of the Straits of Hormuz. That’s another red line for us and that we will respond to them.”
Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey on the same show said he believes Iran has the capability, “for a period of time,” to block the Strait of Hormuz, “but we would take action and reopen the Straits.”
For some perspective, The Blaze spoke with Efraim Inbar, Director of the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies at Bar Ilan University, who says that even if not intended as a response to Iranian moves:
“Any military exercise has political implications. The military organ is always connected to political even if that’s not the intention on the part of the Americans or Israelis. It’s a clear political signal to the bad guys. After we saw the military exercise by the Iranians last week, everybody with political sensitivity tends to believe this is a counter-flexing of muscle.”
In light of the large number of U.S. troops expected to participate, Inbar also addressed expressions of isolationism in the U.S., now gaining more media attention due to the presidential campaign of GOP candidate Ron Paul:
“This type of exercise expresses the importance of Israel to the U.S. particularly when the U.S. is seen as being weak in the region. It is leaving Iraq, it is on its way out of Afghanistan. Israel is probably the only place a U.S. military airplane will eventually be able to land … in the Middle East.”
“U.S.-Israel strategic cooperation is beneficial to both sides. The U.S. is a super power and we are a small state but in our area – contrary to what isolationists say in the U.S. – we all still need allies, or what used to be called ‘calling stations.’ Israeli ports are open to the U.S. In fact, the only port where the U.S. can probably bring ships safely in the Eastern Mediterranean is to Israel. Looking at the other countries: Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Libya, the Mediterranean is becoming an Islamist lake.”
In an interview to Israel Hayom, an Israeli Air Force officer emphasized not only Israel gains from the relationship: “The Americans are eager to conduct this exercise, we are their ‘laboratory’ in the field [of missile defense].” A laboratory because Israel has extensive firsthand experience absorbing incoming rockets and missiles from Hamas and Hezbollah and regularly activates its Iron Dome system to combat the threat.
The joint American-Israeli exercise, expected to occur in the spring, is just one of a number of weekend developments with a cumulative effect of sending warnings to Tehran. The Telegraph reported from London that the UK will deploy its largest warship, the HMS Daring, to the Persian Gulf to “send a significant message to the Iranians…” It will arrive later this month.
This as Reuters reported Western powers this week readied a contingency plan to tap a record volume from emergency stockpiles to replace nearly all the Gulf oil that would be lost if Iran blocks the Strait of Hormuz.
The Iranians are continuing to convey signals of their own. Iran launched a military maneuver near its border with Afghanistan on Saturday called “Martyrs of Unity,” per the official FARS news agency, days after completing its naval exercises in the Gulf. It’s unclear if this was meant to send a message to U.S. and NATO troops serving there.
After the 10-day drill that ended last week, Iran announced it was planning another massive naval exercise in February dubbed “The Great Prophet.”
Additionally, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is visiting Latin American allies starting Sunday with Venezuela. Later, he travels to Nicaragua, Cuba and Ecuador.
And the head of Iran’s atomic energy program says a new uranium enrichment facility in Fordo near the holy city of Qom will soon become operational, and continues to insist its nuclear program is peaceful, even as the U.S. and its allies adopt new sanctions:
Emphasizing the stakes for Israel which Ahmadinejad has said should be destroyed, last week, the Jerusalem Post quoted IDF estimates that in the event of war, Israel could come under fire from as many as 15,000 missiles from Iran and its allies Hezbollah and Hamas.

Win-hold-Win strat has never gone away and this is what it looks like. Posted on January 8, 2012 at 9:14pmSome of you really need to do your homework. First off, China is the largest beneficiary or Iranian oil, do you really think they are gonna sit on the sidelines on this one. I think not. Secondly, the Iranian airforce is not the Iraqi airforce which was bombed into submission for years. I got news for ya folks, the Iranian Air Force will put a big dent into the American Naval Air Forces. The F-18 is not an air superiority/interceptor fighter like the F-14 was. The F-14 were faster then the F-18, and the F-18 Super Hornets will find it difficult to match up the new Russian Migs that Iran will deploy. If the Pentagon thinks this will be a cake walk like Iraq was they are very mistaken. Remember Iraq’s air force was already decimated after years of fighting with Iran and further decimated over the years of the no fly zone, prior to the invasion of Iraq. This is one fight that should not be fought, things could spiral out of control and drag the world into a 3rd World War.

The electronics and avionics would be destroyed by the EMP blast the Nuke would cause. Then guess what, all of that sophisticated military hardware is toast with no way to get home and sitting ducks for some speedboat with RPG’s and old fashioned Diesel submarines to pick off. Just something to nibble on but I’m sure they have taken that into consideration.

Western trained pilots are the best in the world, and have proved it time after time. Our technology is far superior to anything Iran has. Do you really think that the F14 is better than the F18? There is a reason why we don’t use it anymore, it’s old technology. It was AWESOME in its day, but it has become old. Also, the F14‘s they have aren’t being maintained, they can’t get spare parts. Most don’t fly anymore. The rest of the Russian and Chinese junk they have will get shot down, just like every other Arab air force that has faced us, or the Israelis.

It will not be a good end to initiate a war with Iran, That country knows we can take them down, not easily, not with the allies they have, but it can be done. What will happen in the South China Sea? There is other repurcussions, many that need to be realized before going to war again there.

Posted on January 8, 2012 at 9:54pm. I am not sure what flawed information you are using to base your opinion on. The aircraft that Iran has in its arsenal is old and outdated. The MIG 29 dates back into the late 70′s as well as the aircraft that is American made. The newest in their fleet is manufactured by Iran themselves. They are hardly known for their prowess in technology.
Report Post »As far as an EMP from a nuclear detonation being an issue for US hardware, not to worry. All critical hardware and equipment is “hardened” to prevent the effects of an EMP in the electronics. Besides Irans equipment would also be affected by the EMP. With a detonation being in such close proximity to Iran, they have much more to lose in that scenario. Basically a total shutdown.

Posted on January 8, 2012 at 11:34pmUmm… The Iranians don’t have but maybe ONE flyable F-14 that was left out of the handful that were delivered just before the fall of the Shah in the late 70′s. They haven’t been able to get parts for the things for over 30 years. F-14s are maintenance nightmares. This was one of the reasons they were replaced. I’m sorry but the Iranian Air Force is no match for any fully up to date western Air Force much less a full US Navy carrier complement. They might get a lucky shot off and down a handful of unlucky Hornets but just like the Iraqi Air Force did when the big boys showed up shooting, they’ll scatter and run.

There may be someting to this, but you don’t seem to account for avionics and electronic advantages we have. I’ll take a Lockeed latest generation F16 over any of their Migs….this includes the electronic missile and defense systems, see Raytheon and Boeing.
As far as EMP threats, I can assure you with all certainty the ALL major defense assets, including carriers, warships, planes, helicopters, and tanks employ Faraday defense principles against such a threat. It’s one of the advantages we have in the afforementioned topic I stated above.
Our advancememts in plane design affecting plane mobility and maneuvering have plateaued. Most latest generation planes of any make and model are pretty on par there. It’s our advancements in the systems and sensors on these units that has ahead by 15 years of any nation.
That said, wars are not won on battlefields or in dog fights, the are won in the mind. Just ask the Brits, they were a super power that lost a war against a nation with no navy, no established central command, limited rifle and ammunition stock piles, and only one third support of the enemy populace for the war.

Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. I couldn’t normally comment but the cat is out of the bag so to speak.
These drills are part of the final plan, and the puppet Obama is going along. The pretense is to go after Iran for their nuclear program, and make no mistake they’ll do just that. Besides eliminating Iran’s nuclear facilities, every port and every oil refinery will be destroyed as well, effectively destroying their economy.
We all support that, but it’s only a feint. During the period of world wide support for this international effort, world leader’s will consolidate power, and appoint a new head of the UN. Under the cover of WWIII the international committee will assume control of all nations, not simply over military actions, but the day to actions of Americans and citizens of every country. The instigation is finely tuned to make individuals believe they are following the World Government to eliminate a straw man enemy. But the cold, hard fact is, that iron fisted control of your life will remain forever, and freedom and justice will be replaced by the New World Order.

“We don’t know what Ron Paul went through in Vietnam. All gave some, some gave all! I don’t think any less of him being a doctor rather than an infrantry man, because it makes no sense to let his surgical skills go to waste.”
Ron Paul didn’t step foot in Vietnam. He was an ear, nose and throat doc, with the Air Force title of Flight Surgeon. He checked out Pilots in the early years of Vietnam. He later went to Texas in the Air Guard performing Physical exams on Helicopter Pilots. That‘s what he went through in the’ Nam.

Posted on January 8, 2012 at 8:34pmWe have handcuffed Israel with our foriegn policies for DECADES. Let’s take the leash off Israel and let her run by herself and see what happens. I can tell you if we do…Iran won’t have nukes. Probably Iran won’t have a country left. Might not be a stone left as it will all be glass… Israel can stand alone all by herself. Guarantee it. But hell no you neocon awipes want to grab them and hold them down! What utter fools you are!

I don’t know how anyone would know without first-hand knowlege or access to his records and then I‘m sure there would be some privacy act issues where they wouldn’t be able to release it to the public. Where are you getting your facts from? I’ll look at them.

Posted on January 8, 2012 at 8:57pmJUSTANGRY. Ask Ron Paul to tell his supporters what he did during Vietnam… as none of you seem to know. If he‘s proud of his service record he’ll do that for his peeps. I’ve commited to memory what I saw years ago in a publication for Military Veterans of Vietnam as I am one. Ron Paul likes it when his followers run around talking up his service, but never quite explains what it is that he did in detail.
Now you have the rest of the story as Paul Harvey would say. Like I said, if you don’t like my explanation… have him tell you himself.

Posted on January 8, 2012 at 9:49pmWhatever seems to get a Paul follower through the night I guess. I’m also Ronald Reagan and Abraham Lincoln too if that would make you feel better. I know how much a Paul follower likes those two. Neve let it be said that Paul supporters never saw a conspiracy they didn’t like.
Now back to me and JUSTANGRY. See, Ron Paul and his followers like you don’t circulate in the same circles or swim in the same pond as us old Military types. We still have reunions to get the old gang together (the one’s still alive) and talk about the good old times. You don’t see much of that anymore since the draft ended and the all volunteer Military came to be. Maybe smaller, much tighter units do, but not like we did and do ’till this day. Ron Paul supporters for the most part are young and live in a bubble and if they don’t see it on the computer, well they don’t belive it could possibly be.
Us older folks from the Military and even civilian life tend to commit more to memory, especially things that piss us off like Ron Paul. You store crap in a computer and not your head for the long haul so you can save room for the names of video games you need to buy. You are good at regurgitating nonsense from websites, but probably can’t cross the road without a GPS or somebody holding your hand. You do the research and prove me wrong JUSTANGRY.

Hey, jackass. I voted for McCain in 2008. But, congrats! You convinced me that I should vote on principle instead of voting for the Republican nominee in the end. Jackasses like you have succeeded in electing Obama again, not people like me. I’d much rather the Republicans nominate Paul – he’s the only one IN EITHER PARTY concerned with the NDAA, SOPA, the Federal Reserve and inflation tax, the debt crisis, and ending our warmongering policy that only creates more terrorism.

They just came home from deployment before Christmas They HAVE held reuinions, but typically they’re deployed or training. I keep up with them on Facebook as horrible as it sounds, but one of the pilots sent me this cool link of them training.

The official forces will not last long. And then we will spend the next 6+ years doing just what we have done in Iraq and Afghanistan – create insurgents that slowly kill thousands of American troops, destabilize the region, and end up leaving in our wake a weak nation we have poured trillions into that will soon fall apart.
But you keep your eyes glued to the Ministry of Truth “reporting” and remember: WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH.
