George Will: The Republican Party Has Become Too Dependent on Southern States

George Will:The Republican Party Has Become Too Southern

Has the Republican Party become too southern? In reaction to a particularly cringeworthy Rick Perry soundbite from Thursday’s debate, George Will told the rest of the panel on ABC’s This Week with Christiane Amanpour that the party indeed has become too dependent on southern states in Presidential elections:

Following a criticism of Perry’s attempt to attack Governor Romney, Will said:

“There’s also the problem that the Republican party has been, in recent years, too Southern. In the last five presidential cycles, they’ve got 79 percent of their electoral votes from the South. It’s too much. The Republican strategy for years has been to carry the 11 states of the Confederacy and Oklahoma and Kentucky, carry the eight states of Mountain West– Arizona and New Mexico to the Canadian border, then spend a sum equal to the gross national product of Brazil to carry Ohio, and then you get to be president. That won’t work anymore partly because Barack Obama did extend the battlefield.”

Considering Will’s comments on the Republican Party dependence on southern electoral votes came immediately following the criticism of a Texas governor’s bumbling attempt to criticize a northern Republican, do you think Will’s comments were meant to have broader implications than just an assessment of electoral strategy?

    My daddy always advised me to never ask a man where he’s from. If he’s from the south, he’ll tell you. If he’s not, there’s no need to embarrass him. It’s not his fault. (-;

Muslims move to America because they hate where they live, after they’re here they want to change America to be more like where they came from. Northerners are exactly the same as muslims, when northerners move to the south, they want to change it to be like the north..Why not just stay where you are and fight for change there. Obama’s got a lot of spare change left he can lend you to get started..

What does the prominence of one party in a particiular area have to do with anything? I notice you don’t use the same criteria for the Ultra Liberal whiners in the northern inner cities calling them too Northern or too Liberal or too Democratic. Is your purpose to imply that there is some thing wrong with the Republican party because they’re attracting people from the South?i I didn’t hear innuerndos or read anything about the “Solid South” when they were voting consistently Democratic.

I doubt that… finding more and more of my friends on the “Left Coast” in CA. heading towards the GOP and up here north of NYC, we are a strong GOP area with very few DNC voters…. so if anything, I see the GOP spreading up along both the East and West Coasts, the South and Midwest have always been strong Red States. They are confusing the values of the South (which in fact are American values) with the South itself.
Christiane Amanpour would not know value if her mother called her and explained it. George is part of the elite Northeast who, generally, live by the standards and values found there (kind of reminds me of Lot trying to find a good man in his hometown!).

Yeah, southern “values” are so American that they rebelled against a legally elected president, kept a portion of their population in perpetual poverty though unconstitutional law, and then murdered them when they got out of line. Yeah, those are real American values. As a Texan, I‘ll assume you’ve never even heard of Juneteenth.

joe1234, the Dems of today are the Republicans of the 1800s. The Dems of today are in favor of larger federal government, the same of the Repubs of then. Our roles have been switched over the last century.

“joe1234, the Dems of today are the Republicans of the 1800s. ”

another predictable democrat talking point….you democrats haven’t changed, you still dehumanize groups of people, blacks, the unborn, tea party members..

the southern democrats didn’t want a small government, I don’t know where you get that bit of fantasy at, they needed a big government to enforce slavery…kind of like the democrats are doing to the entire country today…keep em dependent and dumb, thats the motto of the democrat party…and you sure prove they’re succeeding with the dumb part…

I have to admit, he’s right about the two parties switching ideals. I came across a chart in a history book a few years ago, and the ideals were pretty much reversed then compared to now. The reversal came sometimes post War Between the States and WWI or WWII. It never explained the reversal. I asked a few people and nobody seemed to know why.
My guess would be that was when the Progressives started to come to power and must have taken over the two parties. I remember Beck saying one day, I believe about Woodrow Wilson, that it didn’t matter if you voted Progressive Dem or Progressive Rep, you still get a Progressive president.
My thoughts about the Republicans being too Southern was probably a racist laced comment. You know us Rednecks are ALL racists. Even tho most Rednecks I know hate sorry people, regardless of color. There’s some really good black folks and some really trailerpark trash white folks.
If you read your history, the North and South have always had 2 distinct societies. Mainly, the North is big city and industrial and the South is small city and agrarian. Still pretty much the same today. That was one of the major reasons of the War Between the States. The South still clings to conservative values, and yes, it’s still the Bible belt for a reason.
I personally find it ironic that alot of the ideals that started the War are still relevant today and the Tea Party supports them. Guess us Southerners figured out a big, oppressive guvmint is bad 150 y

Actually there was no “Civil War”. A civil war is when 2 opposing factions fight for control of 1 guvmint. The South wanted to leave the Union and form their own guvmint. Therefore, War Between the States or War for Southern Independence is most accurate.
Remember the victor gets to write the history, and most publishers are up north. So read your own history books, not the school sponsored trash. I’d even say read a Southern point of view history book. I’d suggest a book called “The South Was Right”.

The revolution that invented this country started in THE NORTH. The vast majority of the battles were fought in THE NORTH. With the exception of a couple of notable Virginians, the intellectual foundation of this country came from THE NORTH. The USA was invented in BOSTON and PHILLY! The South was only drug into the revolution, kicking and screaming about keeping their precious SLAVERY!
