‘The Right Leader for Our Times’: Ex-Republican Former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist Endorses Obama

Former Florida governor and ex-Republican Charlie Crist endorsed President Barack Obama on Sunday, calling him “the right leader for our times.”
“I applaud and share his vision of a future built by a strong and confident middle class in an economy that gives us the opportunity to reap prosperity through hard work and personal responsibility,” Crist wrote in a Tampa Bay Times op-ed on the eve of the Republican National Convention.
Crist, elected governor as a Republican in 2006, left the GOP in 2010 after polls showed him significantly trailing Marco Rubio in the U.S. Senate primary. He turned independent and ultimately lost to Rubio in November.
Crist used the endorsement as an opportunity to take a shot at his former party, including making a reference to Missouri Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin’s recent comments about rape.
“An element of their party has pitched so far to the extreme right on issues important to women, immigrants, seniors and students that they’ve proven incapable of governing for the people,” Crist wrote. “Look no further than the inclusion of the Akin amendment in the Republican Party platform, which bans abortion, even for rape victims.”
Crist also defended his support for Obama’s stimulus plan, a move some speculated cost him his Senate bid: “I didn’t stand with our president because of what it could mean politically; I did it because uniting to recover from the worst financial crisis of our lifetimes was more important than party affiliation.”
“President Obama has a strong record of doing what is best for America and Florida, and he built it by spending more time worrying about what his decisions would mean for the people than for his political fortunes,” Crist wrote. “That’s what makes him the right leader for our times, and that‘s why I’m proud to stand with him today.”
Florida Republican Party Chairman Lenny Curry quickly blasted Crist’s endorsement, calling it “a repugnant display from a self-centered, career politician.”
“While the people of Florida, and thousands of visitors who’ve traveled here, are facing an emergency, Charlie Crist has demonstrated, yet again, that his political ambition will always come first,” Curry said in a statement.

He announced that the Florida politicians should remain neutral by not endorsing any candidates because rumor was, Jed was going to endorse Romney. So Jed respected his call, but Crist waited until 2 days before the primary and endorsed McCain anyways, along with another Cuban Congressman, then bombed Romney with false charges of …I can’t recall now, but Romney had no chance to respond and it was to late for anybody else to put out their endorsements. I was disgusted with McCain by his tactics, along with the rest of the GOP who aligned against Romney, as they tried to do again this time. All Crist was doing was trying to see which candidate would scratch his back in return, and McCain jumped at it. Romney isn’t that kind of guy, it is just not part of his DNA. I know the envious ones who think he is just some greedy rich guy, willing to do anything to get elected, will disagree, but you just don’t understand Mormons. Yeah, Romney has to play the political game to get elected, unfortunately, this is the only way you can get elected in the American political environment. This is why Ron Paul or others can’t win the nomination on their platforms. You Paulbots can say what you like, but truth be told, even if Paul won the primary, Obama would have a field day with the attack ads. Romney may be a verbal flipflopper to play the game, but he is a proven leader.

When the establishment GOP forced delegates to sign an affidavit stating they would vote for Romney on the first round with the threat of perjury charges, that violated federal law, 42 USC 1971 (b) Intimidation, threats, or coercion. The RNC violated rule 11 when they started backing Romney before he was the only candidate running. After Ron Paul won the plurality of delegates, by following the rules, in seven states, the RNC tried to change the rules to ten states, when that failed, by one vote, they started stripping duly elected delegates of their seats. Now they have changed the rules and have allowed a presumptive nominee,not nominee, to have dictator style power at the natl convention. Are you guys really OK with them doing all this? No matter how much you disagree with Paul on some issues, you have to agree that election fraud is wrong.
