The Sound of Silence: Media Ignores Stephen Lerner’s Revolutionary Plan to Bring Down US Economy

If you google “Stephen Lerner”–the former SEIU employee who made some rather inflammatory remarks at a liberal conference held this past weekend at Pace University, as we have reported–would it surprise you that only a handful of opinion blogs (most of them conservative) are covering the jaw-dropping speech in which he said:

We have an entire economy that is built on debt and banks so the question would be what would happen if we organized homeowners in mass to do a mortgage strike if we get half a million people to agree it would literally cause a new finical crisis for the banks not for us we would be doing quite well we wouldn’t be paying anything…

…So I think we weed out a very simple strategy: how do we bring down the stock market, how do we bring down their bonuses, how do we interfere with their ability to, to be rich.

With the exception of the Washington Post–which we’ll get to in a moment–why isn’t the mainstream media covering the story of an avowed leftist whose life ambition at the moment includes bringing down the US economy?

That is, in part, a rhetorical question. Of course the mainstream media would not cover the story of a union organizer with ties to the Obama White House. But perhaps there is another reason why the media is shying away from this story. Taking a look at the scant non-conservative blog coverage of the story, it seems like the media does not know what to make of Lerner’s revolutionary remarks. They are pretty damning, after all. As Business Insider reports it: “Caught on Tape: Former SEIU Official Reveals Secret Plan to Destroy JP Morgan, Crash the Stockmarket, and Redistribute Wealth in America.”

Two websites, for instance, which always have something to say about all things Beck-related have for once found themselves speechless in their coverage of this Beck-related item. The media watchdog site, Mediaite, simply mentioned the Lerner affair in passing:

Today he [Beck] gave another example of someone he felt belonged on the Evil side; Stephen Lerner, formerly (maybe) of SEIU, who explained in tapes procured by Beck and The Blaze, his plans to destabilize the stock market.

Beck, however, had a plan to combat the Evil and that meant enlisting his audience in increasing the “visibility” of the Good side through a planned flash mob.

And the liberal Media Matters, which has scathingly blasted Beck in the past, simply posted the Lerner audio without comment. In a later post, however, Media Matters analyzed the video by…resorting to an ad hominen attack on Beck:

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Beck blows the import of the clip way out of proportion. But what’s truly remarkable is that Beck responds to that supposedly dangerous rhetoric with full-throated apocalyptic panic…

It‘s as if Beck doesn’t hear the words coming out of his own mouth. Calling for strikes and civil disobedience is tantamount to “economic terrorism,” but threatening that the United States government will collapse, predicting that “millions will die,“ and urging your listeners to prepare to ”grab on to your gun” is indicative of a level-headed, well-reasoned assessment of the situation?

One reason that the media outlets have been sheepish in their coverage could be this: that the source of the audio–The Blaze–is a bit of an unknown quantity. On the one hand, that The Blaze is a Glenn Beck product causes these media outlets to jump to various conclusions; on the other, National Journal reports Lerner-gate thus:

The talk purportedly happened at a closed session at Pace University over the weekend. The plan, which smacks of socialist fantasy, is to bankrupt the nation’s banks by convincing students, homeowners and city and state governments to stop paying their loans in a coordinated debt strike.

Given past episodes of “shocking” recordings proving less shocking upon review, as well as The Blaze’s strong conservative leanings, this should probably be taken with a deep dose of skepticism. That said, earlier this month, The Blaze did publish a fair-minded report on the misleading editing job of James O‘Keefe’s NPR sting, which shifted the public perception of the hit job.

It was perhaps with that in mind that Ezra Klein decided to give the Lerner audio a fair hearing. Klein, one of the Washington Post’s key bloggers, is a wonkish expert on economic matters–and he seems to have a lot of respect for Lerner:

He’s considered one of the smartest organizers, if not the smartest organizer, working in the labor movement right now. A month or two ago, when I began asking around for forward-looking labor thinkers who could give me some ideas for where labor should go after Wisconsin, his was the first name I was given — even though he’s no longer actually employed by his union. There was a good reason for that. At a time when a lot of people in labor have become, if not resigned to their fate as a marginal force in American life, increasingly confused as to how to reverse it, Lerner has a lot of fight left in him.

On the one hand, Lerner was Klein’s go-to guy on the future of labor. On the other, Klein has this to say about Lerner’s vision for the US economy: “I think there’s much to fear in Lerner’s plan, and also a fair amount to like.”

Klein, it seems, is willing to admit that certain parts of Lerner’s goals are whacky–but Klein‘s reaction to them is tempered by the assumption that Lerner’s goals are unlikely to come to fruition. Here’s Klein:

It’s true that the banks got off too easy, and that a lot of mortgages should be renegotiated. It’s also true that economic disruption is, by its very nature, difficult to control. You might think you’re engaged in a targeted action against J.P. Morgan Chase only to end up somewhere very different. But for better or worse, it’s unlikely that the union movement would actually adopt Lerner’s plans, or that they’d even have the power to make good on them if they wanted to adopt them.

Neither Klein, nor the other liberal bloggers covering this story, are ready to equate Lerner’s remarks with “economic terrorism,” which is what we at The Blaze did in our initial report, and what Beck did on his television show yesterday evening. Klein writes:

Beck’s outlet sells its transcript of a talk Lerner gave in public as “REVEALED — THE LEFT’S ECONOMIC TERRORISM PLAYBOOK.” In reality, it’s Steve Lerner’s plan to organize a series of strikes and protests in order to force the banks to forgive a lot of homeowner and student-loan debt.

This is in stark contrast to the coverage of the conservative bloggers like those at RedState.com, American Conservative, and Pajamas Media:

What Lerner lays out is the unions’ plan to destroy the US economy, and then, ahem, fundamentally transform it to a model that’s more in the far left’s liking.

If the fellow who was running around with the “Liberty coins” can be accused of domestic terrorism for that, how can the unions not be rightly accused of domestic terrorism for hatching a plan that actually is a large-scale attack on the US economy?

Rush Limbaugh, on his program today, put the issue into the form of a question: “Is this not a form of terrorism this guy is preaching?”

Though it’s nothing new that the media coverage of Lerner-gate breaks down along partisan lines, it is surprising how reticent the mainstream media–and the left blogosphere has been–on this issue. Even Media Matters does not want to bite into the substance of what Lerner said last weekend–and that’s saying something.

      Right with you. The Donald had the “THE VIEW” squirming in their seats today when he was asking for Barry to show “HIS” Hawaiian birth certificate. If Barry has nothing to hide…why not show a certified Birth Certificate….and while we‘re at it we should be able to find out whether he’s white or black. I’m still trying to figure that one out? :-)

      I cannot understand why the Dems do not pressure Obama into presenting his birth certificate. I really believe that the Dems know what is on that document and it could bring Obama and the Dems down. I do not think that Obama was born in the USA and the Dems are fully aware of it. Otherwise, this entire episode would have ended long ago.

    Now that Eric Holder and company have been put on notice by the chairman of a Congressional Committee, demanding a response from the DOJ as to how they intend to investigate this matter , if the Mainstream Media chooses to ignore the story much longer they’ll expose themselves yet again as the incompetent and biased liberal tools we KNOW they are.

It is the Pravda and Izvestia of America, spouting the liberal/communist line. They, together with the demoncrats, have had their way for years until the coming of rightwing talkshows and internet. They had almost destroyed America until the rebirth. Now they are frantic to finsh the job. The unions are in high gear also. America will not fall to their plans.

    The old media is dead, but some of the decaying remains are still there. This story proves how impotent the mainstream media is. You have documented evidence of someone trying to cause another financial crisis. The president is tied to this group. Yet, the media won‘t cover it because of their loyalty to the president’s skin color.

    I suspect the reason they are not reporting on it is that they are too busy making sure they can’t be tied directly back to Lerner. Once they feel they are in the clear, they‘ll get around to mentioning that this isn’t a story worth reporting on.

    Lerner is a general without an army. Does he really expect defaulting borrowers and a wave of Cairo/Madison-inspired public protests to bring down J. P. Morgan? This looks like the duelling rallies of 2010, except that this time it‘s one labor radical’s fantasies vs. an angry flash mob, no contest.

      I think you would be surprised just how organized they are. They have aroused student unions, like the SDS and many others who have been hurt by our economy and convinced them it is all the banks’ fault. You would be surprised how many people agree with this! There are protests forming around the world at major banks and local government offices.

      There is going to be a big protest in England on March 26th and it may spread to America. There is a rebellion going on. It is coming here. Don’t fool yourself into thinking this will just go away. SEIU is only one of many unions and they are very probably all planning the same thing. This man was just unlucky enough to be caught. Even if this person is prosecuted, the others will carry out the mission as planned.

      These people are organized and they have plenty of people funding them, including many people in our government. The police unions will look the other way, just as they did in WI. There are many hidden criminals in our midst.

      They will mass in the streets and wave signs and chant slogans and hey-hey-ho-ho and probably beat drums and smoke a little weed. Some may try to break windows or turn over trash cans, and a few may be bold enough to tussle with the police. Their tactics will not induce more than a small number of debtors to default on their mortgages and other debts. They will not bring down J. P. Morgan, still less the capitalist system. The fact that there are a great number of radical student and labor groups, even if they are all in it together and well organized, does not give them the numbers or the mass constituency needed for anything approaching revolution.

      I fired off a letter to my (nearest large city) local newspaper asking for some exploration of the topic which IS newsworthy. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel drips lefty, but is after all a newspaper.I expect news coverage. I rarely get any, but I try. I would encourage all to do the same. Establishment of a paper trail is important. I expect nothing and will be pleasantly surprised if I even get a sour reply.

      There are clear limits to freedom of speech. You can’t yell “fire” in a crowded theatre is the canonical example. You can’t threaten the POTUS (the secret service will be happy to make this very clear to you). You’re not fee to slander someone. Various hate speech laws further restrict free speech in a very PC way (because it depends on whether a group is considered “protected” or not). The list goes on.

      So, no… talking about how to bring down the US economy, and encouraging people to join you in that endeavor…. NOT COVERED under your right to free speech.

      @akmiikeus seems not to understand the gravity of the situation. This make Watergate look like a little “mistake”. The whole administration is involved and domestic terrorism can get you a “hotshot”.
      The media needs time to digest its fate. This is not good for “the one”. Holder can only do so much to squelch this before it is removed from his control. Obama will be impeached over this,most of the cabinet will do time and hopefully Obama gets a good one in the arm!

      Those who have mentioned this are dumbing it down making like cmon one guy with some crazy ideas will not bring down the US.

      The media will never cover this the way it should for the same reasons I have said in the past:
      They dont care OR They approve of it and want whatever the end result is.

      There is noway anyone can tell me they do not know about this or any other big news piece being ignored. I will not accept that as an answer. Because stories they do care about with similar initial publicity get picked up quickly. They have plenty of money and staff available to do the research.

      One last conclusion to add is they may be told “dont cover it” or “we arent doing that one”. If that is the case then who is pulling the strings on such a decision? This all goes deeper and I think its safe t assume at this point if its my third suggestion here its coming from possibly the white house! Dont dismiss it as a crazy idea the crazy talk of yesterday is reality today… nothing is impossible at this point!

      Showtime, unfortunately, congress is being made irrelevant. Obama didn’t even pretend to care about congressional approval before launching his attack on Libya. to me, if you’re launching missiles into a county and killing people, that is a war no matter what the administration is calling it.

      It is my opinion there are too many in the mainstream media who actually support when Lerner is doing. Apparently they, and Lerner, too stupid to think of the long-term implications of the plan. Simply put, if they destroy the wealth there will be none for them to redistribute.

While they are raising taxes and/or cutting services to the middle class and working class, the GOP Governors have been given tax cuts to the wealthy, privatizing state operations that were running at a profit and finding creative ways to reward the Koch brothers and other large financial donors with state assets.       I have a serious question for anyone who thinks they may have the answer. I know that there has to be journalist or television news reporters that work for liberal companys that love this country. (or am I wrong?) Why do they not speak out? Is it because they care more about scoring brownie points and keeping their jobs or is it that most people who go to colleges are or become liberals (progressives) with these lefty professors?
      I cannot understand how the MSM can remain so quiet about everything that is going on. I mostly blame them for Obama getting elected because he was never vetted like he should of been. And I am not racist. It isn’t because he is black it is because of who he is. This country is more racist now than it has been in 60 years. I cannot stand listening to him when he speaks…“Let me be clear” he makes me want to scream in a pillow!!!
      How do we stop the entitlement crowd and the illegal crowd from ruining this country if the media will not speak out? It seems they cannot even be shamed into it. How??? and do they love this country? It seems these people want socialism but I am afraid that if they get want they ask for they will want it back the way it was and it doesn’t work that way. I would like to see the so called Islam religion (cult) not recognized as a religion in this country and as a female I cannot understand how especially women stand up and defend Islam with its Sharia Law.       Does anyone here remember an “incident” that happened…I think it was last May…when the stock market went into a free fall? It was about 30 minutes before closing…remember that the media was claiming that someone had input a sale of stock and accidentally typed in too many “zeros”…well…the media let it blow over and made no big deal out of it…that has never been what I thought happened! I think it was “someone” poking it in our face and saying, “See, we have control of the stock market any time we wish to make it crash”…that has always been my stand on it…some kind of “financial terrorism”…AND…I’ll bet this has something to also do with the Pentagon and their planning for the crash ahead!

      Hey Deanna…You know…I’ve asked myself the very same questions that you are asking…

      When you ask about how the media can be so ignorant or perhaps even complicate in all of this…I think the answer lies with the same answer you would give for why some of your own friends and perhaps even family members also refuse to “see” what is going on…

      I personally don’t believe that everyone in the media is “in on it”…I think it is simply “human nature” to want “the status quo”…they want things to “remain the same”…people just want their lives to remain constant with as little conflict as possible…I think most people hate change and do absolutely anything to avoid changing…I mean, I think we have to be put in some pretty tough situations before we come to the realization that we either change our surroundings or we change ourselves…Good example would be Fox’s new addition of Lou Dobbs…He spoke up about how he felt about things…and, well, he lost his job…but NOW he’s found a new home…one that fits into his belief system…know what I mean?

      When faced with horrific choices to be made, unfortunately, I believe that 80% of all people will choose to “change themselves” to fit into the situation…I’d bet that most all of those who regularly contribute here at the Blaze, fall into the 20% that will sacrifice EVERYTHING in order to prevent the “changing of our environment” (in this case, our country)…We are all fighting the “changes” being hoisted upon us by this tyrannical government, obviously because we know what they are doing is against everything our nation was founded upon…

      The Cloward and Piven strategy, in my opinion, works so well because the plan is to create as much chaos as possible and thus keep the American public reeling and confused…Welp, I for one can certainly see why their plan works so well…I mean, when you think about all that has happened to us because of what Obama and his minions have done in just 2 short years, it is breath taking! Then when you add in a few natural disasters and an oil spill or two…add in two or three wars…Ta Da…you have the Revolutionist’s “dream come true”! My Grandma used to remind me….“The Devil takes care of his own”…it’s like he has greased the skids for these people…

      I believe that they may very likely get their wish and destroy our economy…but…what I am absolutely certain about is that we will all draw in closer to one another and we will help each other and we will rebuild within our own communities…I also think that NOW might be a good time to think about your community and decide if it is one in which you will be able to find the support you are going to need in a collapse…I mean, I think NOW is the time to really get in touch with your core values and decide if your neighborhood, community…your State…are right for you and your family…I’m not sure if Arizona will hold for long in a collapse…I’m thinking about other options for myself and my son…Hope this helps some…Sorry to be so windy…tough subject, huh?       Someone posted that not even FOX news was reporting on this…humm…well, Glenn has told us that he doesn’t know what his program will look like in the future…he has told us on more than one occasion that he will see to it that we hear from him even if he has to meet us in town squares all across this country…I believe he means exactly what he is saying…I noticed yesterday that Drudge was reporting that Glenn may be looking to not renew his contract with Fox at the end of this year…he may be planning to take on his own channel…we do know that he is hiring and his program is growing like gang busters…I really don’t care anymore about who reports what…I get all that I need from tea party, patriot and conservative websites…and glennbeck.com and insider extreme…What I know for certain is that whether Glenn stays or goes…I’ll stay or go with him!

      I got my mail on Friday and in it was my NY union mag…and there on the front cover is a photo of a protester with a sign that says something to the effect of: The banks are killing america!
      Looks like Lerner has the union bosses played already.
      I am union and they do NOT represent me. Times are tough, half of my family is out of work for the first time in their lives. I’m thrilled just to HAVE a good job. I can do without the raises for awhile, I’ll even give up a vacation day to help out…but no…my union wants to get blood from a stone.
      The greed they have will cause them to crash and burn…and I’m not so sure I care if they do anymore.
