LONDON (TheBlaze/AP) — Defending Olympic weightlifting champion Matthias Steiner of Germany was hit in the neck by the barbell Tuesday and withdrew from the men’s super heavyweight competition.
Steiner lost his balance trying to lift 196 kilograms – about 432 pounds – in his second lift of the snatch portion of the competition. He fell awkwardly to the platform as the barbell crashed down on him.
Medical personnel rushed up to tend to the German, who got up on his feet and waved to the crowd as he walked into the back room. He didn’t come out for his third attempt.
An announcer said Steiner would be taken to the hospital for X-rays as a precautionary measure, but he is expected to be fine.
“It came to his neck, so for medical reasons he is not able to continue. But he isn’t hurt badly,” Michael Vesper of the German Olympic Committee told NBC. “Of course he was disappointed. He was not happy with the situation.”

Posted on August 9, 2012 at 7:28pmObviously your callousness won’t allow you to recognize American football efforts. That’s too bad…don‘t knock it if you’ve never stood in there while a stampede of opposing linemen were bearing down on you. Those boys run 40 yards in 5-6 seconds and are strong! This is not a sport for the faint-hearted, leastwise the creeps who criticize from afar, because they happen to favor soccer. I have played college football (American)and have coached youth Soccer. I respect both sports, never trivialize athletic effort in any avenue. You wouldn’t know about that, obviously good at bystanding and criticizing. What’s your sprting enterprise…tiddlywinks?

Posted on August 8, 2012 at 9:39amCommon guys! If you frequent this site, you should have grown accustom to all sorts of errors in Jonathon M. Seidl so called journalism. Don’t be so hard on the guy. Its not his fault hes a second rate “journalist” and can’t ever complete a well written article free of grammatical errors, miss spellings, and some times even get the facts right…
