‘The Taliban, Per Se, Is Not Our Enemy’: VP Biden’s Jaw-Dropping Gaffe

VP Bidens Jaw Dropping Gaffe: The Taliban, Per Se, Is Not Our Enemy

Joe Biden has a long history of verbal flubs, but this one may take the cake.

‘The Taliban, per se, is not our enemy,” Biden said.

That’s right. The Vice-President of the United States, initially added to the Obama campaign to add foreign policy gravitas to the ticket, has come out and questioned whether the Taliban are our enemy.

Let’s get right to the context, which the media will inevitably hype in an effort to conflate an amazing gaffe with straight-talkin’, straight-shooting’ foreign policy from the VP.

Biden was answering questions from Les Gelb for a Newsweek interview, the full text of which you can read here. The subject matter of the interview ranged considerably across the foreign policy spectrum from Afghanistan to Iran and China.

But it was on Afghanistan that the Vice President uttered the particularly shocking line about the Taliban. Biden was apparently addressing the reconciliation process in Afghanistan, which could mean a brokered peace with the Taliban. Specifically, he said:

“Look, the Taliban per se is not our enemy. That’s critical. There is not a single statement that the president has ever made in any of our policy assertions that the Taliban is our enemy because it threatens U.S. interests. If, in fact, the Taliban is able to collapse the existing government, which is cooperating with us in keeping the bad guys from being able to do damage to us, then that becomes a problem for us.”

Biden’s timing is interesting, as a controversial sections of the “National Defense Authorization Act” have made their way through Congress that specifically cite the Taliban. Dubbed by critics as the “Indefinite detention bill” over fears it could strip U.S. citizens of their right to due process and a civilian trial, the Taliban comes up in detainee sections. Under NDAA section 1031, for example, the language on detainee status reads:

“A person who was a part of or substantially supported al-Qaeda, the Taliban, or associated forces that are engaged in hostilities against the United States or its coalition partners, including any person who has committed a belligerent act or has directly supported such hostilities in aid of such enemy forces.”

So the vice president claims the Taliban is not really a U.S. enemy. But a bill just passed Congress says any form of support to the Taliban would effectively make anyone a terrorist stripped of their civilian rights and detained indefinitely under military jurisdiction.

It seems pretty clear that’s because the Taliban is a U.S. enemy, apart from any concerns of the NDAA itself.

Add that to the fact that U.S. soldiers are killing — and being killed by — Taliban fighters every day, and have been for 10 years, and you have a truly monumental gaffe even by Biden standards.

It is really hard to believe and totally frightening that the vice president of the U.S. could say something so stupid.
It’s amazing how the press leaves this clown Biden alone. He is such a liability to this country and to himself. Keep this guy sedated and under house arrest for the good of the country and the world.
It will be bad enough if B.O. gets reelected, but do we have to suffer through another four with Biden the buffoon?

@ blackstone22 – He’s right. The Taliban are only defending their country. Technically, they are not our enemy. It’s your Al-CIA-duh. that are the “monsters”. You know, the evil ones that we (the CIA) helped create during the Russian occupation of their country.
During our occupation of Afghanistan, the Taliban have been known to “turn coat” and join our special operations forces when fighting against Al-CIA-duh.
The truth is, the Taliban are not our enemy, unless we make them our enemy.

That’s all nonsense. First off the taliban aren’t defending their country, they are trying to topple the government and send it back into the state of anarchy that allows terrorists to operate with impunity. They are nothing more than the afghan arm of al qaeda. Secondly we did not help create al qaeda. The people we helped arm and train to fight the russians were the mujahideen. Those people were fighting for their country and their freedom. Al qaeda and the taliban were formed after the war was over by terrorists that saw the vacuum left by the toppling of the government as an opportunity to sieze control of the country and use it as their base of operations.

I know you blazers love history and facts. Perhaps someone can point out to me where, officially, the Taliban is regarded as an enemy to the USA?

S.J. Res. 23 authorizes activity against the perpetrators of 9/11. Taliban had nothing to do with 9/11 and nowhere to my knowledge is the Taliban in any way held responsible. We have never declared war on the Taliban as a group or Afghanistan as a nation.

Note, for those confused, the Taliban is a dari/pashto-speaking group from Afghanistan which was the poltical group/party controlling the country. Al Qaeda, the perpetrators of 9/11, is an Arabic-speaking organization without any ties to any official governments or countries anywhere. Blaming the Taliban for 9/11 is like blaming the USA for Timothy McVeigh or the KKK. The Taliban offered us bin Laden post-9/11, instead of accepting we went after them. They were the very first to denounce him. Our mission in Afghanistan turned to failure when it shifted from Al Qaeda to the Taliban and quagmire ensued.

I don‘t agree with Biden on much but he’s actually right on this.

The Taliban really aren’t bad guys, and if we left them take Afghanistan back, we really don’t need to feel bad for them murdering epople educated in the west, the closing of women‘s hospitals in the name of ’decency’; systematic rape and abuse of women and girls- after all they shouldn’t be going to school now shoudl they. The democrats are waiting to see which candidate gets the GOP nomination. If Romney gets it, the dems will run Obama because they know they can win. If Gingrich gets the nomination, Obama will bow out under pressure from the polls and piers and Hillary will run against Newt. I think Newt can win but it would be close. Mr. Vice President, take your foot out of your mouth once again and do some investigating before you open your mouth…. It was the Taliban who backed the terrorist who attacked on 9/11, not to mention gave Osama Bin Laden a safe haven, until the U.S. Military kicked them all out!!!!

Although I certainly don’t support this administration, I specifically recall the Bush administration and its goons were constantly all over the Media telling us that the Taliban was not our enemy.. That we went into Afghanistan to rid it of Al-Qaeda and that no matter how repulsive the customs of the Taliban were we were not at War with the Taliban. Only in the past few years have the words Taliban and Al-Qaeda come to be used interchangeably along with radical Islam.

Am I missing something there? To me it’s truly amazing that the Media has just changed the narrative and hardly anyone questions it.

Does anyone have any direct quotes?

Now maybe you could have Ms. Bachmann explain how that if she really had a genuine Chrisitan love for her brothers and sisters in Iran she‘d be willing to kill or risk killing 10s of thousands of them just to ensure that their gov’t didn’t attain a nulcear weapon although Israel has 100s and their immediate neighbors have dozens. How installing the puppet “The Shaw” to rule over them was so considerate of us… Or have her explain how our actions in Iraq conveyed a genuine brotherly love for our fellow man in Iraq? And how we removed Gadafi because our concern for the Libyan people? lol

Now recall that China does not allow Christians to practice their religion in that country without first registering, they force abortions, have no rights or freedoms, poison the environment, put down insurrections through slaugther.. etc But for some reason you don’t see us bombing China do you?

Smack, You are right on, the truth hurts and when one refuses to learn from it, reality continues to bite. More accurately, it was the Mujahudeen, whom we decided to arm and keep the USSR at bay. We did the same crap in the 80′s when we chose to arm Iraq and Saddam, in order to keep Iran from getting to powerful. They call it the balance of power. I call it foreign entanglements. Once we have energy self sufficiency, we should just let all of the Mid east countries have a neighborhood street brawl. That will keep them busy for awhile. Let Russia play policeman again.
