The Tearjerker Story of a Dog Who Crawled His Way Home After the Ala. Tornadoes

If a tornado picked you up, threw you across the sky, and set you down in an unfamiliar place far away from home, and you broke two legs in the process, could you find your way back? That’s exactly the incredible story of Mason, a terrier mix in Alabama.
“On [Wednesday] April 27th,” WBRC-TV reports, “Mason was hiding in his garage in North Smithfield when the storm picked him up and blew him away. His owners couldn’t find him and had about given up when they came back Monday to sift through the debris, and found Mason waiting for them on the porch.”
But Mason didn’t just find his way home. Because of the severity of his injuries, he couldn’t even walk. He had to crawl home:
WBRC continues:
“He‘s got 2 broken legs and they’re distal radial ulnal fractures, they’ve not been able to be in alignment so neither one of them have healed so he had to crawl on 2 broken legs to get home,” said Dr. Barbara Benhart, staff veterinarian at the Birmingham-Jefferson Co. Animal Control Shelter.
“This is probably the most dramatic we‘ve seen as far as an injury in an animal that’s survived this long,” said Phil Doster, also with the shelter. “It’s kind of tapering off, the amount of animals we’re seeing because of the storm. For an animal just to show up on someone’s porch after this time was pretty remarkable, especially with the condition he’s in.”
Mason‘s owners asked the shelter to take him because they’re not able to care for him while they try and piece their lives back together, and now Mason’s amazing tale gets better with the help of a donation from the Vulcan Park Animal Care Clinic.
“He called and asked if there was anything he could do, last week, and this dog appeared today and so I called him, and never a hesitation, he offered ‘bring it on over and he’ll see what he can do,” said Dr. Benhart.
Now with a little luck and a lot of love, Mason may become a mascot for storm survivors on four and 2 legs.
According to an update posted on the news station’s site, Mason is scheduled for a long surgery today. And while it will be a difficult one, he is expected to survive.

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 12:57pmHaving lived in that part of Alabama, the kind of people that live there are wonderful for the most part.
As for the family not taking the dog, if they are living in a shelter themselves, they probably are not allowed to have him and perhaps have no way of taking care of him or have family who can care for him until he gets better and they get another place of their own to live.
If you are living check to check, then have a catastrophic event occur, how many of you could really take care of your horrifically injured pet? Our family probably couldn’t, so giving it to the shelter to care for is an act of kindness I think. Maybe one day they will be united when things settle down.

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 12:51pmThing about animals that humans fail to want to accept is that they don’t understand pain and are unable to reason, so pain doesn’t really mean anything to them except it challenges their instincts for survival.
I’m really tired of the way people are treating animals nowadays, almost as if they’re human. I think it’s really unfortunate and disappointing because there are much bigger and important issues people could focus that “compassion” into. Remember the good old says when the father of the household was always saying, “No, we’re not getting a dog because there are huge responsibilities that go into owning an animal.”. Now, you’ll never an intelligent parent say that to a child. Ironically, kids are certainly not being raised any better now, either.

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 12:49pmA great story . . . . Clearly Mason felt loved by his owners, or he would have taken up with people at the near where he was injured. Hopefully he can be re-united with those people when they are back on their feet again.

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 12:38pmMason has proved himself to be more loyal than his “owners.” In spite of insurmountable odds, he made it home only to be kicked off the porch.
Thank God Mason’s in good hands now and may he live many happy and healthy years, forgetting the “owners” who betrayed him.

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 12:38pmI feel like I am reading this story wrong. The dog crawls all the way back to his home to be with his family and they give him to a shelter. Is that what I’m reading?
Report Post »ADNIL
Posted on May 20, 2011 at 2:43pmYeah, what’s with that??? That is the reason why I prefer DOGS over most PEOPLE. If that were my dog I’d have kept him with me even if I had to live in a car or a tent while getting it together.
Report Post »LetUsReason
Posted on May 20, 2011 at 3:40pmI had the same reaction. Your dog breaks both front legs after being tossed in the air by a tornado, crawls for two weeks to get back to your doorstep (tail wagging in the process), and you can’t make the sacrifices in return to say, “If you’re willing to do that to be with me, I’ll do whatever it takes to let you stay with me.” Bitter-sweet story, indeed, and although I don‘t claim to know the owner’s situation, I’m a little angered by the end result.

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 6:35pmIt sounded like the shelter would be caring for the dog until the family could get back on its feet. Not every shelter has facilities to allow family pets. I also doubt that the shelter would set up such a complicated and expensive operation if they were going to euthanize the dog shortly after.

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 12:37pmI would crawl on broken legs too, to get home to my dogs. It works both ways when you love someone. Amazing that Mason could find his home since familiar landmarks were probably gone.
A little divine intervention perhaps?
In the next few days I’m going to purchase a baby buggy (the kind you can jog behind) for my 12 y/o Pug, so we can still go for long walks. Henry has arthritis and gets tired quickly if we walk too far.
Maybe someone will donate a buggy for Mason until he gets better.

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 12:45pmIf you read the story you would see that the owners found him when they were finally allowed to return to their home to try to pick up the pieces. The entire area that the dog was in was blocked off by law enforcement. No one was in that area until they lifted the block so no one would be there to see the dog.

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 12:43pmGod has no inlfluence over tornadoes. He put the earth in motion and has everything work the way it should whether we see a reason for it or not. God will not save you if you choose to step off a cliff. God will not save you if you choose to build your house on an earthquake fault line. God will not save you if you do not understand that tornadoes come through the area of your home and you are unprotected. To say God caused natural disasters is just like blaming God for not stopping you from hitting yourself in the head with a hammer.
There are inherent dangers no matter where we live. To blame God basically is a way of absolving any blame and sense of responsibility to the person who chose to put themselves in harm’s way (no matter how small the odds are of a disaster happening).

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 1:27pmAaron, God did not pick up the dog and throw him in a tornado. The tornado did that. God is not a magic genie in a bottle just waiting to give us whatever we want, or sitting up there in the sky making everything run smoothly for us according to our wants and wishes.

Posted on May 20, 2011 at 5:42pmEarth is but a training ground for the afterlife. It’s a learning experience and if there is an afterlife we may find that tragedy is not so tragic after all.. Except for the evil…. There is far more evidence in favor of an afterlife than not! Many take it as a certainty for their experiences. I know I do to he extent that anything less seems the theory of a madman..
