The Texas Lottery Is Racist — According to the NAACP

For what may be the first time that we’ve seen, one liberal organization’s paternalism has clashed with the obsessive desire of many on the Left to see as much money as possible get sent to the government. Their argument for this particular puritanical outing, sadly, is unlikely to surprise anyone with even a basic understanding of what George W. Bush called the “soft bigotry of low expectations.”

The Dallas, Texas, chapter of the NAACP has something of a problem – they don’t particularly like the Texas lottery. Why? Because they think it’s a regressive institution that offers a minuscule chance of financial success in exchange for taking gigantic amounts of money from “vulnerable populations” every year. Presumably, they would rather that Texas make up the revenue it gets through the lottery with higher taxes on the rich. KDAF-TV has the details:

It is always a thrill when a Lotto ticket is printed and you dream of what you are going to buy with the millions of dollars.  But Juanita Wallace, the president of the NAACP Dallas Chapter, said those who do the most dreaming in Texas were also the most vulnerable.

“It’s the poor people, the uneducated people who spend the most money on the Lottery and it’s not going for [them] the way they thought it was going to go,” said Wallace.

That’s why the NAACP Dallas Chapter voted unanimously to call on state officials to drop the Texas Lotto program.

Wallace said there were also concerns with how much of the proceeds were going toward public education.[...]

Texas Lottery officials, in a statement, disagreed.

Unsurprisingly, we don’t find this particular outing into racial victimhood persuasive, and not just because it has a snowball’s chance in the eruption of Mount St. Helen’s of ever being successful at its objective. But it raises a few questions. For one thing, while we can‘t speak to Texas’ public school system specifically (but based on the increasingly grim state of public education generally), might investing money in the lottery be a more reliable route toward upward mobility?

Moreover, on a less flippant note, what is the lottery if not a symbol of the risk inherent in upward mobility? It’s not as though no one ever wins the thing — in fact, it’s often quite a big news story when they do. How exactly is it hurting “vulnerable populations” to let them have a little hope, even if it is thin hope?

Also, does the Dallas NAACP really think these “vulnerable” populations are so incapable of impulse control that they’ll spend themselves into oblivion on the lottery? And how would those “vulnerable populations” feel if the NAACP does? In fact, might the answer to this last question call the non-racist credentials of the Dallas NAACP into doubt?

With so many questions floating around the proposal, perhaps the only vulnerable population the Texas NAACP should be looking out for are their own arguments.

      Pass a law in Texas where African Americans can’t buy Lotto Tickets and send them over to Oklahoma. We aren’t bashfull about taking anyones money. Right now the Chickasaws and Choctows send busses to Texas and haul anyone from Dallas to Durant and Thackerfield to take their money! I”v never bouht a ticket or been in one of the casinos but a friend that does, told me it was better than going to Las Vegas – I guess thats why unemployment out there is 21%.I wonder how the NAACP will spin that fact if confronted by the Indians since they don‘t look at the color of one’s skin but the color of the money?

      SCOTUS just solved this problem: Congress can mandate EVERYONE purchase lottery tickets—the poor little black people’s tickets will be subsidized—-and those refusing to participate will be fined through the IRS (the governments collection agency)

      The Texas Lotto is a “ Stupid Tax”. If you waste money on a 50 million to 1 chance, you are stupid and need to give your money to the Texas educational system so others might not be as stupid as you were!

The word is used so loosely, that I no longer care, or have a desire to defend myself if I am called racist, even though I know I’m not in the traditional sense.       If it’s true that more blacks are buying lottery tickets than whites… no one’s forcing them, they choose. How does this have anything to do with race?

    Crying “racism” is so much easier than taking accountability for your actions…and it usually gets you what you want. The NAACP and other so-called “black leaders” are the modern day slave masters. They’ve made carreers out of convincing the “disadvantaged” that they are entitled to being taken care of because it‘s someone else’s fault they are poor.     I used to work at a place that sold Lottery tickets and well….more white people bought them then black people.

    If NAACP believes this is racist then I think the 50% of people not paying any taxes is racist.

      Statistically, people who come into a large sum of money through inheritance or lottery squander that money within 7 years. It is hard to know what to do and who to trust. I have spent the last 15 years studying the financial markets. There is a ton to know. Can’t expect an inexperienced financier to be able to hold on to a million dollars let alone make it grow.

    The NAACP would much rather their people take others money without putting any of their own in. They want blacks to get free tickets and whites to pay for them. Hell its only fair to blacks to take whats others have worked for while they set around and breed like rats and don’t take care of their own.. 75% of their wemon don’t even know who their baby daddy is.

    The real headline for this story should be, “TEXAS MAKES NAACP LOOK STUPID”. Only because they really are. Everything in life does not have to do with race. And by the way, does not the NAACP lobby the so called “vulnerable population” for financial support? At least the lottery offers a glimmer of financial hope, all the NAACP offers them is unending turmoil!

    By that theory wouldn’t anything that tempts you to spend money unnecessarily also be racist? I’ve always heard that the lottery is a tax on people who are bad at math and ignorance knows no racial boundaries. It’s an equal opportunity employer.

      I think we all can see that things are not looking good for the Obie campaign and he is desperate for cash (kinda like how Lindsey Lohan is desperate for cash). So he resorts to these kind of fundraising tactics. He is DOOMED. And that is a good thing. Then he can go to Texas and change things (assuming they don’t stop him at the border and tar and feather him).

    Ok, I won’t judge Texas on Dallas
    If you promise you won’t judge Michigan on Detroit, Flint, Saginaw & Muskegon.

    Yesterday I stopped by the supermarket to grab some lunch.
    Woman in front of me had couple packs of soda cans, bags of gummies, boxes of popsicles – which all totaled to about $48. She whipped out her bridge (welfare card…aka free money card) to pay. Laughed with the cashier about how she was going to the beach.

    My lunch cost about $8. I whipped out my cash & told the cashier I was going back to work.

    Back on subject. I agree with you – but I don’t think being poor nowadays is what it used to be.

      And only about 25% of Detroit students make it through to graduate (in other words, 75% of Detroit kids eventually drop out of public school entirely).     The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People doesn’t trust colored people enough to allow them to make there own decisions? By calling for an end to the lottery the NAACP is claiming they know best and are willing to force that decision on them to prevent them from being damaged by their stupidity. It is an insult. If you want someone to grow you can’t rob them of their choices. Educate and trust them.

      Gambling should be suspended for four years (Except in Nevada which was built on the gambling trade). Jack Abramoff shown the light and
      nothing changed the states who adopted gambling and state lotteries
      have become bloated and dependent on these incomes and have used it
      to fuel the corruption in the Governments. The money spent on gambling that would have been spent on gambling could be used to buy goods and services or saved refueling the economy instead of the Governments. When was the last time the Government reported to the public on what their take was off gambling they will report what they gave to the schools or other causes but never what their take was.

      I look at it this way,justice Roberts just motivated not only the base of the republican party but independents and so called Reagan democrats to defeat Obama and retain control of the house and gain control of the senate.If all that takes place the SCOTUS ruling is irrelevant.

    How does it hurt them? I dunno, monetarily? Say what you will about personal responsibility, but human nature goes for the sucker bet, and I don’t think the government should be offering sucker bets. I am opposed to all lotteries. I am also opposed to gambling in general. It ruins a lot of lives. I’m sure based on the socioeconomic stratification in this country that a lot of that hurt affects minorities and such, but that’s not my primary justification by any means. Oh well, so it goes.
