The ‘Top 5’ Most Loved and Hated States

Americans tend to have either a positive or an indifferent view of the 50 states (57 in some circles), right?

Maybe not.

Researchers at Public Policy Polling (PPP) decided that they would ask 1,200 people how they felt about each of the 50 states. Surprisingly, five states ranked high on the “unfavorable” list. Unsurprisingly, PPP discovered that (by an overwhelming margin) Americans have an enormously favorable opinion of Hawaii.

The Top 5 Most Loved and Hated StatesYou had me at “sarong.”

So how did PPP get its results?

“PPP surveyed 1,200 American voters,” the report explains. “PPP surveys are conducted through automated telephone interviews.”

Therefore, because the data might be skewed due to sampling errors, take the survey results with a grain of salt. Of course, that‘s not to say that we can’t enjoy the PPP list and fight over who should and shouldn’t be on it.

Here are the “top 5” most popular states according to PPP:

The Top 5 Most Loved and Hated States

1. Hawaii: 54% Favorable, 10% Unfavorable (+44 Margin)
The Top 5 Most Loved and Hated States2. Colorado: 44% Favorable, 9% Unfavorable (+35 Margin)
The Top 5 Most Loved and Hated States3. Tennessee: 48% Favorable, 14% Unfavorable (+34 Margin)
The Top 5 Most Loved and Hated States4. South Dakota: 42% Favorable, 8% Unfavorable (+34 Margin)

The Top 5 Most Loved and Hated States5. Virginia: 45% Favorable, 13% Unfavorable (+32 Margin)

Here are the “top 5” least popular states according to PPP:

The Top 5 Most Loved and Hated States1. California: 27% Favorable, 44% Unfavorable (-17 Margin)
The Top 5 Most Loved and Hated States2. Illinois: 19% Favorable, -29% Unfavorable (-10 Margin)
The Top 5 Most Loved and Hated States3. New Jersey: 25% Favorable, -32% Unfavorable (-7 Margin)
The Top 5 Most Loved and Hated States4. Mississippi: 22% Favorable, 28% Unfavorable (-6 Margin)
The Top 5 Most Loved and Hated States5. Utah: 24% Favorable, 27% Unfavorable (-3 Margin)

“Of course,” writes Kevin Spak of Newser, “most people are indifferent about most states…with an average of two-thirds of respondents saying they were ‘not sure’ for each.”

“But some states were quite polarizing; Democrats like California 91 points more than Republicans do, while Republicans like Texas 82 points more than Democrats,” he adds.

Here are some of the other findings from the PPP report [emphasis added]:

There are also some differences across demographic lines.  Women have a higher opinion of New York by 27 points more than men, Massachusetts by 22 points, Delaware and California by 16, New Hampshire by 15, Vermont and Illinois by 13, and Connecticut by 11, while men see North Dakota more favorably by 17 points, South Carolina by 15, Wyoming 14, Montana 13, and Iowa and South Dakota 10.

Democrats’ favorite states include Hawaii (62-7), Washington (50-10), Massachusetts (49-9), Oregon (46-6), Vermont (46-9), Colorado (45-8), and New York (51-15), and their least favorites are led by Texas (17-51), Alabama (13-45), and Mississippi (13-41).

Republicans love Alaska (65-3) and Texas (66-9), and absolutely hate California (12-68), followed distantly by Illinois (15-44) and Massachusetts (19-47).

Black voters dislike 10 of the 14 Southern states.  The only ones they like are North Carolina (their second favorite overall after Hawaii, at 42-8), Virginia (36-13), Tennessee (36-15), Maryland (32-13), and Florida (34-18).  Their least favorite state overall is Alabama (14-56), then Mississippi (15-51), and Texas (17-44).

Can anyone honestly say they are surprised by these results? That is, is it shocking to learn that Democrats dislike deep Southern states while a majority of Republicans “absolutely hate California”?

I grew up in Iowa and when the LWCPFs started moving in, I moved out, place went to hell fast. Still better than the people living behind the soybean curtain in Illinois with all their corrupt politicians and anti-gun laws.

Its time to arrest our government, the only problem with Arizona is before i left to move north to cowboy country is all of the liberal transplanted “ fruits and nuts” moving from California to Scottsdale. When i left Phoenix in 2010, after living there for 40 years i could see a big change from a red state to a now not so red state.

The liberal rag, The Arizona republic along with that other VERY liberal rag the New Times have made it their mission to go after all Conservative’s in Arizona. Case in point all the negative press about Sheriff Joe and i hear now from my son who still lives in Phoenix that both rags have the governor in their sights due to the fact that she dared to question the boy king and God forbid she pointed he finger at the boy king Obama.

The papers never seemed to be able to print the facts of the disrespect that Obama and Holder has shown the citizens of Arizona with all the illegals flooding across the border, along with the drugs and lets not forget the BATFE sting gone wrong sending guns south to Mexico.

They are more then happy to carry water for the Democrats and print the lies from the former Arizona governor (“big sis” as the Drudge report calls her) who says that the border is more secure now then it has ever been.

I’m afraid that if Arizona keeps getting all the transplanted “fruits and nuts” from California that it won’t be long until Arizona citizens start to see the same left wing programs in Arizona that has ruine

That’s it Glenneth! Keep ‘em divided. Stories like this help us all remember to dwell on our differences as a nation and hate “the evil people who don’t think like us.” It’s not that they simply have a different outlook on life. No no. They’re evil and they live in evil places. Remember gang: the end times are a-comin’! Faster than even Glenneth, our prophet, predicted! And Glenneth is always right because he’s in charge of that determination. Only Glenn knows how to make broad, vague, general statements and then torture them into reality to bolster his image as a great religious prophet! “The ARM OF GOD” is coming in our lifetimes gang! Buy overpriced old gold coins from Goldline – OOPS! They got hammered for their sleazy business practices last week. But NO COMMENT from Glenn Beck on that little fiasco, huh? Personally, like a lot of level-headed Americans, I can’t wait to see Glenn Beck exposed as the divisive, fear mongering fraud that he is.

I’m no fan of CA. It’s the poster child for why the liberal ideology is a failure. In fact, the map of the continental US is like a toilet – the seat is around the edges and everyone in the middle gets crapped on. If any one of you people fail to vote Obama out this fall – it’s YOUR fault when he gets a second term. Show up and vote. And I still maintain that Glenn Beck is a fraud, but that’s another story.

      @ANONYMOUSE.

The messenger didn’t create the message, merely reporting it. I happen to agree. Those states suck, most of them run by Democrats and have been for years. I escaped California after living there for only 7 years. I watched my neighborhood in north Sand Diego county go from being a nice community to streets and fences being covered with Latino gang tags, people putting bars on their windows, schools turned into Spanish speaking hell holes, abandoned cars, police raids, immigrant camps in the nearby hills igniting brush fires, drive by shootings, I could go on and on. And why? Because liberals make coming to California attractive to illegals because of all the benefits they can get, cities that will give them sanctuary, rent control, on and on it goes. I don’t blame the illegals; I’d do the same if it were me. I blame the liberals running the state that have bankrupted it and allowed one of the most beautiful states in the country to turn int a cesspool. .

people ‘hate’ and ‘like’ states for what reason, now? the government that controls the state in question, usually.

I’ve been around the U.S. And I LOVE IT! There “IS” no place I have been that wasn’t naturally beautiful. From Phoenix, El Paso (well, maybe not El Paso), the east coast, the north, the south, the mid west. It’s all great.

What screws it up? local, state and federal government. Every time. And the people, generally speaking aren’t bad, either. Legal or illegal, if they haven‘t been abused by ’government.’

By not obeying its own rules, government has created animosity among men. By man not making government, his own creation, obey the rules established for us within that ENTITY we subvert the purpose, authority, efficacy and rule of law as it was conceived by man, in order to subvert Gods laws. By? creating an ENTITY outside of Gods laws.

It’s time, friends. God “IS” the answer. And ‘we’ had better get the picture quickly.

In Colorado, we have had a huge number of Californians moving here. Particularly in the Denver and Colorado Springs area. Unfortunately, they are bringing their politics with them. This has all been over the last decade or so. I’m seeing my state in decline. What’s most alarming is shift in our military to liberal standpoints. There are 4 military bases in Colorado Springs alone, and just a decade ago you could always count on that county being conservative… These days that appears to be shifting.

Oh please, stop blaming all the state’s woes on Californians. Every piece of crap lib I’ve ever met in this state is either a Colorado native or drifted in from the midwest. Most Californians that move here do so in order to escape the lib madness in CA so they are mostly conservatives, and very informed conservatives at that. CO natives have a lot to learn about how bad things can get, so instead of being so prejudiced against your fellow conservative Americans you should take the time to get to know them and maybe learn something in the process.

California gave us General Patton and Colorado gave us……John Kerry….egads!

The only reason Hawaii came out on top, is because the media never reports on their crimes.
Anyone who has actually lived there for a period of time, knows how bad the crime is.
When was the last time you turned on the news and heard a negative news story coming out of Hawaii?
Hawaii is off limits to the media. They don‘t want to hurt Hawaii’s tourism.

Utah is known for more than the national parks and skiing. It is known for being the “Mormon state” and for being conservative (Clinton came in THIRD in 1992 — after Bush and Perot). So here is how it plays out in the poll:
      (1) conservative evangelicals hate Utah because they hate all of those people with horns on their heads; and
      (2) Left-wingers hate Utah because it is conservative.
Thus, both ends of the political spectrum have a bunch of folks who hate Utah.
Fine by me, there is enough traffic here already.

I am glad Utah is not getting the credit it deserves. Too many people have been discovering it lately. It is probably the most picturesque state around with its national parks and monuments, its majestic mountains and Lake Powell. If everybody keeps that negative opinion we who love it can keep it for ourselves. The people are nice, although some of the drivers could be a little less aggressive…probably a combination of all the California transplants combined with tractor farmers visiting the big city. And they could use a few more freeways…(this is a vain effort to un-sell it for those who might want to consider moving there). So keep up the negative opinion and let us keep it for ourselves.

Utah was a surprise to me too! I’m a lifelong Missourian, but Utah tops my list of places I’d consider relocating to. I actually considered attending Brigham Young for a while (but was put off by the demographics…it’s like 90%+ Mormon attendance, which makes sense for a private religious school, but I didn’t think my agnosticism would fit in :).
I admire Utah because few people know they have more Civil Rights than any other of the 49 states…You can carry a concealed firearm in college classes in Utah, that is a freedom you cannot find anywhere else in the country. And how can you not love a state that honored the inventive genius John Moses Browning by making his birthday a state holiday and being the first state to adopt an official State Gun, the 1911.
      How would my list go?
      Favorable: 1)Missouri (Home) 2) Colorado 3)Georgia 4)Utah 5)Arizona
Unfavorable: 1) California 2)New York 3)Illinois, my hateful neighbor to the East 4)Massachusetts 5)New Jersey…..my unfavorable list is basically every state you can’t ship a High Capacity magazine (or ‘Assault Clip’!) to.

KSMIKE, I always thought Utah drivers had some driving issues then I came to Virginia. You haven’t seen aggressive until you take a trip to DC or Fredericksburg, plus NO ONE moves over if they are going slower. You can have a mile of clear road ahead and a mile of cars behind and the person holding up traffic will just sit in the passing lane. So everyone else has to go around. We also went on a trip to New York and New Jersey, pretty sure they don’t have traffic laws. Yes, it is that bad.

After seeing eastern drivers I have to say Utah drivers aren’t that bad. I do have to say South Carolina drivers are awesome.

Missouri is the exact same way. 115 counties in the state, and 112 are hard-core Conservative strongholds, yet every election is decided by the two counties which contain Kansas City in the West, and St Louis City/County in the West. THAT is why we can have 112 counties vote against a ballot initiative, but the initiative passes because it got enough yes votes in STL & KC…it’s exactly what happened last year with our ludicrous “Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act”…2 counties yea, 112 counties nay, bill passes…sigh.

As you can see from my name, I am not Mormon(LDS). TBS, The only reason I believe Utah is on this list is because the people who voted in the survey have never spent anytime here and are simply applying the anti-Mormon bias stereotype in their vote. The ONLY thing take bothers me about Mormons is their controlling and somewhat cultlike behavior. The archaic state liquor laws hurt business and tourism and are in place simply to appease the Mormons.

Other than that Utah is great. Incredible mountain scenery, hiking and adventure, best skiing in the world on the best snow in the world, Moab(need I say more), many famous National Parks within a days drive, low taxes, great roads, great services, great climate, great people(Mormons included) and pro gun. I proudly now have a CCP and own guns.

New Jersey(my ex-state) on the other hand is a disaster, a dump, and depressing. I lived there for about 40 years and couldn’t wait to get out. Highest taxes in the nation, confiscatory fees and regulation, pollution, crowded, crowded and more crowded, divisive corrupt politics(McGreevy, Florio, Corzine, Torricelli, Lautenberg) need I say more? Highest insurance rates, gridlock traffic daily, bad roads, very expensive teachers, cops and firemen. Anti-gun.
