The Video of an NYPD Officer Shooting an Aggressive Pit Bull on the Street Will Shock You (GRAPHIC)

If you have a pet of your own, this video will be hard to watch. But wait to pass judgment until you hear all the details.
What are those details? Apparently there was a man having a seizure on the ground, shaking and twitching as passers by watched in horror. However, no one could help the man during his medical emergency because the man’s dog — a pit bull — was being quite protective. In fact, in the video you’re about to see, the dog can even be seen lashing out at one lady who gets to close, biting her pants leg.
Gothamist has more:
Johnny Rodriguez, who was visiting the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary nearby, said he and three other people alerted nearby police officers that the owner of the dog was in danger of being hit by traffic. “He was having a seizure, I saw him lying down on the ground and his head was twitching and shaking.” The two officers who responded called for backup (”I guess they didn’t have the training or something”) and the dog began growling as officers approached the man.
After that, the dog then runs at one of the officers nearby. In a split second, the officer pulls his gun and fires a single shot that sends the dog writhing in pain. The dog eventually stops moving as a pool of blood is visible.
Here’s how it unfolded (CONTENT WARNING — GRAPHIC IMAGES AND SOME LANGUAGE):
But that still doesn’t tell the whole story. The Local East Village, an offshoot of the New York Times, says the dog — named “Star” — has a history of violence:
Brandon Verna, a homeless man acquainted with the owner of the dog, identified by police as Lech Stankiewicz, said that the pit bull has a reputation for being overly protective of her master.
“Most of us figured out that when he’s passed out, whether he’s overdosing or not, leave him alone,” Mr. Verna said. “If he’s going to die, call an ambulance and have them deal with it because no one wants to get bitten.”
A police source said that a video of the encounter leaves no question that the officers acted properly.
“It was a very dangerous situation. The shooting was completely justified,” the source said.
[...]
“She was super protective of her owner,” Ms. McSweeney said. “The dog has bitten multiple people that we know just because they were near him while he was sleeping.” [Emphasis added]
Miraculously the dog survived and is apparently in stable condition. But a police spokesperson told The Local East Village the prognosis doesn’t look good.
As for the owner, The Local has identified him as Lech Stankiewicz, a 29-year-old with a history of drug and alcohol problems. In fact, The Local says he was actually arrested after the incident for an open warrant related to an open container violation.
And despite the details surrounding the shooting, that didn’t stop McSweeney from taking it in an odd Occupy Wall Street-like direction.
“She’s bitten a bunch of our friends,” she said of the dog. “But now the first time it bites a yuppie, they shoot it? It shows that they’re not really there to protect and serve. They just protect and serve the rich.”
What do you think?

Posted on August 16, 2012 at 8:26amJust do a youtube search on pitbull attacks; the shooting was justified and the owner should be charged.
Its not the public’s responsiblity to try to avoid and hide from dangerous dogs, its the owners responsibility to make sure they don’t have to.

Posted on August 16, 2012 at 9:17amI guess I would have liked to see the officer employ a less lethal method first – pepper spray, or a swift kick perhaps – but I don’t think he had any obligation to in this situation. The life of a person trumps the life of a dog and the dog attacked.
I did notice that this dog got no where near the same consideration a police dog gets when it attacks, though.

Posted on August 16, 2012 at 9:46amThat was so hard to watch… The dog was simply reacting as a loyal companion, trying to protect it’s master. As unfortunate as this event was, the officer was justified in his response. The dogs reaction was beyond it’s owners ability to control it as he lay on the cement having convolutions. It’s not the breed nor the owners training in this case, rather it was a bond of loyalty. The dogs instincts was to keep perceived predators away.
My question is why, after a full six minutes after the shooting, didn’t anyone attend to the man laying on the sidewalk?

Posted on August 16, 2012 at 9:49amThe officer was certainly justified in his actions. He should be thankful that there was no ricochet of the bullet off the ground potentially hitting an innocent bystander. Watching what the cops have to deal with, only makes me appreciate them even more so. The hysteria of the woman yelling at the cops for the shooting, the constant videos and pictures being taken, and the crowd control that needed to be done all deserve my respect for the restraint shown by New York’s finest.

Posted on August 16, 2012 at 10:18amIn this story it is completely justified, my problem is the totalitarian state and federal agents will use this as a precedent to shoot protection dogs behind a fence when they unlawfully enter a property. It has happened, to a man innocently playing with his dog inside his fenced property because a cop responded to the wrong house, the man was not compensated and there was no action against the officer, who shot from outside the fence. In an instance like that the officer will bear the same fate as my protector he murdered. Having a small organic farm we are targets of warrantless armed unconstitutional raids, the dogs protect our livestock and family, especially since everything is free range. but our property is completely fenced and has signage telling trespassers to stay off and all government officials they may not enter without a warrant.

Posted on August 16, 2012 at 10:24amSome of the comments on this article are completely ignorant; coming from both sides.
Report Post »The dog was not vicious, the dog was protecting its owner. Turn the tables on this. Imagine if this was a canine unit and it was the officer that was down with a seizure. Had this dog been an “official” police dog and reacted in the same manor towards people, protecting its handler, the response would have been completely different.
I admit that I am biased toward the dog. I am a Pit Bull owner myself. They are an extremely loyal and loving breed, regardless of the exaggerated misinformation that circles the Internet and is spoken by ignorant rumor mongers.
Can an mistrained Pit Bull become violent, yes, just as any other breed of dog can. A well trained Pit Bull, just as any other breed of dog, truly is mans best friend.
The officer that shot this dog was a coward in this situation. He was afraid and he let his fear chose his path of action. The dog wasn’t attacking him, it was chasing him off and I believe a non-lethal deterrent would have given a suitable response (Pepper Spray). Had Animal Control been called to the site (really why wouldn’t they have been) this dog could have been restrained and the officers could have attended to the owner without incident.

Posted on August 16, 2012 at 10:32amThat was a great shot. For all the pitbull lovers, I use to be one, and was on board with the whole, “They are what their owners make them” crowd. But the truth is some rednose pitbulls (from a lot of inbreeding) have the potential to go into an uncontrollable rage, and will attack anyone near it, sometimes ripping the face off of their own owners, or worse their children. Then they snap out of it, almost like a person having a seizure and then not knowing what happened. I don’t trust them at all anymore.

Posted on August 16, 2012 at 11:16amAlthough animals can be products of their environment, most were/are bred for certain qualities and characteristics. There’s no argument that the Pit can be fiercely protective and aggressive, and at time unpredictable. That said, I would have shot this dog in a heart beat; however, I don’t think the officer gave much consideration to the safety of the people, given the fact that he fired his weapon in the direction of a crowd of people. Ricochet, even after the bullet passes through other objects, is quite common.

It is a violent breed and just like owning a wild animal, you might be able to tame it for a time, but you never know when it will turn. My husband’s gentle 13 year old mixed mutt was torn to pieces when the neighbors gentle pit bull pets got out of the yard. The park where I used to love to take my kids, we don’t go there anymore because the neighboring house got one of these vile ugly dogs and it violently charges the fence everytime someone walks by. Yes lovable breed, can‘t understand why everyone doesn’t own one. I have to have a license to carry my gun, and I have much better control over my gun than anyone ever has over one of these dogs.

Posted on August 16, 2012 at 11:49amDon’t mistake aggression for loyalty. If the dog was aggressive it would have attacked anyone for any reason. The dog was protecting his owner. The situation could have been handled better and the cops are lucky a bullet didn’t ricochet and hit a bystander. As for the comment about if he can’t support himself, then why does he have a dog? Simple, people care more for animals than their fellow man. Put two people with cups in front of them on the street and give one an animal. I bet you I know who will get more money. (My own scientific theory). Haha.

Posted on August 16, 2012 at 11:52amLook where the cop’s gun was pointed, dingbat! He very easily could have shot a bystander – it‘s just dumbluck that he didn’t. He violated 1 of the 4 basic rules for handling gun in knowing what is in the background. He did this because he was scared. Period.
As usual, the cops created a problem by forcing themselves on a situation before thinking it through. The dog was obviously just trying to defend its owner and wasn’t messing with anyone not trying to get close. He snipped at the lady but then backed away. They should have gotten the help of someone who knows what they’re doing.
Typical cop, they shoot first rather than accepting a little risk.

Would you stand there and let the dog attack you? You would have done the same thing in that situation and you know it. “To serve and protect” is what we pay him for. He had no choice.
Sorry, trolls, I feel sorry for your loss of direction. You can’t set your priorities correctly. You’re misguided by an insane ideology, by misplaced priorities, and intolerance to anything that doesn’t fit into that insane ideology.
How would you trolls have handled that? Do nothing and let the dog attack passersby? I’d have shot the dog and I would have felt bad, but it was the right thing to do.
Dogs aren‘t always friendly even if they’re well treated. I’ve owned 4 dogs, all since they were puppies: 2 large half Golden retrievers that were so friendly, they would greet everyone (excitedly licking their faces) like family, one yappy poodle that would bark crazily at the sound of mere footsteps or wind, and one German Shepard that was so insanely vicious that it had to be chained outdoors at all times and even family could not approach it. None were raised to be vicious, but we know Princess’ mother was also dangerous. We had no explanation as to why Princess turned out vicious other than being just like her mother. I’ve always wondered why it turned out to be bloodthirsty, but the other dogs didn’t.

He is a wonderful loving (80lb lap dog), who would rather lick you than hurt you. The dog was wagging the tail but staying close to it’s owner. The cops could have tased the dog instead of shooting it. Pits are not top on bite list, not even in top ten. Akita’s are top, chows are up there german shepards (police dogs usually) are higher on the list. We looked it up when we adopted Boo.

Wish I could agree with you, but certain breeds have genetic attributes that human training cannot modify.
While horseback, I was attacked by three “bullies” without provocation. The outcome was “messy and bloody.” The owner of the dogs had bred and owned them for quite awhile, and said they were passive pets. But he had two toddlers and an infant and decided to put the dogs down rather than risk them injuring someone later (his family or anyone he might have given them to).
That incident was the first of TWO I had; the dogs in the second incident hunted me down in the forest (emphasis on “hunted me down”). Still, I don’t dislike the breed….I actually admire the reason they were bred in the first place: to protect.
But I’m damn sure wary of them and go waaaay out of my way if I see one.

I agree that the dog becomes what you make it, but so many people own the breed that have no business with it because they are truly inept an raising it properly, and they are dangerous and attack and kill kids all the time….. I love dobermans, they get a bad reputation for the same reason….. As for the police, They were just in defending themselves, BUT it could have been done without firing their weapon…. Richochet of the bullet would be my biggest concern!!!… A good powerful kick right under the chin of the charging dog should suffice, with a pitbull a few more kicks… Used to be a paper boy, a customer that lived in the would that I had to walk to harassed me all the time. so as not to offend my customer I fought the dog off with the paper for a long time, then one day as I was walking up to the house the dog looked at me and I new something was going to come to a conclusion, It charged at me even more ferociously than the dog in the video, but just as I said powerful kick right under the chin turned it a complete flip, it ran off yelping to the other side of the house, never bothered me again, it would just go to the other side of the house and hide after that day, I was 12, and took taekwondo. But a pitbull does not know when to quit…

She never hurt a fly in her 9 years on the planet and she would have put herself between me and the devil himself to protect me from harm. She allowed cats and babies a like to lay on her and would always try to cheer you up when you are down. Pits have all the tools to be very aggresive but that is a behavior that is taught, All of you haters are either cowards or have never had the oppertunity to own such a loving dog. If that would have been a wolf or cougar instead of an officer you would al be calling this dog a hero. Dogs are not smart enought to tell the difference because its owner was hurt and this dog was afraid the cop was going to hurt him. I could have handled this situation one millions times better than this cop. In stead of coming up all aggresive like all cops do he could have used a calm voice to talk this dog down. Posted on August 16, 2012 at 3:18pmDoesn’t matter the type of dog. The gravity of the responsibility of dog ownership is great. If you do not have reasonable control of your animal, and it becomes a perceived threat by someone, prepare to have your heart ripped apart because that person has every right to put your dog down by any means necessary.
I’ve always had a dog, and luckily I’ve never been in that situation. However, I‘ve also made damn sure that when my dog is out in public I don’t allow it to put itself in a position where it could be reasonably perceived as a threat. Now, there have been situations where an animal has been in reasonable control, but has been unreasonable targeted. This is NOT one of those situations.
The situation I can think of that wasn’t reasonable happened when I was a child. Our neighbors raised several poodles. They had just gotten a bitch that they evidently spent a lot of money on, but it would jump our fence line on a weekly basis. Well, our Dalmatian mix breed thought that not too bad of a situation and took a liking to it, and the poodle soon had very inexpensive mutts in the oven. The neighbors were so mad the husband shot our dog. That was not reasonable. His argument was we should have had our dog fixed, even though it was his dog jumping the fence.

Typical liberal neighbors…beat your wife every night for a screaming hour and no neighbor does anything…forget to feed your cat two days in a row and they’ll have the cops on you. Where are the priorities? The officer responded in a proper manner. The only thing I saw wrong in the whole situation is that someone should have finished off the dog and maybe the animal‘s suffering wouldn’t have gotten the crowd all cranked up…and then maybe (just maybe) someone would have had the presence of mind to check on the incapacitated fellow on the sidewalk.

Sorry, but that officer is far from being a coward, he is protecting his life – something you apparently couldn’t care less about(typical really, it’s the kind of reaction I see from pit bull owners, chastize the officer for protecting his life but don’t even care about the dog who was attacking him).
The actions of this officer were justified due to how dangerous Pit Bulls are (sorry, but I rarely read of them doing anything useful, I only ever read of them attacking and killing people, espically children and espically when their owners train them to be attack dogs and sick them on citizens or even officers and no that’s not mistraining, that’s training period)
Also, Police USED to use pepperspray on dogs.. here’s a bit of a newsflash for ya: Pepperspray and Tazers aren’t effective against a mutt that is moving to quickly for them to hit, that‘s why you use a gun because it’s the only possible means from stopping a mutt from possibly causing harm to you and anyone else.
Of course, I am no where NEAR surprised at how the people in NYC acted; more care for the mutt than the human being who is on the ground in trouble. Granted, I do find myself annoyed the cops didn’t go for him.
There are very few dogs I like (a buddy of mine who I visited has a dog, and his dog is about the only one I do like) otherwise, I am heavily biased against dogs from being attacked by one in the past.

Posted on August 16, 2012 at 5:54pmI love the rants of the anti -pit bull types … they are not well informed and only regurgitate what they hear in the press. On the other hand the dog clearly attacked the cop in defense of his master. the dog was stressed the because of his seizure. The cop was in his right to shoot.. The homeless man was a problem and the fact he had a dog prone to aggression for whatever reason made him the culprit in this tragedy. There literally 10 million Pit types/mixes in this country. There are by their stature strong and resilient and can be dangerous if mistreated and abused. They are not as some will try to say unpredictable as a breed. That is anymore than any other breed of dog.. All dogs have the ability to become aggressive if handled wrong, abused, insecure, or mistreated. This dog was clearly attacking in defense of her master. I don‘t enough about the dog’s past to say why she had a history of biting.. Again there a huge number of these dogs on the street and are the most abused breed. They are used for fighting, hunting, protection and most are kept as loving and loyal pets. There as many as 20 different breeds that qualify as a Pit Bull type.. (4 most recognizable) So to make a generalization about a generalization is ignorant. Most Pits over 99% are well behaved. Do some research before making stupid statements

Posted on August 16, 2012 at 6:50pmIt‘s not the breed of the dog that’s the problem, it‘s how it’s trained. Back in the ugly days of the Civil Rights Movement, evil white racist cops in the South would buy German Shepherd puppies. And then they’d hire some black wino or drug addict and pay him to beat the puppies, beat them until they bled. And by the time that puppy turned into a 90-pound dog with a mouth full of sharp teeth, his mind had been conditioned to see black people as The Enemy. And they sicced them on the peaceful civil rights marchers, some of whom were children. But the dogs didn’t care, because all they saw were people who were the same color as the ones who hurt them when they were puppies. Fortunately, it backfired. Those images were seen all over the world, and they humiliated America. Made the whole country look bad. Gandhi and Martin Luther King were right. Passive resistance is far more effective than violence.

Posted on August 16, 2012 at 7:21pm@OUTRIDER WRITER, JL320, WATERTHETREE: Agreed. Genes play an ENORMOUS role in the behavior of animals; breed-specific behaviors and propensities are the result of careful (or not-so-careful) selection for physical and mental traits. You can’t just say “it‘s how they’re raised” because that is NOT the case. Bad breeding can cause behavioral instability, and combined with that extra-powerful bite, that is NOT a breed to be trusted (especially involving territorial situations with small children or other dogs). Period. End of story.

Posted on August 16, 2012 at 7:31pm@stumpy68 – It’s true that pitbulls are as aggressive as their owners, and good training makes a good dog. Having said that, however, this dog was on the attack. Whether it was an otherwise friendly animal or not is irrelevant. Pit bulls are capable of inflicting horrendous injuries. This dog may have been only protecting its owner, but in so doing, was endangering the people who were trying to help. It’s a shame the dog had to be put down, but there was no other recourse for these police officers.

Then the sheriff lied and said it tried to attack him. You can’t trust cops, that’s why laws that ban you filming their misdeeds are un-American and unconstitutional. Posted on August 17, 2012 at 9:45amGreat shot. Think about it. The officer had to:
1. Recognize the threat…that being from an animal that posed an immediate threat to the officer’s life or seriously bodily injury.
2. Draw his weapon from a carry position, and place ONE round into the threat while at the same time, we presume, ensuring that there were no innocent bystanders in the path of said round.
3. Keep his eyes on the threat until he was certain that the animal was no longer a threat, while at the same time, listening to all the people screaming at him.
4. Take time to replay the incident in his mind for his official report.
5. Ask his backup to call on the radio for the shooting team, and additional backup for crowd control.
If necessary, this officer would have done the exact same thing had the animal been attacking one of the “screamers”.

Posted on August 16, 2012 at 6:37pmAgain aggressive dogs are most often the product of their environment.. And yes pit types are responsible for 40-45% of the cases (13 average) this number goes up and down.. but the point is there are a huge number of these dogs and very few (albeit tragic) deaths caused by dogs and Pit types. They were breed to fight. When walking my dog (golden retriever), we have been involved in two incidents with pitbulls. Thank God we were able to get away without incident. I do not trust any situation with my grandchildren near this breed. If there is more than one the form a pack mentality. This is not hot air, this is fact. The breed is different — and many, not all, who own them, own them for a reason not related to the breed being gentle and passive.
Shooting that dog was totally proper, he was attacking that police officer and when a pitbull bites they can latch on and not let go. Their jaw power is amazing, they were breed to have this jaw power so they can kill more effectively. I truly wish we could ban them.

As a dog lover, it was especially hard for me to watch this video but the officer employed a justifiable level of force to protect himself from attack. On a side note, I was not very happy with the level of first aid being offered to the man flailing on the side walk. The officer could have maced it or tased it as well. If it were an unarmed man WHERE WOULD YOU AS5HOLES STAND. BELIEVE ME AN UNARMED MAN IS MUCH MORE DANGEROUS THAN A DOG….The only difference is an unarmed man knows he‘s doing wrong and that dog didn’t.

First off the article is a lie…it stated that the officer drew his gun when the dog approached him….BS
The officers gun was already drawn before the dog ever approached him…..The dog came at the cop because he had a gun ….And of course the NAZI GESTAPO agent shot the dog……This officer needs to be fired and then brought up on charges.”
This reply is for Mr. johnjamison,
When an officer, or anyone for that matter, is in a dangerous situation you don’t wait for the attack before you take defensive measures. A person with a knife can cross an average of 21 feet and stab you before you can draw and shoot, that dog was much faster.
The person that wrote the article made a mistake, that has nothing to do with the officer…DUH!!

Did the officers know what was wrong with the man before they were able to get to him? I doubt it. And seizures CAN be life-threatening… it‘s not like a petit mal where one doesn’t move much… some seizures are so bad you can bite your own tongue off, or cause yourself to have a concussion. IMO, human life trumps dogs (or cats or birds) or any other animal’s life ANYTIME. I love dogs and have had a few, but I have always been cautious about their natural instincts. This dog has bitten OTHERS and the man’s substance abuse problems and inability to properly train this pet got this dog killed!! An aggressive dog, no matter the breed, can KILL you. I am disgusted by the owner who seems to have honed and encouraged it’s aggression for his own purposes with regards to his abuse and like others who use their animals in this way, it shows just how SELFISH addiction is…no regard for anyone else including this poor dog. They were looking for some ******* who purse-snatched an old lady several blocks away, and they were canvassing the neighborhood. Wolfie Dog was just sitting in the livingroom with the cat when there was a loud banging on the door. I opened the door, and there was a cop standing there. And Wolfie Dog just freaked. He bared his teeth and charged. I never saw him so aggressive. I grabbed his choker collar and tried to pull him back, but he really wanted to eat that cop. And he weighs almost as much as I do. The cop unsnapped his holster and put his hand on his gun, so I had no choice but to slam the door in the cop’s face, drag Wolfie into the bathroom, and lock him in there. When I went back to the door I was shaking, and so was the cop. I bought Wolfie Dog when he was a puppy from a swamp ******* who breeds German Shepherds with domesticated wolves. (“Swamp *******” is not an ethnic slur, by the way. They call themselves that). Wolfie is a gentle person who loves kids and gets along well with cats. In fact, the neighborhood kids enjoy walking him for me. But for some weird reason, he really, really hates cops. I wonder why that is.

The cause of the large number of aggressive Pits running around today is that so many irresponsible degenerates own Pits and mistreat them because they think it is cool to have a dog that will attack strangers.
Let the junkie choke on his own vomit and start prosecuting owners of aggressive dogs for assault and attempted murder. You’ll see the rate of Pit aggression go way down.

How many people are killed by dogs? average 30 per year..by Pit types? 13 average (hardly fits your contention) … followed by Rottweilers at 6 average..The problem is that there are much fewer Rottweilers than Pit Types/mixes and as a result they could be considered more dangerous .. but not so fast according to the CDC, AMVA, and the HSUS, there is no one breed any more dangerous than another.. Pit types are strong and muscular and can be dangerous no doubt.. but so can Rottweilers, Dobermans, German Shepherds, Mastiffs and even Golden Retrievers.. When you make generalizations about a generalization (Pit Type) you look stupid.. I am not sure what you mean when you say regulated and bonded.. I will agree the owners need to be held responsible
