These Are Rick Perry’s New Attack Ads Aimed at Mitt Romney

Perry Releases Two New Attack Ads Against RomneyCalling Mitt Romney a “flip-flopper” may not be original, but still seems to resonate with the uneasiness many Republicans have with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. Coming off a poorly received debate performance, then, Texas Gov.Rick Perry is now trying to capitalize off that uneasiness in two newly-released attack ads aimed at Romney, his chief competitor for the Republican nomination for President in 2012.

On Monday the Perry campaign released an ad entitled “Words Have Meaning,” harking on a charge made by Perry during last Thursday’s debate that Romney altered the text of his “No Apology” book between 2010 and 2011 in order to remove a sentence that suggests Massachusetts’ “RomneyCare” was a model for the rest of the nation:

Perry immediately followed his “Words Have Meaning” ad with another on Tuesday called “Romney’s Race to The Flop,” accusing Romney of going back and forth in supporting the President’s “Race to the Top” education initiative:

In introducing Tuesday’s video, the Rick Perry campaign website writes:

“On issues important to American voters, Mitt Romney has never been known to stick to a position for long. As highlighted at the recent debate, he is finding it particularly easy to be both for and against President Obama’s national school testing and curriculum requirements known as Race to the Top.”

[...]

“Given the constant flips and shifts, most of Mr. Romney’s words seem to have expiration dates.”

When Perry first made the claims of Romney revising his book, the former Massachusetts governor became visibly agitated, and roundly denied Perry’s claims.

“Please don’t try and make me retreat from the words that I wrote in my book,” Romney said. “I stand by what I wrote. I believe in what I did. And I believe that the people of this country can read my book and see exactly what it is.”

Perry Releases Two New Attack Ads Against Romney

The Washington Post notes that Romney did change portions of the language in his book from it’s hardcover release in 2010 to paperback in 2011. However, the Post found that the changes were only in sharpening his language against Obama’s stimulus plan and healthcare plan, rather than reversal of support or “flip-flop.” The Boston Phoenix writes on the differences in regards to healthcare in Romney’s book:

“In the original hardcover, Romney tried to carefully distinguish between the Massachusetts law and the national version that was nearing passage as he wrote.

But the Massachusetts model has become Romney’s bête noire among conservatives, who loathe the national reform they call ‘Obamacare.’ The rewritten paperback swings much harder, proclaiming that ‘Obamacare will not work and should be repealed,‘ and ’Obamacare is an unconstitutional federal incursion into the rights of states.’”

A spokesman for Romney’s Free and Strong America PAC confirmed to the Phoenix:

“The book was originally written in the months immediately following President Obama’s inauguration. A lot has occurred over the last two years, and these updates reflect those happenings.”

The sentence in question in Romney’s book originally appears in the hardcover as, “We can accomplish the same thing for everyone in the country, and it can be done without letting government take over health care,” changed in the paperback to:”“And it was done without the government taking over health care.”

The Washington Post’s Glenn Kessler, however, points out that they key line may be the one that precedes the sentence in question where Romney writes (because it seems show Romney is willing to defer to the states):

“My own preference would be to let each state fashion its own program to meet the distinct needs of its citizens. States could follow the Massachusetts model if they choose, or they could develop plans of their own.”

As for “Romney’s Race to the Flop” released Tuesday by the Perry campaign asserting that Romney has gone back and forth in supporting President Obama’s national school testing and curriculum requirements, Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul has already responded:

“This is just another tall tale from Gov. Perry. Instead of spending time misrepresenting Gov. Romney’s words, Gov. Perry should take some time to explain why he thinks conservatives who disagree with him on providing in-state tuition to illegal immigrants ‘don’t have a heart.’”

Saul noted that the Florida town hall meeting remarks, central to Perry’s flop ad, use footage cut right before Romney says ““For me, get that back to the state level.”

My first reaction was that I didn’t like the attack ads…then I thought about it a little more, looked at the content and realized this kind of “gloves off” campaign is exactly what we need against Barack Obama who alongside the unions and the DNC will unleash a dirty smear campaign for the ages next year. I applaud Perry for being willing to go for the jugular, McCain wouldn’t do it and look what happened?

I will vote for any of the candidates before Obama. That said I do think Perry is a wicked man and will say and do anything to get elected. I believe Romney is hands down the best choice we have for POTUS. I do like Rick Santorum, Michele Bachmann, Newt Gingrich and Cain. Out of all of these I feel that Mitt not only will make the very best president but his policies and bills will actually be passed.

I am amazed at depth of hypocrisy of Perry. I am equally very impressed with the integrity, honesty and resume that Mitt brings to this race.

Actually Romney was correct in his word choice. He said essentially that this could be a amodel for other states not that it should be done at the federal level which is what Perry insinuated.

Also, Romney is correct with what he wrote in his book. Book was written after Obama’s inauguration – much has happened since then that required further clarification on issues covered in the book. But positions did not change – he just expanded on them. So to say that Romney is flip-flopping is innacurate. Also, books are routinely revised for that reason.
Romney stands by all the points made.
By the way it is a very good book and extremely informative about the issues, the corrections and consequently, the man.
He is evidently a very brilliant man.

Jack Welch makes a fair assessment why Romney will win the Primary and almost definately the general: http://tiny.cc/pefq9

Romney will most likely be elected in the Primary, him or Herman Cain, and then they will possibly pick each other for VP, if not using Marco Rubio. I am expecting either:

I would be very happy to vote for either Romney/Cain or Cain/Romney. To be very honest I could pretty much happily vote for any of the GOP candidates not only is the entire field better than Obama they are all a big improvement over McCain who I did end up very reluctantly supporting and voting for. I am just a very strong Mitt Romney supporter but as I think about it what I want most is Obama out of office. Once that is done then it is time for us to hold those we elect both as President and the other two houses feet to the fire and send them the message we are mad as hell and will not take it any more.

I notice Beck does everything he can to promote Perry. It’s too bad really…I’m voting for Romney because he is the only candidate with the knowledge and experience to turn this country around. Romney will be a steady hand as president guiding this nation through some very dark times. Don’t want Cain with no executive experience, and don’t want big talker with chest puffed out and lifetime politician Perry, who lets advisors make his decisions. Paul is looney, and Bachmann has never been a governor with the right experience. Santorum hasn’t been a governor either. Gingrich had too many affairs with congressional aides, cheated on two wives and married his mistress of 6 years, Callista. Too bad Gingrich wasted his years in Washington. He’s as eletable as Clinton if we want mistresses in the white house again! Huntsman is a rebellious democrat who dropped out of high school to play in a rock band. His dad has been saving him all the way along. Now he‘s rebellious again and Utah doesn’t want him…they want Romney! That’s pretty telling. Romney came in and saved the state, Huntsman then tried to destroy it. Romney 2012!!!

No conservative would ever say Mitt Romney is anything other than a progressive and at least if Obama was president you wouldn’t have to defend his unconstitutional behavior!!

And next to Rick Perry (Romney is a democrat)!! That’s right Romney is a democrat!!

to add to that someone should do anyonebutChristy.com!!

Mitt =’s anti-2nd ammendment! Pro-Gay Marriage (he won‘t say it but he’ll appoint the Judges to legislate it)!! Mitt is Pro Baby K*ller and anti-Freedom!! And besides abortion Christy is worse!!

      (Period)

I don’t think Perry is perfect, but I know where the MAN stands!! And this Independent conservative voter would be proud to vote for him!!

HERMAN CAIN works for the FED!!

And RON PAUL well let’s not talk about his earmarks!! I support Paul but he’s not perfect either!

Let’s stop the nonsense!! ROMNEY would lose to Obama because they are the same person and then it becomes an election of you know what you have. You don’t know what your getting!! Romney is unelectable, when this election is all about people putting their name and representations on the line to defend candidates!!

and Romney is a LIAR, Weasel, and in my observation he just wants to be President so his Daddy can‘t say he didn’t do anything with his life!! Prove he did something with the silver Spoon!! Romney’s not running cause he cares about Restoring America!!

      And that’s all

Perry certainly appears to not be a very good debater and I think he messed up on a couple of policies (i.e. immigration tuition assistance, the drug for 12 year olds) but I think he would be a pretty good president. I can’t see how any of the GOP candidates could be worse than what we have now.
As for the drug mandate on the 12 year old girls, Perry admits to jumping the gun on that—isn’t time to give the guy a bit of a break on that one since he is owning up to it??

I did see that Perry called him a progressive and I did read on wikipedia that his group is for social justice. I’m obviously taking the wiki info with a grain of salt. Some things that I want to point out to be fair is that the speech was given in April 2008, and everyone can agree that America has changed since then. They do not have a 38% Hispanic population in those states, nor do they have over $100 billion in goods coming across their border from Mexico every year. No one has a more conservative record than Perry – tort reform, capital punishment, NRA A+ rating, strong economy and jobs record in Texas, unabashed pro-life, anit same sex marriage Christian, strong states rights supporter, distinguished military record, repeal obummercare, audit Federal Reserve, voted against income tax, voted against raising sales tax and much more.

Perry passed the HPV with EXEC ORDER and knowing the conservative legislature was not in favor of it! For him to “flip it” once he began running for POTUS to “oh, I should have engaged the legislature”, is pure hypocrisy now. He STILL says he will err on the side of life……….so it’s still “GOVERNMENT knows better. Your Governor knows better”

Perry “flipped it” on the NY gay marriage issue just after getting in the race. Was in support of NY’s choice/states’rights…….but then got memo from his “religious” part and changed his mind.

I can allow people to make mistakes and rethink things. BUT……….Perry’s HYPOCRISY on calling Mitt out is LAME and SHALLOW. It‘s about the depth of Perry’s preparation to be running for POTUS.

SO……….where‘s Beck and Pat’s apology for calling Mitt a LIAR numerous times on the Friday show?? Beck is NO better than what he constantly slams the left wing media of doing. I USED to be an avid Beck fan. He has LOST me for sure. I‘m saddened by Beck’s lack of ‘honor’.

      @PATRIOTMAMA,

Mitt is far from a career politician he spent almost his entire career in the private sector and in his career as a politician he took exactly $1 a year for a grand total of $4. Many politicians make that much money in 1 second that he made over his 4 year career. Do not fall for all of the media distortions if you ever met Mitt in person you would know within a couple minutes almost everything you heard about him is totally wrong. He is a very decent man and very strong leader.

BTW, Mitt is very down to earth and far from an elitist. He is a very likable guy, maybe it does not all project that way on TV and the way the lamestream purposely likes to portray him but Mitt is as far from a snob as there is. Unlike Obama he does not look down on anyone, he will stand his ground and vigorously defend his record and go on the offense when attacked but I can guarantee you he has great respect for every human being and would respect the long haired completely pierced and tatooed long haired guy just as much as a very clean cut upper class elitist. That is the Mitt I know and like I said before a very decent kind hearted family man of very high morals.

Texas being a Border State has a huge issue with Illegals coming into Texas – Perry did not invite them in – they are here because Clinton, Bush and Obama haven’t done anything to close the borders – how would you Brain Surgeon’s deal with the Illegals that are already here. Especially in Texas were it’s 65% Hispanic.

Just announced today – 18,000 Drug Cartel gang members in Texas alone setting up Drug Networks in all 50 States. We catch them – send them back to Mexico and they keep coming back.

No just ANYBODY……..we need to be wise enough to get the BEST of those running for the GOP nomination!

Perry has HUGE issues. Romney is a man of character and thoughtful analysis and is prepared for the national and international challenges. Those who slam Romney at this site…….have you done your OWN research? Have you read his book? Have you read from those that SUPPORT Romney or just HATE Romney?? Be honest!

If you want to hate Romney, you will find just that out there. If you want to know truth, you can find that, too.

Romney’s not a perfect human being but I find less of the imperfections I deem deplorable for public office (pay for play one of them!) AND…….Romney has TURN AROUND experience.

Now that came out a little different than I wanted. I am Christian but I hate seeing other Christians, especially those that are in the public eye, being so blatantly dishonest and basically a liar. He shows that through this ad.

Now I also believe Romney is Christian and I am happy that at least he doesn’t use smear/lie tactics to create these ads. He only stressed Perry‘s ’proud’ stance on immigration and how an extremely liberal governor praises his stance on immigration. That I would say is a fair ad.

You need to get a clue, Mitt is far from a RINO, I will agree about Perry he is worse than a RINO but Mitt is for government getting out of the way of business. Mitt is for securing our borders and putting the hammer down on illegal immigration. He is for drilling, natural gas exploration, increasing production of coal, shale oil and extensive expansion of utilizing all of our resources to get us off Foreign oil. Mitt is for strengthening the family, strengthening our military and our security both here and abroad. He is for renegotiating and signing new treaties that are in the U.S. favor for once. Mitt believes life begins at inception and is pro-life. He is believes very strongly in our constitution and has vowed he will appoint only judges who share that belief. He has vowed that he will get rid of Obamacare and stand up to China and Iran and country’s that hate us. Mitt is far from a RINO, matter of fact I believe he is more qualified than all of the other candidates combined to be president and his debate performances show how great command he has of the issues and how clear of a thinker he really is. You need to do your homework Mitt will be one of the greatest presidents this country has ever had.

Your videos are as misleading as Rick Perry is a liar. Rather than post links to doctored videos that omit sections of dialogue so as to intentionally deceive (as Perry did today), I suggest you do a little more research.

Mitt Romney has always personally been against abortion. He felt (as many libertarians and conservatives do) that the government had no business making this decision for women and since it was the law of the land, he vowed to live up to the law. As Governor, when actually confronted with bills to sign that dealt with abortion, he said he could not support such laws with a good conscious. He admitted openly that he had a change of heart but yet he is called a flip-flopper? Read the truth for yourself:

      http://www.ontheissues.org/governor/Mitt_Romney_Abortion.htm

Mitt Romney has always supported the second amendment as a fundamental right granted by the constitution. He is supported by past Chairman of the NRA and the Gun Owners Action League (GOAL) who both understand that Romney is a strong supporter of gun rights. This is another issue where the liberal media has attempted to paint him as a flip-flopper in a blatant misrepresentation of the truth. Read this to educate yourself:

“I am supporting Governor Romney because he is the candidate who will protect our Constitutional rights and strengthen our nation.” Craig Sandler — 10 year NRA Executive Director (retired)

As of the past few days, I support Herman Cain for President. As for the Romney-Perry comparison, they each have their problems, but it is important to consider the enviroment that each has been in. Perry was (and is) governor of Texas — against that backdrop, he doesn’t look too conservative (maybe even progressive on a few issues). Romney was governor of Massachusetts — against that backdrop, Romney was actually conservative. The absolute WORST (Republican) candidate by this measure is Huntsman — his (liberal) Utah Supreme Court pick had to be stopped by the Utah Senate; he was consistently smug and condescending about the (Republican controlled) legislature; and he even supported “domestic union” legislation after Utah had passed a constitutional amendment prohibiting just that.

      @Gonzo
First of all, I see your comments on here all the time and for the most part have respect for your insight whether I agree or disagree with what you’ve said.

With that being said, of course I know there’s a difference between a Georgian and a Mexican. I was trying to point out that not EVERY illegal gets in-state tuition. They had to have lived in TX for 3 years, graduated from a TX high school, and pursue citizenship. It‘s not the kid’s fault that their parents are irresponsible and stupid jerks. It’s similar to the abortion debate for me. Should the children be punished for the sins of the parents? Also, when you have a large population of peoples that pay no income taxes, how do you get to that revenue? If there are bright students that could potentially go on to become wealthy Americans buying non-necessity goods and services, why wouldn’t you want that?

Lets talk about your solutions. How would you encourage people that are here illegally to pursue citizenship instead of continuing to hideout as an illegal? Perry tried to coax them with a $20K/yr education at a TX school instead of a $30K/yr. I don’t see how that is so terrible. Sometimes it’s easier to get a rabbit to come out of hiding if you offer a carrot, than if you just swing a stick at random bushes…

Lastly, this is a state issue. The TX legislature voted for it overwhelmingly. TX is a conservative state, how did the pass if the people didn’t think it through?
