These Are the 8 Beers Americans Are No Longer Drinking

Some of America’s most famous beers have lost a tremendous amount of their national sales over the last five years. 24/7 Wall St. looked at the 23 largest-selling beer products in America and discovered eight that have lost a staggering 30 percent or more of their sales between 2005 and 2010.

Most of the beers whose sales declined that much have one thing in common—they are “full-calorie” beers, or about 145 calories a can. Instead, beer drinkers have turned to “light beers” (or “lite”), which have 100 calories a can, and “ultra-lights,” which are closer to 90 calories.

Surprisingly, Budweiser, for years the best-selling beer in America, has lost 30 percent of its sales over the five-year period. Given that Budweiser sold 18 million barrels last year, that’s a massive loss–more than 7 million barrels less. Sales of Bud Light, on the other hand, held steady at just over 39 million barrels during the five year period. Six other products on the 24/7 Wall St. list have also lost half their sales since 2005.

Other than lighter-calorie beers, drinkers have also turned to imports, such as Corona, and to craft beers, which are produced, and usually also consumed, in relatively small regions, according to Eric Shepard of beer marketer’s INSIGHTS. Overall, sales of beer from 2005 to 2010 rose 1.9 million barrels to 208.4 million barrels. But sales of the top 20 brands dropped 10 million barrels to 149 million, a sign that Americans have turned to craft beers and imports.

24/7 Wall St. used two databases to do its analysis. One is kept by SymphonyIRI Group, one of the largest consumer research firms in the U.S. The other is from specialist research firm, beer marketer’s INSIGHTS, Inc.

These are 24/7 Wall St.’s “Beers Americans No Longer Drink:”

Started home brewing in May. It’s cheaper and much better than those mass produced beers. They are getting much less of my money now days and probably forever. (until Obama finds a way to over tax or outlaw home brewing. )

I’ve had dozen and dozen of micro and home brews I yet to fine one with that crisp clean taste of Budweiser. Don’t get me wrong there are alot of good beers out there but Budweiser(not light) Is as sharp as a razor.
As for Imports Moosehead has it hands down all though Beck’s and Heniken are close seconds.

As a home brewer, I can say that you don’t get a fresher beer than home brewed! Budweiser uses rice for their, in short, base grain(approx.30%. Less flavor and leaves you feeling bloated. Using hops and grain that you have grown is very rewarding and fiscally helpful too! I empathize with everyone battling the bottle, especially having to drink O‘Doul’s!!Yuck!

I’ve been home brewing for the last 6 years and have vastly better beer than most people buy. Don’t get me wrong these brands are fine beers but when compared to the other 25 or so styles and the many sub-styles there of…. people that only drink this style of beer are really missing out on the virtues of time honored beer styles from across the globe…..

Besides with no food taxes the ingredients are free, as in tax free beer. ;)

The biggest reason these “NASCAR beers” have lost sales is because a growing number of American beer drinkers have discovered well-brewed craft beers that use correct quality ingredients – water, hops, malted barley, and yeast – not rice and watered down brews that taste more like carbonated water. American brewers like Sam Adams, Sierra Nevada, Dog Fish Head, and others are re-introducing to America what great beer is supposed to be. Thank you, all. Try any of them or a High Seas “Loose Cannon” and you’ll never look at a Budweiser the same.

You’re right about these old post Prohibition beers that would even offend toilet water. But, I was stationed at Ft Drum, NY back in the mid ’80s and found that a lot of those Canadian beers where only slightly better. I suppose spending three years in Germany just prior had affected my taste buds. After spending almost nine years in Germany with an extended TDY at SHAPE, Belgium I can say that I truly miss the beers from those countries. Even had German beer on the Eiffel Tower.

The list is comprised of beers that deserved to lose sales. Meanwhile, Yuengling and Sam Adams in the east, Henry Weinhard’s in the west, and loads of smaller brauhauses in between are making the best beer ever seen in America. Now that people have the choice of good ales they have stopped buying the cheap junk. You can even get good beer at your grocery store for a minimal premium over anything from St. Louis or Milwaukee. Although there are some fantastic local breweries in those two cities that put the big employers to shame. I bet large numbers of Miller and AB employees, when they stop at the bar after work, are drinking higher end fare rather than getting drunk on the junk they produce at the breweries.

Originally Texas brands, Lone Star and Pearl are now brewed by Miller. As for the Shiner brands, they are good when they are fresh.

As a long-time (35+ years) beer can collector and amateur brewery historian, I haven’t consumed any of these 8 brands – except for Budweiser (sporadically) in many years. Bud is a good example of a light American-style lager, but I just don’t drink much of that style.

Otherwise, my moderated consumption (3 – 4 per week) is towards American craft-brewery brands, which represent the best of our entrepreneurial spirit. I generally prefer India Pale Ales and Stouts. And I have taken a recent liking to bourbon barrel-aged ales and stouts – the flavor of bourbon without the burn.

Then how come import sales keep going up? I think more and more people don’t drink it for the same reason I never did. It doesn’t taste good. It’s mostly made of rice instead of barley, but doesn’t have the dryness of a good rice beer like they make in Japan. Also, I don’t think they’re spending as much on advertising as they used to. It’s probably hard for people in other countries to understand how easy it is to get Americans to use an inferior product just by brainwashing them with clever ads.

Miller Genuine Draft was my choice when I drank, but I have celiac now and can’t drink beer. But, agree, don’t drink and drive.

If you would still like to enjoy a beer now and then there are a few gluten free beers out there now. Or you can buy the grains(buckwheat, sorghum, rye, etc.) and homebrew very tasty beers, especially the stouts and Belgian dubbels. Just ask your local brew supply or try out an online supplier, many ship for free.

Well, whoever told you that hasn’t visited the close-by convenience store – the “budwiser” truck is there 4 times a week – every other day – and the other brand comes twice a week – The convenience store has a large walk in cooler for cased beer, and five doors of singles and 4 packs, quarts, etc. They make more money on beer than on gas (which isn’t hard to believe) or cigarettes – which is a bit hard to believe – since they not only sell all the major brands, but now have a room for fresh made rolled cigarettes (rolled and packed in a box while you wait) with your favorite blend.

On average, more sober drivers kill themselves or someone else every 40 minutes.

Most are the drivers themselves, and most of these aren’t wearing seatbelts.

All MADD has done is lead adolescents and teens away from alcohol and into the arms of illegal drugs. No one cards them for pot, and that’s what there using, before a lot of them move on to coke and then maybe acid, ecstasy or meth.

      Great job activists!

That might be true but by law an accident (fatal or not) is automatically the fault of the person with alcohol on their breath even if they are well within legal limits so in reality those numbers are really much lowered considering the massive amount of idiot drivers
