These Are the Cars & Trucks Americans Are Buying the Least

The number of cars and light trucks sold in the U.S. fell 25 percent over the past five years, from over 16.4 million for the model year beginning September 2005 to 12.4 million in the last complete model year.

The sales of some models have fallen much more than that during the same period. To see why sales of some vehicles dropped so much, the writers at 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the sales of cars and trucks, provided by car industry research firm Edmunds.com, that have lost the most in unit sales between the two periods.

The auto industry has suffered greatly during the latter half of the recent decade. To ensure that the vehicles on the list did not simply suffer from just the economic downturn, those that lost the most in total unit sales, and those that have had sales drop of more than 50 percent–double the industry trend—were the ones that were most closely investigated.

24/7 Wall St. also added base vehicle prices provided by the manufacturers, EPA data on gas mileage, and quality and reliability ratings from JD Powers.

Model age, direct competition, manufacturer quality perceptions, car company balance sheets and gas prices can all contribute to the collapse of a model’s sales.

The Cars Americans Arent Buyin Any More10. Buick Lucerne
Decrease in units sold: 62,266
Pct drop: 71.5 percent
Base car price: $29,730
Fuel efficiency: 17 city, 27 hwy
JD Powers quality score: 4/5
JD Powers reliability score: 4.5/5

The Lucerne was introduced in 2005. Sales have dropped so much that the car was discontinued this year and production stopped in the early summer. Buick may have positioned the car badly. It has been marketed as a full-sized sedan to compete with mid-priced luxury vehicles made by Lexus, Acura, Lincoln and Mercedes. The Lucerne may be less expensive than those models, but buyers do not consider it in the luxury vehicle class.

The Cars Americans Arent Buyin Any More9. Chevy Colorado
Decrease in units sold: 62,977
Pct drop: 67.2 percent
Base car price: $17,395
Fuel efficiency: 18 city, 25 hwy (for 4-cylinder)
JD Powers quality score: 3.5/5
JD Powers reliability score: 3/5

The Colorado is Chevy’s mid-sized pickup, and within the GM family, it competes directly with the GMC Canyon. Both were introduced in 2004. The truck may have too much competition to lift current sales by any significant level. It sits in a segment of the SUV market that includes the Ford Ranger, the Toyota Tacoma, and the Nissan Frontier.

The Cars Americans Arent Buyin Any More8. Toyota Avalon
Decrease in units sold: 64,325
Pct drop: 69.6 percent
Base car price: $33,195
Fuel efficiency: 20 city, 29 hwy
JD Powers quality score: 3/5
JD Powers reliability score: 4/5

The Avalon is Toyota’s mid-priced, large-sized sedan. Overall, Toyota sales suffered this year after much of the company’s Japan production was shuttered because of the March earthquake. It is only now resuming in full. The Avalon is in a highly competitive portion of the market. Every major car company has a vehicle with similar characteristics and comparable price levels. Hyundai’s success in this part of the market has been remarkable over the past three years. The Avalon was first introduced in 1994 and is on its third generation.

The Cars Americans Arent Buyin Any More7. Dodge Dakota
Decrease in units sold: 70,039
Pct drop: 83.8 percent
Base car price: $23,210
Fuel efficiency: 15 city, 20 hwy
JD Powers quality score: 3.5/5
JD Powers reliability score: n/a

The Dakota, marketed under the Ram brand, is a mid-sized pickup. It was introduced in 1986. The current, third generation of the truck was launched in 2005. The version was offered with only a club cab with two rows of seats. The Dakota was discontinued this year, with the last one being produced in August.

The Cars Americans Arent Buyin Any More6. Chevy Tahoe
Decrease in units sold: 75,814
Pct drop: 50.9 percent
Base car price: $37,980
Fuel efficiency: 15 city, 21 hwy
JD Powers quality score: 4/5
JD Powers reliability score: 3.5/5

The Tahoe is Chevy’s full-sized SUV. Fully loaded with factory-installed features, the Tahoe can retail for as much as $55,000. The Tahoe also has direct competition within the GM family — the GMC Yukon. In addition, virtually every other U.S. and foreign car company has a vehicle in the same market segment. The truck was first sold in 1995. The current generation of the Tahoe, and the Yukon, were both introduced in 2007.

The Cars Americans Arent Buyin Any More5. Jeep Liberty
Decrease in units sold: 77,650
Pct drop: 55.9 percent
Base car price: $23,250
Fuel efficiency: 16 city, 22 hwy
JD Powers quality score: 2/5
JD Powers reliability score: 2.5/5

The Liberty is the mid-priced model among the six that Jeep offers. The company currently offers more than one incentive to draw buyers — usually a sign that demand is low. Among these offers are zero percent financing for up to 60 months, and a $3,000 cash allowance. The Liberty was first introduced nine years ago. A new generation of the SUV was launched in 2008. Sales have declined since their peak in 2004.

The Cars Americans Arent Buyin Any More4. Silverado 2500HD
Decrease in units sold: 77,741
Pct drop: 53.1 percent
Base car price: $28,415
Fuel efficiency: 12 city, 15 hwy
JD Powers quality score: 3/5
JD Powers reliability score: 3.5/5

The Silverado is Chevy’s flagship pickup. It competes with the industry leading Ford F-series and the Dodge Ram, along with several other pickups made by foreign manufacturers. The Silverado HD is the heavy duty version of the truck. It can pull a load of up to 17,800 pounds. The first HD models were introduced in 2001. Sales of the less-expensive Silverado 1500 have fallen by 21 percent over the past five years.

Update: Be sure to click on the above link to see which cars are in the top 3. You may be disappointed to find out that even Ford has not been unaffected by the recent downturn in car sales.

I would only buy Ford because it’s not Government Motors. My dad always had Ford Trucks, until he bought a Toyota truck……I can’t even remember how old it is, but it’s old, runs great. I had a Ford Taurus that I bought used, and it always had some strange noise in the rear end and some computer thing kept going out that would make it race when in park. I do have a 2007 Chrysler, but that was before the bailout.

Well said. I’m similarly a GM fan through and though, but when it came time for a new vehicle I opted for a Ford.

GM even makes it a bad idea to buy their older cars, unless you’re getting one that has all aftermarket parts available. They immediately stopped supporting their own vehicles when mother government took them over and gave them to the unions.

But I said three years ago I would never buy a GM ever since the illegal baaiout and the screwing of the bond and stockholders. Plus I detest this administrations partisan union stance and and it’s putting the UAW on the board. I retired a couple of years ago and I am driving the last Astro. This is a general reply to the article, not to BB671. (Blaze, I wish you‘d make it easier to reply to articles rather than other people’s remarks!):
I’m a big The Blaze fan and GM fan, but this story is full of inaccuracies. The Lucerne came out in 2005 (7 model years ago!) and was overdue for replacement. Most cars are replaced after 4-5 years. It also came out at a time when Buick, and really all of GM had too many similar cars competing against each other (ie: Buicks vs. Pontiacs vs. Chevy vs. Saturns. The Lucerne was a nice car that really never had a chance. The Colorado? It never did well because GM was trying to reinvent an old market that was no longer popular. It, and the Canyon, competed with other trucks that have also gone away: the Ranger (in production in last form since 1993, dead for a few years now) and the Dakota. The Avalon? Not a midpriced sedan as the article reads. A top of the line sedan for Toyota. One level below a Lexus. It has never sold well because you could have a Lexus (and the name) for almost the same price. The Liberty? More of a niche vehicle that never really lived up to the original Cherokee it replaced. The Yukon? Another example of GM trying to go too upmarket and losing it’s focus in the process. Too many fancy versions like Denali’s and Escalades and hybrid models. Make ‘em more affordable (do away the unions) and they would sell much better.

The Mustang is more of a “want car”, not a “need”, The Tarus dropped because they came out with the cars to replace it like the Fusion. The Fusion is an Awesome car. I still have my 98 Tarus wagon, but on vacation I rented a Fusion, Wow, what a nice car. Once you drop the model, people go to other things.

Those two maintain decent JDP scores on quality and reliability, though, unlike a lot of the others. I think with the Taurus, it’s more a case of burnout — what the hell is a Taurus? A bland, vanilla blob of a car that even looks old now. It was cut once before. Mustang is harder to explain — unless it‘s just that younger buyers don’t have the deep visceral connection to the model that some of us older folk do. It’s like it has become just another street/sport car in a segment that is increasingly crowded and just doesn’t command the attention and respect that newer and more exciting vehicles (and yes, probably more reliable too) do.

      Posted on September 30, 2011 at 11:48am

Mustang is on the list because GM & Dodge suddenly put out cars that are good competition to the Mustang. For a few years there, there was no Camaro, and no Charger. Ford had no competition, now it does, and the sales are falling. Ford also keeps raising the price. In 1999 I was able to get a NEW mustang GT for about $24000. Now, that’s about the price of a base car, and the GT is priced too high for me to consider a new one now.

Taurus is there because Ford seriously dropped the ball on the Taurus. When they were planning on phasing out the Taurus, they put out a really cool concept car called a Ford 500. Then, when they went to release the procuction car, it looked nothing like the concept, and was very bland. Then Ford incorrectly thought that the problem was the NAME of the car, and changed the name of the 500 to the Taurus (which was then out of production). That was a HUGE screw up for them, and the’ve been paying for it ever since.

#1 is the Chrysler 300. It was cool when it came out, and sold well. Now, there are lots of other cool full-size sedans out there to compete with, and it lost its new-ness. People are angry at Chrysler for taking a bail-out, and are buying smaller, more effeicent cars on top of that. No surprise that they aren’t selling.

@MBRIZ… some people believe in science? So does that mean if you DONT buy a volt you dont believe in science??

How about the science of the “carbon footprint” of those big batteries that are full of TOXIC chemicals in the Volt and all hybrids? How about the science that proves you can reduce the “carbon footprint” of your vehicle by buying a similar size NORMAL car and buying carbon offsets? The math shows that to “make up” the difference for milage between a Honda Civic and Civic Hybrid you would only need to buy about $100 worth of offsets vs. $5000 difference in price?

And, of course, everyone knows it was warmer during the Mideval Warming period, before Man polluted the environment with all these greenhouse gases… how does that work??

Unfortunately, politics now trumps science.. and you have been duped.

I think they are selling least, because since we will all soon be living in our vehicles, people have chosen to buy vans…so they have a little more room.

To save you time, here are the other three:
      3. Mustang
      > Decrease in units sold: 93,829
      > Pct drop: 58.2%
      > Base car price: $22,310
      > fuel efficiency: 19 city, 31 hwy
      > JD Powers quality score: 3/5
      > JD Powers reliability score: 4/5

The high point of auto legend Lee Iaccoca’s career was not his revival of Chrysler but the launch of the Mustang in 1964. Many car industry historians say it was Ford’s fastest selling car since the Model A. Over 400,000 Mustangs were sold in the car’s first model year. The current version of the Mustang is the fifth generation of the automobile. Ford upgraded the Mustang engines this year, but that has not helped revive sales. The Mustang is in a highly competitive part of the market, which includes the Chevy Camaro.

      2. Ford Taurus
      > Decrease in units sold: 108,777
      > Pct drop: 62.4%
      > Base car price: $25,555
      > Fuel efficiency: 18 city, 28 hwy
      > JD Powers quality score: 4.5/5
      > JD Powers reliability score: 3.5/5

The Taurus is one of the most successful Ford vehicles of all time. Its first model year was 1986, and Ford had sold one million units of the vehicle by 1989. The fourth generation of the Taurus was launched in 2000 and was discontinued in 2006 due to slow sales. Ford revived the Taurus in 2007, and upgraded it again last year.

      1. Chrysler 300
      > Decrease in units sold: 111,596
      > Pct drop: 78.9%
      > Base car price: $27,170
      > fuel efficiency: 18 city, 27 hwy
      > JD Powers quality score: 3/5
      > JD Powers

Ford is the last ray of hope for American auto maker. GM & MOPAR are good as gone who would have thought in the 1970′s when they all made beautiful muscle cars this day would come? The eco-fascist’s killed the American auto maker plain & simple no body built a better car then the Americans for decades & they destroyed it all in the matter of a decade. I highly doubt American auto makers will ever recover from this. Lets just hope Ford can push on & be the last of the giants to stand on there own two feet. As for GM & MOPAR they will die out in the next decade mainly because the greedy communist unions will bleed them dry. The only hope for them is to go to non union states & tell the eco-fascist’s to suck it with the mpg standards horse crap.

If Ralph Nader hadn’t sued the pants off of GM for trying to make a small car, we‘d all have smaller more fuel efficient cars and we would’ve had them 3 decades ago. This would have meant that we‘d have less use for outside oil over those 30 years and we would’ve had a more competitive market of cars to offer to overseas buyers. Ralph Nader campaigns as a liberal environmentalist who wants to keep people safe, but in reality he is a threat to the safety and profitability of this nation.

@STB – You are obviously too young to have driven a Corvair. Not a Nader fan, but his book about it “Unsafe at Any Speed” was unfortunately. It was most dangerous in the Spyder version with the turbocharger that gave an unbelievable torque reaction besides the steering issues. VERY fast car for those brave enough to drive one. As far as the drop in sales that most of the auto manfacturers have suffered, one might also look at the near 20% real unemployment rate.

They don’t own it. Please get your info from someone besides becky. The bailout saved my job along with 100 of thousands down the automotive food chain, people that aren’t collecting unemployment, and are paying taxes, and GM has paid back a huge chunk of the money. But don’t let facts get in the way of your hate filled ramblings.

@ MBRIZ. It was a totally illegal bail out and everybody involved, including Bob Lutz, should be prosecuted. Listen to his interview with Larry Kudlow. Shocking. He is completely in the tank for your commie hero, Obama. If they had followed proper bankruptcy procedures, GM and all the suppliers would have survived albeit in a leaner form. Union commies like you would be out of a job and the rightful bondholders would have have gained in the long term. Capital formation in this manor is the essence of our wonderful free market system and must not be interfered with by the likes of your ilk, lest we end up like eastern Europe after the war. My family and friends immediately sold our GM cars including my beloved Corvettes after the cue. I kept my 63 split window though. Until there is a trial and GM returned to it’s rightful owners, I will buy Fords. No tea Party member should own GM and Chrysler products. Support capitalism and buy a Ford.

@MBRIZ———What GM has done is use the TARP money that was placed in escrow by the Treasury Department to repay the remaining interest bearing debt of $6.7 billion. Given that this money was not paid for with profits earned by the company it is effectively a debt-for-equity swap not a loan repayment. In other words, the Treasury approved the repayment of the loan with the escrow funds and the government therefore hopes to recover the remainder of their investment by selling common stock after GM’s initial public offering that is intended to take place this year.—–Thus, to re-iterate, GM did pay back its loan — sort of. Just a fact.

@MBRIZ, we as the American peolple have every right to be “angry” with the bailout, This admin seems to think taking money from the American people and their children and future grandchildren is just fine and dandy..Especially when the benefactors of that money go to the Unions and Government employees, well let me tell you something, you may be singing a song of praise because you kept your job, but look at the number of people that have lost theirs because of this communist administration, not to mention the homes they lost because the government so selfishly decided to get into the auto industry, the banking industry and the housing industry..so while your singing and jumping for joy, just remember one thing..The Communists always sure up their “Useful Idiots” and believe me this is one of those times..your job has not been saved Mr. the American people will see to that! Hopefully the American people will make darn sure the Unions will have there day too.

Bought myF150 in 2005 after 2 months of reading articles and opinions on trucks. Looked up the inventory of local dealer, sifted through all of them and compared them to various reports.

I walked in with the pront out, VIN and a check for what I would pay…longest part of the day was waiting for them to find where it was on the back lot.

I’ve loved “Big Blue” since day 1 and have never stopped!

Yeah I kinda doubt that, unless you’re talking something like an MG. As noted, you just couldn’t build a car like that today. And knowing now how ridiculously unsafe they are, I doubt anyone in their right mind would even want to drive one of the original ones, on a routine basis at least.
