These Are the Pictures of The White House‘s ’Alice in Wonderland’ Party

A lot has been said over the last two days about the White House’s now-infamous “Alice in Wonderland” Halloween party from 2009. It was an extravagant affair featuring actor Johnny Depp and filmmaker Tim Burton in costume. Conservatives have panned the president for having such a party during economic turmoil, and generally keeping it hush-hush. Liberals (and even some conservatives) have defended the president, either saying the party was mentioned to some degree, or that the president‘s Halloween plans shouldn’t be national news.
No matter what side you take, it’s still conceivable that you would want to see pictures from the event, right? We thought so.
Intrepid blogger Zombie tracked down some of the photos from the night and posted them here. We’ve included some of them below (Depp is dressed as the Mad Hatter, Burton is the one with the eye patch, and the dog, well, that’s the Obama family canine named “Bo”):

By the way, the White House’s official statement defends the party as no secret:
One of the anecdotes that has received wide attention [from a new book] has been a supposedly secret Alice in Wonderland themed Halloween party in 2009. This was an event for local school children from the Washington DC area and for hundreds of military families, and certainly nothing that the White House was ashamed of.
While acknowledging that the press was allowed to attend, which in itself would seem to cast doubt on any alleged secrecy, the author contends that there was “no media coverage beyond the standard, limited pool report noting the president’s presence.” We would invite all readers to read that extremely detailed and colorful pool report, or the stories that emerged from the party, and decide for themselves. In addition, the event was previewed in the official White House Daily Guidance and discussed by then-Press Secretary Robert Gibbs on camera from the podium — before he dressed up as Darth Vader at the party of course.
But it should be noted that neither the “detailed” pool report nor Gibbs’s briefing make specific mention to the Alice part of the party. Press Secretary Jay Carney addressed that issue in his daily briefing (via Mediaite):
“There was a story about Johnny Depp being there?” Compton asked.
“There wasn’t a publicity event for the outside, Carney replied. “It was a military event for their children and their families inside the White House where the press came, photographs were taken. It was contemporaneously known who was here. If that’s — if we’re trying to hide something by bringing in the press, we’re not very good at it.”
“For the record, there’s not one statement from this White House –” Compton stated.
“But, again, the purpose wasn’t for — we do a lot of these things July 4th, other events here, including other events that are geared towards military families and their kids where the purpose isn’t to publicize them externally for you guys but to have a nice event for them here, which is different from trying to hide anything.”
Tommy Christopher, a member of the White House press corps, notes the event was listed as “Pool spray at the top,” which means “there’s a photo op at the beginning of the event, and then the press leaves.”
“This attack might make some sense if this event had been for administration staff, or donors, but the focus was on military families,” he concluded. “Why would the White House think the American people, Tea Party or not, would begrudge them anything?”

This Administration has acted no different than others where an individual won the lottery but had no concept of how to manage their new found wealth. similar thing happened here in Colorado when RoyBoy Romer picked a second in command who LOVED the power but had no concept concerning how to use it to benefit others.

Romney, nah. His religion wouldnt allow anything like this, or tea, coffee, and coke.
Perry, I could for sure this type thing. He seems like a party guy what would just drink beer and lets all kind of crazy stuff happen.
Huntsman, even though a Mormon I think he is the type that would do weird things. So yeah I could see it.

To call him “a nasty, meanspirited man” I assume you have meet him? Futhermore, outside of the newsletters that have been proven he didnt type where would you get that idea about him? Is it because he is for following the Constitution? Is it he wants American money to help Americans? What part of the Constitution and America do you not like?
So please tell us in detail your reasoning for calling Dr. Paul, doctor, veteran, congressman, father, grandfather, husband, and follower of our founding fathers “a nasty and meanspirited man”.
Oh and by the way, our country is broke, the fed broke it, big spenders in Washington broke it, and presidents that are all the same broke it. (Clinton, Bush, Obama) all the same, just like the crew of GOP candidates other than Ron Paul. So basically, for my kids, I dont care if Ron Paul was the Grinch, Voldemort, and Darth Vader rolled into one. We need a drastic change for this country and he is the only one proposing real change.

The only reason its big all of a sudden is it was supposed to be for military families and this is an election year.2009 was not.The only family I see in pictures is his family. If it really was a party for the military families, then it doesn’t really bother me. As someone else asked, where are the military families? But one could counter that there are no pictures of any guests so it’s hard to say just who this party was for in the first place. The only thing that bothers me about this is that while the rest of the coutnry is struggling through a rough recession, the Obamas are spending tax payer left and right on entertainment. Now if they used their own wealth for this party, then I have no problem with it. I begrudge no one spending their own money on whatever they want. But tax payer dollars…that’s low.

Moochelle would naturally dress up as a baboon or a cow. And yet, many didn’t even have the money to give out candy this past October. It was a quiet night and ended very early in our neighborhood.

I’m so confused as to why this is just a story now. This wasn’t a blocked event, the media was in attendance. We’ve all heard about it before (or if you haven’t, it‘s because you didn’t read or watch the news much in 2009). There are tons of legitimate things to complain about with Obama; a Halloween party that was a known event over three years ago? Not one of them, IMO.

Have a real comment? Which part of this are you upset about: military families getting to attend? The press being allowed in? The fact that you didn’t care enough about reading or watching the news in 2009 that you just found out about this now?
The doofus-in-chief has made plenty of errors, mistakes, and outright dubious actions. This isn’t anywhere high up on that list.

You and a few others are the exceptions.If you will google this event and trace it to the report by “The Telegraph” you will read a totally unbiased account. The childrens’ party was open to reporters and well covered. The lavish party afterwards, which lasted well into the evening, while it was attended by some reporters, it was with the understanding that it WOULD NOT be reported to the general public. It was “covered up” at the request of the administration for fear of the reaction it would cause at a time when unemployment was at 10%. These crass ,low rent self entitled elitists KNEW it was inappropriate to engage in such in your face waste of the taxpayers money that, instead of doing the right thing by abandoning the idea, went ahead and had the bash regardless. If you believe this was acceptable, knowing what you know AFTER educating yourself than you have LESS insight than even Obama. He ,at least ,was aware of the outrage knowledge of this extravagance would cause.

Again, it was known. Heck, it’s been featured in comedy articles: Cracked.com included it in an article on the 5 most bad*** Halloween parties. If a comedy site made mostly on infantile humor knew about it, how does it come as a shock to our “informed” readers here?

The CHILDRENS’ party was known, publicized , fodder for comedians and on and on. The party attended by a flock of obamabots WAS NOT. The lavish bash took place after the c…h..i..l..d..r..e..n.. left! The earlier party included childrens’ games, Haloween treats. re: candy and the like. Johnny Depp and Tim Burton were not even required to sign the W.H. log book for fear of how it would look to us serfs. If you still don‘t get it don’t waste my time by responding. I will just assume you like that fog!

So, the press was there, it was reported. What part of this lavish party was not reported; the after party with the celebrities who were there during the original as well? Odd that you know about it if the information was never released to the public, isn’t it… perhaps because it was released?

I think I missed the main stream media inquiring of the honored just how honored they feel to be honored secretively. How honored could the token attending military families feel knowing that millions of other military families were being honored without their knowledge? How gratifying. Lastly, at what cost to the taxpayer was this secret honorating A-list party?

I did not like what Bush was doing (I am a conservative) but this guy keeps me awake at night worrying. I hate it when my favorite actors get politically involved because my contempt bleeds over to them. There are several that I wouldn’t pi*s on if they were on fire now. Johnny Depp!!!???? I haven’t been to a movie or even rented one since this joker took office. I just wish everybody else would do the same! This president is like a criminal using a stolen credit card!
