These Are the Top 10 Cities Where Violent Crime Is Rising

For years, experts have maintained that increases in unemployment and poverty result in rising crime rates. However, data released earlier this year by the FBI shows that despite a terrible economy and rising unemployment, there’s been a marked decrease in the national violent crime rate, dropping from 431.9 crimes per 100,000 individuals to 403.6.

This is the fourth year in a row crime has gone down, even as unemployment and poverty have continued to skyrocket, leaving some experts stumped.

But despite this relatively unexpected national trend, there are still some cities where crime rates have increased. Using statistics from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports database, researchers at 24/7 Wall St. identified the 10 metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) that bucked the national trend and experienced the largest increases in violent crime from 2005 to 2010.

Looking at all of these cities, there were few clear trends for any of the things that experts say cause crime to increase. Granted, some of the areas where crime has risen have high poverty rates, low median income, and high unemployment rates. But then again, others are quite wealthy, with high median income and poverty rates half the national average.

National violent crime rates that improve as the economy worsens might suggest that unemployment and poverty may not be the main drivers of crime. That the cities with the largest increases in violent crime are so different suggests the same.

So why the increase in violent crime in these cities?

As it turns out, there were a few common trends: the spread of regional gangs, changes in law enforcement tactics, and funding issues. That would certainly explain it.

These are the cities where violent crime is soaring.

Cities Where Violent Crime Is Soaring10. Worcester, Mass.
5-year Increase in Violent Crime Rate: 96.5
Violent Crime per 100,000 (2005): 374.4
Violent Crime per 100,000 (2010): 470.9
Murders per 100,000: 1.7

The rate of violent crime in the Worcester area increased more than 25 percent between 2005 and 2010. The increase is driven by the number of assaults. In 2005, there were fewer than 2,000 counts of aggravated assault in the region. The number increased nearly 50 percent by 2010 to 2,974.

The region has a high median income — more than $10,000 per household above the national rate — below-average unemployment and low poverty. Despite these positive factors, Worcester’s violent crime rate, 470.9 per 100,000 residents, is well above the national average of 403.6.

Cities Where Violent Crime Is Soaring9. Pueblo, Colo.
5-year Increase in Violent Crime Rate: 101.8
Violent Crime per 100,000 (2005): 483.4
Violent Crime per 100,000 (2010): 585.2
Murders per 100,000: 2.6

Pueblo experienced an increase in violent crime of more than 20 percent between 2005 and 2010, a period in which the national rate dropped more than 14 percent. In 2008, Pueblo was the only county in Colorado where violent crime and property crime both increased. Because of that, according to the Vail Daily, county law enforcement received a $400,000 grant.

Deputy Police Chief John Ercul described his biggest concerns as “guns, drugs and gang activity,” all of which were increasing. Under President Obama’s 2009 recovery plan, Colorado was awarded $29.8 million for law enforcement based on its violent crime rate. Only about half a million was awarded to Pueblo County.

Cities Where Violent Crime Is Soaring8. Bismarck, N.D.
5-year Increase in Violent Crime Rate: 118.6
Violent Crime per 100,000 (2005): 109.9
Violent Crime per 100,000 (2010): 228.5
Murders per 100,000: 1.8

In 2010, the Bismarck MSA, which includes Bismark and Mandan counties, had the lowest unemployment rate in the country — just 3.9 percent compared to a national average of 9.6 percent. Despite Bismarck’s extremely low unemployment, healthy median income and poverty rates well below the U.S. average, violent crime more than doubled between 2005 and 2010.

The rise was driven by a substantial increase in aggravated assaults reported in the area. In 2005, there were just 35 cases of assault within the city limits. In 2010, that number increased nearly five times to 158.

“The total numbers are relatively low, although they are serious,” said Grand Forks Police Chief John Packett in a recent Bismarck Tribune report. While the violent crime rate has gone up dramatically, it is still well below the national average.

Cities Where Violent Crime Is Soaring7. Napa, Calif.
5-year Increase in Violent Crime Rate: 122
Violent Crime per 100,000 (2005): 358.1
Violent Crime per 100,000 (2010): 480.1
Murders per 100,000: 1.5

The Napa County MSA is located to the northeast of San Francisco. The area fared poorly, as did much of California, between 2005 and 2010. The poverty rate jumped from 7 percent to 11.7 percent and unemployment more than doubled. Violent crime increased from 358.1 per 100,000 people (below the national average) to 480.1 per 100,000 (well above the national average.)

Local residents were asked what their top concerns were, and one of the biggest was violent crime, reports the Napa Valley Register. In response to rising crime, especially related to youth gangs, the county has drafted a Gang and Youth Violence Master Plan to help law enforcement officials.

Cities Where Violent Crime Is Soaring6. Lawton, Okla.
5-year Increase in Violent Crime Rate: 123.8
Violent Crime per 100,000 (2005): 674.9
Violent Crime per 100,000 (2010): 771.7
Murders per 100,000: 4.4

Like other metro areas with rising violent crime, Lawton’s economic conditions are all over the map. Poverty rates above median income are bad, but unemployment rate is particularly good, standing at 6.4 percent in 2010.

The violent crime rate of 674.9 per 100,000 residents in 2005 was one of the highest in the country. The number rose to 771.7 last year, the 15th highest in the U.S. According to NewsOK, while violent crime has increased in the region, law enforcement staffing has actually decreased.

Cities Where Violent Crime Is Soaring5. Mobile, Ala.
5-year Increase in Violent Crime Rate: 137
Violent Crime per 100,000 (2005): 397.1
Violent Crime per 100,000 (2010): 534.1
Murders per 100,000: 7.4

Mobile is one of the poorest cities in the U.S. In 2010, more than 20 percent of the residents lived below the poverty line. In that same year, 12.8 percent of Mobile households earned less than $10,000.

While certain types of violent crime, including murder and robbery, actually declined between 2005 and 2010, the total rate jumped by 35 percent because of a massive rise in cases of aggravated assault.

Cities Where Violent Crime Is Soaring4. Odessa, Tex.
5-year Increase in Violent Crime Rate: 158.7
Violent Crime per 100,000 (2005): 499.5
Violent Crime per 100,000 (2010): 658.2
Murders per 100,000: 5.2

The number of violent crimes committed in Odessa increased nearly 32 percent from 2005 to 2010. In 2010, there were 658.2 violent crimes per 100,000 people, significantly more than the national rate of 403.6.

Meanwhile, the number of robberies jumped from 76 to 110. The number of aggravated assaults increased from 535 to 741. Twenty percent of the city’s population lives below the poverty line, well above the national average.

See the top 3 cities with soaring violent crime here.

We mostly have Mexicans coming across the borders from Mexico…not Hispanica… the crime rate is very high with illegal..we spend 338.3 billion a year on imprisonment..and now Mexico is sporting the Hezbollah Drug Cartel.. and they are crossing over into our borders as well..They have been decapitating many Mexican in Mexico…even for just blogging to warn other about the Cartel check points where you will most likely be robbed or killed. Odessa is almost midway between Juarez and Dallas. That’s what hispanics have to do with violence. A lot of hispanic males think they’re going to make easy money with the cartels. Too bad they don’t realize the cartels run on blood. Odessa is not a large city so they don’t have the assets Dallas has. I can see the cartels easily over running this city to peddle their poison around the country. The illegal problem is not about race, it’s about are we a sovereign nation or not? We are being invaded. Wake up.

Actually, I think it is important to differentiate between Hispanic (a race) and Mexican (a nationality). The liberals refuse to see the difference, but we conservatives are intelligent, and should understand the nuances of the discussion.

Liberals cannot see the difference, and that is why they scream racism all the time, even though the claim is patently false. When this discussion happens in the public sphere, the rank and file American does indeed notice the difference, and he notes the idiocy of the left, and this in turn, brings us voters on a daily basis. This is one big reason conservatives are going to win 2012 across the board – independents refuse to side with screaming babies.

Latinos/Hispanics also see the hypocrisy. It sways them.

When someone uses ‘hispanics’ improperly, as in this case, we lose voters. We don’t want to lose voters, do we?

The more we allow illegal hispanics into our country, the more this is to be expected. Its a fact of life. Hispanics do not have the same values and character as Americans.

Illegals are the cause of more damage to this country than anything else. They suck our welfare (food stamps), put extra vehicles on the roads that we tax payers have to pay for, take up more space in jail, cause our school systems to have to hire more teachers, take away blue collar jobs, and now they have begun to start their own business ILLEGALY here in America and send their money back home to relatives.

Well…… I just don’t know if these stats are true for the locations are not about most crime. It could be because Atlanta, Ga. has more crime than good in its state than the rest of the country so it would be telling the same tale too many times.

I live in Georgia and if you watch the local news in Atlanta there are two are three shootings, 1 are 2 murders, a couple of burglaries, a few carjacking’s almost every night in this city. I think the more diversity in people in a city the more crime you have because I am from a smaller city about 50 miles west of Atlanta and crime continues to grow as our college grows with drinking, sex, a small band of O.W.S. and crime.

Even the suburb I live in is seeing more and more issues with vandalism and out of control teens up to robbery. If you want proof of the illegal invasion, go to any Wal-mart after 7pm, or on the weekends. Between having a democrat mayor, losing the EADS contract, losing our cruise ship this year, and a few other setbacks, this city is having a rough time of it. The common thought around here is that Mobile is completely corrupt. And I will say that the police do not have the presence that they should, and a lot goes on that should be stopped before it happens, and not caught after the fact.

It would be interesting to see if the increased crime rate is due to migration of gang members. My guess is yep. I am familiar with Pueblo and have seen increased TV coverage on killings there. When I first moved to Colorado, the area I am in you maybe had one murder or shooting every two or three years. I moved here in 1998. Once the gangs started moving in more, about 2003 to 2004, the crime went up exponentially. Now we have two to three murders or shooting every other month.

Montana, Idaho, Wyoming have far more stable demographics and far less crime and potential for invasion.

Well dopey, if you know anything about Texas you would know that Odessa and Victoria are the armpit and pubic hair of Texas. These cities have worthless Government teat suckers out the wazoo. The people in Odessa, close to Midland could get jobs, but they had rather do dope. Anyone who knows the area knows how Odessa is a stinkhole. I live close to Odessa and i wont even go there because of the mentality there. It’s a society thing and certainly not Texas thinking. Lots of illegals in both towns…comprende?

Wondering why good ole New Haven, CT didn’t make the top ten. Then I realized that it was only DEMOCRAT Stronghold’s that are up and coming crime areas they listed. New Haven, Hartford, and Bridgeport are perennial leaders among the DEMOCRAT Constituent Crime Areas, and don’t need to be put on a johnny come lately high crime list.

But which Cities have the largest crime rates.
For instance the murder rate in Reading texas in this article was 6.9 per every 100.000
But in Detroit the murder rate is 34.8 per every 100,000
This article is miss leading. If a city had 1 murder per 100,000 last year and had 4 murders per 100,000 this year it would be a 400% increase. yet it would be over 800% safer than detroit.

Very selective of you LOCKED..actually that same FBI table says violent crimes have been steadily decreasing since at least 1991. With a few exceptions, like 2005-2006, Violent Crime, Murder and Non-negligent Manslaughter, and Forcible Rape have gone down just about every year. Since 1991 the violent crime rate has declined from 758.2 per 100,000 population to 403.6 in 2010. The murder and non-negligent manslaughter rate has gone from 9.8 to 4.8, and the forcible rape rate has fallen from 42.3 to 27.5 in the twenty-year period. So the answer to your peurile question is “NO”…no one’s thanking Obama for this,..are you?

“So the answer to your peurile question is “NO”…no one’s thanking Obama for this,..are you?”
Of course not. Unlike many here, I do not consider the POTUS to have a significant effect upon crime rate. Rather it is a state level issue, where what each individual state does contributes much more than whoever is in the Oval Office.

I live literally in the center of Worcester. . . My wife and I have a view of the city hall clock tower a block from our condo. . . We’ve seen a huge rise in violence this past year. . . we’ve had two shootings outside our building in the past year alone and I think the sanctuary city aspect plays a huge role. . . The funny thing is that Worcester really doesn’t issue CCW permits, and crime and violence are on a huge upswing, while almost all the towns surrounding Worcester are very easygoing about issuing CCW’s and they have very low crime rates. . . Coincidence? Heck no. . . Wake up Massachusetts. . .

Actually, property crime has gone down even more than violent crime…of course it has nothing to do with Obama or Bush or any federal admin, it has to do with the aging of the baby boomers and the longer sentences for ‘career’ criminals (among other reasons).
