NEW YORK (The Blaze/AP) — An exhibit that opened Thursday offered New Yorkers a rare glimpse of life inside North Korea, including children singing in a theater, stark views of Pyongyang at dusk and North Koreans bowing before a monument of the nation’s founder, Kim Il Sung.
“Windows on North Korea: Photographs From the DPRK,” is a joint exhibition by The Associated Press and the state-run Korean Central News Agency, and features a mix of archival and contemporary images.

The show was timed to open before the 100th anniversary of the birth of Kim Il Sung on April 15 and comes two months after the AP expanded its operations in Pyongyang to include writers and photojournalists. The AP became the first international news organization to have a full-time presence in the secretive communist country when it opened a video bureau in 2006.
The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and the United States have never had formal diplomatic relations, and the two nations have experienced tensions over the years, particularly over Pyongyang’s nuclear ambitions. North Korea has tested two atomic devices in the past six years.

Tensions have recently eased somewhat. Late last month, the United States and North Korea announced an agreement that calls for Pyongyang to freeze its nuclear activities in exchange for food aid. Days later, a senior North Korean nuclear envoy traveled to the U.S. to attend a university forum while the U.S. and North Korea held more talks in Beijing to finalize the food aid.
“It is our hope that this exhibition would give exhibition-goers visual understanding of the people, customs, culture and history of the DPRK, thereby helping to deepen mutual understanding and improve the bilateral relations,” Kim Chang Gwang, KCNA’s senior vice president, said in an address at the show’s opening.

This year's celebration comes less than two weeks after Kim Jong Il's re-election to the party's top post and the news that his 20-something son would succeed his father and grandfather as leader. (AP Photo/Vincent Yu)
Images on display included a 1953 KCNA photograph showing residents helping to rebuild Pyongyang’s central district after the Korean War, AP photos documenting visits by foreign dignitaries, as well as everyday scenes ranging from sunbathers at the beach to shoppers inside a modern department store.
The photographs “give us rare views of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, a nation of great interest to the world, though little known,” said Kathleen Carroll, executive editor of the AP.

People began to celebrate on the eve of 99th anniversary of Kim Il Sung's birthday. April 15 is called "The Day of the Sun" in honor of the former guerrilla fighter who founded North Korea in 1948. (AP Photo/David Guttenfelder)
“In this exhibit, we are offered two perspectives of the DPRK – as viewed by her native daughters and sons from KCNA and by AP journalists visiting to chronicle news and daily life there. We can appreciate the different styles and techniques and points of view,” Carroll said. “These photographs also show us that different people can find common ground,” Carroll said.
Several of the photographs are by AP Chief Asia Photographer David Guttenfelder, who has made many reporting trips to North Korea since 2010.

“Daily life is really what I try to focus on when I’m there. … It’s unscripted, it’s candid,” Guttenfelder said. “For people to see their own life in other people’s lives, I think it has a lot of power to break down barriers.”
The show also includes images taken by KCNA journalists who participated in a joint workshop in October led by AP instructors. It runs from March 15 to April 13 at The 8th Floor gallery in New York City.

The AP, an independent news cooperative founded in New York and owned by its U.S. newspaper membership, has operations in more than 100 countries and employs nearly 2,500 journalists across the world in 300 locations.

Posted on March 16, 2012 at 9:49amHere again is another perfect example to show the Obama (democrat) “New age progressive communists” ….Of what life under their ideology looks like. I would encourage any Obama lovern “New age progressive communist” to explain how their sick twist ideology that government knows best and has all the answers is ever successful . You that follow and faint for a “New age progressive communist” like a Obama are feeble minded believing giving up a free, independent life is a utopia …Well start looking at the photos .Because out side of a gay Bravo twist that is exactly what Obama wants, and you fools fall for. Big government , corrupt union control ..Once again your democrat party was taken over by the communist years ago it has to this point bankrupted the country and now wants to finish the job bankrupting you from the very thought of having individual freedom .

My recollection of Pyongyang is that it was a dead city, and the country itself as backwards as it could be. Doesn’t seemed to have changed much.

When America is finished, evil will reign! Its the way its going to be and nobody at this point can stop it. I feel Becks warnings will only prepare those who will suffer through it not to comply but to go out in glory believing that they are right! It will be so! This day is coming and soon! This America was hard to imagine when I was coming of age but when you read revelations, you know that America is finished and Christians in it persecuted and killed.

Posted on March 16, 2012 at 9:33amThis gallery has one agenda, to promote Communism. On the gallery’s web site I noticed several mentions of Cuba on the right under the“Press” section. The following quote was from an article listed in that section.
” As the Cuban economy became dollarized, and competition for scarce jobs and resources intensified, racial discrimination and racial inequality increased. White Cubans began to use racist arguments to deny blacks access to the most attractive sectors of the economy (such as tourism), those in which it was possible to earn dollars or other hard currencies”
Bottom line, according to article, capitalism breeds racism.

Posted on March 16, 2012 at 11:54amIn 1965, Bezmonov was recalled to Moscow, and began to work for Novosti as an apprentice for their classified department of “Political Publications” (GRPP).
******* Soon he discovered that about three-quarters of Novosti’s staffers were actually KGB officers, with the remainder being “co-optees”, or KGB freelance writers and informers like himself.
******* However, Bezmonov did no real freelance writing; rather, he edited and planted propaganda materials in foreign media, and also accompanied delegations of Novosti’s guests from foreign countries on tours of the Soviet Union, or to international conferences held in the Soviet Union.
Sounds like our current media right?

The Soviet KGB and Military were always at odds.
We now have the same thing here. Sure, the Military and CIA have had truf war disputes before, but they haven’t been at odds like the KGB and military of the USSR was; until now. Think about it. The former CIA director, Leon Panetta, is now the Secretary of Defense, not a General, not an Admiral, not a Colonel, no we have a spook heading up our defense. And you wonder why our Marines have to disarm in front of him…
If you have never sat through and watched the Bezmenov lectures you should. Educate yourself, the truth is out there.

Posted on March 16, 2012 at 9:27amMy boss was in North Korea in 2005. The shot of the kids singing is funny because he said that they had kids sing for them. He said that the kids walked into the room with their heads hung down and eyes blank. When the music started, a grin came across their faces, their eyes lit up and they started dancing and singing. As soon as the song was over they went back into the same desolate look that they had when they walked in. He said it freaked them all out to see it. They have murals on the school walls of American soldiers committing war crimes on North Korean civilians and most of the buildings are run down leftovers form the 30′s. The power would flicker on and off for no apparent reason and the citizens wouldn’t even dare to make a comment about it while it happened. Also, he thinks they fed him dog at a restaurant. He said he was happy to get back to China and when he flew into LAX he got off the plane and kissed the ground.

Posted on March 16, 2012 at 8:45amNorth Korea is a very interesting country. Many will be foolish enough to label the DPRK a Communist country. When in fact North Korea is the complete opposite.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Korea#Government_and_politics
“North Korea is a self-described Juche (self-reliant) state, described by some observers as a de facto absolute monarchy or “hereditary dictatorship” with a pronounced cult of personality organized around Kim Il-sung (the founder of North Korea and the country’s only president) and his late son, Kim Jong-il…”
“The structure of the government is described in the Constitution of North Korea, the latest version of which is from 2009 and officially rejects North Korea’s founding ideology of communism…”
“Professor B. R. Myers argues that the WPK is not a far-left or Communist party, but rather a Far-right party. Myers holds that the party has a platform of “race-based, paranoid nationalism that has nothing to do with Marxism-Leninism,” making it more comparable to 1930′s Japan than other Eastern-Bloc communist parties…”

North Korea is not strong financially; There is only a small amount of fertile land which is endanger by flooding, lack of food has stunted the growth of the civilians, etc. With or without nuclear weapons North Korea will be a difficult country to go to war against.
