‘They Hate Us’: Writer Criticized for Provocative Article on the ‘Toxic Mix of Culture & Religion’ Harming Middle Eastern Women

Foreign Policy Magazine’s cover story for its May/June 2012 issue, entitled “Why Do They Hate Us?“, is certainly stirring up controversy. The article, which provides a lens into the lives of women who reside in Arab countries, reinforces much of what we already know about the challenges they face in the region. But some women — particularly feminist Muslims who would typically be praising the fact that these tragic details are being exposed — are criticizing the article’s writer, Egyptian-American Mona Eltahawy.

The piece delves into the ugly side of fundamentalism and covers female genital mutilation, physical violence that has worked its way into the legal code and the overall denial of fundamental rights in the Arab world. Eltahawy’s words do anything but hide the problematic mindset she believes has taken hold in the Middle East.

“Name me an Arab country, and I’ll recite a litany of abuses fueled by a toxic mix of culture and religion that few seem willing or able to disentangle lest they blaspheme or offend,” she writes. “When more than 90 percent of ever-married women in Egypt — including my mother and all but one of her six sisters — have had their genitals cut in the name of modesty, then surely we must all blaspheme.”

Eltahawy was also careful to state her view that many nations — including the United States — also mistreat women (or, at the least, do not treat them equally). But her claim, when it comes to the Middle East, is that Arab societies hate women. From economics to human rights abuses, the writer tackles many of her qualms with the region, while tying all of the elements back to an overall issue she sees embedded in the culture:

Not a single Arab country ranks in the top 100 in the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report, putting the region as a whole solidly at the planet’s rock bottom. Poor or rich, we all hate our women. Neighbors Saudi Arabia and Yemen, for instance, might be eons apart when it comes to GDP, but only four places separate them on the index, with the kingdom at 131 and Yemen coming in at 135 out of 135 countries. Morocco, often touted for its “progressive” family law (a 2005 report by Western “experts” called it “an example for Muslim countries aiming to integrate into modern society”), ranks 129; according to Morocco’s Ministry of Justice, 41,098 girls under age 18 were married there in 2010. [...]

How much does Saudi Arabia hate women? So much so that 15 girls died in a school fire in Mecca in 2002, after “morality police” barred them from fleeing the burning building — and kept firefighters from rescuing them — because the girls were not wearing headscarves and cloaks required in public. And nothing happened. No one was put on trial. Parents were silenced. The only concession to the horror was that girls’ education was quietly taken away by then-Crown Prince Abdullah from the Salafi zealots, who have nonetheless managed to retain their vise-like grip on the kingdom’s education system writ large.

And the aforementioned information is only a sliver of the examples and facts she provides in the article. When it comes to her concluding thoughts, Eltahawy urges individuals to stand up against the widespread hate that has been thrown in females’ direction:

First we stop pretending. Call out the hate for what it is. Resist cultural relativism and know that even in countries undergoing revolutions and uprisings, women will remain the cheapest bargaining chips. You — the outside world — will be told that it’s our “culture” and “religion” to do X, Y, or Z to women. Understand that whoever deemed it as such was never a woman. The Arab uprisings may have been sparked by an Arab man — Mohamed Bouazizi, the Tunisian street vendor who set himself on fire in desperation — but they will be finished by Arab women. [...]

We are more than our headscarves and our hymens. Listen to those of us fighting. Amplify the voices of the region and poke the hatred in its eye. There was a time when being an Islamist was the most vulnerable political position in Egypt and Tunisia. Understand that now it very well might be Woman. As it always has been.

Although compelling, the author’s claim of this “toxic mix of culture and religion” in the Middle East is being met with resistance from those who see the article as an overall simplification of the issue at hand. Some even maintain that it reinforces negative stereotypes and provides a basis through which Western politicians can more readily rail against Arab society.

Foreign Policy Magazine Cover Story Covers Women In Middle East

The three arguments that Business Insider (BI) recaps from critics are as follows: “It just reinforces negative stereotypes of Islam in the West,” ”It reinforces a false monolithic view of the Arab world,“ and ”It perpetuates the notion that Arab society itself is anti-women.” For these reasons, among others, Eltahawy’s piece is being dismissed by some and lambasted by others. Here are some of the critiques, as presented by BI:

Books by “native voices” like Eltahawy have become increasingly popular post-9/11 in a Western world attempting to justify its wars and invasions against Islam and the Middle East, Monica Marks writes in The Huffington Post. “…these native ‘testimonials’ tell us what we in the West already know — that there’s something inherently misogynistic about Muslims and Arabs,” she explains, providing war-mongering politicians a justification no one would argue with: Islam and Arabs must be fought because they oppress women.

And instead of acknowledging the pre-Islamic socioeconomic roots of patriarchy, she instead blames only religion, pandering to Islamophobia, according to Al-Monitor’s Samia Errazzouki. [...]

Critics say there are wide differences among the Arab countries that Eltahawy fails to take into account. They believe her premise of “all Arab men hating all Arab women” is too simplistic. “Why did Egypt’s hateful “they” elect only 2 percent women to its post-revolutionary legislature, while Tunisia’s hateful “they” elected 27 percent, far short of half but still significantly more than America’s 17 percent?” says Max Fisher in The Atlantic.

Regardless of what critics say, the article does, indeed, shed light on an important and timely issue. Additionally, it provides many Middle Eastern women who live under the thumb of authoritarian rule a shining light and reassurance that their stories and their plight are making their way into the headlines.

    Response to Critics:
“It just reinforces negative stereotypes of Islam in the West.” The problem: It’s not a STEREOTYPE of Islam.” Read the Koran; study Sharia.

”It reinforces a false monolithic view of the Arab world.“ Monolithic? Nope. Islam runs throughout the Arab world. Although there may be slight differences in the degree of compliance with the Holy Book and Sharia.

”It perpetuates the notion that Arab society itself is anti-women.” How can you divorce “Arab society” from Islam? You cannot. That society rests upon the foundations of Islam.

Bravo to the brave and honest Ms. Eltahawy!

I think they hate you because of their lack of self esteem. You are in the line of fire and bare the brunt of their anger. The fact is that the Muslim countries are a backward looking people and having no real industry or notable achievements as a society makes for a self hating under current that manifest its self in various ways one of which is woman hating!
Another outlet for this hate is the Jihad idea that is preached by the Ayatollahs.
In the name of religion they think they can get to heaven by way of killing their fellow humans and they really think their god supports this kind of atrocity!
Like, who else would even consider worshiping a god that likes to cut peoples heads off except a self hating bunch of depraved idiots!?
Then when someone points out the stupidity of their belief system to them their response is to threaten to kill them!

The same fatwah was put forward by a prominent Morrocan Imam. Islam thinks so poorly of it‘s women that it will consider allowing it’s men to have sex with female corpses. It was Muslims that took Europeans and Americans captured at sea and sold them into slavery. Yet people like Calypso Louie “embrace Islam” when it was Muslims who captured and sold their ancestors into slavery in the first place. If the west does nothing, the complaint is that we should since “we are the most powerful nation and it is our duty to help.” if we do then it is an invasion against Islam. Until women in the middle east and moderate arabs are willing to stand up and be counted and create their own Spring, this attitude will stay in place. The Imams will not give in to loss of power.

Look what the muslims did to Lebanon. Chased the moderates away and the ones remaining live in fear from Hezbulah and the Iranian masters. Guess what, the muslims are bringing their crap here and we are letting them. There maybe a good muslim here and there but in the end the majority will do what the Imam tells them what to do.

Until the muslims stop this anti west and anti Israel war and allow free exchange of ideas between people, I will not trust them.

The Christian Church started in the East and grew to superb power under the tribulation that Rome had inflicted upon It. It soon became the stare religion and flourished under the civil infrastructure of a massive empire. The eastern Church then lost It’s sublime power and began to compromise. At length It had rejected the absolute authority of the Word of God. In the end, after manifold chances to repent, God rose up Islam to remove the candlestick from it’s midst in judgment. Because they had exchanged that Holy Truth of God for a lie they were given over to strong delusion to believe the lie. Now this threatens the West and our chances of repentance are becoming narrower and narrower. We compromised Genesis to “science” and now have laid open the doors for “interpretation” of God Holy Word. The Bible is not to be interpreted. It is absolute. It shapes us by It’s Truth.

**** “Sharia Law is headed our direction thanks to the radical left”

Correct. It may be from different reasons, though, than you presume. Your comment about “our women having it easy” in comparison with Islamist cultures indicates that you don’t fully grasp the issue. It‘s far beyond women’s rights in our society, it is in the realm of women’s privileges now.

One factor, that is without a historical precedent, is the left’s idea of multicult, and the “all societies are equal” relativistic concept. Little do they know that these ideas were produced by the First Directorate (a soviet agency responsible for ideological subversion of western societies) as methods of destabilization and corruption. These concepts were not intended for domestic consumption at all. The CPSU was a strict cultural hegemon, suppressing any meaningful cultural expression, bare some superficialities. The western left, being on an autopilot set in place by the CPSU and the gramscian “Frankfurt School”, is perpetuating these concepts, unaware of their purpose. Useful tools indeed, though the original impetus is no longer present.

The second factor is the radical feminism. A concept from the same source, and with the same goals. But there is another layer that has not been, in all likelihood, anticipated. I don’t have time to address it at the moment, I’ll take a raincheck. Let me just state that the radical feminism would be instrumental in inviting sharia, no matter how it sounds

When we invaded Iraq we should have gone in with
500,000 troops, taken out Sryia, Iran, hezzbolah, and Hamas.
and came right back home. End of story.

Just how nasty and EVIL is Islam? I was shocked to read this article “Egypt plans ‘farewell intercourse law’ so husbands can have sex with DEAD wives up to six hours after their death” from a British Newspaper. Link to the article below.

I’ve read about this and just when you think you have heard just about everything the Muslims come up with something new to creep you completely out.

Does the “farewell sex” come before or after the “farewell beating”?

It is odd that the only sound from NOW is crickets. NOW really doesn’t care about what is happening to women in islamic countries. Why is it only us, the conservatives who are engaged on a “war on women” that see this horror and speak out against it?

Don’t the women of NOW realize that if the muslims succeed, they will be the first ones stoned?

I don’t care to learn about a culture that dresses their women in bee keeper attire, won’t stand up for what is moral and correct, and most important wants to limit my personal freedoms. They need to wiped from the face of the earth not Israel. I mean what kind of a people take a young girl and destroy her nether regions. I don’t get it!!

Some maintain that it reinforces negative stereotypes……….Can anyone name a positive stereotype of Islam’s treatment of women?

God bless this woman for speaking out.

It’s not their hymens being cut. That’s no big loss. Every woman who has sex loses it anyway. It’s something much worse. Go look it up.
