Thieves Raid Lincoln’s Tomb, Steal Copper Sword

Thieves Raid Lincolns Tomb

After preserving the Union and ending the abomination of slavery only to meet his demise by a cowardly bullet shot to the back of the head, it is more than expected that our 16th President be allowed to rest in peace. Unfortunately, thieves appear to believe otherwise, as the 3-foot long copper sword attached to a bronze statue of a civil war artillery officer over President Abraham Lincoln’s tomb in Springfield has gone missing.

The Springfield State Journal-Register reports that an employee noticed that the sword was cut from the statue last week. Dave Blanchette, a spokesman for the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, told the Journal-Register that the theft is believed to have been the first to state property at the Lincoln Tomb State Historic Site since 1890:

“‘We just cannot imagine why someone would even think about doing it, let alone climb up the steps and actually do it,’ Blanchette said.

Site officials plan to repair the statue, he said.”

Other than the theft, no significant damage was done to the rest of the statue. CBS St. Louis notes that the same sword was stolen in 1890. While officials noticed the sword missing last week, CBS reports that officials think the sword was stolen sometime between September and early November. The statue is on the tomb’s balcony which is closed to visitors, leading staff to believe that the the thief must have come at night when there were no guards.

Thieves Raid Lincolns TombCBS reports that a security guard had been posted overnight after a 1987 incident in which racist graffiti was spray-painted on the tomb, but budget cuts ended that position within a few years of the incident. Five teenagers were arrested for the graffiti. Blanchette told the Journal-Register that the tomb suffers an incident of vandalism about once every decade.

CBS writes that the tomb was dedicated in 1874 and is the final resting place of Abraham Lincoln, his wife Mary, and three of their four sons. Lincoln’s body is placed in a specially designed steel and concrete vault beneath the floor of the burial chamber, according to the Historic Sites Commission of Springfield, Illinois.

I live just a couple blocks away from the cemetery in which Lincoln’s tomb is located there was a time some years ago where people spray painted swastikas and K.K.K. signs all over the tomb. Sad this town is pretty crap.

I see no exclusions in the Constitution for a president to:
      1.Suspend habis corpus
      2. Arrest and jail members of the 5th estate who disagreed with the president for the duration of a conflict.
3.Make war on a people who voted to leave the union by means validated in the Declaration of Indepence and the Constitution.
      4. Confiscate private property on a massive scale.
      5. Endorse the war made by him on old men, women and children (Non combatants).
Just to name a few that this FINE PRESIDENT did while in office. Sounds like Obama doesn’t it.

This country has remained in a civil war more or less since the Civil War. But like in the days of Lincoln, who I do not think was such a great prez., this country is on the brink of really large-scale rebellion. A good prez. in 1861 would have found a way to AVOID THE WORST WAR IN American history. Lincoln did not. He encouraged it because he thought the North would win quickly and easily. WRONG.

After the burning of Atlanta, Sherman was given free will (to do as he wanted, as they were celebrating) to the rest of the Confederacy. He raped, robbed, terrorized civilians to Savannah then went north along the coast then west northwesterly through South Carolina then North Carolina where my folks are from. My folks’ recollections are that the neighbors buried valuables and food. Killed hogs and cattle, burned fields so the 100,000 union troops couldn’t seize it. But Shermans’ army had three waves of offense from what I was told when I was young, I’m 58. at the time I was 4-6 y.o. The troops would come in nicely dressed and ask if we would help them. It didn’t matter what you said. Then a few days later a second round of union troops would ride up and not be so nice. They would bust in and take what they wanted. The third wave was called (by Sherman,“The Angels of Death”). would come into towns and farms killing, robbing, raping, doing anything to survive.

Just a little side note for anyone interested…

More has been published about the American Civil War than any other era in US history. But for all that has been written about the war, it’s astonishing at how little we seem to really understand it, especially the reasons for Confederate defeat.

Yes, the North had more Industry, more people… probably a 2 to 1 advantage, but included in this number are Whites and Blacks from the slave states comprising about 1/4 the total Northern Army.

The main reason why the South lost the war is too much cotton! The south was exporting millions of bales by land and sea. One of the great ironies of the war was that the industrial North fed its soldiers fairly well, whereas the agricultural South did not. Planters just grew too much cotton!

Another major problem was the desertion rate of the Confederate Army, and it was about double that of the North. Most Southern soldiers left at the call of their women back home, who were in such dire straits that they rioted in nearly every major Southern city and many smaller ones. They also wrote letters to their men encouraging them to desert.

In a very real sense, one can say that it was Southerners who defeated the Confederacy, with, of course, a bit of help from their lack of foresight, obsessiveness with the cotton business (and not people), caterwauling women… and yes, us Yankees.’

    Oh SNAP! Lmao!

No ya’ll won because we made a huge blunder at Gettysburg. The Confederate Army just had too many superior Generals. If the Rebels had of taken that high ground, it would have been over. But that is not the way it ended up, nope the War of Northern Aggression, States Rights AND Slavery was won by the Union, and Abe held us all together. God Bless him.

“Before the war, in speaking about our country, we said “The United States are” – plural. We saw ourselves as a union, a stitched-together collection of states, a “many” thing. After the war we then began to talk about America as a “one” thing, as a nation. And we began to say something that is still to this day ungrammatical; we say “The United States is…”

“… The war defined us. It made us who we are, for good and for ill. Everything that came before led up to it, and … everything since has been in some ways, however faint, a consequence of it … paradoxically, it’s the moment where we try to rip ourselves in two that we come to terms with the greatest sense of unity that we’ve ever had.”

The main reason the south lost the war was the employment of “total war” by the North. Particularly Abe Lincoln in the strain exemplified by Sheridan and Sherman. War waged explicitly against the civilian population to break the will of the southern people.

Proven by your post. Its true, the women did beg for the men to desert and come home to protect them from the rapists, thieves, and wanton destructors in Blue. Holomodor was exacted with Lenin-type efficiency. Leaving not only the whites, but also the blacks to starve to death in the wake of yankee righteousness.

You should be right proud of yourself, as this type of warfare had been outlawed by international agreement since ending the dark ages. Napoleon himself did not attack defenseless civilians, but Lincoln and his mercenary socialist hordes found no qualms in doing so. Blenker’ed was the term used to describe the experiance, coined after the constant rape and pillage of of civillians by General Louis Blenker. Do some research on Blenker, who his friends were, and what side of the revolutionary equation they were on in 1848 Germany. Can you find any such equivalent person in the southern military?

I will admit, it was an effective strategy. Hardly so noble, but effective. Who had more honor, the deserters going home to protect their families or the persecutors of their families? Tough question, easy answer.

      YepImaConservative,

I haven‘t read as much at Lew Rockwell as you’d hope. I have read quite alot at marxists . org. To any honest, critical reader who is well informed of the current state of affairs and the global socialist movement aflame in our own time, the historical evidence of the situation should be conclusive evidence in and of itself. To be quite honest, I did not so fully believe Lincoln’s treachery nor southern claims until correlating the past with the present. I resisted my current point of view for much longer than I’ve embraced it.

Once I embraced it and allowed myself to follow unmitigated truth, I found freedom. I also found a terrifying foreboding of what is to come. Our national history did not occur in a vacuum, world events shaped it in much the same fashion its being shaped now. Since “The Blaze” limits my words, I’ll summarize from past to present into the future:

European socialist revolutions in 1848-51 = Arab Spring and associated growing European unrest.
War Between the States = a new, real Civil War in America and global war.
Union Preserved / Reconstruction = One World Governance under Marxist control

The key to all this happening is the Lincoln mythology. Whether one understands their role in it or not, it is the uber-nationalist mindset that the marxists rely on to carry their agenda forward. Placing and ever-expanding number of people under an ever-shrinking amount of central governing bodies

It used to be, but knowing Illinois has squandered money like crazy, it doesn’t surprise me. I grew up about an hour’s drive from Springfield and all the history of that area. This is a disgrace and the sword no longer exists or will be found! Very sad but today people seem to have very little respect for history or the priceless items that made our history so important for our children to learn about our amazing country! Just disgusting!

    @LUKER

Please read this, it should open your mind:
    http://www.dailypaul.com/119311/do-states-have-a-right-to-secede

    Or I can quote Lincoln:
“Any people, anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better. This is a most valuable and most sacred right – a right which we hope and believe is to liberate the world. Nor is this right confined to cases in which the whole people of an existing government may choose to exercise it. Any portion of such people that can, may revolutionize, and make their own, of so many of the territory as they inhabit.”

    Again Lincoln:
“This country, with its institutions, belongs to the people who inhabit it. Whenever they shall grow weary of the existing Government, they can exercise their constitutional right of amending it or their revolutionary right to dismember or overthrow it.”

Navyvetgreg. The constitution provides for a legal and orderly way of severing the bonds of unionhood. However, when South Carolina seceeded from the Union, they fired on fort Sumpter. That was an act of war. Lincoln responded in the correct way when the United States is attacked.
He was correct in trying to (and finally succeding) keep the union together.
Would you really want a country dedicated to keeping a race of people in bondage still in existance on our southern border?

Do you remember a little quote from old Abe?

If I could end this war without freeing any slaves, I’d do that. If I could end this war by freeing some slaves and not others, I’d do that. And if I could end this war by freeing all the slaves, I’d do that.

Of course this is not a direct quote because I don’t want to take the time to look it up word for word, but that is very nearly his exact words as I remember reading them. Let no one tell you that the civil war was over slavery. If that were true, then all the slave in the north would have been released at the same time those in the south were. The war was over states’ rights and the ability of a state to secede from the union. While slavery is deplorable and I in no way condone it as a human, Libertarian, or Marine, it was not the reason for the war, and there is no reason to keep a state that wishes to relenquish its ties to the united states from doing so. If there were, we wouldn’t have independant Indian nations dotting this country from coast to coast or Amish settlements where no one pays taxes.

When, in 1861, South Carolina reasserted that it was a sovereign state, it was on firmer ground than Thomas Jefferson had been in 1776 when he drafted the Declaration of Independence proclaming that the colonies were sovereign states. In fact, they were not; they were British colonies under colonial charters. It was the “crown of Parliament” that was sovereign over the colonies. But the Declaration , the Continental Congress, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution all rested on Jefferson’s asseveration that the colonies were free and independent states, (which is why states, rather than a mass majority vote of all the people in all the states collectively, approved the Constitution). State sovereignty was a cornerstone of America’s political philosophy, and given these precedents, South Carolina’s Declaration of Independence was a much less radical step than he Declaration of Independence.

Lincoln was protecting Northern profits, plain and simple.

Lincoln did act as a Dictator… sending to troop to occupy New York and Maryland… suspended habius corpus… and used eminate domain to acquire passage for RailWays to support logistics for the military.

I have mixed feelings on the man. A lot of people follow him like a cult but fail to see he suspended habeas corpus, backed shermans killing of civilians (scorched earth policy), etc, etc, etc.
I find him fascinating and personally believe before he was assassinated he truly found God and saw the error of his ways.

NavyVetGreg may know alot more factual information about Lincoln that the rest of you sheep.

It certainly wasn’t the Confederacy who actively employed socialist revolutionaries in thier government nor military. People like Carl Shurz and August Willich. Home grown socialists like Charles A. Dana. Lincoln was awash in socialists to such a degree that Obama would look like a Neo-Con in comparison.

But, you haven’t been taught that – you’ve been taught to worship Lincoln – for the exact reasons our country is on the verge of Marx’s dream coming to full fruition. Its a sobering excercise to trace the fulfillment of the Communist Manifesto, and how many of those planks were installed by Lincoln and his immediate successors. The south knew exactly what and who it was fighting against.

When was the Lincoln memorial built? Who built it? When was this tomb built? Who built it? One answer, Socialist Progressives during the early progressive era of the late 19th Century.

Read some Karl Marx commentary on Lincoln and the war, written in europe at the time. Better yet, read the actual exchanges between Lincoln and Marx.

If most of you blind Lincolnite idiots don’t wake up, you’ll probably live to see the new Lincoln, Barak Obama, completely destroy our nation by the same means. If you Lincolnites had enough historical integrity about you to be objective, you’d see that history is perfectly repeating itself. Where’s the slavery now?

You can post all the Marxist BS you want, the facts are to the facts. If you ever learn how to read and think for yourself you will see that Lincoln had one of the most difficult jobs in a most difficult time in history and proved to be one of the greatest presidents we ever had. As for you, you can kiss my butt you moron.

States must Vote to join the Union… but there is no mechanism to UnJoin. Sorry!

      @ LukerW

Ever read a piece of paper called the Declaration of Independance? Read it.

      @ Uechi,

Did you know that the civil war was not fought over slavery? It was fought over taxes. The role of slavery was of little consequence due to the fact that the Congress had done nothing for a half century to stop the slave trade from shipping slaves from Africa to the US, which would have been their right and responsibility. The real reason for the war was the federal gov’t and its tariffs and taxes on goods shipped to and from the south. The south not having large scale manufacturing and having the only ports on the east coast that did not freeze over in winter meant heavy taxes on the southern states.

      UECHI,

You are the uninformed idiot in this conversation. A marxist is as a marxist does, so lets examine the language of both Marx and Lincoln.

Marx: quote to Lincoln upon re-election.
“…Abraham Lincoln, the single-minded son of the working class, to lead his country through the matchless struggle for the rescue of an enchained race and the reconstruction of a social world”

      Lincoln to Marx in reply:
“…maintaining insurgence as the cause of human nature, and they derive new encouragements to persevere from the testimony of the workingmen of Europe that the national attitude is favored with their enlightened approval and earnest sympathies.”

“Workingmen of Europe” were the first organized Communist organization (International Working Men’s Association) allowed to exist following the socialist revolutions of europe in 1848. Lincoln obviously thinks this perspective is “enlightened” and derives his “new encouragements” from these people. You might as well be listening to the love-fest between Trumka and Obama, which would be the modern equivalent in every respect imaginable.

NavyVet is obviously more informed than yourself. I’d encourage you to read history not written by actual socialists. Pick your favorite Lincolnite author, then research their backround – you’d be surprized.

      @SGTB
The Declaration of Independence, issued the Peer representitive of the Colonies, defined no relationship between the Colonies nor any Government Structure. Later, the Continental Congress represented the Peer States in Military matters, only. Then, the Articles of Confederation created a Continental Colonial Government… which was replaced by the Consitution, a Federal Government, and the First President.
