The stories of children — sometimes even toddlers — proclaiming that they are transgender seem to be on the rise. Over the weekend, The Washington Post featured a profile about a young girl named Kathryn who, at the age of two, began telling her parents that she was a boy. The child was inevitably diagnosed with gender identity disorder.
“Transitioning” during the childhood and teen years is a relatively new phenomenon in America. While it has not been uncommon for adults to change genders, it is extremely controversial to encourage — and to allow — children to act upon these feelings. The Post has more:
In the United States, children have been openly transitioning genders for probably less than a decade, said Jack Drescher, a New York psychiatrist who is a leader in the field of gender orientation. There is very little to go on, scientifically, to support that approach, and the very idea of labeling young children as transgender is shocking to many people.
But to others, it makes perfect sense.
“In children, gender solidifies at about 3 to 6,” explained Patrick Kelly, a psychiatrist with the division of child and adolescent psychiatry at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. [...]
The American Psychiatric Association has an official diagnosis for this: gender identity disorder in children.
Those who have it, according to the association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, experience “a persistent and intense distress about assigned sex, together with a desire to be (or insistence that one is) of the other sex. There is a persistent preoccupation with the dress and activities of the opposite sex and repudiation of the individual’s own sex.”
For Tyler, playing with normal toys that appeal to girls wasn’t really an option. As time went on, the child began to request trucks, swords and other related items. Additionally, she wanted short hair and petitioned to wear pants instead of dresses. Initially, her parents battled with the young child and attempted to explain her true gender.

Tyler (Image Credit: Washington Post)
When Kathryn’s mother, Jean, tried to sit down with her daughter to explain her anatomy, the child, then three, rejected the notion and reportedly asked her mother, “When did you change me?” So Jean began soaking up information about transgendered issues, as her battle to get Kathryn to wear girl’s clothing and to accept her female nature seemed fruitless.
But before telling her husband, Stephen, her suspicions about their daughter, Jean wanted to be 100 percent sure that what the couple was facing was a child with gender issues. Inevitably, she became convinced that this was, indeed, the reality. After spending a great deal of time researching the subject, the inquisitive mother finally approached Stephen and voiced her concerns.
Initially, her husband rejected her claims that it might be beneficial to allow Kathryn to call herself a boy. But after hearing his young daughter explain how unhappy she was dressing and acting like a female, he agreed to take her to a psychologist.
The doctor, to Stephen’s horror, diagnosed the child with gender dysphoria and recommended that Kathryn live her life out as a boy. While her father struggled with the notion, the child was apparently elated. For the purposes of the article — and the protect the identity of the family — the child, who now lives as a boy, is called Tyler (the name his parents would have given him had he originally been born a male).
While his parents claim that they will allow him to return to Kathryn if he ever chooses to do so, for now, Tyler is extremely content in his male role. In fact, the five-year-old is so insistent that he‘s a boy that he flatly rejects the notion that he’s transgendered.
“I’m not transgender,” he explains when he hears his mother use the word. “I. Am. A. Boy.”
Jean and Stephen aren’t alone in dealing with these issues. As the Post notes, ignoring these symptoms when they arise is apparently common and, some experts say, dangerous. Some children are so impacted by these issues that they end up depressed, suicidal or emotionally disenchanted.
But while some experts recommend allowing children to live out whichever gender they claim to be more in-tune with, others, like Kenneth Zucker, a child psychologist in Toronto, Canada, believe that it’s better not to categorize children. Rather than giving them a label when gender identity disorder arises, he recommends taking a neutral approach.
While research is still sparse, some experts maintain that the majority of children who face these issues actually return to their original gender; they essentially outgrow the problem. The Post continues:
In the U.S., it’s impossible to know how many children have gender identity problems because the condition usually goes unacknowledged by parents and pediatricians, said Edgardo Menvielle, who counsels transgender kids at Children’s National Medical Center in the District. About a dozen children from the area belong to his support group, and hundreds of families around the country are part of his online support network.
In the decade that Menvielle has been counseling such children, he estimates that about 80 percent end up switching back to what their biology tells them. The other 20 percent remain transgender into adulthood.

For those that do not understand, true wisdom only comes from God and thus doing the right thing can be difficult. As parents, we sometimes have to take the difficult path for the child and not the easy path that is quick with less fuss. We have to raise the child, not “give” the responsibility to someone else – that is wrong and does not work.

Posted on May 22, 2012 at 7:22amI didn’t know the term transgendered or even see a gay person until I was in late high school. And only then because my high school was on a college campus. This is the liberal plan…that‘s why they’re reading books to our pre-schoolers about having two mommies. I remember going through a phase where I tried to pee standing up, like a boy, but I outgrew it because no one told me I had gender issues and let me dress like a boy. The liberal agenda is to ruin the family so we all are test tube babies, and no one is created the natural way. Reminds me of the book/movie Logan’s Run.

My parents didn’t change her name or take her to counseling for gender problems. For years people thought I had two brothers by assumption. I would correct them she was my sister and SHE would promptly tell them, “I’m a BOY”. The older she got, the less she insisted. We were all relieved when she became a normal boy crazy teenager. She still has some tomboy in her, but she’s now a gorgeous, feminine mother of two rowdy boys! I think the parents are making a mistake by letting the child call the shots at this age. Like your sister, I got boy crazy around 10-11 and turned more towards the feminine side. As an adult, I still lean towards more traditionally masculine interests (politics, sports, etc). I am so thankful that my parents were normal and I grew up back in the ‘80’s when this transgender crap wasn’t even an idea yet. We need to let kids be kids, and not even give them the option of doing this. Otherwise there will be many messed up and confused young adults. Imagine the horror of a young woman of 15 turning boy crazy and more girly, like so many of us do, and trying to figure out what to do now because she’s been raised as a boy. Is she really a girl? Salvation is by faith, not by works. I do not care who you vote for, or what charity you do. If you call yourself “trans”, then you have some serious sin issues.
Read the first chapter of the book of Romans, it lays it all out for you.
the majority of people who support this manner of sick behavior are libs. they are the ones that support the sex changes, homosexuality, and all manner of other wicked behaviors.
Calling “sin” to be sin is not “judging”. Judging is trying to determine who is saved, or not saved.

Keep reading – And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?
This chapter is talking to the Jews, and how they are not supposed to judge, when they are commiting the same act that they are juding.
Judgment is something that believers are commanded to do in certain ways. We are not to judge people in the sense of condemning them. The church does have the responsibility to excommunicate people for sin. Any judgment that is done, is to be done righteously
Do not judge according to appearance but judge righteous judgment (John 7:24).
For what have I to do with judging those who are outside? Do you not judge those who are inside (1 Corinthians 5:12).
If you study, we are commanded to judge. We judge based on Bible truth, and we do not judge others for sins we are guilty of ourselves.

It is irrelevant to them that the convict was found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and sentenced to jail time. By liberal standards, illustrated by the left wing nut posting in this thread, it is against Bible teachings to ‘judge’ someone – even if they raped, robbed, and murdered. Therefore, it is not the rapist, robber or murderer that has sinned, it is you who have sinned for pointing out their sins… completely moronic, like most liberal logic.

Deuteronomy 22:5 deals with the issue of men dressing in women’s clothing and vice versa. In this passage God commands that a woman is not to wear that which pertains to a man and a man is not to wear that which pertains to a woman, for all that do so are an “abomination.” The Hebrew word translated “abomination” means “a disgusting thing, abominable, in the ritual sense (of unclean food, idols, mixed marriages), in the ethical sense of wickedness.” Therefore, this is not simply God addressing the fact that a woman might put on a man’s garment or vice versa. Also, this is not a command that a woman should not wear pants/slacks as some use this passage to teach. The meaning here is that this “cross-dressing” is done in order to deceive, or to present oneself as something that he/she is not. In other words, this speaks to a woman changing her dress and appearance so as to appear to be a man and a man changing his dress and appearance so as to appear to be a woman. This is the definition of a cross-dresser or a transvestite.
Once again, judging is when you try to determing who is saved, or unsaved. Calling a sin to be a sin is not judging.

Keep in mind at the time of the book was written togas and robes where worn by men and women not pants, the difference was in how the clothing was worn. Until the last century Boys where dressed in dresses and girls in pants. What clothing is truly being defined as for what gender? The section you point out had a time when a persons status was displayed by the fines robes and togas worn along with makeup on males. Females where forbidden to wear makeup. So when did this change it wasn’t when the bible was written. The change of what we see as clothing of genders came about through the dark ages, not the time of Christ more so the style would switch back and forth for centuries till the Victorian age.

Please sir I suggest you look hard at who you are. Cause each man has a sin to bear in their life and you sir are the worst kind of ignorant out there. I pray for your soul to find peace.

Check out that first sin in the book of Genesis. Satan did not show up to Eve, and talk her into drinking, gambling, doing drugs, homesexual acts, becoming transgender…… He just got her to be disobedient. Do you know how he did it? He started out by quoting God. “Hath God said” Satan is an expert at using God’s word in the wrong way, just like you, and many other wicked people. You may quote Bible, but you use it out of context, and you ignore the parts you do not agree with.
I do not wish your miserable and wicked lifestyle on you, or anyone else. I find it to be sad, and hope you can change.
There is only one sin that sends people to hell, and it is not homosexuality, transgender wickedness, murder, rape, stealling…… It is denying Jesus. You can be saved by grace just as easy any one else.
Bust out your yellow pages, and find a Independent, Fundamental Baptist Church in your area. Go meet with the pastor, and I assure you that you can get on a new path.

Posted on May 21, 2012 at 8:51pmLeave out? what did I leave out show me. Your the one quoting the bible leaving out things that you say don’t apply. I never once claimed I am not living in quote sin. Nor have I claimed the bible wrong you assume I do. You keep assuming I say things but you ignore the issue of this whole debate and make it souly about me and my faith with God. Look at yourself. Your casting judgement at me now, claiming I don’t know God. Please do yourself a favor learn who god is in your heart for yourself and quit telling others how he is in others hearts by your view. You can not tell a man about god when you yourself are unwilling to care for his children and that’s each and everyone, not just those you see in your own ways. Do you go around and tell Methodist, Catholics or Puritans about how god is in your view your way and not theirs. Or are you so blinded by your faith to look on to his work in the world in all ways of life. God created all with a plan for each, he created the lame and sick to teach us to be humble and respectful of his gift. He created you for your path and me for mine. But I assure you are not the one to direct my path of God, I have my way and you your’s. Respect that. If you cant understand the meaning of respect of others and their understanding of God then please do not fight for my country, this is a land of freedoms of choices and of hardships. Each will face decisions in their lives and each must live up to their decisions.

I quote Bible to back up what I am saying.
You can not be living a christian life as a trans person. Notice that after asking those without sin to cast the first stone, they all left, but the woman stayed. What did he tell her? Did he say I respect you, and go be yourself? No, he told her to go and sin no more. That means changing paths, and going a new direction. No one is completely free of sin, but once saved, people stop their wicked ways. Saved people do not continue in homosexuality, drunkenness, trans lifesyle, adultry….. they change

You shut your eyes from god’s world and cast stones at those you dub sinners, be they sinners or not I’m sure. You never respond to anything of the issue. For you the only thing about the issue is sin. So live in your ignorance. I will live in my sin and on my path of salvation and when time comes I will be judge as you will too. You fit the soul reason the people hate the right and live fully up to the stereotype as an arrogant bible thumping person who can not be bothered to educate themselves on matters other then cast a veil of the bible and only the bible as the only info you need. I will not keep feed your ignorance here. Please learn about the world outside the bible.

“and on my path of salvation” You way is the path to hell.
Matt 7 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it
John 14 6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me
Gal 1:8,9 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
9 As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.
Thanks so much for the compliments. To tell me that I base my thoughts, morality, decision on the Bible is about as good a compliment as I can receive.
As far as learing about the world outside the Bible –
Rom 12 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God

Posted on May 21, 2012 at 2:01pmIf it weren’t for a large, active homosexual contingent within the American Psychiatric Association (APA) much of this type of action would not exist. An MD/DO behind their names doesn’t change their political agenda. To be sure, there are examples where someone “knew they were the other gender” or “homosexual” from a young age. There is, also, no denying that as gender identity became increasingly important within the APA (because of the homosexual contingent) that a greater emphasis on trans-gendering was inevitable. And it has happened ………….. as if it is a panacea in all of these cases.
Report Post »Fast-forward to this case. A two year old begins to argue with their parents about gender? Huh? Was (s)he doing Differential Equations as well? As others have said, how obsessed were the parents with this subject and lead their child down this terrible path with the “help” of misinformed / politically motivated, pseudo-scientists.
Ask these same gender re-assigners: how much basic/clinical research is ongoing with the goal of ensuring individual gender identification MATCHES THEIR BIOLOGY? Or can someone explain what benefit there is to the mismatch? Easier to find a date Friday nights?

Posted on May 21, 2012 at 9:18amSorry, but I don’t believe it. Little kids will often make up things just to be silly. Kids will say “I am a dog.” and the parents might or might not play along with it. Now when a kid says “I am a boy or girl” which is the opposite of what they truly are, parents freak out and imagine much more than it really is. It’s the wimpification of parents. Most of the time kids will just outgrow it if the parents don’t make a big deal of it. Just because a kid prefers different toys doesn’t mean that they are gender-confused. Kids like to experiment. Kids will play “I’ll show you mine if you show me yours.” Just because the kids are the same sex, parents shouldn’t jump to the conclusion “well, these kids are gay.” Then when the kids turn into teenagers he/she remembers this event and thinks “I must be gay.” ENOUGH ALREADY!!!

Posted on May 21, 2012 at 4:36pmSo true. Kids are silly! Parents shouldn’t blow things out of proportion. Take what your kids say with a grain of salt, or maybe a whole canister. I’ve had boys play with dolls (usually they end up using the doll as a gun) and girls play with trucks, and both genders playing in the dirt and making messes. Kids are innocent. I’d use a psychologist as a last resort, especially considering that there is some serious money to be had in that field when it comes to Medicaid etc. and any government sponsored care.

Posted on May 21, 2012 at 9:11amWe get little in the way of details when it comes to stories like these, but it would seem that this child is not being “pushed” into this in any way. The parents attempted to explain how things were. The child insists on the male gender orientation. Perhaps by allowing this child to pursue a male orientation at this age, the parents may well be saving her (him?) from a lifetime of nasty gender dysphoria, a condition no one should have to deal with for years and years. I’ll hope for a good outcome, and save the narrow-minded responses for the rest of you.

Also, the question of are we exposing children to things that are not natural but yet making them seem like they are? I mean like homosexuality does not work in nature in humans for procreation, but that does not make a person bad. She can still play with boy things and wear spiderman t-shirts but she still needs to be treated like a girl. I was a total tomboy as a child and always thought that it would be more fun to be a boy, but I knew I was a girl. There was no confusion there. My parents let me play and get dirty but when it was time to go to church or somewhere nice I was expected to dress and look like a pretty little girl. You cannot let children make the rules. They need parents to set the rules and explain things they are confused about. This poor child will likely continue to be more confused about who she is and how she is treated. Psychobabble is ruining our children and has severely damaged our parenting!
