This Chart Showing Welfare Dependency Will Ruin Your Day

The Senate Budget Committee Republican staff under Ranking Member Jeff Sessions [R-AL] on Wednesday released this depressing chart:

This Chart Showing Welfare Dependency Will Ruin Your Day

Are you serious? Over 110,000,000* in the U.S. are currently receiving some form of government welfare?

“The federal government administers nearly 80 different overlapping federal means-tested welfare programs. Social Security and Medicare are not part of this category and not included in the figures in this chart,” a statement released on Wednesday by Sen. Sessions’ office reads.

“[S]ince 2000 Medicaid has increased from 34 million people to 54 million in 2011 and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, or food stamps) from 17 million to 45 million in 2011,” according to a statement released on Wednesday by Sen. Sessions’ office.

But here’s our favorite part: “Spending on food stamps alone is projected to reach nearly $800 billion over the next decade.”

Oh, $800 billion. Great, that’s, uh, swell.

The statement continues:

These figures include not only citizens, but non-citizens as well. For instance, USDA has acknowledged a formal partnership with Mexico to boost food stamp enrollment amongst non-citizens, migrant workers and foreign nationals.  In a ‘radio novela’ USDA even depicted an individual who resisted food stamp enrollment (saying her husband earned enough to take care of them) but who was successfully pressured into enrollment.

Yep. Non-citizens enrolled in the Mexico-U.S. food stamp program. That is all.

Follow Becket Adams (@BecketAdams) on Twitter

*From Sen. Sessions Office: “These figures do not include other means-tested benefits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit or the health insurance premium subsidies included in the President’s health care law.”

Picking on my president like this…. He LOVES the poor! Can you name one single president that’s done more to drag so many millions of people down to the getto level in just a few short years just so he can LOVE them? Be happy there with the food stamps, just remember that you didn’t print that.
Re-elect him so he can open the borders and add tens of millions more to the getto. It amazes me that people can’t see this for the SLAVERY it is.

The USDA is encouraging Americans to enroll for foodstamps through the SNAP programs. SNAP recommending that local SNAP offices throw parties and organize games, food, and enterainment to increase enrollement in the program. Over the past 4 years the cost of the program has risen from $39 billion to $78 billion. To put those figures in perspective, said Senator Jeff Sessions, ,”We will spend next year $40 billion on the federal highway program.”

Comrade Piehole I would be very pleased to tear your nonsense statement to shreds but I don’t think it would be worth the very little effort it would take to do so.
However, please note that both houses of congress went to the Democrat (Communist) Party in 2006 during that horrible time of economic trouble when unemployment was still under 5%. As our wonderful Progressives began to work their magic, things improved remarkably until by 2008, when Dear Leader was elected, things suddenly, shockingly, fell apart. Well, not really. Unemployment began to escalate from 2006 on as the economy began to slam into the Progressive created “housing crises” which was also part of the Progressive inspired “banking crises”.
So now that Dear Leader has pissed away almost 6 trillion dollars chasing the nightmare of Keynesian Economic theory, which by the way John Maynard Keynes himself didn’t believe in, and the country is about to fall of the cliff so happily predicted by noted Progressive author Francis Fox Piven and her now deceased husband, your wonderful moronic heroes are going to level the playing field and transform America into what their heart desires. We will be a third world country.
So, when the guns are shooting at you, just remember that you are partially to blame because you drank the Marxist cool aid.

Divide the Cost of Welfare 800 Billion a year by each Recipients $100 Million – $80,000 a year to pay one recipient $11,000 a year – US Citizens must think this is a good deal, becuase you never hear anyone talking about it.

When Reagan was running for President, America was spending $47,000 per year, to pay one Welfare recipient – Recipients recieved then around $7000 a year. Reagan said he was going to cut the waste and fraud in Welfare and raise what every reciepeint recieve – Reagan gain 70% of the Welfare recipeints that voted for him.

If Reagan was running today – it would be bye bye Obama. Reagan cut $47,000 cost to pay one reciepint down to $17,000 and GAVE WELFARE RECIPEINTS A RAISE. Reagan also gave Clinton a balance budget in Clinton’s first year in office.

I used to care, but this new forced “morality” of stealing from producers and giving to the lazy and addicted is destroying the country. Rarely does someone on welfare actually need it because they aren’t able to do anything to help themself…it has become a way of life. If a few good people have to starve to death to get rid of those who are content with stealing from me, well, that’s too bad but it happens. The world needs people like me who are willing to make the tough call. All these bleeding hearts are doing is trying to drag everyone to the same low level. The US GDP is $15 trillion per year. The food stamp expenditure of $80 billion per year is 0.5 % of our national economy. I think we can afford to spend 0.5% of our economy to give poor kids $5 a day for food.

We as a nation chased prosperity right up to the walls of socialism and said, Ummm? This doesn’t look so bad! Bring on the Unions and more benefits, more retired pay, taxes from everyone to pay for it and now we are going broke? What happens next is going to be very ugly. The buyers remorse will seem easy to stomach compared to the finger pointing as to who brought it all down. Many will say the banks, some will say the old White retired people needing so much healthcare, some will say the illegals, some will say the Black community who rely so much on government, some will say republicans or democrats. But in the end it will only be the irresponsible American government and its citizens who sat back so idle just believing their nation would never become what so many nations are and have become.

It couldn’t last forever but it could have been better managed and safe guarded for the next generation. Sorry kids! But we broke it and it ain’t getting fixed ever again. We don’t have another 100 years to figure out that we were duped and start changing back into what we all know can work. Knowledge will only be for certain people by that time as we will have regressed well back to lawlessness and freuds. I want to weep for this country but no tears will come because I know damn well we’ve done it to ourselves. The gravy train will soon be over people and I just hope you’ve got the smarts to see where we are and headed so as to prepare for that eventual out

      It’s all about equality.
If you can’t get the losers to perform and get jobs, then take it from those who work hard, and everything will finally become equal.
      But I digress.
I myself, am on Social Security Disability, and I hate the way they tell me, that it is a welfare program.
For over 40 years, I paid into this very system. Then, through no fault of my own, some insurance company decided that I should take advantage of it. Although I do see many many people, who are fully capable of earning a living, collecting on the sysem.
Right now, in order to get back, every cent that I paid in, I’d have to live to be, 105 years old.
If you pay into it, it’s not welfare!
Similarly, if you get interest on your money in a bank, is it welfare?

The point here is simple: WE CAN’T AFFORD IT ANYMORE. So, to argue that people who don’t produce should still get handouts, is to say that even as I die, I should spend my last breath helping those who won’t help themselves.

You seem to understand how a person can be so broke that they can’t even pay for food; what don‘t you get about a country being so broke that it can’t pay for everyone to sit around and do nothing?

And I spent 8 years in the Marine Corps to help pay for my education (“help” because I kept a job while completing my degree from Texas A&M). I’m proud I did it, but glad I’m out; no Marine of good conscience will continue to follow the orders of this tyrant for much longer. He is a domestic enemy of the people. Welfare needs to stop being CHECKS. We need to go to food banks, second hand clothes, and public housing that resembles a bunk house. Hand outs need to be for the needy not the lazy. The way you do that is make the hand out less appealing. My family has never taken a dime from government (we don’t even use the schools). We budget and if the money is not there, we don’t spend it. My sister‘s family gets all the assistance there is and she doesn’t give one thought to choices (she is on kid number 7). We were visiting once and she wanted to go to 7-11 for icecream, it was the end of the month and I said we don’t have money for icecream right now. So she treated, put those Ben and Jerry pints on her food stamp card! Illistrates what is wrong with the program doesn’t it.

      Hey Mr Piehole,
Dont you think that everyone has a responsibility for their own actions!? The crash of 2008 had alot to do with alot of things; like Alan Greenspans manipulation of the interest rates, or Barney Frank meddling with the housing policies, or possibly Clinton for the repeal of the Glass-Steagel act allowing the merge of investment and commercial banks that lay the groundwork for the worst available mortgages possible. And yes, Bush should take some blame too. But last, and not the least, you the people want something for nothing, taking no responsibility for your financial destitute. You may want to consider that out of the 50% of Americans that are taking food stamps today, all are not justified or required.

Its NOT FREE MONEY. People will eventually be forced to take responsibility for their actions.

Friedman said that school choice was one of the first hurdles to jump towards restoration of liberty. I tend to agree. If we have kids in high school who have no idea what a mortgage is, or how a central bank works, or the purpose of a federal reserve, (like me) then we are facing a hydra. If you lop off its head, another one will just grow back.

Truth, fiscal literacy, and early economic education is the fire needed to vanquish this multi headed beast.

We need economics classes as early as 5th grade.

      @Goat,

Be careful. Friedman also proposed an individual health insurance mandate and was an advocate of fiat currency and expansionary monetary policy.

He said some really cool things, and in total he was an inspiration. That being said, he may not have been the free-market champion that conservatives paint him to be.

      I prefer Claude Frédéric Bastiat.
      ———-
Now, legal plunder can be committed in an infinite number of ways. Thus we have an infinite number of plans for organizing it: tariffs, protection, benefits, subsidies, encouragements, progressive taxation, public schools, guaranteed jobs, guaranteed profits, minimum wages, a right to relief, a right to the tools of labor, free credit, and so on, and so on. All these plans as a whole—with their common aim of legal plunder—constitute socialism.

But how is this legal plunder to be identified? Quite simply. See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them, and gives it to other persons to whom it does not belong. See if the law benefits one citizen at the expense of another by doing what the citizen himself cannot do without committing a crime.

It is easy to understand why the law is used by the legislator to destroy in varying degrees among the rest of the people their personal independence by slavery, their liberty by oppression, and their property by plunder. This is done for the benefit of the person who makes the law, and in proportion to the power that he holds.

If you wish to prosper, let your customer prosper. When people have learned this lesson, everyone will seek his individual welfare in the general welfare. Then jealousies between man and man, city and city, province and province, nation and nation, will no longer trouble the world.

Ok, be honest. Let’s assume Romney wins in Nov. and let’s assume that the GOP wins house and senate. Given that, do you think that they will cut program funding? Will they change the qualification rules? Will they take any action directly to fix this issue? Sure, they’ll say their going to create jobs. Right, government creates jobs. Uh huh. Anyway, the power of the pen will be right in front of them and will they cut programs or funding?

We do have a recent datapoint. The 108th and 109th congressional sessions had GOP in power both houses and a Republican POTUS. Did they grow or contract government? Furthermore, is Romney more or less conservative than GWB based on his actual legislative record in MA?

I don’t think there is a plan B. I take issue with those on the right that are binary thinkers. 1/0…us/them…red/blue. History and data tells us that there isn’t much difference. Sure campaign commercials look different but actual performance in public service is roughly the same. The Bush years saw government grow with a GOP congress. Yet we think if we elect a liberal republican from MA and put him with a GOP congress led by McCain and Boehner that suddenly they are going to see the light? Of course not. Yet these folks will delude themselves to thinking it is actually getting better. It ain’t. The problem is waaaay too big and y’all are like rubes at a snake oil sales pitch. Let’s talk about gay marriage when the debt (unfunded liabilities) is 5 times the GDP of planet earth. Yeah!!!!

      Plan B?

      1. Wake the heck up and stop buying the BS of politicians and use your dang heads and read what people really do…not what they say.
      2. Prepare yourself and family for a really rough patch to come.
      3. Civil disobedience. Stop playing the stupid games and start demanding that your neighborhood police quit being the muscle for the govt.
      4. Go to church and get right with God.
      5. Bring it down. Shut it down…whatever. The sooner it crumbles the better off our children will be. We’re screwed but we did it to ourselves. Let’s save our souls and not deliver our kids into slavery.

      @Girthman,

As Plato pointed out in the Republic, that democracy fails when the majority can vote themselves into the coffers. Hence the whole point of the Republic was to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority. Anyways, his tipping point was that 51%.

Truth is, that even if we aren’t there now, we will be. Not you, but collectively…ask yourself; who has more babies welfare moms or working moms? Now, how do you think those babies in each instance are going to be raised? You think welfare mom is raising little libertarians and conservatives? Yeah, probably not. SO, even if we are the 51% today the writing is already on the wall.

      A. The financial problem is beyond “paying off”. Destruction and rebuilding of the system is the only alternative.
      B. We (conservatives, libertarians) are being massively outbred.

      @Girthman,

Relax dude, I’m not the bad guy here. Chart sucks. Yes, Obama has contributed to a massive amount of folks on the dole. We all agree. My point is that this isn’t an Obama problem. There were 94M people on the dole when he came in. So are we saying 94M is okay…that’s our limit. But, as soon as you go to 94,000,001 that’s it. You’re a communist failure? Yes, he is, but that’s beside the point. My point is that if we play this game of Red vs. Blue and Obama vs.Romney then we are missing the real issue. The Red team isn’t our friends. At least they haven’t been. The system is rotten to the core….every bit of it. If McCain had won would that chart have gone down from 94M? No, and you know it. Why? Because the whole freaking system is a mess. It is, in every sense, Hobbs’ Leviathan. It knows no purpose beyond expanding and there isn’t anything any politician can do other than make it expand faster (not slower…not an option). As soon as we get to a collective realization about this the sooner we can have a real conversation about how to not have our children be wage slaves and serfs.

We don’t have to pep talk ourselves into voting for a guy who signed gun legislation, gay marriage laws, increased taxes and cost of doing business on MA small businesses, and gave a state version of Obamacare to MA. Those are incongruent to being a conservative. Crap, they‘re almost Obama’esque. But here are people on this board carrying water for him….because he might be able to beat Obama. Roth the largest difference this time around is this simple fact…the nation is broke. Romney will have little choice but to cut back. The world economy is hanging by a thread right now…any significant blow to the system will cause it to crumble. I realize that growth figures show we are not in recession but that is only technically correct for if you take into account all relevant inidcators we are actually in recession in parts of the ecnomy, stagnant in other parts and very modest growth in the financial sector. That small growth is actually artificial in nature since it’s been propped up by the FED flooding the world marketplace with cheap US dollars the past 4 years….that chicken has to come home to roost at some point. Hyper inflation will set in if the FED continues buying it’s own debt and circulating even more US cirrency (printed out of thin air). The US dollar has lost 20% of it value during Obamas term…it could esily lose another 20% if Obama wins aother term…if that happens and interest rates are forced upward by the IMF the US debt will become unservicable overnight going from 240 billion today to over 1T (if the interest on the current rises to 5%_. Lets face the last time we had run away inflation was during the Carter admin…the interest rates back then were above 20%. 20% of 16T is 3.2T….our GDP is roughly 1.5 to 1.7T (with better economy)….the writing is on the wall for all to see. I imagine even the GOP realizes the game is up.

Just a correction or two…GDP is 14 to 15 T while FED take is 1.4- 1.6T in taxes per yr…National debt now equals 100% of GDP. Needless to say if interest in debt jumps to just 5% radical changes in FED spending and taxation wull have to take place overnight. Taxes cannot be dramatically increased for obvious reasons so the only alternative is drastic feep cuts across the board. Thew miliatry have already born the brunt of cuts…the rest of Gov’t has to be radically reformed and quickly…low interesat rates will not last forever nor can they.

The FED is sitting on 6T in newly printed currency but the main drawback to adding to what is already out there is the spectre of hyper inflation. One of the pre conditions to run away inflation is monetizing your own debt, something the FED and this afmin 3 years ago said they would never allow or do…..well that ship has sailed bigtime. Spain recently had a bond issue that went very badly….we are fast approaching the time when US treasuries and bonfs will be looked at with simialr disdain with little or no buyers willing to take the risk. China is already leveraged to the max with US treasuries….it’s no secret that China and Russia are pushing for a new rserve world currency since they afraid that they might be paid back with nearly worthless US paper (if hyper inflation sets in). If the US dollar is dropped in the next 2 years the US and the rest of the West will be in a world of hurt never before seen by the nation.

Go ahead and count the ones on SS, medicare, some form of farm welfare subsidy, some form of jobs program like the military, and any other form of government worker, or government sub-contractor. It all adds up to where I think I am the only one working free of government ties to pay for all you parasitic leeches. Tell your wife and kids they’re welcome.

Are you saying that because I am in the military, I count as suckling on the welfare teet?

Listen here, douchebag, I didn’t get blown up 9 times, kill 6 dirtbags, and nearly get my head blown off in over 20 engagements to be regarded as a welfare junky. Technically, I qualify for food stamps and for Social Security Disability, but I don’t take it because I have a sense of pride, honor, and work ethic. Up yours.

I feel you… I am 30 years old, and I have never once taken ANY form of government assistance (although lately I feel like kinda a fool since everyone else is living good off of our money, so why not us??) and have no intention to ever do so…

It makes me sick that there are people out there that CAN work, and simply chose not to since they can’t find a job they like… Lets all be honest.. There are plenty of jobs out there.. Its just that they are not glamorous or high paying, but you know what, I would rather do those jobs than sap off of someone else….

Knowing that 1/3 of our country is receiving handouts (not wellfare… Lets call it what it is…) and I’d say another 1/3 doesn’t qualify (do to age or having too much money) means that its gotta be about 50% of eligible people are on Hand-outs…. Disgusting..

If you are not mentally or physically retarded, or severely injured you do not belong on hand-out programs… You just need to get off of your lazy butt and earn your way…. I would never say get rid of those programs (since some people truly NEED them..) but most people (maybe 3/4ths of the people on them) don’t need them…

That is rude, the people in reference here are the ones NOT and I repeat for you NOT working or even trying to work. Never go and disrespect our military or their families.

Thank You President Nobama. We could not have done it without you and Nancy Plelousy, and Wooden head Harry Reid. Now if you are re-elected, a shudder just went down my spine, everyone one but Caucasians will be on welfare. I have been reading for years about how people are unhappy with the government or the Congress or the President, never, never have I read so many people calling for the Military to do something. I am scared down to the bone. If Nobama is re elected this country in done. We will cease to exist. Yahweh please do not abandon us in this our greatest need.

So what if Obama pays for the 11M additions on his watch. Who’s responsible for the 94M that were there before?

So, the Dems spent 60 years getting to 94 million and Obama added 12 million in only 3 years! He’s SuperDem! Re-elect him and it will be 300,000,000 by 2016…and still Bush’s fault…

      @T38,

Don‘t pee on my leg and tell me it’s raining. This is not a GOP vs. DNC game. If you believe that then you are fooling yourself.

For example, even Reagan expanded entitlements. Here’s his speech about it and what he had signed into law.

Of course we know about GWB. Just for starters there is Medicare part D and all the GOP who voted for that.

The GOP has been supporters of Farm Subsidies as well as forms of corporate welfare.

On the positive side of the ledger, they did pass welfare reform in 1996 (PRWORA) to send the responsibility back to the states, which was good.

But then again, one of the sponsors of the food stamp act of 1964 was a republican from GA (Aiken). Obviously, there were GOP votes for this law as well.
