This Graph Says an Awful Lot About the So-Called ‘Recovery’

Lately, we’ve been hearing a lot about “the recovery” and lot of arguing over who’s to blame for its supposed slowdown. But before we got too bogged down in who’s responsible for retarding economic growth, maybe we should first look at the data.

Without one word of explanation, Harvard University econ professor Greg Mankiw posted the following graph to his blog:

This Graph Says an Awful Lot About the So Called RecoverySource: Bureau of Labor Statistics

As you can see, the shaded area indicates the recession and everything to the right of that is the so-called “recovery.”

Huh.

So, was this what the White House meant when it said we’re moving in the right direction or should we just not read too much into the data?

Blame Bush for the slight rise before 2008..lol. We are going in the right direction alright…most voters are moving to the right, laughing at those on the left like Debbie Washedout and Obama. A few democrats are waking up too that I’ve talked to.

The cause for the destruction of prosperity is sin, a Christian nation corrupted by sin will be judged.
Christians have failed to be salt and light. The solution is to get on your knees individually and as a nation and repent. God wants to forgive. God wants to bless. America has chosen to live for satan and vote in vile evil wicked leaders. Don’t be discourage Christian. Your home is in heaven. This is just a strange land and foreign country for you and I. We are headed to paradise. The graph is a graph showing God’s judgement, a inverse graph of sin in America, and a graph of the beginning of the end. Christians need to be looking up and be prepared. Jesus Christ will be coming.

It’s even more telling to use his data (available at research.stlouisfed.org) to look at this and other recessions back as far as 1948. We’ve not only flat lined, but, as everyone already knew, this so-called recovery has been the most tepid in at least 4 decades.
In the best of all possible worlds, data like this should define the results of the next election.

I hope England gives it back to us. But he has no respect for the US so why would he respect the desk of William Henry Harrison? Why would he respect the bust of Churchill. He migh as well set an ash try on the desk and leave it with cigarette burns. He might as well of thrown the Churchill bust in the landfill.

To really understand the chart, you need to look back to 2001. Under Bush, there was steady growth, until the democrats took over, and then within 2 years they had wiped out over 6 years of growth, add the 3 years of Obama, the democrats have taken a time of great growth for America and turned it into an 11 year period of no growth.

These boards are hilarious to read for a Brit like me. There is so much hatred and racism on here that the website should be ashamed. America has a growing reputation for being dumb, and these boards go out of the way to confirm it.

America isn’t great anymore, and that hasn’t happened since Obama was made president, the wealth disparity continues to grow, your healthcare is for rich people only, and tax cuts for the rich and wars have ruined your way of life, yet you still want to let right wingers continue.

I hope you have a republican for the next 20 years, so you can grow out of your trickle down dogma, and get back to the ideals of your constitution. Conservatism is a religion, and sticks to it’s belief in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

What an absolutely insane site this is. Sorry for interrupting, I’ll let you guys get back to your hatred and racism.

How about the 31k Marylanders who have left their State for greener pasteurs? I wonder how many of them were rich Dems wanting to hold onto their earnings. Maybe now they get Obama. Maybe now they can see what exactly he meant by socalled HOPE and CHANGE.

His policies are tearing this country apart. We should have been well past the 08 crash by now! They made it worse by papering over it. The only blame I give to Bush is that he wanted the stupid bailout money and went along with it instead of saying no. I know why he did it, because he knew that the crash would happen right on his watch and did not want to literally hand over the country in that state in which he surely would be blamed for it which he was anyways in the end. He took actions to kick the can down the road and hopefully far enough that it would not appear to be his fault. I’m sure he factored into his logic that once the Dems got control of the economy that they would wreck it anyways and this would give him more distance….neither was the case….he should have trusted God to deliver on this monumental decision to bailout the country. Now we all must pay for this decision and now the decisions of Dear Leader who felt he had breathing room to further destroy us with debt and then blame it on Bush.

They tell us to not let what happen to their country happen here!

HUEY6367, [Thanks for your service] It hadn’t occurred to me that Obama might leave cigarette burns all over the White House furniture, carpets, and flooring. Indeed, I can actually imagine him snuffing out his butts on portraits of presidents with whom he disagree, especially that of Bush the Second. I hope someone does a thorough job of checking the unit for damage. God knows I’ve had plenty of landlords give me the “white glove” treatment in an effort to keep the security deposit.

SWAMPY, Bush could have used his veto more often with that Democratic Congress. I can’t remember how many times I sat there listening to the crap the Democrats were pulling and screaming, “Use your freakin’ veto, Bush! Where’s your veto pen? Just say, ‘No!’” I wrote a lot of letters to Bush & Company, all to no avail. It occurs to me that by giving in to the Democrats perhaps Bush was hoping for cooperation on the war front.

Congress and Obama are preparing to flood the government with legislation and regulation during the “lame duck” session after November 6th.
Debt Ceiling increasing (mentality of “total collapse” if we do nothing being exploited)
Tax Cut extensions (with restrictions and concessions by the GOP to Obama – he is blackmailing them)
and a host of other Progressive-Marxist policies and Federal regulations…
we need to toss out the Marxists in both parties in Nov…..and hopefully have men and women with spines that will IMMEDIATELY overturn all the “lame duck” crap….

as for Romney’s polling numbers….remember…those registered to vote are split into thirds right now.. Independents are a little more than 1/3 of the population… Rep and Dem a little less…but some of those Indies are actually Socialists, Marxists, Communists, Greens….
Most of the undecided’s are probably libertarian minded people who are unsure of Romney so we are getting this 45-45 split with Obama-Romney making it look like Mitt isn’t doing well..Obama is maxed out in the polls…he already has his 45% that are going to vote for him…
hopefully the 10% of the Indies that are almost completely libertarians will get their head out of their ARSES and go with the guy that gives them 70% of what they want instead of the man that gives them 30% and then will take that from them once he is reelected…

This graph is misleading. The EMRATIO is apparently the percent of the adult population who is current employed. It usually runs around 60, or 60% of the adult population is supporting all the retired, the military, those in prisons, those who are disable and unable to work. This graph runs between a high of 63% and a low of 59%, both of them are a little above and a little below the normal. By the way, Mankiw’s students walked out because he was presenting an unbalanced, and too based on Free Markets to help them undertand basic economic models. They specifically question the heavy emphasis on Adam Smith in the modern world.

Why exactly is the graph misleading? My understanding is that it is a “representation” of the number of mouths to feed as compared to the number of workers. Nothing more really. The ratio is increasing so each worker has more mouths to feed. It’s how the progressives support more taxes for programs, housing etc.

They want a totalitarian form of government, the self-proclaimed, enlightened elite most of whom have never had a real job wants us to be lock step with them, give up hope, give up individualism, give up any freedoms we were founded upon. This is about imposing their ideology first and foremost. They want us to become a non-thinking collective walking in lock step.

In Obummer eyes we are moving in the right direction. This was what he was taking about CHANGE and if I can‘t do it in one term then the people will catch on and I won’t get a second term. Obummer has done so much damage it will take years to fix what he destroyed in 3 1/2 years If it can be repaired at all. Love/Pray

Sadly we must pray for “OUR ENEMIES”!! They just happen to be within. Reminds me of Krushev coming to the U.N.”-american” and ranting about how he would sink this Nation without firing a shot by destroying it from within. Seems almost prophetic. Jeeeezz I HATE to say that!

The repairs of Obama’s damage will be especially difficult because the usurper illegally placed two far-left Judges on the SCOTUS. Now with Roberts voting as a liberal there is a liberal majority. If Obama wins a second term the SCOTUS is totally his. If he loses then perhaps Roberts will return to being, sort of, a Conservative.

While I understand that being a Constitutionally required natural born citizen does bot absolutely mean allegiance to only America, Obama is overwhelming empirical evidence of why the founders of America included the requirement for president and commander-in-chief.

Actually, there has been an informal freeze of Federal hiring. Unlike Reagan and other past Presidents, the rate of Federal hiring has been low and may have slowed the recovery because Federal jobs pay about the average income for the country and they have benefits. Oh, and we’ve had a pay freeze since 2010. And no, the average Federal employee does not make $150.000 a year. The average Federal employee is somewhere between a GS 09-GS 11, we make about $50,000, average income for the country.

Sickening to think poor Rose will wither on the vine without her 50k a year ane mucho bennies for being a professional slacker and malingerer. That Rose is where we have issues. If you aren’t on the border or in uniform, you are not needed. Unless of course you are building infrastructure-that would be kosher. Down with public unions and cut 2/3 of bloated fed empoyees and DC would once again be a place to take the kids.

I maintain the big money stopped flowing when the reality of McCain hit in 2008. The country realized what was imminent…40% drop in wealth for the average household, regulations, ACA, class warfare, hangover from Dodd Frank and the housing act of 1999 (sub-prime). A psychological lapse in confidence…

Right now we are faced with wicked vile leaders who have brought God’s judgement to Amierica. R. Paul who most dispise is the only moral candidate running. O’ well. I believe Romney is definitely a moral candidate. You may not agree with Mormonism but it is a straight-laced and strict religion to its followers. I’m not Mormon, though I had an aunt I dearly loved who was, and I respected her and her family greatly. As I do Mitt Romney. Your Ron Paul is not the only God-fearing, God-obeying candidate. He‘s more like the candidate who isn’t, since he withdrew from the race. You’re better off supporting one candidate that the majority of Obama dissenters support and help to guarantee a win for Romney. A vote for Paul is a vote, in the end, for Obama, due to the way the Electoral College will weigh the votes.

McDave – We criticize Ron Paul groupies because you are idiots. Observe: “Some choice,a socialist or a communist…I am still hoping for a good candidate on the independent ticket…” <— This is the crap you idiots say all the time and it is beyond stupid. You are trying to be ideologically pure while you bizarrely throw your vote away because you are too lazy and stupid too see the glaring fact that we have the choice for, in many important ways, diametrically opposed candidates. On one hand we have an anti-American and on the other we have a pro-American. We have a backstabbing communist interloper with a biography based on pure fantasy (Obama) and in stark contrast we have a Mormon, Capitalist, who regardless of his policies in Massachusetts built an business empire. Ron Paul IDIOTS are dumber than ********. You know full and well that you are doing nothing less than burning the only chance we have to salvage the United States — something that is worth dying for — your vote you are choosing to throw it away for nothing. I have zero respect for you and I never will. In fact I despise you. All of you. o_o

MCDAVE It does get old hearing the idiots non stop attacks and an example is the moron below your post. They say we’re idiots for supporting the only candidate who adheres strictly to the constitution, well sign me up for that,I’ll wear it as a badge of honor.

Romney is a crony capitalist who‘ll simply perpetuate the welfare warfare state but if we try to explain that to so called conservatives their usual retort is you’re an idiot or a Paulbot, that’s quite a rebuttal of our argument I must say.I’ve been a republican all my life as well but I believe we have a one party system now,I call it the big government party and Barry will make it much worse if he‘s reelected and Romney won’t be able to reduce the size of the beast if he wins since he’s a crony capitalist.

M problem with Ron Paul is two fold. The fact he wants to pull all of our troops home which has been tried and did not work it brought us WWII. The other thing is the fact in all his years in congress he has never written a bill that has passed. If he can not get his fellow congressman to vote with him now how could he as president? It is a illogical folly to think he could accomplish anything.
