‘This Is Disgrace Season’: Krauthammer Slams Harry Reid for ‘Hypocrisy,‘ ’McCarthyite Tactic’

Charles Krauthammer took the gloves off Monday night in describing Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid‘s recent attempts to force Mitt Romney’s hand on tax returns. Speaking in tones of simultaneous outrage and disgust, Krauthammer recited a charge against Reid that was uncharacteristically forceful and visceral, even given Krauthammer’s usual, barely concealed, dripping disdain for the political machinations of the Left.
“This isn’t silly season, this is disgrace season,” Krauthammer said. “The hypocrisy of Democrats on this! You remember, it’s Democrats and liberals in the media who take endless pride in having opposed McCarthyism. The essence of McCarthyism is to use a high place – high office – to make innuendo, unsubstantiated charges, and then destroy other people by means of doing that.”
This, according to Krauthammer, is exactly what Harry Reid has been doing. Watch him explain his reasoning below:

Posted on August 7, 2012 at 2:01amI’m struck by the fact that Reid would cite an anonymous “investor” at Bain to suggest that Romney hadn’t paid taxes in 10 years. Since when would an “investor” in ANY company know ANYTHING about the taxes paid by officers of that company? They wouldn’t! I’ve been thinking this for days, and Andrew Wilkow mentioned it on Real News this evening. NO investor would have the slightest idea what taxes were paid by the officers of that company. Reid is symptom of the sickness that is progressivism. He is a disgrace to our country!

Go to a sit in at your local Starbucks and you can all hold hands. The majority of us on this site love our country. After nearly four years of this liar in chief, it blows my mind people still support this hope and change. We need to gather at the polls people like our lives depend on it. Mark Levin said on his radio show today he believes Seiu and all the union thugs will bus illegals into undecided states who will try to vote because they know ID won’t be challenged. Ohio is our biggest threat. Not to mention our military overseas and the recent lawsuit just introduced that allows our guys serving a small window for write-in ballots. If you listen to Axelrods logic concerning this lawsuit…makes absolutely no sense. Talk about moronic.

Then in the run off, I got it stamped again, verified on the list, signed the list, got my ballot and had the back of the ballot verified by a 3rd person. I said I liked them stamping and she said I‘d be amazed at how many people don’t want their card stamped. I said maybe it’s because they want to vote twice. She said the computer would kick them out if they voted twice. Now, if we can fix registration.

Of course you realize that Democrats are enormous liars and hypocrites. This is just one example. And by the way, McCarthy was correct in his accusations about certain people being communists as they were in fact communists. Thus he didn’t use high place to make unsubstantiated charges, they were totally substantiated.

Posted on August 7, 2012 at 12:06amMcCarthy had a list of 57 ‘known security risks’ (communists and fellow travelers) that Truman’s own commission had identified (and in fact Truman’s commission named many more than 57). McCarthy couldn’t name them because it was CLASSIFIED INFORMATION (and therefore against the law to disclose). No one can name one person that McCarthy ever accused of being a communist that was not a communist. The ‘anti anti-communist‘ movement in this country has been one of the most horrific movements in this country’s history. It is still going strong today.

Posted on August 7, 2012 at 9:43amWell it seems that you guys are mainly right. I am, however, relieved to see that Oppenheimer was vindicated. McCarthy himself allowed that not all those he named might be guilty, but, in the cases that I picked to look at, he was right – Oppenheimer excepted.
I have changed my perception of McCarthy considerably. I was unable to look into all of those that he accused (I need to get some sleep soon) but I was astonished to read the VENONA papers (not in entirety, just cherry-picking).
They show that Soviet-controlled American communists reached right up into the White House. Not only that but the fledgling United Nations as well, which explains a lot.
McCarthy’s perceived reputation was clearly brought about by his enemies – which were legion – and it continues to this day. If this partisan mudslinging is ignored, he had an illustrious life.
Almost every day I bless the internet, as we all should, for allowing us to quickly and relatively easily do our own reaserch on these matters. It is harder for the skilled spin-meisters to pull the wool over our eyes than it once was.
Thanks, guys, for pulling me up on that.

Posted on August 8, 2012 at 3:50pmWirewizard is correct that McCarthy didn’t list Chaplin or Oppenheimer. McCarthy was chairman of the Senate Committee on Government Affairs, and of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. He conducted oversight hearings on enforcement of the Truman Loyalty Order, which covered only federal officials. Since Chaplin wasn’t a federal official, McCarthy had nothing to do with his case.
Chaplin came out of the closet as a “Comrade,” in his words, during World War II, when the Soviet Union was one of the Allies (after the colapse of the Hitler-Stalin pact). After the House Committee on Un-American Activities tracked Comintern agent Gerhart Eisler to Hollywood and began investigating there, Chaplin left the US, moving to Switzerland to avoid uncomfortable questions.
Oppenheimer actually was a Communist. See “Spies: The Rise and Fall of the KGB in America,” by John Earl Haynes, Harvey Klehr and Alexander Vassiliev, or see Blacklisted by History by M. Stanton Evans. Glenn Beck had him on his FNC show to talk about the book when it came out.

Posted on August 8, 2012 at 4:02pmOppenheimer was investigated by HUAC in 1943. A decade later, when Oppenheimer was chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission’s General Advisory Committee on Science, McCarthy asked Hoover if the FBI had any objections to calling Oppenheimer as a witness at a PSI hearing. Hoover said no, and informed the Justice Department, which informed Eisenhower. To head off McCarthy, Ike told AEC Commissioner Lewis Strauss not to renew Oppenheimer’s “Q clearance” until the AEC’s Personnel Security Board held hearings on the matter. It was the PSB that denied Oppenheimer his clearance. Although McCarthy wasn’t directly involved, it was the threat of a McCarthy hearing that finally caused action in his case.
