This Is Glenn Beck’s Passionate Defense of Hank Williams Jr.

There’s been quite the controversy brewing over what Hank Williams Jr. said on Fox on Monday. And now Glenn Beck is weighing in. And he’s not happy.

As we covered yesterday, Williams caused quite the kerfuffle when he mentioned “Hitler” while describing why he thought it was odd that Republican House Speaker John Boehner had golfed with Barack Obama. According to him (video here), “It would be like Hitler playing golf with Netanyahu, OK?”

That led Fox to immediately denounce his comments, others to immediately accuse him of comparing Obama to Hitler, and ESPN to yank his famous “Monday Night Football” jingle. And now it’s led to Beck lashing out at those who lashed out at Williams. Why? Because, as Beck explains, Williams wasn’t making a comparison, he was using an analogy to describe how odd the idea of Boehner and Obama playing is.

In typical Beck fashion, he used a heavy dose of comedy and satire to criticize ESPN and Williams’s critics. Case in point? He banned his own opening song for the much more sublime, “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Around the Old Oak Tree.”

“I would just like to say, for anyone who’s ever taken the SAT…anyone who’s ever taken a test in school, knows exactly what an analogy is,” Beck said. “And he’s not comparing Adolf Hitler and Barack Obama here. He’s not. He’s not. That’s not what that means and anybody who has any kind of education– my grandfather would have been able to spot this and he finished the fourth grade.”

After listening to the audio again, Beck got passionate:

“Now what does that mean, exactly? They’re opposites golfing! Hitler would not golf with Netanyahu, and Netanyahu wouldn’t have golfed with Hitler. Why? Because they’re polar opposites! So what he’s saying here is, Boehner was supposed to be a polar opposite to Barack Obama, but they get together to play golf. Which makes total sense because that‘s why he says he’s not for any of the GOP, because they’ve betrayed, they’re not polar opposites, that‘s what he’s saying here. But no, the geniuses at ABC [which owns ESPN] decide they‘re going to pull the ’Monday Night Football‘ theme because apparently you can’t say ‘Hitler.’ … I thought we got over that in the 1960s!”

And then he went on to play “Springtime for Hitler and Germany” from the Mel Brooks classic musical, “The Producers.”

“There’s not a single adult in the media anymore,” he concluded.

You can watch the segment below:

Radio legend Don Imus said (via Mediaite) Tuesday he thought “Fox and Friends” was “throwing [Williams] right under the bus:”

I have to agree with Glenn on this. He wasn’t comparing Obama to Hitler, he was giving an example of two people who are so diametrically opposed that you just can’t see them enjoying any social activities together. I think fox news would have done better to simply ask him if he was trying to compare Obama to Hitler. I think he would have made it clear at that point what he meant.

First of all, he could have picked any two opposites, he picked a pair where one is good and the other is totally evil. I don’t think it was an accident. Second of all they’re not supposed to be polar opposites. Getting mad about the one time they worked together, putting the good of the country ahead of pleasing their parties, instead of the many times they didn’t, is crazy.

      Here’s Hank Jr. passionate apology:

“I have always been very passionate about politics and sports and this time it got the best or worst of me,” the country singer said in a statement.

“The thought of the leaders of both parties jukin’ [sic] and high fiven’ [sic] on a golf course, while so many families are struggling to get by, simply made me boil over and make a dumb statement, and I am very sorry if it offended anyone. I would like to thank all my supporters. This was not written by some publicist,” Williams wrote.

What Hank Jr. said doesn’t bother or surprise me.

It’s typical of the red team neocons vs the blue team socialists extreme insult contest.

The irony of it is that while the two teams consider themselves polar opposites the truth is they are both really big government progressives. This includes team captains like Boehner and Obama.

The red team neocons who wear a big “R” on their chests are all for big government through a warfare state, and the blue team socialists, with a big “D” on their chests are for big government through a welfare state. That‘s really the only difference and it’s really not a difference.

These two teams (like crips and bloods) are actually more alike than different. They like to call each other names and show their loyalty to the team by who hates the opponent most. It’s just for show. Both sides grow the federal government when they hold the reins.

As long as we participate in their ridiculous game. we are always the losers.

Ron Paul doesn’t play that nonsense. He knows that both teams are spending the country into oblivion and he wants to end the big government game on both the welfare and the warfare sides.

Beck is right on this one. The simple proof is that in talking about Boehner and Obama, he always mentioned Boehner first. In the analogy, he mentioned Hitler first then Netanyahu. Analogy, pure and simple. Only a moron would consider Obama to be Netanyahu in any comparison. The example is about polar opposites, not Boehner being Hitler. Hitler was a Socialist – that’s why Gretchen considered Obama to be the first, after he’d been second throughout Jr.’s commentary. FOX reacted poorly. ESPN reacted as would be expected … fire the conservative for making an educated analysis and analogy.

But I do love Glenn Beck. If he didn’t exist the left would have to invent him – a living, breathing parody of the right. Oh by the way, since you’re paying money to him, you’ve probably heard; Beck has “verified” information, that he doesn’t know is credible, although he says he says it’s from credible sources, that next week there is going to be “an attack on Wall Street.” He recommends that you make sure you have some cash on hand, and check your stock of food. He doesn’t mention water, but Billy you need at least a gallon/day/person. The entire economy might collapse due to this communist attack!

For sure, I’m going to the grocery store this weekend in advance of the attack to the very heart of our economic system! Why isn’t this reported in the main stream media!!!

I wasn’t bothered by Hank Williams Jr.’s comments at all. I understood what he was trying to say. I too was bothered by the fact that Obama played golf with Speaker Boehner. It just didn’t sit well with me when it took place. Hank was showing just how completely opposite Obama and Boehner are, and how absolutely diametrically opposed Hitler and Netanyahu would be as well. When I think of Obama, I think of the communists, socialists, and marxists he has surrounded himself with and who he seems to prefer, and the fact that he worked very hard at destroying our Country. Benjamin Netanyahu is a saint compared to Obama. Netanyahu is also a saint compared to Hitler.

mils: In responding to your comment that Fox is going down hill fast…In reading an article on the internet on “fromthetrenchesworldreport.com” I came across an account of an attendee of the Bilderberg Group which was held in Switzerland in June of this year, and he/she told how this group is not happy with Rupert Murdoch and his coverage of globalization and of Bilderberg, although I have never heard any mention of the Bilderberg’s on Fox News. Perhaps Fox is getting pressure to become less fair and balanced!? Appears that Bilderberg’s like to work their One World Order schemes in the shadows, and don’t want anyone to expose them. If anyone is an expert on comparing President Obama to Hilter, Beck is. A few gems: “In any case, with nearly every presidential proposal, Beck and his researchers seem to run for the World War II books to skim for similarities. Hence the bailout of the auto industry was similar to “the early days of Adolf Hitler” when citizens “were very happy to line up for help there as well” (4/1/09), and after the president called for an expansion of programs like Peace Corps and Americorps, Beck declared (8/27/09), “This is what Hitler did with the SS.” Read more here!

      http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=4022

In any case, this has nothing to do about “PC:” which so many of you would love to believe. This has to do with ESPN trying to make a buck, and not tarnishing their brand by associating with somebody who make remarks that offend most people. That’s why Glenn lost all his advertisers (nothing to do with PC) and one reason he lost his TV show. ESPN doesn’t want to start losing adverstisers or associate their brand with Hank, which will turn off more people that it gains.

Hi Tein. I firmly believe in capitalism, and this is capitalism at work here, although you are free to believe that Soros is secretly behind the scenes telling ESPN what to do or not do if you choose. You are equally free to believe that Beck lost all of his advertisors because of Soros or Obama or whomever, rather than believe that was a case of the free market at work, with advertisers disassociating themselves from Beck rather than lose business by associating their company with his inflammatory remarks. It’s just business as they say. Not a conspiracy.

ESPN must have ask themselves whether is was worth it to have Hank Jr. on MNF given his controversial statements. People here are saying it was some PC thing, but, no, they simply didn’t want to lose viewers or advertisers. You may not be offended by his or Beck’s Nazi references, but ESPN and Beck’s advertisors before realized most people would be.

The last thing Hank Williams Jr needs is a delusional fear monger like Beck on his side. Beck is a mean-spirited jerk anyway. He has yet to apologize for ridiculing a poor woman on national radio last summer along with his sycophants Stu, Pat and quarter ton Jeffy.

    Hmm.

    1) Hank Williams sings the overwhelmingly popular theme song for an ESPN flagship product
    2) Hank Williams says something no worse than a number of ESPN employees publicly said about George W. Bush
    3) ESPN is owned by ABC
    4) ABC is owned by Disney
    5) Disney has huge amounts of money invested in lobbying before the FCC, Congress, and other federal agencies
    6) Obama controls most of the organizations Disney has lobbied against
    7) ESPN fires Hank Williams while not doing the same for similar, anti-Right commentators in the past

Yup, ESPN is definitely standing for principle here…the same principle used by prostitutes when they decide on accepting a ‘client’

    Pathetic ESPN, simply pathetic.

I’m of the opinion that ESPN has been around too long and evidently has now become political…..It’s time for a new sports channel whose concern is sports and not politics!

Ricckky, I can answer that question. Because they are not real Christians and they do not believe in objective morality. Instead, they believe in the “ends justify the means”. Therefore, the commandment “Thou shalt not bear false witness.” has no impact on their conscience. They have a malformed conscience that has become numbed by their constant rejection of God. Therefore, they can justify lying or any other sort of behavior because it serves their purpose. This is always what happens when people reject God.

Even if Glenn were right, which he is not, the analogy still doesn’t make sense. Boehner and Obama are not leader’s of different countries. They are both part of the U.S. government which requires them to work together. To say that they are polar opposites and shouldn’t communicate or associate with each other would be incredibly irresponsible and each would be failing to do their job.

The liberals are too afraid that the remaining citizens who believe their crap will bail on them if they hear the h word in relation to their leader (he certainly isn’t my leader or the leader of the USA). Mr. Williams said nothing wrong in making the comparison–he was absolutely correct. obamy hates the republicans and all US citizens who believe in the Constitution. obamy refuses to consider that Americans (in general) like the way this country is–so in essense boehner was playing golf with someone who wants to destroy him and those he represents, ergo hilter and netanyahu.

BTW boehner sold out the republican party by “compromising” with the liberals and playing golf is just the good old boy way of congratulating themselves that they “put another one” over on the US citizens. That being said–at least Hank Williams jr is a real American. Can say the same for that p o s in the White House.

I think it says a lot that the first thing that comes to his mind in relation to Obama is Hitler. Was it a comparison? Only in that the first thing he used as an example included Hitler. Oil and water didn’t work? How about cats and dogs? Oh those don’t golf, huh? Why not a sports analogy; he’s a sports guy after all. Washington – Washington State? UF versus FSU? Red Sox versus Yankees?

The first thing that came to mind was Hitler when he thinks of Obama. It’s not a comparison, and Beck is right; it’s an association.
