This Is How Occupy D.C. Protesters Reacted to a Live Nativity Scene in Their Encampment

Many odd scenes and bizarre events — both legal and illegal — have been reported at Occupy Wall Street protests across America. The presence of a live nativity scene can now be added to the list.

Videographer Benny Johnson was curious to see how Occupy D.C. protesters at McPherson Square would react to the presence of a nativity, so he headed down, camera and plastic baby Jesus in hand, to see. Johnson edited, funded, filmed and narrated what amounts to an entertaining — and telling — experience.

“What happens when you put a nativity scene in the middle of an Occupy camp?,” Johnson asks during the clip’s introduction. As the video opens, two actors (Mary and Joseph) can be seen next to a manger housing the central figure — baby Jesus. In front of the couple is a sign that reads “Occupy Christmas,” along with a Bible verse (Luke 2:17-20).

The response from the Occupiers was diverse. ”This ain’t a church, man,” one guy said. Another protester could be heard asking, ”Is that legal?” Yet another person, clearly responding to him said, ”No check — go check.”

Early on in the clip, a man with a bandanna covering his face, has a strong reaction as he addresses the actors in the nativity (starts around the :40 mark).

“I wouldn’t get up here and start preaching Islam to people.” he said. “I wouldn‘t because it’s not my place. It’s not your place either.”

Later, the same guy appears again and explains why he’s opposed. ”I’m a follower of Islam. I just think it’s in bad taste,” he explains. “The atrocities of the Christian faith…ravish humanity.”

Johnson later asks, “If 76% of Americans identify themselves as Christians, as a populace movement wouldn’t the Occupy Movement be for a nativity scene?” Another protester chimes in, saying, ”It goes against what our Founding Fathers created in this country.”

But not everyone was negative regarding the nativity’s presence. Another protester expressed his surprise to the opposition, saying, ”I think it’s beautiful. I think it’s right on time. Christ is the reason for Christmas. I don’t know why [the other protester would] be offended.”

      Mr. Islam, this country was founded and built on the fundamental principals of Christ. Why should we change our country into a vision of your false religion? What would happen if I wanted to push Christianity in the middle east? I would be killed on the spot…Yes, you are so tolerant!!

      The USA was built on Biblical principals and this is our culture stop trying to change it. If you want to take over a culture with Islam I suggest you move back to the middle east. That is their culture and I know for a fact I would be KILLED if I preached Jesus in your culture. Who is the intolerant culture?       I really don’t think these anti-capitalist people are exclusively anti-christian… Blaze already reported this movement argued that Jesus would be on their side..I know some lefty people who are all for this OWS crap that are quite christian. Then you have the guy at the end of the video seemingly quite christian too… After enough time of course will find people to give their 2 cents in opposition it. To set up the bait like that is a bit immature. I was a tea part protest once and I have to say I felt pretty uncomfortable by people near me with signs saying and shouting “this is a christian nation.” This is not a christian nation! No one in my family has ever been christian and we’ve been in this country since 1895. We are Jews. As an American I shouldn’t have to hear my fellow Americans tell me our country is affiliated with a certain religion. That certainly is not what the founders intended. Government sponsored religion is what a lot on the right are fighting for and that is ESSENTIALLY unAmerican. I have nothing against a town hall or church putting up a christmas tree or whatever.. If most people are in fact christian, and that has been the tradition that’s, fine but that doesn’t give any christian the right to exclaim since they are a majority that this is a christian nation! That is the kind of thing our founders were trying to avoid.

You certainly do have freedom from any religion you want in the US and as a Jew I know exactly what she means. You should read about the Spanish Inquisition (as one example of others) as to what happens when you don’t have “freedom from religion.” You have freedom to practice (peacefully), or not (peacefully) . Welcome to freedom. Unfortunately these OWS people don’t know what freedom is either.

      I cant really say what I would like to about Islam but believe me it aint no religion thats for certain, It is just an excuse for people to act like blood-thirsty savages and use the ‘religion rap’ to get away with it. You know the real brave people, like the ones who get off on abusing women and children and helpless animals and such. You know real big tuff brave men. When my son was in Iraq he was there for four years and he was among the first ones in there and he said that they wasnt that brave when it came to actually comming face to face with men and said they would litterally ‘wet and soil theirselves’ when caught and confronted and cry like little school-girls. So dont be fooled into thinking that these fools cant be defeated because they can because when confronted with men who actually are capable of fighting back as opposed to women and children they dont know what the heck to do.       islam is not about violence.       @Cesium, why do they think Jesus would be on their side? In order to know what Jesus is like and who He really is, one has to read the Bible, the book about Him. Nowhere in the Bible does He teach rebellion against the government, against one’s boss, etc. Jesus said to render to Caesar that which is Caesar’s. Peter, an apostle appointed directly by Jesus, instructed to obey the king as supreme. Romans 13 tells of man’s place with governmental authority. Jesus is God, and since God gave the Bible to man, the Bible is Jesus’ words. Jesus said His words shall not pass away. When these protesters make false claims about Jesus, they either don‘t know what they are talking about because they haven’t bothered to read about Him or they are making up another Jesus that never existed except in their own imaginations.

      This generalized history recollection really annoys me, Islam is a religion of hate, it gives specific allowance to killing all infidels (those who are not Muslim for all you slow thinkers). Therefore the ‘followers’ of Islam are carrying out what that book of theirs spells out. Christianity however, being hijacked numerous times throughout history (inquisitions, ROMAN *****), in the name of Christ yes, but far, far from His teachings which were always peaceful, always about submitting to your aggressor except in protecting family, friends, strangers, or property as the situation dictates the conscience of those confronted. But turn the other cheek is ALWAYS the best way according to Christ. Christ‘s example of suffering was a ’type’ by which He wanted us to live, not so much as to ensure the damnation of the offender but I believe to possibly shame the offender and hopefully have their heart’s pricked so that they might turn from their wicked ways and look towards Christ. Christ’s last words in the flesh, after suffering all things by the hand of his captors, and the unimaginable suffering for the sins of the whole human race said, “Forgive them Father for they know not what they do”.

      @Miami… The constitution does not explicitly say “freedom from” It says “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion” So, if you elect someone who puts their Christianity into their campaign and that helps them get voted, that is the choice of the people.. Fine. Most people are christian and unfortunately that is at the forefront of considering a candidate. Regardless of electing a christian leader that does not officially define our country as a “christian nation.” What if by some unexpected future reality, Jews became a majority and they uphold the constitution to a T and fight terrorism and socialist agendas the way conservative christians want? but over time You see less nativity scenes and more menorahs… Is it now a Jewish nation? How would you feel as a christian at a protest of some sort hearing people tout off “this is a Jewish nation?” And trust me, Jews do respect Christians as people and support their faith but we don’t respect the religion much and we highly disagree with christian beliefs. We find Christianity it to be false, we just don’t say it. So in the event Jews became a majority, we still would not be a “Jewish Nation.” Before White christians slaughtered the indians it was many polytheistic nations. Our founders encouraged the faith of christians citizens but by no means did they want any religion to be federally sponsored. A state can sponsor a religion, not the feds.

What I find fascinating is the practice of ideological cannibalism the group engages in as soon as the nativity scene is put up. Watching some of the protestors freak out at the other ones is just too fun to pass up.

      The words “Occupy Christmas”, right over the Bible verse. If it said, “Merry Christmas from the Occupy Wall Street Movement”, OK, that’s their holiday greeting. But to “Occupy” Christmas? It comes off as hijacking.

      I’m not quite sure why people would think the pope is the anti-Christ. But compare that to the views of those who see all Catholics as child molesters, or at best, enablers of child molestation.

    This doesn’t really seem newsworthy in that the protesters reacted as they should. Some seem to disagree, but they did not disrupt the scene. Then again, the fact that some protesters, even the one who felt the need to cover his face(until he needed a cigarette), acted rationally is somewhat newsworthy…

      I literally spit coffee when the girl who claimed to be Jewish said that Freedom OF Religion was the same thing as Freedom FROM Religion. Seriously? Is this the best that American tax dollars can pay for. Makes me feel sorrow for the half assed education our schools are providing.

      I know, I know 10th. How is it we’re the only group of people (conservatives) that understand that when the constitution was created by the founders they explicitly wanted a fundamentalist Christian nation? It’s unbelievable that any school would teach otherwise. This nation was founded on Christianity and in fact the new Holy Land is somewhere in Indiana. People don’t realize this will be Israel in the future. Maybe that’s why Israel is trying so hard to seem like the holy land America should be worth dying for, because we‘re going to find out soon that it’s not worth dying for. Praise the Lord, Ronald ‘McDonald Christ’ Reagan. Amen and may he trickle down upon you.

      I actually have very little negative to say about Reagan. Freidmans economic ideals seemed to work very well when Reagan allowed them to be implemented. So trickle whatever was successful. Now that “claims to be” Jewish girl who looks like she has something stapled into just below her lower lip reminds me everything that is wrong with the current education system, and she surely represents the same radical zionist silliness that Obama, Emanuel, Soros, Axelrod, Zakheim and others represent who represent the B’nai Israel perversion of Judaism peddled by Maurice Strong and his hideous wife out at the Baca Ranch in Colorado where they mingle every religion together in their disgusting filth they are calling the one world religion.       Whats really sad is these fools have been told that Ch’e was a big fighter that went-out with his guns a blazin like in some sham of a movie that is supposedly out there says but in REAL LIFE he went down begging and crying for his worthless life.     Great idea for courthouses and parks all across the country. The Constitution and local law doesn‘t say what you can or can’t wear to a peaceful public gathering. Nobody has to speak, but a few musicians could just happen to be there tuning their instruments and accidentally hitting the notes to Silent Night and Amazing Grace, etc.

      I’m sorry, I’m tired of this pagan stuff. Christ-Mas is not pagan. Maybe some of the things now associated with Christmas were at one time pagan. But, the Church brilliantly turned them into things with Christian meaning. Things evolve over time. Christ is, always was. and always will be the true meaning of Christmas.

      NHWINTER…The older Christian cultures (Greek, Latin/Italian, French) do not have a tradition in the trees and santa etc. These are later adoptions by the growth of the church in western Europe. Idiots who tout “pagan” don’t have a credible grasp of the history of the church, they only know what their limited (indeed very limited) knowledge affords them. They seem to believe the all of Christianity celebrates Christmas with trees, lights and santa. They don’t have enough depth of knowledge to know that the Orthodox celebration of Christmas for instance uses the Julian calendar (not the Gregorian calendar) and doesn’t celebrate christmas on December 25. But tell one of these “pagan” idiots stuff like that and their heads explode.
