This Is Rick Santorum’s Rousing Speech After His Surge in Iowa: ‘Game On’

After stunning many people across the country with a virtual tie with Mitt Romney in the Iowa Caucus (Romney won by eight votes), Rick Santorum gave a rousing speech. It started simply: “Game on.”

“Thank you so much, Iowa, for standing up and not compromising, by standing up and being bold,” Santorum told cheering backers. “You have taken the first step toward taking back this country.”

Supporters joined Santorum for a noisy victory celebration after tabulation of Tuesday night’s caucuses went into the early hours of Wednesday without a winner.

The Associated Press did not declare a winner, but Iowa Republican chairman Matt Strawn announced early Wednesday that Romney ended up with 30,015 votes to 30,007 for Santorum. Santorum’s camp was taking the showing as the moral equivalent of a win, because their support grew so fast in the last couple of weeks.

You can watch part of Santorum’s speech below, followed by his full speech:

“This is a Cinderella story,” said Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz, the only statewide elected official to endorse Santorum. “Two weeks ago we were in last place.”

Santorum’s surge was built on a traditional Iowa caucus campaign: showing up often, meeting as many activists as possible, and paying attention to the state where precinct caucuses launch the presidential nominating season.

“This has been an incredible journey – all 99 counties, 381 town hall meetings, 36 Pizza Ranches,” Santorum said.

The former senator from Pennsylvania based his showing on strong backing from the evangelicals and social conservatives who play an important role in the state’s Republican politics. His victory speech reflected that sentiment.

“God has given us this great country to allow his people to be free,” he said. “I offer a public thanks to God.”

Santorum moved almost immediately to take advantage of his strong finish, firing out a fundraising appeal to deal with his most pressing problem, a lack of money.

“It’s now or never for conservative voters,” his appeal said. “I am the only authentic, passionate conservative who can unite the GOP.”

The crowd jamming his victory celebration waited patiently for the votes to be counted, occasionally singing songs like “Amazing Grace” and chanting “We pick Rick.”

Santorum talked of his grandfather, who he said worked in the Pennsylvania coal mines to bring the rest of the family to America.

“My dad taught me to work hard,” he said. “There are so many men and women who would love to work, but they don’t have the opportunity.”

Santorum vowed to offer something different than other Republicans by focusing on bolstering the nation’s industrial base.

“There is another vision that some Republicans offer which is just let’s cut taxes, let’s just reduce spending and everything will be fine,” he said.

Santorum called for a focus on industrial jobs.

“We found those jobs leaving Iowa,” he said. “It’s because the government made worker uncompetitive by driving up the cost of doing business.”

Closing his campaign by appealing to young people, he expanded on the theme of smaller government.

“It will crush your pocketbook in the future,” he said. “Hold the candidates accountable to the intractable problem of exploding government.”

Bob Vander Plaats, who heads the conservative Family Leader and endorsed Santorum, said the result have a clear impact.

“It means we have a true pro-family conservative to go one on one with Mitt Romney,” he said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

So…what is Santorums plan to cut the deficit? What is his plan to cut spending? What is his plan to stop Americans from being killed by terrorist, this means American troops as well. What is his plan to oppress gays and kill more muslims? This bigot is going to sink like a stone this week once the media just rips this paper tiger to shreds.

Wow, Romney spent the most, had the entire establishment GOP and the entire media on his side. including the NYT’s and Foxnews. and he could barely squeak by with 8 vote win…….in an open caucus where Democrats can be a Republican for the night

Romney‘s win proves he can’t win. His campaign is essentially over , just like the last time he ran

How does Rick Santorum stand with Israel when he advocates sending foreign aid, military arms, and troops to defend Arab Muslim Nations who hate Israel like Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Egypt, Jordan, and Yemen?

How is foreign aid in general a “conservative” policy?

How is Santorum’s support in favor of the Department of Education a “conservative” view?

Rick is not a conservative. I really hope you answer the 1st question because no one else can…..

Yeah, Santorum. For the first time in a long time, I felt pride and hope. Even a tear came to my eye. Santorum went up against two Elite, NWO guys, Romney and Gingrich. He did it the American way, with hard work, perseverance and faith. His values of human life is real and he lives it. He will fight for the true American values. He spoke without a teleprompter and Romney took his down as soon as he saw him, speak from his heart. In my opinion, Romney was no match to Santorum. The people have spoken and now we know Santorum doesn’t have the money to fight the NWO Elite funds.
We have been given more of the same from the very people that want to turn us into a One World Government and rule the World with Fascism, the same people that just took our Freedom with the NDAA. They were all in on the signing of this bill and the preparing of FEMA Camps to imprison freedom loving Americans. I haven’t given any money to the Republican Committees as of yet, because it will go to the same old corrupt NWO fund. We now have two choices left for the future of Americans freedom and we must hold their feet to the fire and get behind them personally. As for me I have now decided on Santorum. I like Paul’s Constitutional and deficit policy, but the fact that he doesn’t understand the threat of a Islamic Cale fate really worries me. I truly believe that the power of God will lead us and the nominee with divine intervention. I felt that intervention last night with Santorum. God Bless and Uni

OKIE, as said before foreign aid is sometimes necessary. You will find, if Santorum should win the nomination and the Presidency, that foreign aid to Arab countries will diminish substantially, particularly if Obama’s Muslim Brotherhood pals continue to be successful in taking over leadership in more nations in the Middle East. As far as foreign aid to Pakistan, seeing they have nuke’s and are an unstable country, foreign aid should not be arbitrarily cut off without closer analysis.

Department of Education? I believe they will definitely come under much closer scrutiny under Santorum – much closer.

But, if Romney can garner that much support in Iowa, he’s got the nomination locked-up. So, we’ll have two progressives battling it out for POTUS – just like 2008.

Well I’m really impressed to see the extent to which the evangelicals stuck together. I believe they are wrong on their selection but they certainly were able to separate the wheat from the chaff in terms of selecting the most socially conservative candidate. Personally I don’t have much fault with Santorum’s social agenda. I even believe that our Christian Founders even went as far as to incorporate their Christian biases into the laws of that day. There’s absolutely no way in a million years that they would have ever consented to abortion or homosexuality in that day and that’s a fact!

With that being said and an understanding that the US Constitution has already been completely undermined, I find myself falling in strongly with Dr. Paul in his quest to return as much power as possible back to the states even if that means foregoing Federal laws against such highly contentious and controversial subjects as abortion, homosexuality, and drugs. We’ve lost these battles on the Federal front. Please let’s move on. There’s no way in hell that we are going to win these fights at the Federal level now. A wise General knows when to retreat and live to fight another day. Dr. Paul is trying to help you win on these issues which mean so much to the family and are so deeply rooted in our faith.

On foreign affairs Dr. Paul is absolutely the only Conservative in the race. He will not waste our precious treasure in the sand fields of the Middle East as Progressives fa

You are wrong. Rick Santorum openly defends foreign aid as well as arming and defending Muslim Nations as Saudi Arabia.  NO it is not needed and I do not need to be forced to support Muslims who hate Israel with my tax dollars ever. That is redistribution of wealth internationally. It’s plain up wrong and progressive. Rick has only advocated for MORE tax dollars be sent to Muslim tyrants who hate Israel.

Rick openly supports the department of education and wants to dictate what is taught in schools. Read his book, it says just that. Rick voted to double the size of the department of Education.

We don’t give aid to N Korea even though they have nukes and are unstable. Why should we Pakistan? We gave them billions and they hide Bin Laden from us. Ya, that bribery sure is working isn’t it…..

It’s the economy stupid. If Santorem runs a purely social conservative campaign against Obama, we will lose again.

While running on marriage, gays, and abortion may rally the conservative evangelical right, it will turn off the center independents. I am very conservative on all of those social issues, but right now the economy and the debt is the number one issue that voters card about.

First win the white house and the senate on fiscal issues, then set a social agenda once in office.

Today, Santorum tells voters that Medicare is “crushing” the “entire health care system.” In 2003, Santorum voted for the Medicare drug entitlement that costs taxpayers more than $60 billion a year and almost $16 trillion in unfunded liabilities. Santorum voted for the 2005 “bridge to nowhere” bill and was an earmark enthusiast his entire career.

These days, Santorum regularly joins a chorus of voices claiming that he would greatly reduce the role of federal government in local education. When he had a say, he supported No Child Left Behind and expanded the federal control of school systems. In his book, in fact, Santorum advocates dictating a certain curriculum to all schools. The right kind. It’s not the authority of government that irks him, but rather the content of the material Washington is peddling today. .

      Exactly.
The thing is, we need to support a REAL conservative, no matter what.
“There are those who will point to Barack Obama’s ridiculous assaults on the constitution, the uniquely American culture, and the pocket-books of working men and women of every description as moral imperatives that demand we all go to the polling places in November and support whatever candidate the GOP musters. I’ve heard it before, and I’ve heard it until I’m sick to death of hearing it. I’ve heard it in every election in my adult life save only 1984. I will hear it no more. This is my challenge to the GOP: Find an actual conservative or watch me take a powder in November.”

James Madison, Feb. 3, 1792 “It is to be recollected that the terms ”common defence and general welfare,” as here used, are not novel terms, first introduced into this Constitution. They are terms familiar in their construction, and well known to the people of America. …On the contrary, it was always considered clear and certain that the old Congress was limited to the enumerated powers, and that the enumeration limited and explained the general terms. I ask the gentlemen themselves, whether it was ever supposed or suspected that the old Congress could give away the money of the states to bounties to encourage agriculture, or for any other purpose they pleased. “……”If Congress can employ money indefinitely to the general welfare, and are the sole and supreme judges of the general welfare…they may a point teachers in every state, county, and parish, and pay them out of their public treasury; they may take into their own hands the education of children, establishing in like manner schools throughout the Union; they may assume the provision for the poor; they may undertake the regulation of all roads other than post-roads; in short, every thing, from the highest object of state legislation down to the most minute object of police, would be thrown under the power of Congress; for every object I have mentioned would admit of the application of money, and might be called, if Congress pleased, provisions for the general welfare.”

Very positive results from Iowa. Santorum said it well: “Game On”! Now we have a strong Conservative in the race. Along with the Libertarian and the Moderate, it will be a fair fight — not the fracturing of the conservative vote.

      @ Timothy_Ried
“@carbon What part, Article and section, of the US Constitution enumerates foreign policy? What does it say? What part enumerates education? What does it say? What part implies either of these by the Federal Gov? What does it say?”
Foreign policy is addressed in several parts of the US Constitution. Article I, section 8 has provisions regarding declaration of war, funding of military forces, and to “punish . . . Offenses against the Law of Nations.“ That section also has the ”necessary and proper” clause, which is likely of significance regarding foreign policy, but not education. Article II, section 2 has provisions regarding treaties and ambassadors. As regards education — I can’t find anything. Was that your point?

      http://news.yahoo.com/santorum-surge…152702229.html

Rick Santorum’s powerful finish in the Iowa caucus is bringing fresh attention to his tenure in Congress, including ethics questions that dogged him about a preferred mortgage he received from a bank run by campaign donors, and federal funds that went to a real estate developer who backed his charity.

One of the top donors to Santorum’s charity was also the beneficiary of an $8 million Santorum-sponsored federal earmark, according to published reports. Melanie Sloan, a former federal prosecutor who filed an ethics complaint against Santorum in 2006 on behalf of a watchdog group, said her organization’s website received a tidal wave of visitors in the past 24 hours, and in an interview she said she believes people will discover that the GOP presidential contender is “hardly the moral paragon he purports to be.”

Why is this coming out now? Why not during Iowa and “the surge”?

Did anyone else note the “new math” that was in play last night during the fox caucus coverage? I first made note of it at their web site when @9% of the counties had reported in. What it was is the totals of all the candidates % percentage of the votes added up to ………..105%
      Paul 24%
      Santorum 23%
      Romney 23%
      Gingrich 13%
      Perry 11%
      Bachman 6%
      Huntsman 3%
      Cain 1%
      undecided 1%

A total of 105%, now ifi recall there can’t be more than 100% of anything, yes?
Perhaps those “neutral, unbiased repub Neocon bean counters” were instructed to add 10% to the Romney/Santorum counts and then to report the inflated numbers. Unless someone counted the actual physical number of ballots handed in, it would only slightly increase the tally in every count and would’ve basically undetectable, until the percentage came into play.
I‘ve a feeling that something wasn’t quite kosher.

Perry spent over $300 per vote. I don’t think that really means anything. Santorum was simply the last candidate left for all the anti-Romney voters to jump to after Gingrich was destroyed. In fact, the results exactly reflect the order in which each candidate has risen to the top. Bachmann, Perry, Gingrich, Santorum.

OKIE FROM PENOKIE, try again later, Santorum and Obama are polar opposites.

Obama is anti-family, supports abortion, gay crap, including the destruction of our military by repealing “don’t ask, don’t tell”, including gay marriage and gay adoption. Santorum is pro life and pro family.

Obama is anti-Israel. Santorum is pro-Israel.

There are certain areas where foreign aid is still appropriate.

Obama is not only pro Islam, but helped engineer opening paths for Muslim Brotherhood to take over various Arab countries in the Middle East and is still doing it.

Obama is anti-small business and always has been.

Obama is a prolific liar and deceiver. it’s part of his Muslim sympathies, if not actual beliefs.

Obama is not a Christian nor does he hold to the tenets of Christianity, and in fact opposes them.

The list goes on and on.

Santorum has praised Obama for his family values, and actually said if other African American’s would follow the president’s example they wouldn’t be in such bad shape.

Contrary to Michelle Bachman, “gay rights” is not the most important issue of the day. Everything I hear Christians saying today about gays was said about blacks in the past. They can’t serve in the military because they will cause division, blacks and whites can’t marry because it’s not natural. Why do we care so much about gays, they have served in the military for years, if the troops don’t care that they are out, why should the people. Our government shouldn’t be in the business of discriminating against anyone. The civil rights act of 1964 was written for a reason.

Who the hell cares about Israel. Why don’t people say we are pro Japan, or pro South Korea? If Israel is part of God’s plan, why can’t God protect them. Through out the bible Israel rose up on it’s own from within it’s own ranks to fight for their freedom. Even when they fought for their independence they did it alone. They easily defended themselves in the 6 days wars. The only reason people keep saying we need to protect Israel is because our news organization say so. Even Netanyahu wants us to leave them alone.

Why does a person’s Christian or Muslim values matter? And if Rick is such a Christian why was he considered one of the most corrupt politicians in the senate in 2006?

I agree about Bachman and Perry votes heading (mostly) towards Santorum. I am in VA and it looks like my choices will be Romney and Paul. Easy choice for Paul. But I had always seen Santorum as a conservative when he was a senator and have been hoping to see him make a move in the race like this. I am, however, concerned about his commitment to truly decreasing the cost, scope, and size of government. This is the ONLY way to truly solve the most pressing and dangerous threat to our republic. He‘s gonna have to convince me that he’s fully alert to this pressing problem. I understand that we cannot instantly withdraw from the world diplomatically, but I’m not terribly interested in hearing a candidate focus on too much on socially conservative ideals or foreign policy. A proper balance would be 75% budget/Govt. scale down and 25% other stuff. We gotta straighten out the checkbook before the power gets turned off. We can’t be planning foreign vacations right now, ya know?

Romney’s speech was almost word for word the same speech he gave earlier – and I wasn’t all that impressed with it the first time around. And if the media reported it correctly, his team set up a teleprompter for him and then took it down as soon as Santorum said he “never spoke from notes”. If the teleprompter thing was true, it gives the impression that Romney is only worried about his image and plays the “Give them what they want to see” theatrics game. Would he have used the teleprompter if Santorum had used one?

Paul’s speech was ok in substance but the delivery was poor. When his voice gets a little higher and that wild-eyed fanatical look sets in he looks out of control. The same thing happens almost every he speaks to the public. At times how he says things cloud what he is saying.

Santorum’s speech was a bit erratic but it didn’t seem robotic. It had more of a conversational engaging tone. He was speaking to people not at them. I liked the fact that he didn’t turn it into a stump speech. He touched on a few things but it wasn’t a canned campaign speech.

For the record I’m not supporting any candidate yet. I’m still taking an in-depth look at all of them. For me, they all have good points & bad points. One thing I do know is that this is a crucial presidential election and our country has a lot at stake. It’s always important to research the candidates before you vote but this time it’s doubly so.

      Tim,

This is not over. It is only the beginning. If people TRULY want real change, they will make it their personal business to investigate all the records of all the candidates and see who aligns with our Constitution.

Everyone screams “Uphold the Constitution!!!“ ”Uphold the Constitution!!!”………so why is it that they will demonize the one man who does?
The Hegelian Dialectic is alive and well.
Beck is a very happy camper right now on the radio. Before you pat yourself on the back, Glenn, think about your very vocal and lucrative “love of our Founding Fathers, and the Constitution.”
It makes no sense to the millions of people who know who the Constitutional candidate is to see this dichotomy in you. As for our household and millions of others who love America and Liberty, our vote will be for Ron Paul for REAL change. Change that takes us “Back to the Future” so to speak..(back to the constitution so we can get on to our future).

@grace Considering his core values – In short, they do indeed need cleaing out. His practice of doing only what is best for himself, not his constituents (if it happens to benefit them, then he looks good too), could be flushed and replaced something far more beneficial. Considering his gender – I suppose it might do him some use, but given the nature of the particular, I have no idea how he would accomplish that.

Since you are still promoting this sort of garbage this must mean you are not for upholding the US Constitution. On another note, why is it that everyone goes to the how and not the why? While its true that all of our wars are political in nature (since WWII anyway), the fact that you support this is shameful. If we are Christians, we ought to reserve force as a very last option. The neo-cons and the modern military industrial complex have made war our first option and over 1 million people have died at the hands of our military in the last two decades. Am I reading you right? Killing one million people is justified when we were never threatened by Iraq? Think about it…1 million people..Fathers, Mothers, Children. Killing innocent people is one of the few exports we have left.

Patton: since when has shrinking the military been a liberal thing? By that standard Hitler, Stalin, Kim Jung IL, and China have conservative foreign policy. What‘s being missed in all of this is today’s wars are not fought with man power anymore. The future of war is small groups of highly trained soldiers and unmanned drones. Get our military home where the defense department can actually focus on defense and not offense and let not go to war unless it is the last option and not just the most profitable one.

Thats called a strawman arguement…goodjob. But I will point out the stupidity of your analogies. Just because Hitler had a big army, it does not mean that a having a big army means you are a nazi. It was the most Heart felt nominee speech I heard since Ronald Reagan. You may not know Rick Santorum, or agree with anything you heard the media say he stands for, but after that speech and his grassroots stomp, I feel he captured the heart of America. I have been a Rick Santorum supporter from day one and he didn’t dissapoint!! Still Praying for this country!!

I’m proud to say, after researching and listening to the man himself, that I am a Santorum supporter.
Sad Bachmann is out of the race, but that leave Rick as the only true Nom left and ALL Conservative and Tea Party members need to get behind this man. Because he stand for THE PEOPLE and would fall on his sword for this country.

To say Rick is a Tea Party candidate is to take a giant dump on what the Tea Part stands for.

I’m from PA and have met Rick Santorum and heard him speak personally. He is very gracious and appreciative of his supporters. Even if you don’t like some things about Rick, he does listen to the people and your thoughts count with him. He would make a great President.

I am very impressed….I have said that I will vote for integrity…he certainly demonstrates this…What a great speech. I pray each day that God will work miracles during this election…looks like I will not be disappointed.

Vote for integrity, the guy who didn’t just endorse Specter, he defended him when conservatives tried to get Specter out of his position after declaring that he wouldn’t approve of conservative judges.

This same guy was also named one of the most corrupt politicians. Yeah, that’s integrity right there. Maybe if Glenn started looking beyond who looks the most religious he’d see what a mistake calling Santorum possibly the next George Washington. Sort of like how Santorum might come to the realization that his support for expanding Medicare wasn’t a good thing either.

Integrity is what he demonstrates?!? with one speech in the present and a complete lack of it in the past?!? Integrity…..really? Integrity is doing what is right when no one is looking, Santorum does what‘s right only when the world is looking and even then only when it’s in HIS best interests. It’s demonstrated by history, and this guys is spotty at the very best.

Did MSNBC do the overlay “ Except Homos” after Rick Santorum made the dignity comments towards the end of the first video?

I agree; I was amazed at the results last night. I think conservatives have a reason to celebrate today. Great job, Rick!!!

JP16, get a life. Can’t say I agree with Santorum supporting Specter, but Santorum is not a progressive, but he does have a few things to clean up along the way. Trust me, he profoundly can beat Obama’s butt, and Obama not only needs to be beaten but bruised on the way out. Beaten badly would just maybe fracture the liberal lefts foundation. That, would be a good thing.
