Where Does Romney Stand on Guns? It‘s ’Complicated’ (With Flashback Video)

Mitt Romney Has a Complex History on Gun Policy | Second Amendment, NRA

Is Mitt Romney a fearless defender of the Second Amendment, a fierce anti-gun zealot or a flip-flopper merely looking to capitalize on the right to bear arms for political gain? The jury may still be out, but BuzzFeed’s Andrew Kaczynski claims that the Republican presidential nominee has a “complicated history on guns.” The Wall Street Journal, too, embraces this notion:

Mr. Romney’s record on guns as governor was mixed. He signed an assault-weapons ban in 2004, but gun-rights groups supported the bill because it created certain protections for gun owners, according to a scorecard compiled by the Gun Owners’ Action League. During his tenure as governor, Mr. Romney also proposed raising the fees for a permit to $75 from $25. The legislature eventually bumped it up to $100.

Gun-rights advocates said their relationship with Mr. Romney and his staff improved noticeably during his tenure as governor. In 2005, he deemed May 7 “Right to Bear Arms Day.”

As a presidential candidate, Mr. Romney has been unequivocal in his opposition to any new restrictions on gun owners, saying he believes in “safe and responsible gun ownership” as long as those who exercise the right “do so lawfully and properly.” His campaign website says Mr. Romney “will fight the battle on all fronts to protect and promote the Second Amendment.”

In the past, Romney has seemed — at moments — to part ways with the National Rifle Association (NRA), but today, he will address the NRA’s Celebration of American Values Leadership Forum. Through a timeline of events, statements and documentation, Romney’s opinions on guns and the Second Amendment can be tracked and assessed.

First, BuzzFeed presents a 1994 clip from a Massachusetts Senatorial seat debate between Ted Kennedy and Mitt Romney. In it, Romney derided Kennedy for working to ensure that “there would not be mandatory sentences imposed on people who used guns in the commission of crimes.”

Watch the debate, below:

In 2002, Romney was seen discussing Massachusetts gun laws — laws he said he supported and would not chip away at (Romney became governor in 2003 and served until 2007). “They (the laws) help protect us and provide for our safety,” he said:

During the same year, while running for governor, he claimed that, once “the science tells us it works,” he’d support ballistic fingerprinting (the NRA, among other right-leaning groups has been highly critical in the past of this method of crime-fighting).

Romney, of course, was careful to say that he would rely on studies before definitively supporting it:

BuzzFeed also provides a screen shot from Romney’s 2002 web site that reiterated his support for “the strict enforcement of gun laws” and “the federal assault weapons ban.“ But the statement also claims that he supported hunters who ”responsibly own and use firearms.”

Mitt Romney Has a Complex History on Gun Policy | Second Amendment, NRAIn a 2004 press release, Romney signed a permanent assault weapons ban into law in Massachusetts. But while many will see this as an anti-gun stance, there were some elements within the provision that assisted gun proponents.

For example, a two-year extension on the firearm identification card and term was granted and a 90-day grace period was given for those seeking to renew licenses. Here’s a copy of the letter announcing these regulatory changes:

Mitt Romney Has a Complex History on Gun Policy | Second Amendment, NRA

In 2007, he reiterated support for the Second Amendment and claimed that he has a gun, goes hunting and is a member of the NRA. BuzzFeed called these claims “false.” After Romney made his gun ownership claim, he was corrected — and he inevitably admitted — that the gun was his son’s and not his own.

At a town hall event earlier this year, Romney, again, claimed that he owns guns. Following his statement, a spokesperson told reporters that the candidate owns two shotguns. The natural question is: Did he purchase them after the 2007 flap? Listen to his comments from 2007, below:

At a Feb. 2012 town hall, Romney comprehensively stated the reasons why he believes Americans should be able to purchase guns.

“But we have a right in this country to bear arms and I know that there are people who think that somehow that should change and they keep looking for laws for a way to stop awful things from happening,” he said. “And there are awful things that happen. But there already are laws that are designed to protect people and unfortunately people violate the laws.”

Romney continued, going on to discuss how the laws should be managed.

“So trying to find more laws to change bad behavior isn’t the answer, the answer is to find that bad behavior the people who are inclined to bad behavior, my own view is lets protect the second amendment let’s protect the right of Americans to bear arms whether for hunting, for sportsman for personal protection for whatever legal purpose someone might have,” he said.

During the same year as the gun-ownership mishap, Romney said “I don’t line up 100 percent with the NRA,” as he went on to explain some of his views on gun laws:

Also in 2007, he said “my door was always open to you” in an address to NRA members at the annual Celebration of American Values Leadership Forum:

So, it seems Romney’s record is indeed complicated when it comes to guns. While he has consistently defended the Second Amendment, he has done so with numerous caveats. These exceptions will likely be viewed as reasonable by some and as evidence of flip-floppery by others.

In the end, the former Massachusetts governor and likely GOP presidential nominee has taken — all things considered — a relatively moderate stance on gun regulation. In the past, the NRA has given Romney a “B” grade for his handling of these issues. This, too, corroborates the notion that he has had a mixed bag of policies when it comes to addressing ownership and usage.

I know where he stands with them, wherever he has to stand with or without them whatever it takes to maintain the value of money through government power. As long as money stays good, people will keep their guns, but if uncle Sam has to mop up much of your money, then the guns got to go.

See I know how they are going to in-part take away you guns. Like now people are going to doctors for check-ups and doctors are asking patients if they own guns. Well, in my estimates they are going to take the records of all the people who say they own guns, and they are going to find a common characteristic of all the patients who own guns, and then they are going to “Nudge” some kind of new regulation by painting that characteristic in a bad-light, then all those previous gun owners won’t be able to register to own guns.

      Who cares?
Romrhoid is going to lose if he gets nominated in Tampa.
He can barely draw a crowd of 500 people, compared to Ron Paul who CONSISTENTLY draws 2 to 8,000+ people EVERYWHERE he goes.

No one is excited about a Goldman Sachs vs Goldman Sachs contest for the White House.

Santy has now “etch a sketched” his website clean of any Romrhoid criticism, and will most likely get a bailout from Romrhoid for his in debt campaign. Doesn’t sound very fiscally conservative to me.

“Mr. Moonbase”, who is several million in debt, and supposedly can’t account for a million of it, will probably also get a bailout when he falls in line.
(And these guys think they can solve the nation’s debt crisis?!?)

I repeat. Romrhoid WILL LOSE, just like McStain did.

      You’ve been sold out. Again.

Or perhaps when people go to the doctor for a check-up, and doctors ask whether or not they have guns, and the patient says “It’s not your business“ or they do but say ”No”, they will pass legislation saying immoral liars shouldn’t have guns, or if you say “It’s not your business” then maybe they will pass a law saying you are impeding justice in a healthcare system where the government is overseeing fairness. Out of a need to protect you will be labeled a criminal and not allowed to own a firearm.

I am sorry guys, while i love the idea, we are from from having evolved enough as people to do exist as you wish. Sorry, but this on sentence amendment is so unambiguous that ANY law restricting an American’s right to own, carry or use a firearm is unconstitutional. THE RIGHT OF THE PEOPLE TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED. It doesn’t say SHALL SOMETIMES NOT BE INFRINGED. ALL LAWS RESTRICTING GUNS ARE UNCONSTITUTIONAL. The problem with our country is that we no longer value liberty. We should imprison ANY person who votes to take another persons liberty away. The article that TIME_2_STOP_LYING provides has not one direct quote from Paul ever stating such an absurd thing. That is a lie promoted by his opponents. IN FACT, Paul has stated that the TEA party was a movement begun BY THE PEOPLE. The TEA party began under Bush’s second term when he began passing laws expanding the powers of federal Government (TSA, DHS, etc) and bailing out businesses “too big to fail”. The TEA party was actually heavily maligned by the Marxist MSM during this period as racists, conspiracy theorists, anti-Semites, and crazies. IBy the time Obama was elected, and the Healthcare law was passed, the movement had grown in size and influence. It was a true grassroots movement with no leader, but only the spirit of liberty and genuine sense of patriotism leading the way. At this time, many more joined and felt the necessity to unite as one nation, one people, and to vote out as many corrupt politicians out, including icmbent R‘s and D’s. The party was made up of patriotic Americans from many backgrounds (Conservatives, Blue Dog Democrats, Republicans, Constitutionalists, Disgruntled Democrats, Libertarians, Independents, etc). This unity helped the GOP win the majority in 2010 for the House of Representatives.

Paul campaign (that’s grassroots for the slower ones) STARTED the modern day Tea Party in 2007.

That‘s why he’s frequently called the “Godfather of the Tea Party.”

TIME_2_FINALLY_COMPLETE_HOOKED_ON_PHONICS is so darn indoctrinated into his own thinking that he can’t remotely understand that his assertions are based on complete lies. At no point in time has Paul himself ever claimed to have began the TEA party. TIME_2_END_HIS_DELUDED_FANTASY is just troubled by the fact that patriotic Americans were finally fed up with all politicians and able to trigger a real grassroots movement not in covenant with any political establishment.
TIME_2_END_HIS_WILD_ALLEGATIONS can’t contemplate the idea of Americans uniting for freedom and patriotism if such a movement was not led by the GOP establishment. TIME_2_STOP_WORSHIPING_THE_ELITES would rather see America divided and in ruin if all voters are not aligned to one single belief system. TIME_2_STOP_BEING_A_COMMIE can’t understand that only in North Korea and Cuba are citizens and politicians practically required to promote and advance the exact same things, with no differing beliefs or opinions. His attempt at labeling us patriotic Americans and Republican supporters of Paul’s candidacy is a shame, and an insult to our free and open elections. The only treasonous and seditious persons here are those who would lie, exaggerate and distort the truth in order to just advance an agenda contrary to the most organic and fundamental laws in our country. We’re the land of the free and home of the brave. Cowards and talebearers for the Establishment do not speak for us.

Again people need to remember when you have a legislature whose composition is 85% liberal who can veto anything you push their way…the legislation produced will not be conservative legislation.

If I feel the need to protect my family with a full automatic machine gun I should be able to do so. The police are armed to the teeth now, why is that? Because the criminals have those type guns. @Richard, No, I don’t have a problem with assault weapons. I don’t want to live in anarchy, just within the confines of the Constitution. Besides, the 2nd isn’t the only amendment Romney has come out against now, is it?

Face it. If Obama wins, it will be the last election this country has. Well, maybe we’ll get some like they have in Cuba and Venezuela. Say, doesn’t N. Korea have some elections too?

During the founding of this nation, the citizens owned the same type of arms the military owned. In fact, some cannons used during the war were from private parties, including rifles, and other artillery. Even during the Civil War, that was the case. Second of all, most assault weapons ban legislation is pure BS. They aim to ban “machine guns” and make it illegal to own AR-15′s that are really just semi-automatics.

He is no different than the rest, its only going to get worse no matter who gets elected ! It wont get better until it all falls apart and we can reset the country. Hopefully there are enough of us left.

There would need to be a structure (like scaffolding) to fall into. Have we built that? have they? what do you see the outcome being?
We could have had such a structure…but what do i know. I’m just a Housewife. Oh well, get ready to live with your choices folks!

I can’t believe Romney advocated for a FEDERAL REGISTRY for ballistic fingerprints. What the heck!? The last thing I want is for some bureaucrat to know how many guns I own, where I live, and which kind I have. That is unacceptable. Just look at what happened after Katrina in New Orleans:

He is not moderate and most certainly has NOT “consistently defended the Second Amendment”. He supported the Federal “assault weapons ban” and implemented a permanent version on his own constituents in MA. This does not, can not, square with the Second Amendment. And then there’s “RomneyCare”. And then there’s a million other things. Our collective willingness to vote for the “lesser of two evils” is why we get candidates like this. Romney or Obama? Who cares. Same guy. And if call yourself a conservative or claim to care about the Constitution and vote for this loser, you’re just ensuring we get more like him in the future and continue to go the wrong way.

And you all are going to vote for him like good little sheep.

Romney is a complete wildcard. He’ll either govern center left, or end up to the left of Obama. Don’t believe me? Read about the election vs. Kennedy, and how Romney repeatedly went LEFT of him.

Well, Obama is not a wildcard…he‘s already shown he’ll govern from the far left.

Beat Obama, that’s all that matters. A moderate president I’ll take over Obama.

I’ll be voting Romney and working hard to get as many conservatives in the House and Senate as possible.

Equaljustice, It is that type of thinking that has gotten us to this point and time in history where we may lose everything. They have stomped on our 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, 10th amendment rights, put Romney in and we will see our 2nd amendment rights stomped on, ENDGAME.

ANY candidate will do this time around. WE JUST NEED TO DEFEAT Obama. After that we can be more demanding of our candidate. I’ve said all along that I would vote for ANYONE BUT OBAMA, even if it were a Democrat and I’m sticking with that!

Thank you! Finally, someone said it! ( Besides me, of course.) I have been amazed and fascinated with this whole campaign. It’s as if the media has steered this fight from the beginning. From the vilification of Herman Cain to the non mention of Ron Paul, we are left with the likes (I use that term lightly) of Mitt Romney to go against O’Bama. With his tendency to flip flop on issues and his personality of tighty whitey, I fear that Romney is going to fall flat on his face. I may be wrong but that’s the way I see it.

      @Equal
people like you are the reason we keep getting these terrible candidates. Did you vote in the primary? i hope not, because you yourself said that you dont care who it is. Since people like you dont care – then you should have to live with the candidate WE (the people who care) pick.

I will not vote for romney because I dont want my kids to have to make these same idiotic decisions that we are forced to today

@EqualJustice – I can’t stand your stupid comments. IT IS NOT ANYBODY BUT OBAMA. In 2008 it was anybody but Obama but you idiots didn’t listen. I will never go with that brainwashing technique ever again. I will make my own choice who I like as President. Not who you or the establishment prefer. ITS WHO I PREFER!
