This Is the Audio From Cain‘s ’Reassessment’ Phone Call

Audio has been released from a story we brought you yesterday of a call between Herman Cain and his senior staff over a new allegation against him and next steps. He says the claim of a 13-year affair from a woman he had thought was a friend, along with the other allegations, has taken an “emotional toll” and is cause for “reassessment:”

But just what does Cain mean about reassessment? After delivering a speech at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Mich., last night, Cain gave an interview to the college newspaper — The Collegian — and confirms, as his spokesman said yesterday, that he is staying in the race. By reassessment, Cain did not mean he was evaluating whether to run or not.

Here’s what he said to The Collegian:

“There’s another option,” he said. “Modify the strategy, modify the campaign. Stay in, but with a modified strategy given everything that’s going on.”

In this context, he said that might mean considering a change in campaign emphasis.

“We have had an early state strategy and a national strategy going on simultaneously,” he said. “But because of all the controversy, we are reconsidering. Do we do both?”

“That’s the reassessment that we are doing — reassessing the strategy.”

The Collegian reports that Cain did not speak of the allegations during his Tuesday night address, but focused on national security and foreign relations:

[...] Cain said there was a simple reason for the omission.

“I’m done with the allegations,” Cain said. “The allegations have been made, I denied them — three times.”

Cain is married and has two adult children. He said that continuing to respond to the allegations distracted from his larger purpose.

“I’m not going to get into that because that gets me off message,” he said. “I’m going to let my crisis management person answer those questions. And my attorney.”

Yesterday, fellow Republican presidential candidate Jon Huntsman also said he finds the allegations against Cain as distracting from “issues pertinent to this campaign” as a whole. Huntsman took Cain’s call for reassessment of his campaign as a sign that he was reassessing candidacy.

    I just saw Cavuto’s interview. Herman said that they are attempting to get copies of the “proof” from Ms. White. (Phone calls texts etc.) I think Mr. Cain can stop this dead in it’s tracks, why doesn’t Mr. Cain divulge his phone records and texts. If they are innocuous then he can turn this to his advantage. I can’t be the only one thinking this. If his campaign had corroborating facts that disprove her claims, then why don’t they release it?

    I am still waiting for proof so I can move on, inocent until proven guilty. I am expecting there to be some kind of proof. But Ron Paul is looking hopeful.

    In this Radical Media Circus, any politician who has had relationships with women in their past whether platonic or sexual, will be exposed. You had better be Stellar Clean… I don’t think reasessing the Bimbo problem is going to solve anything for Herman Cain. I can understand a minister helping someone who is down and out, but isn’t Ginger White very ungrateful to accuse him of having an affair…Obviously not a friend…What kind of people you help and associate with can come back to haunt you.

    Drop the 9999 plan, go back in time and don’t support TARP, figure out what it means to be pro life, pay attention to what has been happening overseas for the past 50 years, and learn real economics. If Cain does these things maybe people will reassess whether they support him.

      If he keeps trying to ‘ride the train’, he’s going to “reassess” himself back to being single and delivering Domino’s Pizzas for a living.

      On September 1, 2008, Cain wrote an op-ed saying how terrific the economy was and that there was no need to fear a recession. In the subsequent two weeks, the following took place:

      – Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were taken over by the U.S. government (Sept. 7);
      – Merrill Lynch was sold to Bank of America;
      – Lehman Brothers declared bankruptcy;
      – The Fed bailed out AIG;
      – Washington Mutual was sold to JP MorganChase;
      – Treasury Secretary Paulson said the economy was so bad that $700 billion must be spent on bailouts immediately; otherwise, warned Ben Bernanke, “we may not have an economy on Monday.”

      Disaster was staring us in the face, and Cain couldn’t even comprehend what was going on. Even Warren Buffet admits that he is a horrible economist. Being a good businessman doesn’t mean you know about economics, it means you are good at running a business. Herman Cain is also quoted as saying that anyone who doesn’t support TARP is “economically illiterate.”

      He also thinks that Alan Greenspan was the best Fed Chairman we’ve ever had. Romney is another example of a great businessman who is weak on economics.
