This Is the Incredible Soccer Goal That Snapped Canada’s 24-Year Losing Streak

Going into last night’s match against England, Canada’s under-17 soccer team (U-17) had been on a 24-year, 13-match losing streak at the U-17 World Cup. So when the team’s goalie, yes goalie, ripped off a shot from beyond midfield and bounced it into the net, you can imaging the country and the team went nuts:
“I was just trying to get it on [teammate] Sadi Jalali’s head,” goalkeeper Quillian Roberts told the Canadian Press . “It just look a lucky bounce and went over the goalie.”
To be clear, Canada didn’t win the game. Instead, the team forced a draw. But when you’ve been outscored 45-3 in the last 24 years, a draw is as good as victory.
“I feel really proud of the boys. They went out and gave a great effort, never gave up,” Canadian coach Sean Fleming told the Press. “England is a great side. Sometimes we were under pressure, we bent but we did not break. I’m delighted with the resolve and character of our players.”

Posted on June 23, 2011 at 5:36pmSoccer is one of the most grueling as fas as endurance goes, but lets face it–most of the players are small cats–the rules regarding contact make it boring to watch. Keep an eye out for Rugby–making a comeback in the 2016 Olympic games. It is the most exciting game to play and watch–no other sport comes close IMHO. It will be mocked for a while because Americans don‘t understand it and we don’t do well in international play, but if you take the time to figure it out, you will not be disappointed.

Posted on June 23, 2011 at 3:58pmThis is why soccer blows. They’re willing to settle for a tie rather than determining an actual winner. According to Hank Hill, soccer was a sport invented in England by the women who were bored while their husbands did all the house work. Nice kick , though.

Posted on June 23, 2011 at 3:20pmIt’s like the Oakland Raiders making it to the Superbowl and getting a touchdown! Football (soccer to the ignorant) is much more exciting overall to me, the best game I saw ended in 0-0. Awesome playing by the teams, especially the goal keepers.

Posted on June 23, 2011 at 3:45pmOr you could have been enjoying a few of the 12 minutes of action in American football over a 3 hour game, or that brilliantly boring game of baseball. Why do we look down our noses at soccer and call it boring when the sports we seem to love are equally boring and way more complicated?

Posted on June 23, 2011 at 4:53pmHey Saranda, ever try to hit a 98 mph fastball thrown from 60 feet 6 inches away? Ever try to hit a 76 mph curveball thrown right after the 98 mph fastball? Maybe try to stop a short-hop line drive or reach over an 8 foot fence to catch what would be a home run? As far as football, I won’t even bother because, and I’m sorry to all my female friends, if you haven‘t been in the middle of the line when the ball is snapped you really can’t comprehend the difficulty or chaos that goes on during those 12 minutes….if it was any longer, players wouldn’t survive a season! ;-)

Posted on June 23, 2011 at 5:40pmHa-ha … Normally I get aggravated when people put down soccer because it seems about as pointless as someone putting down professional chess players. Yeah, mock the intelligence and athleticism needed to be a soccer player at any level. Makes you look SO cool (and so stupid to boot).
But this comment made my day.

Posted on June 23, 2011 at 8:51pm@BRAD WESSELMANN – did I say anything about them not being athletes. I said that baseball and football were at least as boring to watch as soccer. These games must have been invented by people with very short attention spans as there is no sustained action in either sport. If you really want to watch a sport with great athletes and great ongoing action try hockey, but most americans complain that they can’t follow the action due to the speed and the puck moves too fast. Duh, that is the point. Baseball is at best a pastime and football is just plain boring.
