This is What Ejecting Out of a 600 MPH Jet Looks Like

Ever wonder what it looks like when a pilot ejects from a jet going 600 mph? You’re right, I never did either. But when I saw the headline for this video, I had to click — and I’m glad I did.
The video was made by BAE Systems, which developed the eject mechanism to be used in the new F-35 Lightning II stealth fighter jet. It shows a mock cockpit traveling down a track at 600 mph and a “pilot” shooting through the top. You’ll probably watch it a couple times:
The Daily Mail published some pictures showing what the test looked like from the side:
The F-35 is currently under development and would be the next state-of-the-art fighter in the U.S. fleet. One version can even “hover”:
You can read more about the plane from its developer, Lockheed Martin, here.

Posted on April 7, 2011 at 8:10pmIn “Top Gun” they were in a flat spin so there would be no slip stream for the canopy to get caught in.It would be possible then to hit the canopy during ejection.

Posted on April 7, 2011 at 7:54pmObama will wreck our military just like Clinton did. We haven’t had a major weapons change since Reagan. The F-22….there is only about 120 of them. The F-35 is not out yet and NATO gets many of them. We have a police force military and cannot fight a world war. The Commies know this and are racing to overtake us.

Posted on April 7, 2011 at 5:51pmOur problem is will anyone step up to the plate that can turn this country around? The pool of “conservatives” considering presidential runs are no Ronald Reagans and we need someone with that type of leadership and backbone to straighten out the giant mess Obama is creating. Any takers?

Posted on April 7, 2011 at 5:50pmOne of the best Nova (PBS) episodes ever was about the development of the F-35. Impressive how all the engineering came together. And the military tried to do its job, but I think politics gets caught up in everything.

The main thing of concern with the military I am worried about is him just abandoning them over in the middle east. He needs a reason to break the military, as they are the last bastion of hope that he does not fully control; a worse case scenario I can envision would be the collapse of nations about the area of Iraq, and the troops need to do a ‘miracle of Dunkirk” situation, perhaps even against direct orders of the POTUS, and there would be his excuse to deal with them.
The resulting chaos here at home would also create even more of the up-down-inside out pressures he and his cronies are looking for as well; the excuse or situation they need to crack down across the board.

Posted on April 7, 2011 at 6:49pmThe way Goose met his maker was Pure Hollywood! I was a Jet Mech on the F-14 Tomcat and I can tell you for a fact that when you eject from a fast moving jet the conopy blows off and is long gone in the airstream before either seat leaves the jet. The rear seat goes first(which the movie got right) followed by the pilot. If the pilot went first the rocket on his seat would cook the RIO sitting behind him! Informed the Blaze staff of this happening awhile back; the communist party of Iraq is also on the move in Baghdad and the political machinery to position themselves for a move when the Americans leave – if we ever do so. Note, they may not take control in the next Iraqi elections, they can gain a good deal of postion.

Posted on April 7, 2011 at 8:03pmBut, Goose and Maverick were in a flat spin at the time they ejected. Maybe they were facing the wrong way when the canopy blasted off. I’m not a pilot or a mechanic, but I do watch a lot of movies with plots that require the suspension of all logic and reason. Just sayin…

Posted on April 7, 2011 at 9:29pmdealing with “goose” in top gun, the portrayal there and something that quite often happens is that the planes canopy to not properly separate from aircraft before the ejection seat slammed into it. That definitely was a mild portrayal, I’ve seen circumstances where canopies never separate from the aircraft then the pilot and the ejection seat are pitch completely through! not every ejection works the way it should.
