This Is What Happened When the BBC Confronted a ‘Brutal, Bigoted’ Facebook Troll

There’s a sense of anonymity on the Internet — a quickly disappearing condition — that has some users feeling like they can say anything to anyone without consequences. One person in Britain, considered a “Facebook troll,” has written things that CNET calls “brutal, bigoted, and sometimes racist.” And now he’s been hunted down and confronted about them.
Trolls such as this often get away with their antics, but not any more. The BBC tracked down a man who goes by Nimrod Severen — legal name is Darren Burton who lives in Wales — who has said things on Facebook like “rot in piss” — a play on “rest in peace” — on a deceased person’s Facebook page and has also used the n-word against some. BBC says that Burton seems to prey on tribute sights for deceased individuals.
BBC’s main goal was to ask Burton “why?“ ”How does he justify the trolling that he does?”
As BBC points out, some of his comments might be considered so racist that they are against the law — in Britain (which has much stricter free speech rules). When asking Burton what he thinks of the people behind the pages he offends, he responds “F*** ‘em”. Even as Burton gets on a city bus, BBC‘s Declan Lawn doesn’t give up, continuing to ask questions, which bring Burton to the door.

CNET has more on the sentiment that Facebook and other social media sites are an open forum for users to say anything:
“Facebook is an open forum,” he insisted. He also believes that the courts wouldn’t punish him, in his eyes, severely.
Referring to a previous case, in which time served was very short, he said, contemptuously: “Nine weeks? Nine weeks in jail? What’s that?”
Somehow, people have come to believe that the Web is a place where everything can be said. Some companies appear to foster the notion.
For example, when Facebook was reluctant to take down Holocaust denial pages, the company’s reasoning was: “The bottom line is that, of course, we abhor Nazi ideals and find Holocaust denial repulsive and ignorant. However, we believe people have a right to discuss these ideas and we want Facebook to be a place where ideas, even controversial ideas, can be discussed.”
In another part of the episode “Hunting Internet Bullies”, BBC also speaks to a rising pop singer in the U.K., Cher Lloyd, who has received racist comments and physical threats through social media, which has made her “very scared.” BBC reports that a charity called Beat Bullying released a study recently that found 28 percent of 11- to 16-year-olds have been victim to cyber bullying.

I don’t think Dr. Duke hates Jews. He’s just fearful of them given their history and so too am I.
Why does that bother you so much? I do not have to hate anyone in order to be concerned over their actions. I do not hate Jews nor do I hate blacks. I have legitimate concerns in my opinion.
I do not hate Roman Catholics but if I saw an attempt at hegemony by them in this country as they have done in past times in other nations, then I’d be screaming bloody murder just like I do over a perceived attempt of Jewish hegemony in the US.

Instead of your usual uninformative posts about Dr. Paul, why not point out what you dont like about his policies. Many of the pro-Paul people here clearly state why they are supporting him. The attackers like yourself talk about old letters and his supporters as reason not to like him. Is that really what is important? Our country is facing crushing debt, worsening unemployment, out of control spending, and it seems two new wars on the horizon. Please explain in detail who you are supporting and how they will fix these issues. Ron Paul has a plan for these problems. Its very clear and one from the founding fathers.

Let’s be candid about the topic here America. The reason they don’t have free speech in Europe is because XXXx can’t stand the thought of someone questioning their right to Supremacy. It has been fun posting with you fine conservatives, and even debating you liberals, but I will soon lose internet as a result.
Who knows, this may be a blessing to me.

Suppose I ran a hospital and I didn’t want to perform abortions? Am I entitled to not murder babies because it is my personal belief? Your gov‘t is currently saying that you don’t have that right.

Oh I wholeheartedly agree with that comment but I think that the maggots would be those who struck out at the spirit of the 1st amenment of the US Constitution. Afterall only a maggot would want to put a lid upon free speech and suppress thoughts right?
Do you know that there are maggots in Europe that will not even allow History to be discussed or debated without threatening some with certain views with Jail time? I try to keep my chin up about it and not whine like many Paul groupies.
As far as “others” complaining about what I post. They are free to ignore just like you. Chances are, “most” of the whiners/complainers are Paul supporters.

I’ve not watched the videos yet but I will.
My eyes were initially opened to that fact about 5 or 6 years ago after purchasing videos from the History Channel. I ordered a dvd on the Crusades, Early Christianity, and Islam. I was so stunned by what I witnessed (actually I ejected the one on Early Christianity after about 15 min) that I began researching the Producers and lo behold… You guessed it.
You can order the videos yourself today but you can imagine how it goes can’t you? Sure you can. So I had to struggle with that question you posed or I should say statement… but it‘s true and if you think about it a little it’s sort of easy to figure it out.

There is no excuse, and that’s exactly the reason why I do have something to offer in discussions with people who live in the great democratic experiment of America. America now has it’s own empire and you need to be careful. We gave ours back a long time ago.
The problems Americans have in general (not all) is that you are all too insular. I doubt many of you would go and read comments on a site like crooks and liars, for example.

I eventually linked a real name and address to him. No hacking involved. Everything I looked at was freely accessible information. Needless to say his trolling days were over on that board.

You are out there spew innaccuracies about Constitutionalists saying we are drug users and liberals and its not true. I haven‘t SEEN an illegal drug in more than 20 years and I don’t know any Paul supporters that use. Most of us are the 15% of conservatives SERIOUS about cutting spending, balancing the budget, getting out of the UN and reforming the monetary system.
I don’t go around accusing all Gingrich supporters of being thugs based on the actions of what some of his people did recently and keep in mind in was the Paul campaign that got one of their windows smashed out a few weeks back.
