This is What Happens When You Get Into a Fight With a Police Officer & Try to Steal His Gun

Barike Wiltz, a parolee, was violently arrested in Stockton, CA, Tuesday after he got into a fight with a police officer and tried to take his gun.

The entire episode started when an allegedly intoxicated and belligerent Wiltz got into a scuffle with a Stockton policeman. While the officer had him in what looks like a headlock, Wiltz made a grab for the officer’s gun.

This is What Happens When You Get Into a Fight With Police Officer & Try to Steal His GunAmateur footage taken by a bystander.

Wiltz soon gave up and fled the scene of the fight. However, he’d already made a serious mistake and the Stockton police were not ready to let it go. They quickly caught up with Wiltz, beat him with batons, and arrested him. Oddly enough, a news crew was on the scene shooting an unrelated interview and caught the takedown on tape.

Watch the takedown via Detroit Free Press:

This is how the story played out:

This is What Happens When You Get Into a Fight With Police Officer & Try to Steal His GunA woman was giving the news crew an interview . . .

This is What Happens When You Get Into a Fight With Police Officer & Try to Steal His GunSirens start going off and police vehicles go tearing by.

Suddenly, Wiltz rounds the corner and is quickly run down by a Stockton police officer.

This is What Happens When You Get Into a Fight With Police Officer & Try to Steal His GunIn no time, the police officer knocks the suspect back on to the sidewalk, administers a few painful blows with his baton, and makes the arrest.

This is What Happens When You Get Into a Fight With Police Officer & Try to Steal His GunSome the local residents who witnessed the takedown think the Stockton police were disproportionately violent.

“I thought it looked like Rodney King being beaten, it seemed like it was too much,” witness Trevon Edwards told ABC News 10.

But the police stand by their actions.

“The suspect grabbed the officer’s gun and tried to pull it out of the holster, because of that, we used any force necessary to stop the suspect and make an arrest,” Det. Joe Silva said.

Wiltz, 34, is currently being held in San Joaquin County Jail on charges of fighting with police and trying to grab an officer’s weapon, according to ABC News 10.

All that stick work was aimed at muscles that if spasmed would drop the suspect to the ground! The total focus was in dropping him to the ground and forcing his submission to arrest–NOT trying to beat him in revenge! I thought the police officer was rather talented and controlled in his use of the stick–no head shots and no shots to thin bone structures like the wrist or complex structures like the ankle! The suspect is lucky to come out with a bunch of bruises and not a pile of broken bones! What on Earth would possess someone to make a grab for an officer’s service weapon? As for the taser remark–you only get one shot, and it better be accurate. Maybe the police officers didn’t have a taser handy! These people have a good, well-trained police department! They should be thankful for those willing to serve!

      Right on!
You can hear the officer yelling “get on the ground” & the guy is not complying. He is still trying to get away.
That was good baton work. I used be a cop. Any person who tried to get a hold of an officers gun is going to be considered a threat until they are in custody.

SALAM-ER You’re on target with your comments, MARINE I also understand the pain inflected on hitting joints, but our training is to NOT to hit joints, thin skin or the head.

Mr. Wiltz, First pull you pants up! Your grown man, act like one. In the future comply with law enforcement and never reach for a weapon of an officer.

All you armchair commando, this might be a good time to exercise your right to remain silent. Until you have had to fight for your life you will never understand what is going thru your mind in these situations. Comparing this to Rodney King shows that you have lived in “sunny California” too long. There are people in our society that will always break the law and that’s why law enforcement officers.

Notice also that the instant he was on the ground and threw up his hands in submission the cops stopped with the batons. If Salamander is correct, then the cops look to not only have their own welfare in account, but the general public as well as the suspect. They could very well have shot him.

Salamander is 100% correct. As a LE person myself I applaud this officer for his use of restraint. You can see at one point in the video as the suspect backs away towards the sidewalk, the officer holds back a blow that would’ve hit an arm or possibly a head. This is the kind of compliance training every cop receives and this officer did what he has been trained to do.

This in no way was even close to a Rodney King episode. As was observed, the focus was on muscle to get the suspect to comply. Some suspects are so juiced up that they don’t often respond immediately the same way a sober person might respond. No violations here. Anybody that thinks different, I would like to see you in the same situation. Easy to be a Monday morning QT.

Absolutely right! All the blows with the baton were delivered to the suspects leg. you can even see where the officer holds back one moment because he’s unsure where the next blow will land. In other words, the officer was obviously trying to avoid hitting the man in the head or in the torso which are areas of the body that he knows he is not supposed to hit or try to hit. The legs are what an officer is trained to hit for a take down. The hits to his arms at the end are also legal … I had that training in the NG. The officer’s arrest in this case is absolutely defensible and legal.

Other jurisdictions may be different but many no longer teach ‘bony’ contact points but rather soft tissue. And correctly commented, it does take a “long time” to bring those points into submission. I did not see a taser on that officer’s belt so… how can he use it? I see that two minority members spoke out against the “minority” member police officer? Frankly I think all law enforcement should let “minority” communities police themselves and perhaps you would see less of this garbage about “Rodney” and more about lawful behavior leading to a reasonably “polite society.” Wonder what those loons would have said if the cop’s gun had been taken and used against the officer? Nothing, that’s what. People function out of (according to psychologists) “love” or “fear” and drunken assailants only love their brew, and only fear will bring their unlawful behavior into compliance. Go ahead and continue to allow minorities to ‘misbehave’ because there is a minority president and AG… see what it gets you!

Clearly police brutality and a racist hate crime.

    I’m kidding.

People have to keep in mind, if a criminal (or just a drunk jerk) is willing to fight a police officer, or try to take his weapon…this person is 100 times more dangerous to you or me.

That is why shooting or killing a cop is so offensive. It is NOT because “Oh, you hurt one of us so we are going to make your life hell!”, no…it is that they know that anyone doing this to an officer has gone the way of a mad dog and no longer has any scruples as to what they’ll do to an average citizen.

Police can longer afford to go up to a suspicious person and say “Hey, how ya doing? Nice breeze today, not to hot either…good day to go fishing I’d say. May I ask why you’re here on this bench on such a nice day like this?” If they pull this Andy Taylor crap, they’re going to get shot because the suspect will think they are a wimp and can be handled. Police today have no choice but to go into any situation with an aggressive attitude and a measure of intimidation tactics to set the suspect back on their heels.

“Protect and serve” does not mean letting the suspect draw/swing/shoot first and do your best to survive afterward.

Traffic stops are the most dangerous encounter for cops. It is were the most of them are injured or killed. They are not told by there buddies to do it, every law enforcement agency in the country trains them to be that way.

Have you ever even met a cop other than when your doing something wrong? Just stating “life and death, self-defense” in firing on cross-racial suspect is never justification to California public. Bystanders ALWAYS know better than cops.

Exactly! I worked 2 blocks from the police station which handled that call. RK, is a large dude who was speeding and weaving on the road and was not pulling over. After he did, he would not exit the car or keep his hands in view. When he did get out, he kept reaching back in and under the seat. He still would not respond to commands and then the taze had little to no effect on him. Keep in ,ind that this was going on during a time when several crimes and arrests made the news featuring near super human strength thanks to PCP.

Though I “wish” they would have deployed a dog or swarmed him with the amount of officers they had, I also realize that every officer that got with in range would have given him the opportunity to grab a weapon.

But the case has changed a lot of tactics used today…now he would have been shot the moment he reached back into his car.

After it all happened, the police station went on lockdown with the driveways and entrances barricaded, all wore vests, sharpshooters were on the roof. Police were there for days. I bought almost $500.00 of soda/juice/water/cookies/etc and my assistant and I delivered it to them along with a card expressing our appreciation for them signed by 18 of our employees.

At first I thought we were going to get shot when we pulled up and got out to get the stuff out of my pickup bed, but when they realized what we were douing and why we were there…well, the looks on their faces were worth every penny and more.

When he said if he had a son he would look like Trayvon, everybody got on the side of the blacks. Obama is trying to destroy America. He shows contempt for the Constitution. Its hilarious to me (the accusations of racism by TP members), since I attend TP meetings regularly and see all the “whiteheads” in attendance who drove there in their Buick Century’s. Yea, they are a real violent group…NOT!

Wiltz allowed his lifestyle to fall in line with the predominant stereotype that is conjured up when people see others with their pants below their butt. Reaching for the officer’s firearm indicates that he may have a propensity for violence and that he needed to be taken down by any means necessary. Treat an Officer with the respect that he.she deserves, and that respect will be returned. I had occasion to have a very light run in with the local police, and I asked them if I could follow them to the Public Safety Building in order to be processed for a minor incident. The officer had NEVER, in 13 years on the job, had anyone ask that of him. Because I respected him, was sober, and exceptionally cooperative, and polite, he agreed. It went without a hitch, I was fully cooperative at all times, and when he turned me over to the officers inside, he even wished me a speedy and safe night. He gave me his business card in case I had a problem. I was processed quickly and politely, finished my business, and called the original officer to that him for his professionalism and his courtesy. He said, :No, Thank You, Mr XXXXXXX. It’s not often we have such courteous folks to deal with in an event like your. It was refreshing to be able to have what I consider to be a safe event. I hope things work out for you.” Imagine that, a police officer thanking someone he HAD to arrest. FWIW, the judicial process ran it’s course, and my ‘record’ has been expunged.

He was sitting and enjoying a Steel Reserve. Why did the cops have to bother him in the first place? When he was running,he had no gun. When he lay down and was beaten,he had no gun.I do not care if he pulled out his Wacky Weasel and pee’ed on the cops leg, when he was getting beaten,he had no gun.

Hey Stupid – Drinking in public is illegal. Instead of arresting him – they told him to leave. I know…I know….Police “Harassment”. God forbid they try and keep nice places staying nice for families. And if you somewhat understood a Use of Force Continuum – you would understand that each time he was struck, it was after a verbal command to “Get on the ground” or “Turn over” or “Put your hands behind your back”. Non-compliance =’s applied force.
That’s the problem nowadays – everybody thinks they know everything about everything when sometimes it’s just time to STFU and learn about something before you comment about it.

By your logic we shouldn’t arrest people for murder unless they still have the murder weapon on them. Brilliant, I hope you will be on my jury someday!

Here we go……….. Another piece of trash, drinking in public, with no job, most likely collecting government checks – fights police, tries to grab one of their guns, gets caught – and now the arrest is “excessive”. You hear that one guy???… The police should have tried to “talk to him”. WTF????? The girl says “They should have tased him”. If the police would have tased him – that would have been excessive. If the thug got the gun and killed some by-standers – the cry would have been “Where were the police?” And if an officer got killed – the cry would have been ‘What a tragedy!” by the same damn people. In no way shape, form, or fashion can police ever win these days. I say GREAT JOB, SPD!!!!!!!!!

If not for the bystander filming the initial incident, our race baiter in chief Obama would undoubtedly be having Holder pressing charges against these officers already. And I have no doubt that the good Rev Al was already making airline reservations to lead a racist mob against the Stockton Police.

Well I have to ask, why was the officer asking the man to leave. He was of age to be drinking, was he causing a problem? If so and the man became a problem, why did he not call for back up and wait for it. Seems to me the officer put himself, the drunk, and the public in harms way.

If you look at the film where the officer first encounters the suspect you see he had in his possession beer. In most townships, it is illegal to drink public, if you are drinking in public and are unable to leave the premises when asked because you are drunk then you are considered to be publicly intoxicated and are arrested. Add resisting arrest and attempted murder (grabbing for the gun) during the prior confrontation and running away and you get a beat down. White, black no matter what.

You can say it is excessive force, but in the end it was resisting arrest. Look at the lives Rodney King endangered as he drove away from the police while intoxicated. Luckily, no one was killed by Rodney, but the lesson no one seems to learn is never resist arrest. Going to jail isn’t the worst thing that can happen to you, if you are drunk.

I didnt say anything like that. The cop should have used his brain and not try to take on a guy one on one. Once the guy started to give problems call for back up. Wrestling with him endangered everyone at the scene.

Unnecessary Force? He would have shot the Police Officer if he had gotten the gun. Fighting with Police don’t turn out well no matter what your skin color is. Drunk or not you don’t fight Police Officers! And the Media should have started the Story from the beginning not with the bystander! Once again the Media has screwed up, because now you have Black’s referring to the Rodney King ordeal. Also this makes the Police look bad, pathetic reporting as usual! The man was resisting arrest and assaulted a Police Officer.

In the case of the suspect grabbing for the officers gun, then I can clearly understand them not holding back in the takedown; that grab for the firearm tells his intentions to do or attempt to do bodily harm to the officer and thus makes him dangerous across the board.

I will not fault the officers who made the decision; and if a investigation is conducted to determine if any fault in the officers conduct occured, then let the truth come out for good or bad.

That’s how the world first heard about “Reverend” Al Sharpton: Parading Twanna Brawley in front of the NYC press, claiming that two dozen (TWO DOZEN!) city cops raped this poor girl then smeared dog —- all over her and walked away.

Complete lie. No apology. Next victim.

A “reverend” of what? “reverend Al”

      yeah right.
