This Is What It Looks Like to Go 462 MPH

Video of Speed Demon Gives You a Look at 462 MPH

(Photo: Speed Demon)

The Speed Demon race car by George Poteet and Ron Main lives up to and even surpasses its name with its ultra-sleek design and MOPAR Hellfire ‘Lil’ Hemi 4 cylinder engine.

With your everyday car most likely topping out at 120 MPH, a speed of 462 MPH may seem unfathomable, but this video, shot in HD with a Replay XD1080 camera on default settings with no processing, can give you a taste. But first, Gizmodo has some suggestions to give you the best viewing experience:

It‘s definitely one of those clips you’ll want to switch to 1080P, go fullscreen, and turn up your speakers if you got ‘em. The sound of the motor screaming is like a symphony of horsepower, and the shots where the Speed Demon tears past the cameras on the salt flats will certainly make you wish your minivan was packing a little more oomph under the hood.

Here’s what 462 MPH looks like from almost every angle you could imagine:

Took the family to speed week last year. It was a great time. Every run over 300mph is very exciting to watch. The crowds were not big at all and getting a great spot to watch was not a problem. Lots of very cool rat rods and motorcycles to look at. Just make sure you bring lots to drink, some shade and a bike or some vehicle to cruise around on.

Interesting. But your average commercial airline beats it hands down AND can go in a straight line and will thus always be faster. And more comfortable. Plus the in-travel service is significantly better.

If he’d do it with a P-51, in the air, I’d be impressed. With a car, on the ground, not so much.

Sorry, guy, but the current record holder in the unlimited class (thrust powered) is the speed of sound at 763mph, set back in 1997! That’s about 300mph FASTER than your average commercial liner travels at 35K feet altitude. The North American Eagle’s goal is to hit 800mph in a year after our CFD & rear suspension modification is complete. (www.landspeed.com)

The “H” model of the Mustang could reach those speeds. But very few WWII fighters could actually go that fast in level flight. The “H” was post-WWII, and about the only ones who could get up to those speeds were developed much later in the war. The Spitfire with a Griffon engine (2000hp) could just about get there, and the “M” model P-47 could hit about 475 mph in level flight with a specially boosted R-2800 radial engine of some 2800 hp..otherwise you had to find a jet fighter.

Okay, everyone, this type of news is what continues to perpetuate (that’s keep up the notion, for those of you in Rio Linda) the idea that the unlimited class (thrust powered – as in jet engine) still runs for records at Bonneville’s Salt Flats. So, just to check if there are any of you out there in Blazeland, can anyone correctly state where this class of land speed records are set; what type of surface, as oppose to the only 7 miles of good salt surface, is it? P.S. The North American Eagle – a world land speed record challenger has been 400mph in testing so far, but that was only due to being limited to a four mile run course. (www.landspeed.com)

I had a friend once who drove dragsters. He said at top speed you still see every crack and bump.

Of course, I doubt you can move quick enough to do anything about them and even if so, you have to wonder if you’d wipe out from such a quick course change.

Personally, I wouldn;t mind going that fast in the air. On the ground it seems a little insane.

Mopar designed a engine for the USAC midgets at least 10 years ago with good success. In fact there are many still used both in drag racing and circle track. The USAC engine is normally aspirated and makes around 350 HP. Some of the “hero’ NASCAR drivers with their own USAC teams won a bunch of races with these motors..

So what? You ask. Because it is an engineering accomplishment and skill not to crash it. And it does take people with extra resources to get such things done. If people never tried pushing the envelope we would just be hunters and gatherers still. But maybe that is what the climate change people would like, or so they pretend to want. If they actually had to give up much of their modern conveniences they would probably make excuses why it isn’t contradictory.
