This Is What It Looks Like to Witness a Massive 100-Car Pileup

Warning, there is some graphic language in this video. But if you were witnessing a massive, 100-car pileup, you might say some of the same things.
What you’re about to see happened in Finland over the weekend, just outside Helsinki. A few guys were traveling down the road when they got caught in a snow storm. The roads got slick and they ended up in a snow bank. After exiting their vehicle, they realized not everyone was as lucky. And not only did they record the portion in their car, they also captured what happened as car after car slammed into the wreckage on the highway.
Car Scoop has more on what happened:
According to media reports, the Lahti [highway] incident involved around 100 vehicles of all kind of sizes and resulted in many injuries, but thankfully, no fatalities.
You can watch it below. But again, graphic warning for language applies:

Posted on February 8, 2012 at 12:38pmIt must be that the director/cinematographer’s prefers the 9×16 aspect ratio. Great for photographing the Christmas tree or skyscrapers… not so good for showing auto’s piling up.

Posted on February 8, 2012 at 2:01pmI had the very same thought. That’s one of my biggest pet peeves and it made the video annoying to watch. The first half of the video sucked too. Put the camera on the action.

Posted on February 9, 2012 at 9:12amI learned in driver’s education to never “overdrive your headlights”, meaning, never drive faster than you can see ahead of yourself. This would include heavy rains, dense fog, snowstorm, or even just bad headlights.

Posted on February 8, 2012 at 11:01amOkay, I read. It started snowing suddenly and visibility was limited, yet they continued driving fast. They passed cars on the side of the road, but it still did not occur to them to slow down? Men- clueless!
As I woman, I would think that was my first clue, snow falling, visibility falling, slow down, but hey that is just the logic in me. Just because I come to a “clear” patch, I must assume it won’t be that way all the way and remain. In fact, would not they be able to see low visibility coming on again?
This happens with male drivers her in Colorado all the time, plus the fact they get a false sense of superiority driving 4-wheel drive. They are the ones I see in the ditch, in the middle of a median, while the women drivers wave as they drive by. Don’t worry, help has already arrived or no one is injured.

Posted on February 8, 2012 at 11:20amI read the cameraman’s blog as you suggested after I watched the video. I did not see a “white-out” at all. What I saw were people driving too fast on a slick road. If you want to see a real white-out you need to come to NE Kansas during a blizzard. We had a bad one a couple years ago. My husband and I got caught in it driving home from work. We couldn’t see more than a few feet off the hood of our truck. Thankfully there were enough people smart enough to keep a very slow speed and there were only a few cars that slid off the road. It took three hours to drive 49 miles. We were in the blizzard the entire way. Slow down folks and be careful!

Report Post »Stupid drivers are not just men in 4 wheel drive vehicles. I‘ve see stupid women drive their SUV’s into high water over the roadway and become stranded and in danger of losing their lives and the lives of their children. Then rescue workers (usually MEN) have to risk their lives to save the stupid woman and her kids. BTW, I’m a woman.

Posted on February 8, 2012 at 3:43pm@Cofemale Really? You’re going to label all men as bad drivers because of this video??? My buddy who works for an insurance agency would show statistics that say otherwise.
