After the Labor Department released its “dismal” jobs report this morning, Business Insider thought it would be useful to revisit the following chart from from Bill McBride at Calculated Risk:
Wait a minute. What are we looking at here?
“What it shows is the trajectory of job losses and gains from the start of the recession and the ‘recovery’ compared to all other post-WWII job losses and recoveries,” Business Insider’s Joe Wiesenthal explains.
“As you can see, this collapse was totally unprecedented compared to past ones, and the recovery was far weaker than any others,” he adds.
But don’t worry, Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) says President Obama has helped turn this economy around.

Posted on June 1, 2012 at 4:47pmLook at the red 2007 line and then ask who just took control of Congress then. This shows the economy falling off a cliff when the democrats took control of Congress, and it also shows a lame “recovery” with Obama at the helm with full control of 3 branches of the Federal government. Democrats = fail.

Posted on June 1, 2012 at 5:28pmI hate to keep harping on this, but we’ve got problems heading our way as part of a series of falling dominoes. Spain has just reached the financial critical care unit, while Greece is still falling, as well as Italy…which will be the next to reach critical mass. Portugal, Ireland and the old Eastern bloc countries are as close to a depression as they can get without being globally recognized as a full-blown depression.
Many people think European debt problems do not affect us. But they do. The banking systems of the US and Europe are closely tied. As Europe goes, so goes the United States. Bank runs are beginning now, and bank runs are precursers to bank collapses, which are, in themselves, precursers to governmental bankruptcy, involving the cessation of most public sector jobs, pensions and a drastic reduction in active duty police and military.
The next step after that is chaos in the street.
I know I sound like a doom and gloomer, but I’m not exaggerating one iota. Check it out yourselves. You can start with http://www.trendresearch.com, Peter Schiff’s blog, Marc Faber (Who says the probabability of a second recession is100%.
Glenn keeps saying prepare….prepare….prepare….That’s really good advice.
It’s almost criminal the way the US press is ignoring the calamity now taking place throughout the European economies.

Posted on June 1, 2012 at 5:42pmEveryone knows that the liberal mindset can’t be changed. They know deep down that their ideas are ( let’s just say it) dumba$$ery of the highest order. Yet they can’t let “ the good of the country” get in the way of their power grabs. They know that when they came to power in 2007 that things would go down hill. Look at all the blue areas of the country. They all 100% suck.

Posted on June 1, 2012 at 7:22pmYep. liberals can ONLY do three things:
1. Over-regulate
2. Over tax
3. Over spend
As to independents post, I’ve been calling for this since 2006, and you are correct, so are those you mentioned. However, liberal progressive communists just shout them down as dumb, but in fact they are correct, we are headed for a world of HURT. If you’re not prepared now, do best you can to get there, time is running OUT….

Correct. People on this site don’t do the real research about our economy like where QE1, QE2, etc. really went, but make useless dispersions. With France now wholey socialist the Euro backing, LTRO and countries like Greece are in even more trouble. Germany will not do it alone. The EU and EB are just pushing the problem down the road. As we can see, attention is now turning to Spain. Greece is toast…it’s just when. Italy actually isn’t as bad as made out. The majority of Italians actually own there own homes and have tremendous family-stashed liquid assets. This is never talked about in the media but I talk to the people there often and they fell comfortable about their personal solvency. And barter is not an uncommon word to them. But if Europe goes, so do we, and it will be worse than the current collapse, and NO American politician and no infux of capital can mitigate it.
Another site you may like is zerohedge.com. A little heady for a lot of people but if you get thru that is does have a sense of humor.

Posted on June 2, 2012 at 1:32amThere is a storm approaching that is going to make everyones life a living heII for a while. It does not matter who is elected POTUS, it is coming. It has reached a point that there will be no turning back. What we have to ask ourselves is; What type of person do we want as Potus when this happens? Do we want Obama, who would certainly turn the keys over to the U.N., do we want Romney, who is backed by the same banksters that backed Obama/ Who is he going to be beholden to? I believe that I would rather have a person who truly, in his soul belives in the Constitution. Someone who will take their oath to protect and defend the Constitution, someone with the insight that we are going to need our troops here and not be spread so thin across the world when this storm is in full swing. What we do now, will have an impact on what our children and grandchildren will have to endure and take the blunt of. I want to see them have a future of freedom and not socialism or fascism.,

Posted on June 2, 2012 at 10:30am@ SPFOAM1, Yep, the Democrats took over Congress and tied Bush’s hands the last 2 years of his term. During that time when Obama wasn’t running for Prez, he sat in congress voting “Present” because he couldn’t make a decision of an up or down vote, and we‘ve seen him run this country down to it’s knees with his hope and change when there was no hope and certainly the only change was bad news that has kept us in a depression far too long. But he seems to like it so he can control us better.

Obama‘s term started in 2008 soooo I don’t exactly see where you’re going with this. By the time Obama took office (12 months in to the graph), job loss had already passed its steepest decline.
I understand that statistics are largely open to interpretation, but a graph is a graph… come on people. There are something you can blame “OBummer” for and some things you just can’t.
If you want to argue he could have done more to get us out of the recession that’s fine – I would agree with you, no one is perfect – but arguing he put us INTO the recession is just absurd.
If you want people to take your opinions seriously you need to start making sense (I’m not talking agreeable sense, I’m talking common sense).

Posted on June 2, 2012 at 3:27amI don’t get the misinformation we receive. Last year I heard our government declared the “Great Recession” lasted from May 14th, 2008 until July 21st, 2008 or a little over two months. We’ve also been told our economy is now going gang busters growing so much, but this chart shows the exact opposite. I also keep hearing if this isn‘t done or that isn’t done it will hurt our “economic recovery”-a recovery that I don’t see even exists.
However, based on how short the first recession was in ‘08, a double dip will only last a few hours-if it even happens at all. I predict the next recession to last only 7 hours max. Based on previous propaganda from the government.
The bottom line is there is no “recovery” going on like they claim. The recession of ‘08 is still alive and well and didn’t only last 9 weeks like the government says. The recession is still here and that’s why there is 8.x% unemployment still. There will not be a full recovery until people go back to work to produce things. Just tell all the millions of unemployed folks that the recession only lasted a few weeks back in 2008 and you’re liable to get punched. To them, there’s still a recession going on.

This trifling slow to climb ninety two percent employment is not good enough, especially when American productivity gains reach 112% year after year since 1990. Everybody getting a 12% per year raise? Well, frankly, some are!
On the other side of the coin, the debt causes us to borrow under a shadow of extraneous Interest. If we just paid 5 or 6 Trillion of our 2001-2007 bills, we would reduce the “borrowing “more than 65%
As a patriot, I believe in Fight As You Go! Put your taxes where your warfighters are.
As long as we pay for the Military and for fighting wars without borrowing from China, I think we can increase pentagon spending as much as America is willing to pay for.
If we had paid for the past 7 years by NOT cutting Taxes after we initiated the Iraq campaign, instead of financing with interest, the debt would be $5 trillion less and we would be paying 16 cents, not 44 cents on a borrowed dollar. The country has the assets, we are just too stingy to pay up.

@ Encinom
Explain to us how the GOP created 'an unconstitutional super majority requirement'? The GOP, last I checked, didn't create the filibuster in the last 10 years.
Oh, and a side point here… it was the election of Scott Brown to the late Ted Kennedy's vacant seat that broke the super majority the Democrats enjoyed in the Senate in 2010. Two years after holding onto both houses and passing a slew of bloated (and at least one unconstitutional) bills.
You can't tell me, and just about any rational person here, that the Repubs were standing in the way of the Democrats creating jobs all of those two years. Instead of concentrating on putting people to work (or better yet, getting out of the way for private entities to create jobs) the Democrat controlled Legislature and Executive branches were solely concentrated on the passage of the Affordable Care Act and related "grow the government" bills. Or sending 'bailout' money to unions to buy votes. Or increasing funding and dependance on 'food stamps'.
Get the drift?

In other words – it’s the economy. We can all sit here and debate war, peace, gay marriage, women’s rights, or whatever is “trending” that particular week…. but it all boils down to people working. If (normal) people aren‘t working then they aren’t happy.
While the Repubs are far from perfect, RINOs in particular, the Democrats completely ‘screwed the pooch’ (in a manner of speaking) in those two years. Had they shelved ‘obamacare’ for instance and concentrated solely on job growth (or as I said above, getting out of the way of job growth) the masses would be signing praises to the party for saving this great nation.
Instead…. they failed and now your beloved Democrats and (socialist) President is in real hot water with the voters.

BTW you’re really on a roll today! You’ve never sounded more incredibly stupid than you have on this thread! Good job! Keep beating your head against the wall. Yup. That might help.

Posted on June 2, 2012 at 3:17pmlet’s put the blame on the person who really deserves it for the housing bubble that started the financial crises, Mr. Democrat, I can’t keep it in my pants, Clinton. was Bush bad? yes, he was a MAJOR RHINO, and helped to increase our national debt quite a bit, however, he didn’t increase the debt to the point of no return like Obummer has. Let’s be honest, the last president worth his salt was Reagan, but Obummer has been the worst BY FAR! I hate Romney, but he still has my vote. hopefully in 4 years, a person who is actually worth a dam# will kick Romney out. we need a true Independent who doesn’t wear a tin foil hat. (sorry, love 95% of what Ron Paul says, but i just couldn’t ever vote for him)

Posted on June 1, 2012 at 3:54pmExactly what I would expect from a capitalist economy advancing through its stages of development–the more it centralizes wealth, which it has every internal incentive to do, the more it diminishes aggregate demand and the marginal propensity to spend, the less “use” it has for the many working class poor, who are increasingly irrelevant–the end result is inevitably a return to plutocratic feudalism based upon the control of power by an extremely small number of people who control (and there is a difference between CONTROL and OWN–one need not necessarily own something, de jure, to control it, de facto) all the wealth, instead of, as in the old feudalism, all the land.

When you have liberals like yourself successfully lobbying for lower lending standards and forcing the financials to give loans to people who normally shouldn‘t qualify for these loans you get a lot of bad paper on the books don’t you? In fact that bad paper is still there. So if you put together investment instruments that are founded in dodgy mortgages what do you think is going to happen?

Posted on June 1, 2012 at 7:40pmExcellent links. Thank You. You heard Maxine Waters talk about the affordable housing act of 1992. The housing bubble was long in the making, and there‘s little in even convoluted logic that can lay the blame solely at Bush’s feet. It was a problem that he inherited from the God of the Economy, Bill Clinton. Not to mention a little thing called 9/11, and the slow dismantling of the military that takes place under most Democratic Presidents, and constitutes an inherent problem for Republicans immediately upon taking office, everytime. Some people refuse to see that the blame Bush days are over. We have a socialist in charge and socialism will not work in a country bigger than Sweden. I keep hearing it‘s not just Obama’s failures, but also Romney’s abilities. Romney may turn out to be a screw-up, but Obama is a screw-up. Congress needs to retake their rightful place in this government. Reid needs to retire. The shutdown of the Senate is nothing less than criminal. Progressives on both sides need to be booted out of office, starting wiith the Commy in Chief. I’m sick of hearing people make fun of the Tea Party, and call them obstructionist. I hope someone would obstruct the petulent child setting fire to our country. One last thing. Why are the Blue states the crime riddled cess pools? Why are people fleeing them like rats from a sinking ship? Because democrats are like aliens, here to take everything and move on.

_______________
No, but the only way out is to spend. Jobs come from demand, when the private capital is being hoard by the few, its the duty of the Government to (a) release that capital and (b) create public works programs to infuse the system with new capital to create jobs. Austerity kills jobs and the economy.

Report Post »You don’t have a demand when consumer spending is so low. Why is consumer spending low? Because over 12 million Americans are unemployed or underemployed and the rest are cagey about spending more because they feel they could lose their jobs at any time.
Obama has presided over the largest underemployment rate since the second world war..and it’s growing. You don’t have any demand when people are reluctant to spend. You don’t try to create markets where there are none as Obama tried with this “green” agenda.

The free market will then rise up with new businesses created by the unemployed now. That is how you get America going again. Keep federal government out of our lives as much as possible, let us all do what we want ot do without the burden of all the fees and crap that come with government. Liberty is what we need.

Posted on June 2, 2012 at 7:17pm@Encinom You know it is most likely useless to try to reason with those people? It has been scientifically established (read for example that enlightening book “The Republican Brain” http://www.amazon.com/The-Republican-Brain-Science-Science/dp/1118094514) that conservatives are impervious to evidence and reason. Add to that constant Fox News-style propaganda and brainwashing and it is no wonder they are delighted at their future as slaves to the Koch bros and their ilk. I have fun reading Blaze comments as well but it is not a very productive use of time to try to address their “issues” (which, at root, is mostly a rejection of reality).
While I am commenting I can still throw them a bone. For all the conservatives who think they don’t need need any government, the following will probably be an eye opener:
