This Navy SEAL Sniper Is the ‘Deadliest in U.S. History’ — Can You Guess His Longest Shot?

Chris Kyle, Militarys Deadliest Sniper, Releases New Book: American Sniper | Longest Shot

Chris Kyle (via the NY Post)

Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle has the nickname “the legend.” It’s a title given to him by his fellow soldiers. And once you hear his story, you’ll understand why.

Kyle is the “deadliest in U.S. history,” the New York Post says. So how many kills have earned him that designation? Just 160. He details many of them — and many other stories — in his new book, “American Sniper,” which hits bookstores today.

For example, he recalled taking out seven insurgents in Fallujah around Thanksgiving 2004:

It’s November 2004. Thanksgiving time. The second battle of Fallujah has launched, and Kyle is swaddled in silence atop an upturned baby crib, studying the enemy through a Nightforce 4.5-22 power scope attached to a .300 Win Mag rifle.

He’s feeling badass.

“We just got word that the president of Iraq said that anyone left in the city is bad — meaning, clear to shoot,” he recalled for The Post. “From that point on, every fighting-age male was a target.”

That was just fine with Kyle, who spent five weeks in the hideout, protecting Marines on the ground and bagging seven confirmed kills — adding to his official total of 160, making him the deadliest sniper in US history.

“After the first kill, the others come easy. I don’t have to psych myself up, or do anything mentally — I look through the scope, get the target in the cross hairs and kill my enemy before he kills one of my people,” Kyle writes in his new autobiography [...] .

Chris Kyle, Militarys Deadliest Sniper, Releases New Book: American Sniper | Longest Shot

But that’s just the beginning. There’s also the story of his longest shot — a bullet he fired from over a mile away:

The son of a Sunday-school teacher and a church deacon, Kyle credits a higher authority for his longest kill.

From 2,100 yards away from a village just outside of Sadr City in 2008, he spied a man aiming a rocket launcher at an Army convoy and squeezed off one shot from his .338 Lapua Magnum rifle.

Dead. From more than a mile away.

“God blew that bullet and hit him,” he said.

Kyle, an obvious man of faith, also exudes the gritty, salty attitude of a war-hardened soldier. The north-central Texas native grew up “dipping tobacco, riding horses and hunting deer, turkey and quail,” the Post writes, and in his book he doesn’t hold back.

Chris Kyle, Militarys Deadliest Sniper, Releases New Book: American Sniper | Longest Shot

“You see us? We’re the people kicking your ass. Fear us, because we will kill you, motherf–ker,” he writes.

And he’s right. In fact, he has two Silver Stars and five Bronze Stars with valor to prove it. That explains why in Ramadi, insurgents put an $80,000 bounty on his head and dubbed him “Al-Shaitan Ramadi” — “The Devil of Ramadi.”

You can read more about Kyle, including what he’s doing now in the private sector, at the Post.

Banter: so your statement “who protect our freedoms around the world” what freedoms are you exactly talking about? The Patriot Act or National Defense and Authorization Act? Both of those acts are the total opposite of the freedom as you think. You’ve fallen for their propaganda. The Patriot Act that allows the government to spy on anyone and everyone and NDAA that lets the government declare you a “potential terrorist” for buying bulk food at Sams Club where you can disappear and never been be seen from again. Is that the “freedom” you’re talking about? Let’s just let this war go on for another 50 years so we can be even more free. Most people fall for propaganda catch phrases. In this case the phrase “who protect our freedoms around the world” is accepted by 90% of Americans without any thought as justification for an endless, money draining war.

If he made a shot over 1 mile with a .338 just think what he could do with a Barret 50 Cal. Gives a whole new meaning to “Reach out and touch someone”.

I’m not a firearms expert but I believe the 50 cal Barret isnt as inherently accurate as the 338 Lapua. I expect he is shooting the rifle/caliber that he shoots best. That said, I dont want him pointing the barrel of ANYTHING at me at ANY range!! :D

He’s a SEAL. They get to use anything they want and he could have chosen a Barrett. The Lapua is a more accurate system because of the specially designed bullet, and the hand held computing system that accompanies it. Actually it’s not “just” a rifle…it’s a firing system. The bullet, the rifle, and the computer make up the delivery system…the SEAL is the guidance mechanism.
The Barrett makes up for a lot because of the weight of the bullet, but the Lapua actually retains more muzzle velocity at distance. The shot he delivered on that baddie from a mile away actually had more kinetic energy when it arrived than a .357 fired at point blank range.

      It is a bad mo’fo.

Trebuchet I’m not knocking you. The Barret .50 is my favorite gun on the planet. But the .338 Lapua was designed to shoot farther than the .50. The Barret was beautiful because it to an existing round and added hella precision to it and a whopping stopping power. But mile long shots were unthinkable at the time. The Barret proving it could be done is what made the develop the Lapua .338. They designed the round specifically to go long range with accuracy and stopping power learning from the lessons that would not have been possible without the Barret. To the best of my knowledge the record longest confirmed sniper kill is 2,707 yds by CoH Craig Harrison, a sniper from the Household Cavalry of the British Army. He shot two stationary Taliban machine gunners south of Musa Qala in Helmand Province in Afghanistan with two consecutive shots using an Accuracy International L115A3 Long Range Rifle chambered in .338 Lapua Magnum

God bless each and every one of the Seals in their missions. The .408 CheyTac is no slouch either. Both are superior for snipers than a .50, but a Barrett still has its place. Carlos Hathcock had a couple phenomenal shots clear back in Vietnam, prior to these rounds, scopes and technology being developed or improved. Both the .338 and .408 allow the team member to shave a few pounds in carry weight, or add a few more rounds of firepower for the same weight as well. It is amazing to see the capabilities of the current systems and individuals.

Actually the 338 Lapua and the 416 are much better long range rounds than the 50 cal. which tends to fall flat on it’s face around 1500 meters. Thats not to say that the 50 cal isn’t still deadly evan at over a 1.5 miles‘ but it loses velocity much more quickly than either of the Lapuas’. It’s kind of a specialty market. The 50 cal raidly drops to around 1000 fps over 1500 meters while the 416 lapua is still burning down range at over 2100 fps with the 338 falling not far off from the 416. The 50 cal would still be my round of choice to take out a lightly armored vehicle , but the 338 and the 416 are better if the target you are engaging might be an unfriendly in body armour.

No offense sir, but you are wrong to an extent. I beleive you are thinking of the .408 Cheytac intervention. that was the rifle made with all of the cool gadgets as an extreme long range weapon. The .338 lapua is however an extremely accurate and powerful cartridge. the .408 cheytac was made as a median between the .338 and the 50 cal. the .408 cheytac is currently holding the record for longest shot at a man sized target. Anyhow, Snipers are awesome. God bless this man for his service.

here is a clip of an artcle.
Harrison reported it took about NINE shots for he and his spotter to initially range the target successfully. Then, he reported, his first shot “on target” was a killing shot. That makes the story more plausible.

In a stunning display of marksmanship, and the ultra-long-range capability of the .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge, a British sniper killed two Taliban machine-gunners at a confirmed range of 1.54 miles. The distance to the target was GPS-ranged at 8,120 feet or 2,706.6 yards — well over a mile and a half. According to Britain’s Times Online, this successful engagement was the longest ever: “The previous record for a sniper kill is 7,972 feet, set by a Canadian soldier [in Afghanistan] in March 2002.” (Canadian Cpl. Rob Furlong used a McMillan Tac 50 in his 2002 engagement.)

The 338 rules at this point in time.

Ballistics on the .338 Lapua are actually a bit better at distance. The .50 does have that nice satisfying thump when you hit a car though. The Army’s come up with a new term (which escapes me at the moment) for rifles capable of taking out light armor/vehicles, etc. and the .50 is definitely what you want for killing cars.

However, your frustration for not being thanked by those in uniform confuses me. Yes, tax money is solely what funds our military, but as previously stated, those in uniform pay taxes too. Also, its not like you went out of your way or suffered to pay your taxes, you simply did what you must do by law. So you didnt do anything above and beyond, you simply did what everyone did, including active duty military in paying your taxes. So what exactly did you do that was praiseworthy?

One of Hathcock‘s most famous accomplishments was shooting an enemy sniper through the enemy’s own scope, hitting him in the eye and killing him.[7] Hathcock and John Roland Burke, his spotter, were stalking the enemy sniper in the jungle near Hill 55, the firebase from which Hathcock was operating. The sniper had already killed several Marines and was believed to have been sent specifically to kill Hathcock.[6] When Hathcock saw a flash of light (light reflecting off the enemy sniper’s scope) in the bushes,[7] he fired at it, shooting through the scope and killing the sniper

I would not expect you to understand the difference between a soldier including invading ones, and a terrorist is that terrorists are weak dogs who can’t really fight their enemy so the go off killing civilians trying to win a media war instead of a real one. That is the difference that moral relativists can’t seem to figure out.

@ WOLF. The primary definition of a soldier from the Oxford English Dictionary is, “One who serves in an army for pay.” SEALs do not serve in the Army for pay, they serve in the Navy for pay, so that makes them sailors.

There are general definitions that say that a person who serves in military service is a soldier, but we aren’t dealing with general definitions. There is nothing general about a Navy SEAL. They are the best at what they do!

Now speaking as a person who has served in the United States Navy, not one sailor I know wants to be called a soldier. Those that do join the Army. A member of the United States Marine Corps is a Marine, not a soldier. If you call a Marine, “soldier” to his or her face, they will likely not tell you, but you have insulted them. A member of the United States Air Force is an Airman. A member of the United States Coast Guard is a Coast Guardsman. A member of the United States Navy is a SAILOR regardless of your job specialty or whether you are enlisted or commissioned. Only a member of the United States Army is a soldier and knowing soldiers, they take great pride in the title which they had to EARN in basic training. I think any soldier worth his salt (allusion intended) who has been through Victory Forge in basic training feels that calling a member of any other branch of the military a soldier is an insult or at the very least lowers the value attached to that title.

So try to be a little more sensitive to those who know the

Isn’t national defense, national defense, regardless of where you serve?

Or do you just feel like taking out your aggression on any target, because they are not “sailors”, they are just soldiers? Why is it an insult to anyone to be a soldier? Do soldiers work for a different nation?

I’m a proud Air Force vet and never tolerate anyone calling me a soldier. Every Marine I know would quickly straighten you out if you called him a soldier. And that’s nothing against the US Army, some of the finest people I’ve met are Rangers from Ft. Campbell, KY. But I would never call them anything soldier, Ranger or friend.

      Abraham Young…

It’s only National Defense if you are defending THIS nation (hence the National part of the name). And the last time that happened by a nation, was in Hawaii by Japan.

Otherwise, it is international defense (a police action). And while I have no issue helping to defending allies when they are attacked (e.g. Desert Storm), Enduring Freedom was an invasion with an attempt at nation building, something the military is ill-suited for. As it has been said, the military exists to kill people and break things, not build schools and win hearts and minds.

That said, military people have to go where they are sent. And when they get there, the quicker they can eliminate the targets and get home the better. Well done Seal Kyle!

      @Abraham Young

I am hesitant to respond to your post because it seems you either didn‘t read my earlier post or didn’t understand it. The divisions between the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard don’t make us weaker. Those divisions make us stronger. I admit that there is a friendly rivalry in the military between services, but it is just that – friendly. When we are out on town or see each other in a peaceful environment, we may throw around terms like “squid”, jar head”, “chair force”, “puddle pirate”, and “ground pounder”. That rivalry has an undertone of respect. Even when every once in a while we go fistycuffs over who is better.

That may seem like an exploitable weakness to our enemies, but they are dead wrong. When we need each other, we are there for each other. Whether it is on the field of battle with bullets flying or if a service man or woman is broke down on the side of the road. I know that I can trust my brothers and sisters at arms to help me when I need it. That isn’t weakness and it is dangerous for any enemy to try and exploit that perceived weakness.

My point was that each service has earned their title. I never once referred to Army personnel as “just soldiers” because they also earn their title. If I went up to the President of the United States and called him “dude” that would be disrespectful because he has earned the title of “Mr. President.” Just like Chris Kyle earned the titles of Sailor and SEAL.

To complete that circle. Matt 5:9 “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.”

Chris Kyle is not merely a peacemaker, he’s the sword of Gideon. Gideon or Gedeon (Hebrew: גִּדְעוֹן, Modern Gidʻon Tiberian Giḏʻôn), which means “Destroyer,” “Mighty warrior,” or “Feller (of trees)” was judge of the Hebrews. His story is recorded in the Book of Judges and this account is compiled in the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament. His story is told in chapters 6 to 8. He is also named in the Epistle to the Hebrews as an example of a man of faith.

We need this type of men waiting to purchase something at the 7-11 when the guy ahead of him pulls a weapon to rob or maybe kill the poor worker. Someone who is not afraid of the guy who is waving his gun with his hand beside the barrel or the gun upside down – those idiots don’t know or care where their bullets go and should be dropped in his tracks.

I only have 4 from Nam (from my model 1911), but they were all within 75 feet and I saw their faces when they realized I had beat them to pulling the trigger. I don’t have any medals for this, and don’t need them. Those 4 shots saved upwards to 20-30 men, most of them didn’t even know how close to getting a bullet in the back they had come. BTW: I fired a total of 8 bullets toward an enemy (1 magazine), the other four to make sure the first 4 had done their job.

How about you lay off the DNC Koolaid stand and do a little homework?
      We were in Iraq:
      1. Because Iraq had ignored 17 UN resolutions calling for them to submit to inspections to INSURE they had no WMD’s.
      2. Because the intelligence agencies of the other 14 members of the UN Security Council AGREED with our intelligence that Saddam had WMD’s and would likely use them AGAIN. (Do a little homework on Halabja, Iraq. Saddam previously used chemical weapons on his own people killing many thousands and was thought to be reactivating his nuclear program.)
      3. Iraq was providing safe haven to terrorists Abu Nidal and Abu Abbas, both found in Iraq after the invasion.
      4. Iraq was attacking US warplanes which were enforcing the ‘no-fly‘ zone with SAM’s and AAA on a daily basis.

You might not like the fact that we went into Iraq, but Saddam can do none of those things now, can he?
BTW, you cannot quote a single ‘lie’ spoken by any Bush administration official claiming that Iraq had something to do with 9/11. That’s a fable propagated by losers on the left who cannot read.

@Bri3D, I’m going to take on one of your points, that the US did not have authorization to invade Iraq.
      1. The first Gulf War ended in a cease fire that limited Saddam Hussein in what he could with his military. When he signed the treaty he agreed to give up his sovereignty if he violated it. He violated all nine points multiple times, giving the other signers to the treaty the legal right to re-invade Iraq. Therefore, not only did the US have the permission of the UN, but also the written permission of Saddam to invade. See UN Security Council Resolution 687.
      2. Congress has the power to declare war. The words they use to do so are not specified. They did so when they authorized the use of force (an act of war) in Iraq. See Article 1, section 8 of the US Constitution.

There is a time for war. There are times when war is justified. Unfortunately however, there is a strong case that America doesn’t qualify at this time, hasn’t for a long time.

Collective justice is not justice. Unofficial and unjustifiable warmongering will bring the wrath of a just God upon ourselves, not our enemies. You Bible thumpers are hypocrites, pretending that you have been in church and wrestled with your consciences before going off to a war to defend your families, your rights, and your principles.

That is not why you are there. You are there because you have wicked rulers making waking decisions, which you tamely acquiesce to.

When the wicked rule, the people mourn. Especially those who get on board with all the wickedness. They may prosper for a season, but when the season comes to an end………look out.

@proliance – SWISH!!! Nothing but net! Great post.

Don’t forget that the “first” war with Iraq wasn’t really “ended”…it was “paused” with the agreement sent forth in the UN resolutions.

Basically, the US would end military attacks PENDING compliance with the UN agreements. Iraq originally agreed to this, so we quit bombing them. However, Iraq immediately made it evident they had no intention of compliance with the resolution. It was an imperative part of the resolution…that Iraq had to show proof of how the KNOWN WEAPONS were destroyed, or what happened to them.

We still don’t know where those original, known, admitted weapons ended up, as Iraq never provided the promised data. This was one of the main (initial) factors of the UN resolutions, and why the US (and other countries) felt Iraq was continuing in their WMD programs. That, added to the history of Sadam having gassed huge number of peoples…why don’t the detractors ever give value to the lives of those who died terrible deaths at the hands of Sadam?!

…For unfinished business, Saddam turned on us, and he used WMD against the Kurds, or did you forget that little fact, gassed thousands of them…he had the WMD, just put things off long enough to get them out to Syria…Saddam would not sell oil in US dollars in the end, Saddam sealed his own fate, just like the AckMadDinnerJacket is gonna do…

      BRI 3D Said:
Reason to bomb Libya – Ghadafi was killing people – Ha – another lie. Where is the Libyan Gold now by the way?

A map of Libyan oil Concessions by Country
      http://williambowles.info/2011/03/25/map-of-foreign-oil-concessions-in-libya/

The following countries have oil facilities and contracts in Libya:
Italy, France, Spain, US, UK, Norway, Netherlands, Russia, Germany

      NATO forces attacking Libya:
Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Italy, Norway, Qatar, Spain, UK and US

There is quite an overlap of contries having Oil concessions and NATO countries supplying military support.

Ghadafi had around 150 tons of gold. He spent about 20% of a billion dollars to fight off the overthrow. Ghadafi had a scheme to only accept payment for oil in gold-backed Dinars. The world financial markets would have shifted from Petro-dollars to Gold Dinars. This would be a catastrophy for the US dollar. The remaining gold has probably been bought up by the Globalist Bankers.

Libya had no foreign debt owed to the International Monetary Fund or the World Bank. The Globalist bankers give loans to small countries so they will be perpetually in debt and under the control of the Globalists. Germany and the US made loans to the rebels.

If you have to ask, idiot, you probably belong in Yemen. As to your stupid comment before, “You tell the parents of the wounded, disfigured, and killed why their kids were over in Iraq”… I’ll answer that right now. They were there, moron, because they volunteered to serve. We don’t have a draft anymore, so these kids went because they wanted to go. They recognize the nature of our enemy, and they felt the need to defend the greatest country on earth. Slugs like you don’t even believe in the country we are trying to protect, just as you don’t believe there are real life terrorists out there wanting us all dead. Do me a favor. Don’t post here anymore. Go on the MSNBC site, or the ACLU site. You’ll meet like-minded brain dead people there and then you can compare notes.

Some people don’t respect the men that protect us. The following may be the attitude of the elite power brokers of the world:

“In Haig’s presence, Kissinger referred pointedly to military men as ‘dumb, stupid animals to be used as pawns for foreign policy.”

      @ Bri 3D
I see you are a very busy little girl with sophomoric issues, but let me enlighten you.

My grandpa was in WW2, and it was his fight to live. Not corporate bosses, or secret millionaires dreams, but by his own volunteer and a sense of duty, unpronounced since then. He explained, “Death is life, you can die a coward with excuses, or die with principle. These Japs (his words) wanted to die for country and they came over here to pick a fight. They thought we were soft. We should them we were soldiers.”

Our president sent men over to fight because there was another man willing to kill. These are baddies picking a fight, don’t feel sorry for them just because we can stand at the end of the day. All politics aside we kill because we were not killed first, hence you can pock your delicate finger into our eye. What’s more, we smile and walk away from you. Why? Because we now how to drop you, but that wouldn’t be sporting. Why? Because we kill soldiers.

Because your are a girl, not. And I smile while walking away.
      I hope you understand.

Bri Charachter risking everything, your life, for the protection of another. Most likely people he never met. I am not commenting on the polatics, strictly his actions. He should be thanked. I wonder how many degrees of seperation there are from you to one of the people he may have saved. It may be closer then you think. I think it takes a lot to take another’s life have you ever even thought about being in that position? How about to protect your spouse, child, parent? Put yourself in his shoes and let God be the judge that is his job. This Sailor did his.

@BRI — every now and then, the tree of liberty must be watered with blood. You are either too young to understand what that statement by Jefferson means, or two much of a far left pacifist to believe it. But trust me: there really is a war going on and these are not people who will just go away if we are nice to them. If you’re too young, maybe there’s hope for you because with age comes experience. But if you’re a left wing loon… you are way beyond hope I’m afraid.

Doesn’t take much to get the pacifist left jazzed. Mention the killing of Bin Laden, and they say the Navy Seal who took the shot which killed Bin Laden was wayyyyy out of line. Not only does Ron Paul seem to have a soft spot in his heart for terrorists and tyrants… he, like Obama, makes the U.S out to be the bad guys around the globe… that WE are the real terrorists and tyrants.

      > BRI 3D. Like the “other left”, Ron Paul has repeated characteriized the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as “illegal.” These statements are a personal affront to every Veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. After all, if the wars were truly illegal, it would follow that our Veterans who prosecuted them must be criminals because American Soldiers are duty bound under the Military’s Uniform Code of Military Justice to refuse to carry out any illegal order. Moreover, not only would the aiding of the prosecution of an “illegal war” itself be illegal, it would be a clear violation of the solemn oath taken by every Military Service member like myself. That oath requires us to uphold the Constitution and to follow lawful orders. Engaging in illegal wars would violate both precepts. So, Paul implies that every Veteran, because of their Service in the wars, has violated the law… and broken their word of honor.

This I truly believe 3D. Okay… put your glasses back on.

      @Yep

You keep flat out lying and you can’t stay on point or provide proof for your assertions. You try to pluck the patriot heart string to dissuade. The wars being spoken of are illegal. There is no proof to the contrary. Congress declares war. In an emergency Bush sent troops into IRAQ?!  There were no WMDs. Irrespective of the WMDs, Iraq did not attack us so there was no authority.

Trying to link the troops to criminal charges is something you did. I have no idea what the implications are for troops. They take an oath to defend the constitution and the wars we are in currently are illegal. Actually, a permanent standing army of any kind is illegal. Maybe an oath should be taken more seriously?

There is a legal solution.  Amend the constitution. I am fine with that. What you and the conservatives(progressives) want to do is change the laws depending on the day and how you feel. Which is why you lie about Ron Paul. He wants to cut military(wars) NOT DEFENSE.  He wants wars to be declared, fought with overwhelming force and then return home. We should not be nation-building. We are not authorized to do so. A uniform does not make you righteous, your actions do.

The CIA is concerned about gangs infiltrating the military. Are they patriots too? You use no logic and are lying.  You will never admit that you cannot refute one thing I said. Instead you will insult. How ******* of you.
