This New Self-Guided Bullet Is Nailing Targets Over A Mile Away

Editor’s note: This article by Robert Johnson originally appeared on Business Insider.
Sandia National Laboratory Creates Self Guided Bullet

The possibilities for failure in long-range shooting are as immense as they are mind-numbing. Pitch, yaw, air density, heat, cold, the curve of the earth, and the planet’s rotation on its axis all conspire make shots at half-a-mile miss, on average, by about 30 feet.

Sandia Labs looks like they’ve changed all that with their new self-guided round, which sheds enough convention that it resembles a small missile more than a traditional bullet (via Katie Drummond at Danger Room).

Four-inches long, laser-guided, while sporting fins and a forward center of gravity, Sandia’s bullet has an optical sensor in the nose that guides it to the target, while an eight-bit processor running a proprietary algorithm steers the round as it flies. Sandia expects the new technology to be developed quickly and inexpensively.

Because of the bullet’s diminutive size compared to, say, a full-scale missile, the same flight corrections can be performed dozens of times per second in its Mach 2.1 flight. Sandia’s engineers expect to raise that speed to military requirements using customized gunpowder.

Sandia National Laboratory Creates Self Guided Bullet

A small light attached to the round charts its path during a nighttime field test at Sandia Labs. (Photo: Sandia Labs)

The following video shows the bullet leaving the barrel of a rifle. The round pitches (wobbles up and down) a lot after firing, but calms the farther it flies—an effect called “going to sleep” by experts. This phenomenon allows the round to achieve greater accuracy the farther it flies; a result that surprised everyone involved.

This will make it easier to refresh the tree of liberty with the blood of patriots, because only the tyrants can afford this ammo (using the patriots’ tax money).! I am just thrilled to think that we maybe at the cusp of societal collapse, and the government is developing such wonderful stuff with which to kill us.

Joey8 they are not dreaming about do war with our military, none of us want to fight our own military but if the time comes and we must act to save the republic then it’s good to know that there are man ready willing and able to do just that.

Now before you start in saying that we don‘t stand a chance against our own military i would like to point out the fact that over in Iraq just a few men with AK47’s were able to do alot of damage and hold up THE BEST ARMY IN THE WORLD, now i know that we can’t win any set piece battles but just like the minuteman against the Red coats we would be able to pick our place and time to fight, do what damage we can and then fade away to fight another day.

You see it’s next to impossible for a government to win against a guerrilla style war and with a country as large as ours and with the amount of firearms in private hands in this country it would be impossible to prevent a guerrilla war and just like in Vietnam a guerrilla war would slowly bleed this government to death.

It would have to be laser designated by a spotter with a special scope. You couldn’t expect a shooter to regain proper sight picture and alignment in the 2-4 seconds that it takes for the shot to travel over a mile. It just wouldn’t be feasible.

Good question. Presumably, there doesn‘t have to be a ’shooter’ in the usual sense. Spotter sets up the ‘gun’, moves to spotting scope/laser, illuminates target, then by electrical or mechanical means fires guided ‘bullet’. The shooter become superfluous, it would seem.

Technological developments come quickly, of course, but let’s consider some numbers. “Mach 2.1″ is an odd way to characterize bullet velocity (if we can call this a ‘bullet’). Generally that is only important in consideration of the round remaining transonic to target, i.e., it arrives before the sound does. Always a good thing. At any rate, Mach 2.1 equates to about 2400 f.p.s, which is on the low side for velocity of a medium to large bore rifle cartridge. Using that number, a 2400 foot shot would take (ignoring falling velocity) 1 second to target. According to the above, the smartslug (you heard it here first, I should trademark the name) will have the opportunity to make “dozens” of flight corrections. I’m doubtful about the response time of the system, but they seem to be working at it. As others have pointed out above (or below), it obviously requires a while to get its flight under control. The “laser guided” part suggests that the shooter (launcher?) must maintain a laser spot on the target. Hard to know how that is any easier than maintaining a conventional sight on target. I suppose it isn’t, and that the advantage (as is suggested in the article) is in compensation for the uncontrollable stuff. Nonetheless, the shooter will have to hold a spot steady on the target.

      Posted on January 31, 2012 at 2:20pm

Compensating for the uncontrollable stuff is what makes long distance shots difficult. It’s easy to sight a target in your crosshairs. With conventional shooting, the farther a shot is the more difficult it becomes to correctly compensate for drop, wind speed and direction, temperature, humidty and everything else that factor into where a bullet is going to go after it’s fired. With this none of that matters, because it will correct it’s course constantly to stay on target.

BTW, a standard high velocity rifle/tank projectile wobbles upon exiting the muzzle. The projectile then stabilizes. What you see in the film is normal.

      @Buddynoel

You clearly have been reading the wrong books. The 5.56 NATO in the original M-16 would tumble AFTER it hit flesh because it was under stabilized. The original M-16 had a slow twist. 1 in 16 or 1 in 18 (without looking it up.) that would make the bullet “keyhole” on impact The Marine Corps demanded better accuracy for their rifles so the twist rate was increased to 1 in 10 and an easily adjustable rear sight was fitted resulting in the M-16A2 rifle which is the basis of the M-4 issue rifle. And the 5.56 now punches a neat hole unless it encounters something like light body armor before it meets flesh.

Myself, I’d like to get my hands on one of those slow twist barrels.

This was ‘74 and we were being shot at by the A-1s I think. I remember digging the slugs from trees where the bullet went in sideways. I was always told that was by design – sort of the Army’s answer to the rules handed down by the Hague convention outllawing the use of fragmentation rounds. I thought it was funny that there were rules to warfare.

@BUDDY: If the bullets fired at you from an enemy M-16A1 were keyholing the barrel was either shot out, it was extremely hot or (more likely) the projectile tumbled upon impact with vegetation or other objects prior to, or once, coming to rest. BLACKCROW’s assessment pertaining to twist, etc. is right on the money. No need to repeat it here.

But granted, the older M-16A1 rifling twist caused the 5.56 bullet to do some crazy stuff and what you heard about the Hague is correct. Indeed, several countries have tried to ban the use of the 5.56. Similarly, the tissue damage caused the medical corps in Nam – namely, surgeons – to rewrite the procedures for the treatment of wounds, lung wounds in particular. It was a bad bitch . . . when the weapon worked.

Good picture Dave, but the original illustration shows that the projectile is enclosed in a discarding sabot like a tank 120mm DU round, which is a subcaliber penetrator surrounded by a sabot that discards after the projectile leaves the muzzle, so the rifle would have to have a much larger bore than the diameter of the projectile shone.

“Can you provide us with a single example of a deadly technology not “used against our own citizens” outside the obvious nuke example?”

-This is too easy: biological and chemical warfare. Pepper spray and tear gas do not count. Here are more: Tanks, artillery, conventional missiles, etc..

If this is your idea of logic, your competency as a programmer comes into question.

I am fairly informed. That is why that I try to look deeper beyond the surface issues and apply the test of logic and critical questioning of my own assumptions and the evidence. There are many technologies that are even scarier than this bullet, yet the advantage greatly outweighs the disadvantage. As a combat vet, I can tell you that a bullet of this type actually would save more lives than it took. Hard to believe, but true. If I can take out a crew-served weapon position at great distance with one bullet, then I can end the engagement that much sooner and with less casualties on my team. If an insurgent is using civilian non-combatant human shields, you can imagine the value. My point is to ensure we do not throw the baby out with the bath water.

No sweat Melvin, it’s the internets…

Spend some time looking for info on programs by the US on Bio warfare “tests” done in the US (under cover of “we must know what could happen”) with live, “harmless” agents. Chemical testing was done as well. Tanks, well, not exactly tanks but the Police have stuff one notch short of it.

All of that aside, my view is the ten thousand year view; if they haven’t yet, they will. They *always* do. It’s just a question of time and our time is very quickly running out. Nature is the teacher; everything born grows corrupt and dies. Everything. This is why I’m looking past America to what comes next. America has served her purpose and her time is up (look at the people you share this place with!). When they finally do openly turn on us, the technology they have will make our fight nearly impossible.

This is why I never cheer for new ways to kill or spy. I know who will have it.

We have met the enemy and he is us.

I’m referring to the United States. There will always be megalomaniacs in the world. Should we ban handguns in the US because a criminal has used them to murder? The same holds true for WMDs. If we destroyed all of our WMDs, we put our country in serious jeopardy. This would never happen as it is irrational and irresponsible. The result could be that only the most evil would not only have WMDs, but would have no problem using them against us.

Impressive! Something tells me you’re a decent father :P

However, now imagine a moving human target at 1900yd (1910yd is considered the max effective range of a .338 Lapua). Suddenly this type of round looks more attractive, no?

The range is one thing the real world is something else entirely.

Panama (Just Cause) and Gulf War (Desert Shield/Storm) Vet who has more than a couple rounds down range.

What is your daughter using at 1K yards? Most of the rifles I see on that line are not something I would have a kid shooting. The 300 Win Mag that I use on 1000 yard matches would probably put any 13 year old off shooting for good.

      Women equipped to be prostitutes…
You heard that somewhere and thought it sounded cool huh??? (you have used them twice already) come on it’s okay to admit it :D

I think what people are saying is…“Allow me to equip myself with the tools necessary to protect me and my family from what ever small arms are out there”….not ban it…

Will I use those weapons in the wrong manner? I don‘t know that’s a slippery slope…. Of course not Most people would not, and DO NOT…. It’s just hard for the law abiding citizen that is not out to harm anyone to arm themselves against those that could care less about the law or the constitution and are out to harm people.
