We’ve brought you the largest and speediest land-to-sea vehicle for its size and the concept of Volkswagen’s “Aqua Car,” but here’s a prototype that combines both speed and sporty design. The Sea Lion by Marc Witt recently set what is believed to be a world record for amphibious vehicles.
The car, which is being sold at the moment for $259,500, travels up to 125 mph on land and 60 mph at sea. According to Fantasy Junction, the site hosting the car listing, YouTube is currently an “internationally accepted” source for speed documentation. Check out the car’s specs and see it go from land to sea in this video:
The website says that the car beat out 25 other contenders in an unofficial competition for top speed in the amphibious category. It also says they don’t necessarily want to make it a more official competition as the “participants enjoy the freedom of having a complete lack of rules.”

The Sea Lion, a project that started in 2006, is constructed with an “integrated monocoque welded uni-body center section” and has removable side pods for floatation and cargo. It’s current engine is a Mazda Rotary 13b, which Witt states in the listing is what limits the car from going even faster in the water. A higher horsepower engine would amp up its performance at sea. Witt suggests it be upgraded to a Renesis Rx8 unit.

Witt even offers to help the buyer of the vehicle with any future modifications of the car, should they want his insight.
“I will remain available as a consultant, engineer, machinist and psychiatrist for whoever decides to venture further into the amphibious record books,” he said.

Posted on May 17, 2012 at 12:57pmSo the winner of this unofficial contest was the one where the driver is absolutely 100% unable to see in front of him while in the water?
I’d hate to see the other 25.

Posted on May 17, 2012 at 3:04pmYou’ve never driven a boat before I see.
I will say .. if that thing goes 60 MPH … with that flat bottom .. if there is any chop whatsoever .. the driver will be beat to death from the bouncing. I’d rather have a v-hull that can do 80 and get me to the canyon in 1 hr or less.

Posted on May 17, 2012 at 12:27pmAt $259,500 a car, I am not impressed with what it does. If it could be driven underwater, That would impress me.

Posted on May 17, 2012 at 11:17amGee! you mean there are still thinkers, dreamers, visonaries still out there? When I was selling Yachts my partner and I wondered If we could ever sell a $225,000 65′er (1972). We bought it and a drug importer from Miami bought it all Cash in paper bags. No remitter needed. “Oh, those were the days my friend” Now they are in the Millions. Good business people don‘t invest time and money in products that don’t sell! chump change for these .1/100of the 1% I think I’ll buy one! This is still America isn’t it. Clizbe1

Posted on May 17, 2012 at 10:19amInventors should face the reality that your everyday sports car driver is not going to take their car out fishing or wakeboarding. However, if someone could come up with an SUV that can become a stable and relatively quick boat that you can walk on top of to fish, swim, and pilot; then maybe an amphibious truck would be okay. Of course, the thing still has to maintain its ease of maintenance, low cost, and sturdiness as a road going vehicle. Until that happens, a boat and a car will be cheaper to have than a single amphicar.

Posted on May 17, 2012 at 12:50amMozart’s Requiem is a dumb choice for a product that makes you worry about safety and reliability.
The car itself looks like a prototype that needs much more work.

Posted on May 16, 2012 at 8:20pmAnd to think someone wasted a ton of money developing this steaming pile. Ugly as hell, and when it’s in the water, the guy at the wheel can’t even see past the ramp that looks like a WWII landing craft. It carries bike parts though, that must make it cool.
