This Video is Why the NFL Just Warned Players About Faking Injuries

NFL Sends Memo About Faking Injuries After Video Surfaces of Giants Rams Game

NEW YORK (The Blaze/AP) — The NFL sent a memo Wednesday to all 32 teams warning of fines, suspensions and loss of draft picks if the league determines players faked injuries during a game.

In the memo obtained by The Associated Press, the NFL reminded teams of league policy that calls on coaches to discourage the practice, and that there was no specific rule on the topic.

However, two days after there was speculation the Giants‘ Deon Grant faked an injury against the Rams during Monday night’s game, the NFL is warning of disciplinary action.

Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo said Tuesday the team notified the league office that it suspected the Giants were feigning injuries in St. Louis’ 28-16 loss. Rams quarterback Sam Bradford said it was obvious the Giants were just buying time with St. Louis running a no-huddle offense.

“They couldn’t get subbed, they couldn’t line up,” Bradford said. “Someone said, ‘Someone go down, someone go down,’ so someone just went down and grabbed a cramp.”

The video evidence seems to support that charge, as two players go down in unison after the play:

Grant was adamant, however, about not having faked anything.

“I could see if I was walking and fell,” he said Wednesday, speaking passionately and barely taking a breath. “When you see after I made that tackle and bang my knee on that play, you see me bending my knee as I am walking. … (Teammate Justin) Tuck is walking behind me and saying ‘D don’t run off the field. Just go down.’ As I am walking, they line up, and knowing that I can’t get back in my position because of the knee injury, I went down.”

Had Grant attempted to get off the field, it could have left the Giants a defender short when the ball was snapped. Of course, New York also could have called a timeout, a course of action teams might need to use in the future.

The memo from the league said:

“Going forward, be advised that should the league office determine that there is reasonable cause, all those suspected of being involved in faking injuries will be summoned promptly to this office … to discuss the matter. Those found to be violators will be subject to appropriate disciplinary action for conduct detrimental to the game.”

The league’s competition committee often has discussed this issue but has been reluctant to propose a rule that could force game officials to make judgments on injuries.

“We have been fortunate that teams and players have consistently complied with the spirit of the rule over the years and this has not been an issue for the NFL,” the memo said. “We are determined to take all necessary steps to ensure that it does not become an issue.”

For the most part, such delay tactics have been considered gamesmanship.

“As an offensive player, you always think guys are faking in that situation,” Eagles guard Kyle DeVan said. “But you don’t know for sure. You don’t know when guys are going to cramp up, so you have to be careful. The most important thing is players’ health. You would hope guys don’t do it, but it’s going to happen.”

And the NFL’s disciplinarians will be watching.

That was so obvious. I’ve seen it used in other games that nothing was said. This was just pulled off badley and now the NFL needs to take action to put a stop to it. The player and the coaches and owners should be fined…big time.

Yeah they play games to get contract negotiations and now they take it to the field. I am glad that I don‘t pay to see these Millionaire jerkwads in person and don’t even watch on TV. I like the real Football and it is not in the US!!! What this has turned into is a rich man’s game to hide taxes from the IRS so that they can stay Rich. So I don’t participate with my own money.

      Let them eat cake.

I can‘t believe that Americans don’t recognize that “pro football” is just union based entertainment. Just like Las Vegas show girls. It‘s a ’show.’ There is WAAAY too much money at stake for this to be 100% legit.

They act like spoiled children. Immature. They throw tantrums and “act” all of the time. They are personally irresponsible and a burden in their communities. Sorry. I’d flush them TODAY.

Still not as bad as Soccer or or the original football. But don‘t they have that rule that if you stop the clock or injury you can’t be in the next play. They may have to change that to out for the next 4 drives or the like. It has been going on forever but as injury is now high on the radar of players to fake one just to slow the game down can harm those who are really injured.

@Southernorcobra… sorry, it is not a “red card” it is only a yellow for what is called “simulating”… the sad part is, that rule is only a few years old in soccer… FIFA got tired of all the laughs for a simple fouls looking like someone was shot with a 12-gauge… I give out “yellows” when someone acts like they are gun-shot and then run to catch the striker 2 seconds later.. it’s sad, but it’s part of the game….

They’ll most likely lie through their teeth. Who cares anyways. They loose respect when they pull stunts like this. It seems like the whining effect is spreading to all levels of society. He did this, they did that, they make to much money and I spend all mine, i’m suing you. What a sad world when everyone has to much time to whine and not enough time to work and make a living.

Football has no prestige left. Let them cheat on each other, who cares? Let them ignore their rules, make stupid new ones, and be sure that there is NO REWARD for honor. The NFL should be allowed to have the freedom to fail. Seems like they are anxious to exercise that freedom. Who cares? Bye football.

I don’t know about that, Tony Romo continued to play with a broken rib and punctured lung, seems like you gotta be really tough to do that. And he’s coming back for more this weekend. How about Brett Favre playing with a broken ankle? The frauds in the NFL make the real tough guys look bad.
