Viral Video: Man Speaks With His 12 Year Old Self via VHS Recorded 20 Years Ago

Date: 1992. Subject: Jeremiah McDonald, 12 years old. Goal: Talk to oneself in the future. Method: Record and leave oneself a VHS tape.

“I think I’d like to talk to myself in the future,” pre-teen Jeremiah said. Fast forward to “the future” — 20 years later. Jeremiah the elder pours himself a drink — a hard one — for this adventure.

The two Jeremiah’s say hello to each other and it begins. Ages are exchanged, observation of physical changes from getting older ensues, during which time Jeremiah the elder begins to look annoyed at his younger, more energetic self.

So, what does Jeremiah the younger want to know? “Is Molly still alive?”

“No,” Jeremiah the elder responds. “Dogs don’t live that long.” Unfortunate.

After another pet death question and a brief — yet hilarious argument — between older and younger occurs, there’s a trigger. “Roy,”  a cartoon drawing, sparks something in Jeremiah the elder.

“Do you still draw Roy?” asks Jeremiah the younger. “No, I don’t draw much anymore,” answers Jeremiah the elder with a look of slight sadness as he remembers his dream of wanting to be an animator. Instead, Jeremiah put his talents into film making.

You can see evidence of his artistic work as a filmmaker in this less than four minute flick for yourself (Content Warning: Some strong language):

Posted yesterday, the film already has more than 700,000 hits on the YouTube channel Weeping Prophet Productions as of this posting.

The genius is in the 12 year old … but the guy today isn’t half bad either

Hilarious! I wish I could talk to my 12-year-old self. I’m almost 60 and love who I am now, but I’d still tell my younger self to not be so afraid of things. To take more changes, try different things and not be so hard on herself! I smile as I wrote this because that 12-year-old self was no naive and innocent. I kind of miss her.

I so agree. I would tell myself to be more adventurous and try new things more often. I find it hard to remember the 12 year old me….and I’m only 48. I’ve just been through so much since then, but I do like myself. I am who I am because of what I’ve been through. Wouldn’t change it. This video was better than I expected it to be.

If I could talk to my younger self, I say “Go ahead and major in archaeology, you’re going to end up unemployed anyway”

This was very well done and funny. However, thinking about my 12 year old self took me to a very difficult time in my life when my 12 year old self tried to kill himself. Fortunately God intervened because He had other plans for me. I wish I could‘ve sent a tape to my 12 year old self to tell him things would get better and even though he felt the adults in his life didn’t love him that his heavenly father does and would heal him of those wounds. Thank you God for your love and saving grace.

Excellent! I wonder what my 12 year old self would have recorded. Oh, and the things I would say to her. I would not change anything from my past. Good & bad. It made me who I am. Wow!

That’s great! If I could do that, I‘d kick my self’s butt for not listening to my Dad about saving a small portion of my paychecks for my 20+ year older stupido self.

Interesting. He did an amazing job with the scripting. He’s obviously very creative. No wonder he’s a filmmaker. LOL And his 32-year old self had to collaberate with his 12-year-old self! LOL Wonder what other “films” like this he will create in another 20 years or so. . .? LOL

that was sooooo cool I wish I could have talked to myself when I was 12 boy I sure would have told myself to get into politics so I could have a job doing nothing with great benifits, half the hours I have to work now, my job performance wouldn’t matter,I could take vacations on other peoples money, vote my self raises,I would be a great poker player because I could bluff (lie) with a straight face, spend other peoples money with promises I will never keep, have power to tell other people how to live but not live that way myself, travel in private jets and be driven around in a lemo all on other peoples MONEY

    Show this to your kids.

Teach them that they have to take control of their own destiny or they will twist in the wind with no choice of the shape they end up in.

For a minute I thought that this might be fake. After watching it a couple of times, I don’t think so.

The eyes and ears are the same, and those don’t change.

A very creative kid who liked to make movies – apparently since 9 yo (stop motion).

Lots of fun to watch and the views are over a million now.

I remember watching a Dr. Who episode a few years ago where the Doctor got trapped in the past and created a video tape where he had a similar dialogue between his past self (which happens to be in the present) and his future self which happens to be in the past. lol

Fantastic video; will be sharing this one at another forum that I frequent. :)
