‘53’ States? Video of Teens Failing Miserably at a Civics Quiz Is So Depressing It’s Funny

Did you know that “bin Laden” is the vice president of the United States, or that the Civil War led to America’s independence? How about that Canada’s a state?
Well, that’s what some local students at (what appears to be) a Washington state high school think. In a video that’s probably a few hours from going viral, a young man decided to question classmates for a video called “Lunch Scholars.” It is anything but scholarly. HuffPo explains:
Austin, an intrepid young student-reporter, embarks on the noble mission of answering the question, “How much basic knowledge do American high school students really have?” The answer, however, may not be exactly what you want to hear.
“Do you know the vice president of the United States?” Austin asks.
“I don‘t know who it it’s, it’s, it’s somebody….Bin Ladin,” one student responds.
The video continues in similar fashion, asking everything from, “In what war did America gain independence?” (which no one answered correctly without a hint) to “What countries border America?”
By the way, one student says there are 51 states. Maybe he is friends with the girl who thinks Canada is one of them.
HuffPo may have said it best: “If there was ever a movie to make you laugh to keep from crying, it’s this one.”
Let the laughing, and crying, begin:
Hillbuzz blog, however, isn’t laughing, and used the video to go after teachers’ unions:
Why do teachers’ unions claim they deserve more pay and endless benefits when this is the result of their “hard work” in the classroom?
[...]
I can just hear the teachers’ union reps consoling the kids who thought there were 51 stars on the American flag (you know, for all 51 states): “It’s okay Brendan, you can try again. We are all winners here. There are no right or wrong answers. You said there were 51 stars, but if you can think up an extra 6 stars you too can be president some day”.
That’s not to say, though, that there aren’t good teachers. But there’s obviously a failure somewhere.

She commented to the teacher that she thought we were a republic and the teacher said don‘t say that you’ll just confuse everyone. A couple weeks later while at the dinner table she mentions that she remembered the 5 pillars of islam for a test the next day. I cant begin to say how pissed I am right now just writing this. This started under Bush (don’t flame me) with the no child left behind. Here in Texas, they teach to the TAKS test. They know what’s going to be on the test and they make sure the students know the answers to those questions. Forget about teaching basic knowledge and asking those questions.

Posted on February 4, 2012 at 9:21amRAIDER1, your daughter remembered the 5 pillars of Islam? you can thank Obumbler, better known as the Islamist-in-Chief and the politically correct establishment for that one. Obama not only is NOT a Christian, he is a Muslim, and gearing this country and the world for the establishment of a Caliphate. Moreover, he is getting the assistance of the Elitists, the Lame Stream media, the Department of Education, the NEA with its’ state equivalents and other leftist groups, including
Hollywood, USA. “How is that?”, say you. Rather simple, but shrewd maneuverings by the Imposter-in-Chief.
You see Obama has succored the assistance of not only these groups, but also ISNA, CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood as well as many leaders in the Mosques and Islamic nations of the world, such as Saudi Arabia and the ring of “newly converted” nations around the Mediterranean, such as Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt under the guise of Democracy while paving the way for control of each of these countries by the Muslim Brotherhood.
While undermining, destroying and denigrating our country, and at the same time masquerading as a dupe for the Elitists, Obama is preparing to turn the tables on the them when the timing is right. The cunning, derisive ways of the devil are often not seen until it is too late, then the Elitists will be snared in the trap that they have been laying for others, when Obama springs the trap on them. Never, never underestimate the enemy. This wily creature, only God can

I don’t hold any of these kids responsible for their poor performance. Teachers and administrators create the culture in which the students learn; they are culpable for the poor performance of these students.
Read Ben Chavis’ book “Crazy Like a Fox: One Principal’s Triumph in the Inner City” and learn the truth about educating kids. It doesn’t take money or a union. It takes good teachers who have the bullocks to teach the 3Rs and cut out the “feel good, you are all winners” politically correct, liberal fluff.

I teach 5th grade and the vast majority of my students could answer these questions correctly. Most of my 5th grade students can do math at a higher level than their parents. Public education is far from perfect, but you are all so ready to believe it is awful that you fall for a silly prank like this.
I can not speak for every state, but in Colorado students are doing better on the ACT than they ever have. What makes this even more amazing is that 20 years ago only college bound students took the ACT and now every student must take it. THE SCORES ARE HIGHER EVEN THOUGH TEN PERCENT OF THE STUDENTS DON’T SPEAK ENGLISH.
When I was in high school, I took0 AP Calculus and Spanish my senior year. Those were the only options available. My nephew just went through the same public high school and he has been taking AP classes since his sophomore year. He also understands computer programming at a level I can’t comprehend.
There are public schools failing, but most of them are in the inner cities with extreme levels of poverty and very few students who speak english. The schools there are not failing, it is society that is failing.

Two weeks ago I have a quiz to college seniors in a major U.S. university. These seniors will become commissioned officers this coming spring.
All could answer questions when asked to name personalities on “Jersey Shore” (they all know snooki and the situation).
The mass majority can answer question concerning songs from Lady Gaga and Madonna.
Out of 22 students, only one could tell me that James Madison is the father of our constitution.
Only three could tell me the three primary rules to gun safety
Most could not list more than three of our first ten amendments.
Five answered “republic” when asked what form of government do we have? Most wrote democracy.
When asked “according to John Adams, are we a nation of people, or a nation of rules?“ less than half answered ”rules”.
I believe one could argue that you can build and sustain a nation on the ideas, ideals, ethics, morals, values…of our Founding Fathers.
I do not believe you can sustain a nation with the ideas, ideals, values, ethics, morals… of a Lady Gaga, Madonna, Snooki…..
I believe we have come to the point as a nation that many of our politicians and much of the highest ranking members of our military fall more in line with ideals of Lady Gaga and Snooki than they do with the Founding Fathers. They way they drank the kool aid and ended DADT lets me know that as a nation we are nearing the end.

While they did great things in their sacrifice in Europe, the Pacific, and the work done in the states to support our troops, they came home, and then raised the worst generation. they raised the pot smoking, acid dropping, long haired, liberal, hippie freaks that partied naked at Woodstock, burned their draft cards, and destroyed a nation. My argument is that the fed gov, pro communist libs and progressives played a hand in dumbing down our education system. In the 50s, we ranked top in the world in math and science. Now we are below the 50% mark.
After we pushed creation and prayer from our schools in 63, we started on a steady climb to be the most violent and murderous education system in the history of the world.

Thus, I will also tell my boy study to the Constitution. Then to focus on Math, Physics and Chemistry. Any other classes to take would be about Welding, Electronics, Plumbing, Auto Mechanical, etc. Everything else (excluding healthcare) is just plain B.S.! Yes, since the 60′s, generations have become dumber and dumber. The 60′s people are now running this country, and look at it!!! The Department of Education (founded by John Rockefeller) is a tool used to take critical thinking out of schools. The public schooling system from K through College is junk! People are taught to not “think for themselves” anymore, we are taught to memorize and resuscitate a lot of information in a short amount of time during school. I started a Blog yesterday economytrap[dot]com

Nobody when they’re 18 does good on a street quiz, generally speaking, however GenY does worse than most. It’s not just education at play here, it’s the constant media bombardment that sells the product that to be stupid is to be “the cool one”.

The United States became a Corporation in 1871 after the southern Congressional Representatives did not show up in 1860.
Abraham Lincoln declared matial law in 1861 and we have been “under” it ever since, with occasional “declarations”
In 1912 the “United States” corp was broke and had to turn to the Global Elite for a Loan.
The Global Elite Established a PRIVATE BANK called the “Federal Reserve” to operate as the “United States” Central Bank.
In 1913 the Federal Reserve Act was passed.
Income Taxes began that year.
In 1933 we defaulted on the Loan. America Declared Bankruptcy.
We have been Bankrupt ever since.

Birth Certificates became law in all states in 1933.
Social Security in 1936.
These are security bonds for the Receivers of the bankruptcy.
In 1944 the Lien on the “United States” was quitclaimed (transfered) to the IMF and World Bank.
They created the United Nations in 1945.

They way they drank the kool aid and ended DADT lets me know that as a nation we are nearing the end.”
The conclusion you reached, basically, is the same as many high profile analysts, the most prominant of which is Pat Buchanan. Gerald Celente is another. (Trends Research Inst.) There are many, many more.
Putting social engineering in the schools in place of education is responsible for most of the ignorance among these students.
And, DADT is but one of many signs of an imploding empire, but it is an important one, because that kind of societal change throughout history usually…along with other decadence….precedes implosion.
No multicultural empire in the history of the world has succeeded for very long, with most erupting into internecine war.
Mostly homogeneous societies, like Japan, have the best track record of stability. People who share a common language, a common history, worship the same God, and have the same role models and heroes, are better grounded to withstand hard times than a mish mash of tribes that are constantly bickering with one another. Homogeneous societies always pass along their histories to their offspring, too, while fractious ones have none to pass along.

However, I think there are two causes: the progressive agenda that started in the 1890s, and the previous generations since that time who have been adding a new level of failure on to the failures of their previous generation when it comes to raising children.
I fear this may only be fixed by a coming purge. When it hits the fan, those of us who are prepared with knowledge and equipment will hopefully be the ones to rebuild our society. Sadly, my generation’s participation in this will be minimal. I hope to raise my future children to be stewards of individual liberty and morality, and will do my best to fultill that hope.

The fact that you support Ron Paul gives me some hope. Not much, but a little. You are on the right path, and apparently more intelligent than many of the so called “adults” here.
Many of the older generation here have been bombarded by so much propaganda over their lifetime, that independent critical thought, is almost an impossibility for them. They have been trained to “go along to get along,” and are equally at fault for the demise of this country. They are frankly just as ignorant as some of the teens in this video.
The fact that Ron Paul is the oldest candidate in the race, and receives the most support of younger voters, is encouraging. Hopefully his life’s work inspires a generation to fight for the principles this country was founded upon.
This country needs radical surgery, not an aspirin, which is exactly what the other candidates represent. We may not recognize America in the next couple of years if something drastic isn’t done.
BTW the teen in the video WAS correct. There ARE “51 states.” Israel is the 51st state. They have totally infiltrated our Military and Govt. through powerful lobbies like AIPAC, and survive because of the dangerous religious nuts that spread the falsehood that we need to support them at all costs. Their radical Govt. is about to drag us into WWIII, and destroy what is left of this already struggling economy.

Posted on February 3, 2012 at 10:51amUtopia? This is anything but funny, it’s a sad testement to what unions and lazy slug teachers have done to our children. Not knocking all teachers, just the ones applicable. I am the product of the public education system, but thank God that I started school in the ’50s. I also knew that there were 48 stars on our flag back then too.

Posted on February 3, 2012 at 11:06amYou made a comment about “Utopia”……think about it, in order to have a “Utopia” wouldn’t you have to keep everyone stupid so that when the “elite overlords” tells them that they are happy that they just accept it. If they actually teach people how to think for themselves then they won’t be able to control them as easily!

Posted on February 3, 2012 at 11:15amI went to school in the ‘50s but can’t remember learning much in the schools. I learned most of what I know at the dinner table or while reading. Teachers in the ’50s were every bit as progressive as they are now. We just had parents that made us accountable for our actions in school. I‘m sure you remember the ol’ parental saying, “if you get a whipping at school you’ll get another one when you get home.”
Report Post »Our parents even went to progressive schools. Granted it has only gotten worse but the roots of the progressives go back over one hundred years. We should have started chemo on this cancer long ago.

Posted on February 3, 2012 at 11:16amPOPP40, Have to agree with you. But, I listed Utopia in utter disgust at the idiot female student who said Utopia was a nation that started with the letter “U.” Undoubtedly she learned this from one of her teachers. Absolutely disgusting.

Posted on February 3, 2012 at 11:32amERIC6161, I grew up through some of my childhood in California. Fortunately my family moved back to the south before I started school. The unions had not invaded our schools at the time and as I recall the teachers took their jobs seriously. I probably still have calluses on my fourth point of contact to prove it. When I retired from the Army almost 15 years ago and returned here the union had by then almost ruined the public school system. We put our son in a private school for as many grades as it went. Then moved to a rural area where we were able to pick the county school that he attended. Just had to provide him the transportation to that school. Didn‘t bother us a bit since we didn’t want him on a school bus anyway. He is now almost finished with a degree in electrical engineering which has been a blessing within itself. The core of his class instructors have to stick to teaching technical skills and do not go off on liberal diatribes. He has complained about some of his required peripheral courses where the professors/instructors do get off topic. My wife and I both have taught him to just sit back quietly and take a garbage in, garbage out attitude to accomplish a passing grade. As I mention this the terrors of a particular criminal psych class come to my mind.

Posted on February 3, 2012 at 1:43pmThis school and these kids are very fertile groung for the future of the “Occupy” crowd.
From the video you can readily see what looks like a new/fancy suburban school where you would think the kids would received a top education. What the Teachers Unions have done to this country is really a mortal sin.
Jay Leno, Bill O’Reilly, Andrew Brietbart to name a few have done similar “man on the street” interviews and the level of uneducated, ignorant and stupid people in the country is amazing…………there is no wonder why we are no longer the leader of the free world and sinking further every day.

Posted on February 3, 2012 at 11:54amUBETHECHANGE, He grew up in a good conservative home, in my humble opinion. Although we tried not to propagandise him to our views, he just picked them up for himself. He has spotted those things in his text books and pointed them out to us. When he first started school I did the same thing that my Dad did. He had my sisters and me to bring home all of our school books at the start of each school year until he read through all of them. I was almost shocked at first at some of things that I read in his books and even when he was in private school. Of course they were required by the state to use certain books. He and I had our discussions though. Now that he is close to finishing college I am not at all worried about him. We both know that there is useless pap in his text books. He is intelligent enough to see through it. Frankly, I think that he is more right wing than I was at his age, and I voted for Nixon in my first presidential election. Besides, McGovern and the Dems were a total no go in my mind. Living through LBJ’s administration was an education within itself too.
