This Viral Vid of a Motorcycle Speeding Nearly 200 MPH Has Police on the Hunt for Driver

On The Blaze, we frequently bring you video footage of motorists taking their vehicles‘ speed to new highs. What isn’t often covered though in some clips that go viral are the legal implications if these cars or motorcycles are not authorized to achieve these speeds on public roads.

In April, a YouTube video gain traction on the Web after showing the motorist’s perspective of what it looks like to go 186 miles per hour down a highway in British Colombia.

Since that time, according to the Times Colonist, police have been on the hunt for the driver, who they believe to be Randy George Scott. On Tuesday of this week, Scott was charged for the dangerous driving and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

In April, Jalopnik reported the motorcycle believed to have been pushed to the limit on the Trans-Canada Highway was seized by police. The woman who owned the bike was fined nearly $1,500 at this time, but police believed it was her son who was the driver. Saanich police Sgt. Dean Jantzen told the Times Colonist there was insufficient evidence until recently to peg the crime on Scott and issue charges. It was the media coverage the viral video that helped the authorities glean more evidence.

Watch this CNN report on the charges:

Here’s more from the Times Colonist:

“That was pared down to three critical witnesses that our officers felt provided the best information,” he said. “That was information that connected the rider to the bike to the incident.”

[...]

Jantzen said police had limited contact with Scott during the investigation, mostly by phone.

People were understandably shocked and outraged by the video, he said.

“This is an egregious example of someone who really is disregarding all norms of traffic safety,” he said. “You can hardly put words to it.”

Check out the original YouTube video showing the bike allegedly driven by Scott with more than 794,000 hits at this time:

In my opinion, his only (major) mistake was doing that with other people in the area.

We pay millions and millions of dollars to see ‘Hollywood heroes’ do this sort of thing, but a real action-oriented guy comes along and everyone wants lethal injection.

The people that cry and protest the loudest about this sort of thing are the ones who won’t/can’t allow themselves this sort of freedom.

Grow young. Live it up! If that means danger for you, then so be it. Just make sure you understand what you’re risking, i.e., your good health, even your life, and of course, don’t put anyone else at risk.

THX-1138 this is not for you. I would like to respond to AL GATOR. As you can see I am inputting my word around yours just to show the idiocy of your argument

Last week or so, everyone here was in High Dungeon because the cops arrested a biker who was filming.

The funny this is that I am STILL enraged that these cops pulled over a biker for no reason other than to try and STEAL is personal property. I watched that entire video and he did not do anything illegal while the camera was rolling. In fact when the biker was asking why he was being arrested, the cop had to look around for a good reason! Then the best he could do was an obstructed license plate!?! On first offense that is a warning, then a ticket, and finally on the third offense arrest able. NOT THE FIRST TIME!!! And what about the unwarranted assault? But I guess in your mind it falls under the police officers rights.

LOOKY HERE, THE ONLY WAY TO CATCH THESE CRIMINALS IS TO CATCH THE FILMERS, be they on a bike or in a car.

So just out of curiosity, you think that for the simple fact that someone has a camera while they are riding is full permission to pull them over and steal their property? What about people that like to watch the reruns of their riding for the sights? Or to improve on their riding awareness? I understand that a few people do stupid things on motorcycles, but does that mean that it should be illegal for us to ride?

I will continue on my next post.

Just to show you the idiocy of YOUR argument, the guy who got busted was chasing and filming a criminal action. Maybe he was an accessory to that fact, maybe not. But, he was in possession of evidence, and as such the cop was right to demand it.

If you have a convenience store and run a surveillance tape and that tape happens to catch a crime, it gets impounded.

Now you go ahead and make all the excuses you want, and be as insulting as you can be, these thrill riders, just like drunk drivers, are criminals. Period.

I hope for your sake that you or anyone close to you is never harmed by these criminals. But I think your whole outlook will change if it does happen to you. Then, you will not only want the film impounded, but you will probably want the guy with the camera arrested without bail.

“So basicly you are saying that if anyone has a camera in there car, bike, tricycle go cart baby stroller to film as they go they are commiting a crime ”

I have no idea how you came to that illogical conclusion. You must be a product of publik skoolz because critical thinking is not your strong point. What I said is that if a person has a camera in THEIR car (not there car) and it HAPPENS TO CATCH A CRIME IN ACTION, THAT CAMERA AND FILM or TAPE WILL BE IMPOUNDED as evidence.

“What USMC and others are saying not making sence to you.” No, it makes no SENSE (that’s the correct spelling) to me at all because you are completely missing the point. Freely recording your day and possessing evidence of a crime are NOT the same.

“Do you believe “we the people” can be arrested for simply having a camera on ou”\\

Yes you can AND SHOULD be arrested if your camera contains evidence of a CRIME and you refuse to hand it over. You are WITHHOLDING EVIDENCE. And for the sake of the victim of that crime, you SHOULD be arrested.

Now I know this is all a little complicated here, but if you take your time and think things through, you will understand that your histrionics (that’s a tough one, look it up in your Funk and Wagnalls) are completely out of line.

Is that what you were brainwashed in school to believe? If so – please move to Russia, we don’t need you spreading that propaganda here.

It’s not “withholding evidence” until a court orders you to provide the evidence by a court of law, not a cop at the scene. And then, all you have to do is provide a copy – not the actually camera or memory card, as the evidence is the photo file, not the hardware.

The Cops are the ones that should be doing time if they try to force you to give up your camera on the scene. They are the ones abusing your civil rights! Politely tell them no, and offer to provide a copy of the files if you wish.

Having been in many high speed pursuits and arriving at many accidents caused by people like this, you learn that going fast is a very dangerous and some times grusome event. If you have the need for speed, then there are legal and fun ways to do it. There are tracks and courses set up so that you can take your car or bike out for a spin in a controlled environment where you can only harm yourself. It is stupidity to see these guys endanger others with thier antics. Worst one I saw was a motocyclist doing the same thing, but he came over the hill at high speed and slammed into the back of a slower moving minivan carrying 6 children and one adult. His body flew threw the back glass of the van and he splattered on the inside of the front windshiled. Injured and mentally scarred all the kids and the driver. Of course when we showed up the motorcyclist was a gurgeling pile of mutilated bloddy guts. Lasted 20 min after the EMTs showed up. Again, take it to the track!

There is no need to manufacture these so called “crotch rockets”. Just last week I had a bike pass me on a 2-lane road doing at least 100mph. The worst part, the passenger on with him. I could tell that she was petrified. Clearly he had no regard for the passangers health or well-being. Just after he passed, a farm tractor and hay wagon were turning into the farm lane and it was damn close. There is no need for a street bike to be that fast. That speed is for the track.

I suppose Ferrari‘s and Shelby’s have no need to make their big ass engines either? Seriously think about what you’re saying. Its called capitalism, and its what we love.

Then you’d better have your minivan governed down to the speed limit because it will go way faster than the speed limit allows.

Yeah they are really scary and go fast with sparkly paint. Let’s ban them!! Knee-jerk. So a couple idiots drive fast and you want to stop producing the machine?? I’ve been riding super sport motorcycles for 35 years. Never has one of them, by itself, magically twisted the throttle and sped away with me on it. Leave responsible motorcyclists alone and put morons like this in jail. Then auction their bikes so I can get a deal.

Went by you at 100mph and in that split second you could tell the passenger was petrified? Shut up!

The rider is an idiot but he wasn’t going 186 when he was threading through traffic. I like the way the owner of the vehicle was fined for something she did not have anything to do with.

The high-speed lane splitting makes me cringe. He misjudges the vehicle separation one time and he’s toast. If he keeps that up the cops won’t have to bother to arrest him, they’ll just have to show up and shovel him into a bag.

nice ride, I remember being young once. The fastest I ever went was 167 in my 1970 GTX, the car started to float so I slowed down. That was over 30 years ago, I have slowed down and we did not have so many cars on the road. Never crashed, it was all about man and machine. Some of us rare people have no fear.

Definitely an adrenaline rush. Done that in a 911 Carrera. But, crap happens real fast at those speeds.

Uh…, 167 mph in a 1970 GTX? Really? Not to distract from the topic, but I have to chuckle about that one. Apparently MOPAR had some *very* optimistic speedometers. Oh!.., wait…, the speedometers didn’t even go to 170 mph. There was no need, since the cars weren’t *nearly* that fast.

You are correct Right thinking 1. Speedometers went to 120MPH back then.

@rightthinking1 – apparently you are not a gear-head. Ever heard of “after-market”? No, thought so. With only a few mods, the ‘70 GTX was easily capable of speeds over 170 – speedometer be damned!

You may want to stick with topics you know.

Actually, If the car had a Rally dash (They were made for some MOPAR models in 70) the speedo went to 150.

Thank God some people on here do not have a stick stuck all up in you know where on this site. Some of us are a little more fearless than others and when you combine that with youth, can lead to some bad decisions in hindsight. I am not saying that what this kid did was right, but I would venture a guess that most people have at one point or another broken the law / taken a risk that put others in jeopardy. Had a couple beers with dinner…drove all night nodding off at the wheel….speeding due to tardiness…texting…putting on your makeup…driving while angry…The list goes on and on. God and a little thing called natural selection will sort it all out. Stop asking government to protect everyone all the time from everything or you will end up with nothing besides buses and a metro to ride that come complete with your very own full size riot gear clad officer on board to “protect” you.

Oh, don’t worry, a few more stunts like this one and the perceived “laws of Darwinism” will definitely be in play – in fact, this guy/mother should be nominated for future Darwin Awards…in this particular case, had one motorist thrown a can/bottle/other “distraction” out the window and voilla, we have ourselves a winner!

At the very beginning I thought that it wasn’t so bad, but when he squeezed past the boat on the trailer I actually said a profane word out loud.

And it got worse from there.

It is one thing for this guy to risk his life for the thrill, I can understand that, but imagine what would happen to the passengers of a car when the bike and rider enters their rear windscreen at nearly 200 mph.

    It doesn’t bear thinking about.

What? It’s a Motorcycle after all. You can meet your maker just trying to get to the road thanks to inattentive drivers talking on a cell phone and other misc. stuff drivers do while driving. I’m not shocked that the Ploice up there are feverishly searching for this guy in the act. Not enough bacon to let nature take its intended path…

….of course, Canadian law has a bug in it’s backside when it just comes to the look of your car. NO camber allowed, wide rims get the stinkiest eye possible and if your car is low, it better be because of being on 4 flat tires. Everyone knows that an automobile is an extension of one’s persona.
