Thousands of Protesters Turn Up the Heat on Georgia Immigration Law

Thousands of Protesters Turn Up the Heat on Georgia Immigration LawATLANTA (BLAZE/AP) — Thousands of marchers from all races stormed the Georgia Capitol on Saturday to protest the state’s new immigration law, which they say creates an unwelcome environment for people of color and those in search of a better life.

Men, women and children of all ages converged on downtown Atlanta for the march and rally, cheering speakers while shading themselves with umbrellas and posters from the blazing summer sun. Capitol police and organizers estimated that between 8,000 and 14,000 protesters gathered. They filled the blocks around the Capitol, holding signs decrying House Bill 87 and reading “Immigration Reform Now!”

Friends Jessica Bamaca and Melany Cordero held a poster that read: “How would you feel if your family got broken apart?”

Bamaca was born in the U.S., but her mother and sister are from Guatemala. She said she fears they will be deported.

“I would be here by myself,” said Bamaca, 13. “I have a feeling (the governor) doesn’t know the pain affecting families. If he were to be in our position, how would he react?”

Azadeh Shahshahani of the American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia called the rally inspiring and said she hoped lawmakers would recognize the law’s potential to damage the state.

“I think it’s going to have an impact,” she said. “Unfortunately, the damage has already been done as far as people of color having second thoughts about moving to Georgia.”

Thousands of Protesters Turn Up the Heat on Georgia Immigration LawSeveral different groups stood with the largely Latino crowd, including representatives from the civil rights movement. The Rev. Timothy McDonald, an activist who has been supportive of immigration protesters, was among the speakers showing his solidarity.

“You are my brothers and my sisters,” McDonald told the crowd. “Some years ago, they told people like me we couldn’t vote. We did what you are doing today. We are going to send a message to the powers that be … that when the people get united, there is no government that can stop them. Don’t let them turn you around.”

Saturday’s rally follows a “day without immigrants” organized Friday, when some parts of the law took effect. It was organized by the Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights. The organization asked businesses to close and community members not to work or shop to protest the law.

On Monday, a judge temporarily blocked key parts of the law until a legal challenge is resolved. One provision that was blocked authorizes police to check the immigration status of suspects without proper identification. It also authorizes them to detain illegal immigrants. Another penalizes people who knowingly and willingly transport or harbor illegal immigrants while committing another crime.

Parts of similar measures in Arizona, Utah and Indiana also have been blocked by the courts.

Provisions that took effect Friday include one that makes it a felony to use false information or documentation when applying for a job. Another provision creates an immigration review board to investigate complaints about government officials not complying with state laws related to illegal immigration.

While the peaceful protest was organized to call attention to the Georgia Law, those in crowd hoped their presence would call national attention to immigration policy reform. From the Atlanta Journal-Constituion:

“Protesters invoked President Barack Obama’s name repeatedly as  they marched past the state Capitol, signifying their support of the federal DREAM Act, which would provide conditional permanent residency to certain illegal immigrants, such as high school graduates, who came to this country as minors.

‘We need comprehensive immigration reform,’ said Helen Kim Ho, executive director of the Asian American Legal Advocacy Center, one of 62 organizations that participated in Saturday’s march. ‘Change has to come from the federal level.’”

If you are here illegally you are breaking the law, plain & simple. Millions before you went about becoming an American citizen legally. Ignorance is no excuse & stupidity is a choice, those who choose to enter our country in a criminal fashion should be deported.

First they run form their families and life and then they break our laws to get here..next forget how their work and protest could make a better life in Mexico, just for a few dollars. They are the low life of their home land using any excuse to change things here when they should be trying to make it better in Mexico.. Show just how low they can go.

Mrs. Bamaca, as young 13 year old it is hard to know that your parents are no different than other human beings. They put you in a position to be in this country without them, and they knew it. It is not the fault of the law abiders that the law breakers, like your parents, put you in the position they did. I feel for you. A fish don‘t know he’s wet.

The States are sovereign and have a right to act.
Controlled, legal immigration (including a SECURE BORDER) is necessary for any of the following reasons:
    1. National health (preventing the immigration of communicable disease)
    2. Drug smuggling (preventing importation of drugs)
    3. Violent crime (preventing violence from drugs, or violent criminals escaping to America)
    4. National security (preventing those who wish to damage our society through terrorism or otherwise).

Give us a SECURE BORDER, then legal qualified immigrants can enter as needed or allowed.

      11. Establish English as our official language
(The melting pot is called that for a reason. If you want to be American, you will apply for citizenship, and put down your flag and pick up the Stars and Stripes, and align with her values and tongue – it’s a choice, be an American or leave).
Language unites a country. We need to STOP providing: “For English, press 1” (English should be 1 and only); Spanish signs, forms, etc. in Spanish. It costs taxpayers money and divides our country. If you are a U.S. citizen, you should know English. If you don’t know English, then you could not have become a U.S. citizen

We need to seal the border, before it is too late…if it isnt already. This is the result of the failure of the federal government to perform one of its basic duties….for years. Now we have so many illegals that they have the political clout to slow or stop the fix.

When in the course of human events…

Congress and the Executive branch are full of impotent cowards. I’m sorry to say it, but Bush was just as bad. The Feds are utterly abandoning us and leaving us vulnerable so our states have no choice but to take action. These people are a plague on our country. They sneak in here, they don’t learn our language, they don’t integrate into our society, they steal our identities so they can work illegally and then send the money they make back to Mexico, they soak up gov’t benefits, and then have the nerve to protest us. What reasonable country would put up with this? I don’t mind reasonable immigration but this haphazard cluster-f%$@ that is our immigration system has to stop. We don’t have to break up families – send ‘em ALL back: mom, dad, kids, grandma, and their pet burro. Who says we can’t deport them all? Have we tried? They came in one at a time, I say we send ‘em out the same way with a big HECHO EN LOS ESTADOS UNIDOS (Made in the USA) boot print on their butts. Seal the border, napalm the drug dealers, and if Felipe Calderón doesn’t like it, who gives a fig?

When you find groups like these find out where their cars are and slash their tires, find out where they live throw rotten eggs at their houses, their cars, their businesses, sugar in the gas tank, etc, find out who their lawyers are and who and where these crimmigrant activists groups are and continue to vandalize and economically sabotage them to make them leave. If you have a good chance, throw rotten eggs into crowds like this and drive off. Gather a bunch of people and flank them from all sides with rotten egg showers. This will put these criminals in their places. Our laws aren’t being enforced so the people must start to strategize and take things into our own hands before it is too late or something bad happens to one of us or our family members because of these illegal foreign invaders that are killing our country and the ones who support them are just as bad!

You’re kidding right? The states have the power to take care of this, we have been told that only congress and the white house can fix this. BS, if you can have “Sanctuary Cities” you can have “NON-sanctuary cities” and STATES! Let the feds catch up on this one since they have chosen the wrong side and chose to punt on this issue or sue and publicly degrade our own states.

Let the keep searching little kids in the airports, while the border is OPEN to the world! Welcome come on in !!!

Immigration reform now– I agree… SEAL THE BORDERS!
ICE should be arresting all of those present to or at least start examining citizenship.

Unfortunately, our federal government refuses to do what is LEGALLY right. In most cases, it’s not the federal government that bears the consequences of an abundance of illegal immigrants sucking up resources and programs meant for AMERICAN CITIZENS, it’s the states. State budgets are being overwhelmed by caring for illegal immigrants who use the emergency room as their own free healthcare. State taxpayers are being taken advantage of by colleges that offer in-state tuition to illegal immigrants. The list goes on and on.

Just more proof Congress and NOT THE STATES needs to act.

Congress is deadlocked… WE must act to insure a republican majority in the upcomming elections.

Can someone tell these morons we have immigration laws on the books and simple enforces those we have. As for these protestors: I‘d have thought they’d considered the possible separation if they been caught and sent back to their country of origin.

Wrong, the states need to act because the Feds won’t. Ice should have immediately sent agents and buses, checked status on everyone and those illegal, packed them up and shipped them out.

Nice try Idiot. We all must act to stop the Racist Larazza Illegal Alien Criminal Invaders. Federal level state level citizens military and law Enforcement all need to work together and cut off the Jobs, Schooling, Government aid and housing. They will leave. We need to make it a felony to be in the United States and anyone caught should be barred from ever setting foot here again.Arrest those who hire and rent to them and take there wealth away to pay for the destuction they have caused tax paying United States Citizens.
