Three Boston University students studying abroad in New Zealand were killed early Saturday when the van they were riding in swerved off the road, the Boston Globe reported. Five other Boston University students were also injured in the crash.
New Zealand police said Daniela Rosanna Lekhno, Roch Jauberty and Austin Brashears were killed at 7:30 a.m. local time. All three were juniors.
The students were in a group of 16 heading on a day trip to Tongariro Crossing, a popular hiking path. One of the two minivans carrying the group apparently drifted onto gravel, overcorrected, and then rolled over, police said.
Most of the students were enrolled in a study abroad program based in Auckland.
“This is a horrible tragedy,” Robert A. Brown, Boston University’s president, said in a statement. “Our prayers go out to the students and their families. We will do all we can to provide comfort and assistance to those who have been injured, and to the families and friends of the victims. The university is mobilizing all of our resources to help our students and families deal with this tragedy.”

Local police said the cause of the accident was unknown and would not confirm whether the vehicle’s occupants were wearing seatbelts. Officers said some students were thrown from the van, indicating at least some were not.
Two of the injured students have since been released; one is reportedly in a medically-induced coma.

Posted on May 13, 2012 at 8:58pmThree high school students died at a high school in Utah the same day in a car crash. How come the Bawstuhn kids are national news and the Utah kids aren’t? Why is one so much more tragic than the other that it merits a story on national news for three days?

World Three Boston University Students Killed in New Zealand Van Crash During Study Abroad Trip

Okay, last time I looked, 3 plus 5 equaled 8. So, were 8 Boston University students killed or not?

Posted on May 12, 2012 at 3:21pmWhy is this a story here? Massachusetts and California are normally considered vacation homes for Satan around here, so the loss of any of their evil spawn (or ‘ilk’ as you guys often put it) is a good thing, just like the unfortunate ishap with Norwegian teenagers a while back.
Also, this happened in New Zealand, which is like Mars to the Blazers.

Posted on May 12, 2012 at 3:19pmJudging from the terrain on the side of the road; any un-trained driver that went into that ditch (tire blow out or distraction) and tried to steer back onto the road quickly would cause that kind of “rolling over and over” kind of accident.
Prayers to the families and friends.

Posted on May 12, 2012 at 3:51pmI was in New Zealand a few years ago and I would not drive (really they wouldn’t let me) as you are driving what I call the wrong side of the road and it would taken some getting used to for sure. In fact when I got off airplane and went to get in on passenger side I quickly found out I had got in on the drivers side, I was so tired I got under steering wheel and didn’t even notice until driver asked me if I wanted to drive.
But seriously may the angels be with the students. My heartfelt prayers for survivors.

So… eight Boston University students died in the crash. Seems like a pretty inefficient way of reporting.

Posted on May 12, 2012 at 2:38pmIf I may, umm, may I respond to this tragedy like a modern day american student? OK now here goes, “I belive this is just a darn tragedy, and I feel for the families for sure. these kids were on their way to seeing the world, studying abroad and learning from other cultures that may have provided them many valueable insights to the value of people across the globe, in that, good decent things don’t always ceom from one country or culture. A shame indeed i say, and God Bless the families and rest assured, your children are at peace now in a heavenly presence. Now, back to that justin beiber article.
