Posted on September 29, 2010 at 2:51amGDHUS is sore, “…my behaunkus didn’t stop hurting until, I kid you not , a week and a half later.”
Ha! Ha! Welcome to the Wild West! Imagine yourself 200 years back driving cattle from Mexico to Wyoming for a month of Sundays! OUCH! This is why cowboys drink a lot of whiskey.
There are two types of horse riding soreness. One is easy to cure, the other requires physical exercise. If your buttocks were rubbed raw, easy fix. Buy padded bicycle shorts but make sure those fit loose. Wear those shorts under your jeans. Fitting loose is very important for men. Those shorts will strangle your stuff and leave you numb where you should not be! In time your skin will toughen up. A good exercise is to get naked then scoot around on your carpet like a dog itching its butt. Do this for a half hour once a day.
Other soreness is along the insides of your thighs from clamping too much and being spread too much. Clamping too much is usually a fear of falling off. You can cure clamping too much by keeping your feet out of your stirrups, let your legs dangle freely. Shortening your stirrups a couple inches will help but eventually you will need to have your stirrups at the right length. Purpose of stirrups is to carry your weight from jog to gallop, to raise up a bit for a smoother ride. You should never have to clamp unless rodeo riding which only last eight seconds!
Greatest relief comes from stretching exercises. An example is sitting on a floor then use your hands to spread your straight legs apart as far as possible and stay that way until your legs burn. Relax and repeat many times over months. You know the routine.
Doing squats will strengthen your legs for riding. Notion is to not clamp rather press down on your stirrups to carry your body weight, least partially. This is a squat like position.
Do those things and you will be ready for a cattle drive from Juarez, Mexico to Cheyenne, Wyoming. Bring a couple bottles of whiskey. Those are for ornery injuns like me!

America types etc to end this “sport”. out of anything involving animals, this is just truly barbaric in this day and age. just as bad as dogfights, and roosters etc. why don’t these men just get into a ring and duke it out like men.

Posted on September 29, 2010 at 1:03amHey, Okpulot Taha, thanks for the cowboy education. That was interesting. I’m a city slikker who moved to Houston and a horse-loving friend recently asked me to go horseback riding . We rode for about three hours and I had such a good time. But my behaunkus didn’t stop hurting until, I kid you not , a week and a half later.

Posted on September 28, 2010 at 9:06pmMore people die by the effects of watching too much Televison.
People who spent hours watching television greatly increased the chances of dying early from heart attacks and strokes. Compared with those watching less than two hours of TV, people who sat in front of the box for more than four hours a day were 80% more likely to die for reasons linked to heart and artery disease.
TV watching increases risk of cardiovascular death.

Posted on September 28, 2010 at 8:15pmLooks like an open and shut case of self defense on the part of the bull, sorry that 3 died and 37 were hurt, but the bull fighters were going to kill the bull anyway, so this sort of a thing is always a possibility. People get hurt and killed during the running of the bulls in Spain also, take a chance sometimes it works out sometimes it doesn’t. I wish the injured a speedy recovery, the dead rest, and the family of the dead peace.

Posted on September 28, 2010 at 8:09pmI don‘t agree with this type of bull fighting so I don’t feel sorry for the people. They don’t look like they take a lot of precautions for the crowd. Our rodeos are a lot safer for the general public. So the blame is not with the bull!

Posted on September 28, 2010 at 10:41pmJOSEPH FAWCETT invites readers, “Hope you take a look at my personal website”
I did. You are clearly a talented artist. Lovely work. However, I am a little bit disappointed.
Both my husband and I rodeo ride, have for decades. We love horses, love anything cowboy and Indian. I started out working on a horse ranch back when I was six or seven years old. Over our years, we worked for a number of horse ranches saddle breaking horses, training horses while making sure our horses remain a bit wild and a bit ornery. A trick we taught our horses is to expect an apple slice before being mounted for riding. No apple slice, instant rodeo ride!
Rather fun to sell one of our horses to urban cowboys down in Dallas who fancy themselves rodeo riders; they quickly discover they are not, and never discover our apple slice trick.
JOSEPH FAWCETT writes, “I am a ‘new’ professional western artist. would like your feed back.”
My mild disappointment is I do not see any rodeo riding cowgirls on your website. Some technical points for you, no paints, no speckles, no clear stallions, no spurs and no long hair cowboys.
http://www.purlgurl.net/~puma/misc/saddle_spurs.jpg
There is a photograph for you. This is my century old ranch work saddle and my spurs. This is a working class saddle, a ranch saddle not a casual riding saddle. Side flap on my saddle is turned up so you can see D rings for accessories such as a scabbard for a Winchester saddle rifle or tool bags. Horn is steel reinforced and has a special shape for rope work like roping cattle or wild horses for branding. Back rest is reinforced to provide stability for lasso work. A rider leans back against this backrest, feet are planted forward in stirrups, a cow or horse is roped, wrangled if needed, then this lasso is wound around the horn, wound not tied; you need to release quickly for slack to have your lasso back.
This special horn is also used for tasks like riding fence line; stretching barbwire or moving branches and logs. Backrest also serves as platform to steady yourself for shooting. Behind this backrest is a stiff perch for strapping on a camp roll; blanket, clothes, whatever can be rolled up. This perch doubles as place for a second rider for short rides.
Leg chaps are broad and thick to protect against brush, limbs, cactus whatever might tear at your jeans and legs. Stirrup height is adjusted not by buckles rather by a series of double holes and shoestring like lengths of leather or traditionally, braided gut; easier on a horse’s side. Bottom of this saddle is covered with sheep hide and wool which requires protection from wool eating moths.
My spurs have rounded 10 point rowels, a good all-around spur for ranch work and rodeo riding. Contrary to popular belief, spurs are not “rolled” to make a stallion or bull bronc more. Doing so would be mean. Spurs are simply to have a better grip. Spurs roll across hide so not to slice nor cut a horse or bull. Spurs, in a way, behave like a pair of hands getting a hold.
On cruelty to animals during rodeo riding, only animals treated cruel are stupid rodeo riders. Horses and bulls have a good time, rodeo riders end up trashed, hurt and often earn a mouth full of arena dirt.
I agree with you, Joseph Fawcett, on bull fights. This should be illegal. This is true cruelty.
Next time I visit your web site, I expect to see some cowgirls, long wild raven black hair with braided in feathers. You are a good artist, quite talented.

Posted on September 29, 2010 at 6:01pmthe thing about a bull is that it will probably kill you if it can. you should not be surprised if it does.
the thing about people that get into a ring with a bull is that they are often suffering from the defect of perception that objects appear smaller than they actually are.
unlike the horns of a dilema, there is nothing like the horns of a bull to put you in your place.
