BEND, Ore. (AP) — A Bend, Ore., woman says three deer attacked her barking dog and left the pet with head wounds and a punctured chest, but she’s expected to make a full recovery.
Tiffany Rounds says she often sees deer in central Oregon but never had them in her backyard before Thursday. Her small dog, Daisy, clearly thought it was inappropriate and went flying out the door, barking.
Rounds told KTVZ on Monday that the six-point buck and two does started beating the dog with their hooves and then the buck tried to get her with his antlers.
Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife biologist Steven George says even if it’s a domesticated dog, deer react to a predator that could hurt or even kill them, so they’ll be defensive.

Posted on December 7, 2010 at 12:18pmYour right there are way to many hippie tree hugging libs here now…I wish they’d all go back to Cali where they came from. Of course their housing prices have fallen so much here every house is almost 80% underwater now. Bend is like #2 or 3 on the west for underwater mortgages. Of course OR is known for being a liberal wack job state but their are a few of us normal people.

Posted on December 7, 2010 at 8:14amYou know that makes me laugh…… That dog “ daisy” wasn’t mentioned as a horrible PIT BULL who probably attacked the deer……???? They may have not caught the breed…

Posted on December 7, 2010 at 7:22pmPit Bulls aren’t all bad, but I caught that too and was wondering if anyone else noticed it. The owner referred to her dog as small or little and I laughed…it‘s a pit for cryin’ out loud. Of course the deer thought it was a predator!!

Posted on December 7, 2010 at 6:44amI always have deer in my backyard. They’re in rut; for you city dwellers, that means it’s mating season. You don‘t mess with deer when they’re in rut.

Posted on December 7, 2010 at 6:23amI’ve had deer try to stomp my small dogs, some cows do the same. Mules in some environments, like out in the wild will too. Once I was hiking and a pack mule came up following us. I thought he was just used to following people but it turns out he thought my one dog was a coyote or something and ran up and tried to stomp him. I guess horsemen in the back country will have a mule in with the horses to stomp wild critters, snakes. That’s what I was told.

Posted on December 7, 2010 at 12:21pmYes, many farmers in the South own donkeys for coyote control. Coyotes will kill a newborn calf in a minute, as the cow usually separates herself from the herd for calving. A donkey HATES a dog or coyote
I live near a heavily wooded area and a few years ago, there was a crazed doe that kept chasing my dogs as we tried to walk down the street. My dogs’ expressions were hilarious. Turned out she had a newborn and was trying to keep them away from it. Thankfully she finally took kiddo and moved deeper into the woods so we could not get too close.

Posted on December 7, 2010 at 2:59amI live in Bend and the deer have killed two small dogs on our road this year. My little Weiner dog was on a tie out and I caught a doe charging him. It wasn’t like he was ankle biting. My son has a half mile walk to his bus stop and we talk regularly about deer safety. You can all laugh if you want but it is actually quite serious. At any time I could have ten in my front yard. Stupidly, the neighbors feed them, then they like to climb on top of you, your children and your dog fearlessly. That’s what happens when all the tree hunger get together, then they wonder why their dog gets squashed, poked or trampled…duh!

Posted on December 7, 2010 at 2:32amThis is different, yet indeed the deer will act in the defense of what they view as a ‘predator’; a dog most likely seems to follow the style of a generic ‘wolf’ attacking it.

Posted on December 7, 2010 at 2:27pmWAY TO GO DEER!!! At least the deer have a good option for a barking dog. All most of us can do is turn up the TV or radio to try to drown the sound out. However at three o’clock in the morning there are NO options. I think I’m going to get some Deer as pets and see what happens.

Posted on December 7, 2010 at 5:12pmI don’t mind a dog barking if there is a threat, as in this case, but when they bark all day for no reason that is a whole different thing.
