TIME Author: Jesus Advocated Tax Rates Up to 100%, So Paul Ryan’s Budget Could Be ‘Un-Christian’

TIME Author Erika Christakis Writes in Ideas: Jesus Advocated 50 100% Tax Rate, Therefore Paul Ryans Budget May Be Un Christian

(Photo: AP)

TIME author Erika Christakis asked readers Tuesday whether Paul Ryan’s budget is “un-Christian,” and whether Christians really should be voting for the Romney-Ryan ticket.

What does she mean?  Christakis began (all subsequent emphasis added):

Americans often tell pollsters they yearn for a return to the Christian principles on which the U.S. was founded. If so, they should take a closer look at the Mitt Romney–Paul Ryan ticket. Jesus’ teachings regarding wealth are nowhere to be found in Ryan’s budget proposal.

As near as we can tell, Jesus would advocate a tax rate somewhere between 50% (in the vein of “If you have two coats, give one to the man who has none”) and 100% (if you want to get into heaven, be poor).  Mostly, he suggested giving all your money up for the benefit of others. And Jesus made no distinction between the deserving and undeserving poor; his love and generosity applied to all.

The author conveniently forgets to mention that Jesus did not advocate giving all your earnings to the government in the hope a percentage of it would benefit the poor — he advocated helping the poor directly.

Newsbusters’ Ken Shepherd also notes that Jesus applauded the tax collector Zacchaeus when he pledged to give back the money he had fraudulently taken from taxpayers.  Jesus did not, at this point, teach how tax rates should be 100%, nor did he tell Zacchaeus that should really give all his money the less fortunate, rather than back to the people who earned it.

(Photo: AP)

But Christakis continues:

Theologically informed individuals are beginning to weigh in on the ethics of Ryan’s budget plan. Sister Simone Campbell, executive director of Network, a Catholic social-justice lobby, has called Ryan’s budget proposal “unpatriotic” and “immoral.” As she notes, Ryan’s budget “rejects church teaching about solidarity, inequality … and the common good.” In a recent address at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Campbell observed that it’s the government’s responsibility to control society’s excesses. “In our culture of individualism,” she said, Catholic social teachings can “counter that individualism with a keen knowledge of solidarity.”

Maybe we’re crazy, but doesn’t government controlling the “excesses” of society sounds a little bit more like totalitarianism than Christianity? The religion certainly advocates responsibility and moderation, but through personal responsibility rather than by force through government.

The TIME author and Harvard College administrator concluded:

We’ve heard a lot of Bible-based discussion in this election season, but if we are going to evaluate social policy using so-called Christian principles, why stop at abortion and insurance coverage for birth control?  … It’s one thing to lower taxes for rich people, but these plans actually hurt the poor. That’s not noblesse oblige; it’s cruelty.

One Newsbusters commenter wrote that the left seemingly has the same attitude towards the Bible as towards the Constitution: they are its staunchest advocates when it suits their political ends, otherwise they seem to ignore it.

What do you think?

Correct! Jesus advocating giving even up to all that you had for advancing the kingdom of God. Not that we should give all of our money to a secular government that doesn’t give a rip about the gospel. But he did tell us to pay our taxes when he told the Pharisees to “render unto Ceaser that which is Ceasars and render unto God that which is God’s.” The twisting of scripture is from the pit and smells like smoke, because Satan tried that with Jesus in the wilderness. “My people perish for lack of knowledge.” If you don’t know His word in these last days you will suffer the consequences of ignorance.

I WISH that people who want to argue that Jesus wanted us to all act like Progressives would at least address the fact that Jesus did NOT address how a government should act, EVER. Jesus’ teachings focused on a personal, not a collective responsibility to help the poor. Taxes, since they are mandatory, do not fulfill one single shred of one’s personal responsibility to help the poor. If you read and understand the New Testament, rather than cherry pick it for a verse here or there that you think supports your position (see this author for Time or my fav, Lawrence O’Donnell, the Jesuit-trained but clearly failed Christian), you understand that Jesus’ teachings as to the use of your money relates to what you do with what you have control over.

Jesus said give all YOU have and give to the poor. At no point did he say take all that your neighbor has and give that to the poor. No one else can fulfill our personal responsibility. If I enter a political battle and successfully take everything that Bill Gates has and give that to the poor but keep my IRAs, house and investments intact I am guilty of theft in God’s eyes. Rather than having performed a virtuous act, I have sinned against God’s law.

This misrepresentation of Jesus’ teachings really does burn me up. If this is anything like what the Muslims feel when they confront sacrilege I begin to understand their anger. I still can‘t imagine acting on that anger and don’t understand them when they kill, but I

Exactly, there is a BIG difference between someone being charitable to another and the government stealing from your pocket to pay their special interest groups. No doubt the Democrats want to make April 15th a national holiday because they feel so much joy when the government takes their cut from the income of the people.

Also a quick lesson for everyone in Washington. There is no such thing as a tax cut as they define it. I keep hearing Obama and his regime saying “We can’t afford to give them a tax cut”. News flash, that money isn‘t the government’s money, it belongs to the person who earned it with the sweat of their brow. Washington just wants to steal more from our wallets so they say the lie that they can’t keep giving us a tax cut. Think of a burglar breaking into your home and saying “I just can’t afford to let you keep your TV any longer”.

The Bible also states that “if you don’t work, you don’t eat” but we have a responsibility to take care of those who cannot work, such as old widows and orphans. Community-based charities are much better suited for this type of work, because the community knows who does not try to support themselves, and those who do try. There is a huge difference between assistance and support. What does the Bible say about about serving two masters?

      TIME author Erika Christakis,

Since you have concerned yourself with the teachings of Jesus, may I suggest you examine what Jesus says about little children. President Obama would advocate the MURDER of his own grandchild: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jszkPtsFH-k

Obama says babies are a punishment, and his voting record shows that he is in favor of every single sick & depraved way of chopping up and disposing of human babies.

Jesus, on the other hand, said “Take heed that you despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.”

and also: “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”

and also: “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

Perhaps the question ought to be posed “how can anyone who follows Christ vote for a baby-killer like Obama?”

Where in the new testament does it say that? I’m an atheist, but I’ve read the bible, and I don’t remember Jesus saying anything along those lines. There is zero historic evidence for this laughable claim. So Ms Christakis is just another opinion maker violating history for her own gain.

Also, how the heck would she, or anyone else, know what Jesus would say or support today?

Taxes are forced payments. Christian charity is all about volunteering. If we go by the historic Jesus, based on what we actually know about him, he would more likely drive the tax collectors out of town, instead of having them squeeze more money out of the people, like he did it with the moneylenders in the temple.

By the way, such tax rates are common in many EU countries and guess what… the money is not enough. The entire EU is effectively bankrupt, despite tax rates that can only be called criminal.

Jesus made no “ tax” statements. He had to continually fight against being thought of as a political Messiah . He came to save men’s souls not to put a chicken in every pot. Jesus was a spiritual Messiah not a Karl Marx savior of the ” proletariat.” That is precisely why Jesus and the Marxists part ways: they negate the spiritual and focus entirely upon the material. Marxists despised religion as ” the opiate of the people.” Jesus even said, ” Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s.” Jesus was no political Radical. That‘s Satan’s role for the Rules for Radical Lefties. Big difference.

His response, “render unto ceasar that which is caesars and render unto God that which is Gods.” Translation- Pay your taxes and pay your tithe.

The irony and hypocrisy of the left just gets thicker and thicker. Now they‘re using the philosophies of a man that most of them don’t even believe in. They want to use the God card on the issue of taxes…but not same-sex relationships, abortion, free will, promiscuity, etc. Go figure…hmmmmm.

RE:”As near as we can tell, Jesus would advocate a tax rate somewhere between 50% (in the vein of “If you have two coats, give one to the man who has none”) and 100% (if you want to get into heaven, be poor).” Why is it that Liberals ALWAYS pervert the word of God for political gain? Oh yeah that’s right , because their spiritual father, satan does the same thing.

Charity is what Jesus spoke of, Charity is an act of volition under autonomous control, forcefully taking someones money is subjugation NOT charity.

Liberals are so functionally sub literate on anything of any importance

Erika is just a propagandist for the Marxist in chief and these shills will be coming out of the woodwork like maggots from now until November.Sister Simone Campbell, executive director of Network, a Catholic social-justice lobby, has called Ryan’s budget proposal “unpatriotic” and “immoral.” The sister believes in ‘social justice’ that‘s a nonstarter right there because that’s the same BS Barry‘s been pushing on us for almost four years and we’re putting an end to it real soon.

Sister you don‘t know what you’re talking about so STFU.

Jesus never said anything about giving anything to the government, except “render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s.”

This blithering idiot at Time doesn’t know her Bible. Jesus told the rich man to voluntarily GIVE all he had to the poor, he wasn’t advocating government taxation of 100%. Jesus knew that government couldn’t be trusted to handle that much money without it causing corruption, vice and vote buying – - – Sounds like Washington D.C. today!

I suggest that the Time author Erika Christakis pack up her bags and move to France, where she could be taxed 75% of her income. I bet she would feel good about giving the government that much.

And where did Erika get her theology training I wonder? It’s amazing that all the progresso-commies who have likely not ever been inside a church in their lives or attended something like Jerry Wright’s “church”, are such experts on the Bible and theology.

Jesus taught generocity, charity and equality with love for all; NOT taxes other than this saying of his when challenged by the Pharissees on taxes, of which in jewish law the priests were excluded:

“Give unto Caesers what is Caesers; and give unto God what is Gods.”

Enough of this nonsense about Jesus preaching of socialism and social justice; he did not and may God show you the truth before the day of judgement comes when all shall answer for their deeds.

Jesus advocated paying Caesar what was due Caesar. He was much more concerned with the coming Kingdom of God.

If the people of a society are so brain dead as to vote in defilers and evil men who will tax them at 100% then they not only deserve it, the Bible advocates giving them their due. In the same respect if a people of a nation are so cowardly as to not resist the tyrant then they deserve his wrath.

On the money, in the case of the rich man who asked what he needed to do to get into heaven; the response given for him to sell all and give it unto the poor was for him to learn the lesson of charity and compassion for others. That man had the love of money in his heart, and not learned the love for others; and he went away saddened at the words of Jesus.

If taken at face value of the TIME author and the way he equates ‘riches’ with not making it into heaven, then everyone, from the wealthiest on down must be absolutely broke; no assets, no money, no cloths, no food or anything of the least value – would he do all of that? What of Obama?

Just another liberal who wants a religious theocracy…

There always seems to be two main types of liberals… Those who support religious theocracy (but usually it seems to be under a marxist social justice doctrine, or under Sharia… or both).

On the other end the athiests/secular humanists or communo-athiests who want eliminate all religion both public and ultimately private… Just as Marx and Lenin ultimated wanted.

“…it is political emancipation itself, the political method of emancipating oneself from religion. Of course, in periods when the political state as such is born violently out of civil society, when political liberation is the form in which men strive to achieve their liberation, the state can and must go as far as the abolition of religion, the destruction of religion. But it can do so only in the same way that it proceeds to the abolition of private property, to the maximum, to confiscation, to progressive taxation, just as it goes as far as the abolition of life, the guillotine.”
Karl Mark, On the Jewish Question, 1843.
